In this video, host Angela Brown talks with professional organizer Nicole Gabai about her concept of "Back to One" for keeping a tidy home. Back to One refers to the practice of resetting each room in your house to its ideal organized state at the end of every day. The goal is that by dedicating just 15 minutes per room per day to tidy and declutter, you can maintain an orderly living space with minimal effort. Back to One works by establishing what your ideal vision is for each room when it's clean and clutter-free. This looks different for every home and family. For a kid's bedroom, it may mean toys put away, bed made, and surfaces cleared. For a home office, it could be a cleared desk, files sorted, and wastebasket emptied. Nicole Gabai emphasizes that Back to One is unique for each space. Embark on a journey to transform your home by implementing daily Back-to-One tasks, so you can enjoy an organized space without too much effort. So if I'm feeling this way, anxious, angry, sad, whichever, I look at my thoughts. Like, what am I thinking about? What's making my feelings this? And then I realize I am in charge. I can change the thought. And then I change my feeling. And that changes the emotion around it. So that is all from meditation that I've learned this. Thoughts on Breathing I've always known that breathing is important, but I had a brain tumor six years ago, and I needed to go in for surgery, and it just shattered my world. It was incredibly scary. And I had a friend who was studying mindfulness, and she said she'd come over three times a week for a couple of months before the surgery, and she was going to help me with breathing. And I was like, how are we going to do that many hours about breathing? Like you go in, you go out. And she said no, you're going to see. So she taught me a lot about breathing. And one of the exercises is called Sweet 16. I use it whenever I'm getting anxious, I just take that pause. So basically it's. You take a deep breath in and a deep breath out, and then you hold your breath for four seconds, or the count of four beats. Then you inhale for four beats, hold it for four beats, and then you let the air out for four beats, and hold it for four. So you hold for four, inhale for four, hold it for four, exhale for four. And you start again. And that was incredibly important. Even though I'm an artist, I do enjoy structure. So the breathing is what gives me the focus when I'm meditating so that when I do have a fleeting thought, I can be like, Oh, look, there was a thought, or if I have a feeling that comes up, Oh, look at that feeling; okay, let's keep breathing. And in the beginning it was painful because I took it personally and thought, Oh my gosh, what is wrong with me? And it definitely has shifted for me with my meditations because I'm learning in meditation that my thoughts do not define me. My feelings do not define me. Those are all passing things. And my being stays intact no matter what. And that's where the non-judgment comes in. That's where the self-acceptance comes in. And then the bullying doesn't hurt so much anymore. It's not pleasant. But you know what? I have a distance from it now. I can put distance between myself and that person. And what I've learned is, The bullying that's happening is really about that person. It's how they feel about themselves. It's how they talk to themselves. That's really what it is. It's not about me. And that is through meditation. I've been able to learn that with experiencing when I'm in meditation, now I can bring it to my life and say, wow, that person really has a hard time because look at what they're saying and doing. When I was a little girl I was terrified of dogs. That never went away as an adult, so imagine my surprise when I suddenly found myself owning a golden doodle puppy in March of 2020 - and loving it! What seemed like the most unlikely situation taught me that we never really know what our potential is. It may feel impossible to ever achieve an organized life, but the good news is if you are here at the podcast, you have the power to do it. You wouldn't be interested in getting organized if you didn't have the ability somewhere within you. James Allen said “Dreams are the seedlings of potential” - and just like any seed, if we give our deepest desires some quality attention, it's exciting to think about what we can grow into. After all, I now love my little Oakley like I love my kids. If that could happen, anything is possible - even an organized life! An organized life is a very individual pursuit, and in this episode I ask you to consider what an organized life might look like for you. What will it mean for your relationships, your finances, your health, how you run your home, how you spend your time, and what brings you purpose and fulfillment. As you pay attention to what comes to mind, take note. These are hints of the organized life you can create. It's a joy to watch my clients transform their lives as they diligently chip away at the clutter - and implement tools that enhance their lives from every angle. In this episode I encourage you to “plant” the seed of something you are interested in on your calendar, and nurture the seed with action, so you, too, can live the kind of organized life you have the potential to create. ----more---- “Are things starting to click for you? Getting on my soap box here to tell you what I don't want you doing! I want you to stop being hard on yourself. No more negative self talk. Don't fall into the trap of feeling guilty and ashamed of how and where you are not measuring up. YOU get to decide what your priorities are and what you will or will not prioritize. And I know, this is not necessarily easy to do, but it can be VERY empowering. Take today and the next day and the day after that to focus on what you want to do and what's most important to you (and then let the other stuff go!). This could be stuff stuff or actual commitments or just things you feel obligated to do, but don't really need to be doing. Take back your time and your health and your well being by being razor focused about what you will and will not do. And of course, feel free to delegate, outsource, say no - you get the idea! In this episode, I share what it means to embrace an organized life. Organization, practically and in mindset, was my method to stay sane during the pandemic. Between work, home, and family, I had a lot of things going on. There were many moving parts.Organization is more than tidy spaces. It starts within. What you experience internally shows up in your actions at home, at work, and with friends and family. My experience has shown me that internal work leads to long-lasting change. This brings me to my belief that you're more organized than you think. You might be shaking your head, thinking, "Not me." But even if you can't see it, I DO. You are more organized than you think. However, negative self-thoughts can get in the way of seeing what is right in front of you. Remember, being organized or disorganized is a made-up concept! Seriously, you get to decide what 'organized' means in your life. I will guide you through the five fundamental principles behind Embracing an Organized Life. The first is giving yourself permission to want change. My mission is to help you realize what is (or isn't) working in your life and embrace successes so that you can achieve future goals with grace and self-appreciation. Hi Friends, This episode was originally scheduled to release last week, as a follow up to our Enneagram and Clutter series (side note: If you haven't had a chance to listen, I highly recommend you do!) Over the past 9 weeks I had the opportunity to sit down with some incredible guests, each one representing a different type on the Enneagram (a personality typology that looks at motivation rather than behavior). In other words, “the why you do what you do.” During the first half of our show I talked about: Similarities & differences with how each type deals with clutter Thinking, Feeling & Doing and the value in recognizing which center you default to. The importance of having language to communicate how clutter and organization affect your life In the second half of the show, we get tactical about what I call the 5 C's to Getting Organized. 5 simple steps to help you navigate a project from start to finish.
