Patreon.com/RememberTheGame And you can check out Captain N's Retrotopia Podcast here: https://retrotopiapodcast.podbean.com/ The most fiercely contested Patreon Poll of the year is always our December RPG poll, and Wild Arms conquered it a couple months ago. I sunk about 30 hours into this one to get ready for this episode, and it was time well spent. This is the best RPG I've played in ages. It has an interesting enough story, a small party size (which I love), a banging soundtrack, and when you're not in combat, you can taste a little Link to the Past in the overworked while you use bombs, dashing, and hockshops to solve some pretty deep puzzles. I think Wild Arms gets a little overlooked because it's on the console Final Fantasy VII built, and it really deserves to have more respect put on it. This is a great game. I crossed the retro podcast streams again this week and asked Captain N of the Retrotopia podcast to join me, and we both agreed that aside from a couple minor issues, this is one of the best RPGs in the PlayStation library. And that says something because that was the Attitude Era of role-playing games. We're gonna spoil some plot points and puzzle solutions, but it'll be worth it. And before we break out our teardrops, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what would have happened if Nintendo hadn't launched the NES back in the 80's? What podcasts do I listen to while gaming? And are Shay and I gonna play Split Fiction?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 more 'under the radar' PSOne RPGs: Legend of Legaia, Chrono Cross, and Brave Fencer Musashi. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
What's up, dudes? CM Chuck from Just Another Friday Night and Jeff Loftin from Lost Christmas join me to talk about '80s action cartoons we wish had Christmas episodes! From Transformers to GoBots, from Voltron to M.A.S.K., these cartoons delivered action and adventure to the max! Unfortunately, they also left out the holiday cheer. Many of these cartoons were epic, leaving us wondering why they didn't include a Christmas themed episode. In fact, a few even had comic Christmas issues in the UK. We get into and pitch ideas for Transformers, Thundercats, M.A.S.K., COPS, TMNT, Voltron, Dungeons & Dragons, SilverHawks, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, GoBots, Captain N, Visionaries, Thundarr, Inhumanoids, and Dino • Riders! And that's just to start with! There will definitely be future episodes on this topic.Ice and snow episodes? Check. Other holiday themed episodes? Got 'em. '80s Christmas action? Nope. Not even a little. So grab your blaster, hop in your transforming vehicle, and fight along to this episode on '80s action cartoons we wish had Christmas episodes! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame And you can check out Captain N's Retrotopia Podcast here: https://retrotopiapodcast.podbean.com/ People have been bugging me to review Rocket Knight Adventures for years, and now that I finally have, I get why. This is one of the finest 16-bit platforms I've ever played. One of those Genesis games that makes me jealous as a Super Nintendo kid. You control a possum in a suit of armour with a sword and a rocket pack, and you fight pigs as you travel from a village to outer space. I...well...it makes sense when you play it. Kinda. The controls are crisp and the rocket pack mechanic really takes the gameplay to the next level. Great variety between stages, an awesome soundtrack, sharp graphics, and it's the way all retro games should be: tough as fuck. I love this game. I crossed the retro podcast streams this week and asked Captain N of the Retrotopia podcast to join me, and we spent nearly an hour singing the praises of this possum and his adventures. I can say this game is a lock for my top 10 Genesis games now, and it's knocking on the door of the very exclusive top 5 club... And before we rocket away, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what my favourite part of RTG is? Are there too many rouge-like card combat games these days? And if I could host one major TV gameshow, which would it be? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Before launching the Valiant Universe with the likes of Turok Dinosaur Hunter, Magnus Robot Fighter, Harbinger, and more, Jim Shooter's Valiant Comics published a handful of Nintendo-licensed comics in 1990-91 based on Mario, Zelda, Game Boy, and Captain N. Is there enough discussion-worthy content within those issues to justify/fill an 82-minute episode? Nope! -- but 1990s game nostalgia / game-adaptation discussions abound! This episode exists to celebrate one of Justin's other podcasts -- the BAY STREET VIDEO PODCAST -- hitting 200 episodes, and devoting an hours-long special subscriber episode to reviewing the new mega boxset of the 1993 Super Mario Bros movie just released from Umbrella Entertainment! OBJECTION!!! Yes, we had a lot of objections last week so I decided let's go to court. I have a lot of experience working in court but I was not ready for this adventure into the legal system. These two, who grew up on opposite sides of the Sega/Nintendo divide, embark on a thrilling journey through the gaming landscape. Together, they challenge each other to revisit and play the gems they missed in the gaming golden days. The SNES RPG library is the stuff of legend, so it's easy for the lesser known games to slip through the cracks. Lufia II is one of those titles, and I'm here to tell you it's a game worth exploring said crack for. I'd never played, or heard of it, before this episode, but it's like a standard Final Fantasy RPG meets The Legend of Zelda. You fight battles in classic turn-based RPG combat, but outside of that you solve puzzles and blow up walls like you would in A Link to the Past. I don't love RPGs, but this one hooked me. I have two guests this week. Long-time hot dog, Jnasty, sponsored this episode and got me playing Lufia II in the first place, so he swings by to explain why he's so hot for Sinistrals. And then our power hungry Discord mod, Captain N, gives me a shout to take a deep dive into feeding monsters shields whilee navigating the glitchiest dungeon to ever glitch (it'll all make sense after you listen). And before we save the world, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone calls for an end to micro-transactions. Will I ever review Cyberpunk 2077? And is Mario 64 a horror game??? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! It is here. After 2.5 years, Dexter Morrill and I have finally watched and discussed EVERY episode of Captain N The Game Master (minus the clip show episode at the end of season 2...) This has been a long time coming. Dexter and I started this series as a way to help me keep the podcast weekly after my kid was born and it grew into something we could not have expected. This series was an absolute joy. So much so that recording week became known as Captain N week. This would entail watching the same episode multiple times, a few of which were with my daughter and then laughing about it for over an hour with my friend, the co-host with the mo-host, Dexter. And of course with all this Captain N being watched, my kid loves the show now. Go figure. I of course need to send a sincere thank you to all of you for listening and following along with this series. It has meant the world to Dex and I and we could not be happier with how it turned out. The sweaty, sweary and chaotic mess is now available for the first time in public: Whilst Luke is away, Ash will play... Nintendo! Except not Nintendo, because that would be product placement and that's a big no-no now. So whilst covering this piece of entertainment that is absolutely not trying to sell ANYTHING... who will be his Player 2? Who or what will the ULTIMATE warp zone gift him for company? Does it suck today? Eh, maybe a little. But for so many of us, Captain Lou Albano will always be our Mario. I was always crushed when I'd turn it on and find stupid Link and his stupid "Excuuuuuse me, Princess" face. Fortunately, most days it was Mario and Luigi hanging out in their basement apartment/shop in front of a studio audience with celebrities, and that was followed by the sweetest cartoon ever drawn. The animation sucked, but whatever. My buddy Bradley McCue swings by the show this week, and despite the fact that we grew up watching this show in two totally different eras, we had a blast looking back on a massive part of our childhoods. Hey Pisanos! It's the Super Mario Bros. Super Show! And before we go plumbing, I deliver another edition of the Infamous Intro! Video game history has had a special place in my heart for quite some time. I've done a full episode on the topic with my Captain N co-host Dexter, I include history about all the games I cover in each episode and I interview people who write books on game history. It's a topic that I'm very passionate about. Joining me today on the show is Stephen Frost, who is the head of production at the game developer Digital Eclipse. Digital Eclipse is the studio responsible for the Atari 50 collection and more recently, The Making of Karateka and the Wizardry remake. This company is doing some of the most important work for game preservation and making it accessible to consumers and so I HAD to get someone from the company on the show to talk about it. Stephen was a wonderful guest and we have a great conversation about Digital Eclipse's work, his opinions on the game industry and so much more. Patreon.com/RememberTheGame I'm a lifelong Mega Man fan, but I've only ever played the main series and the first 3 X games. I've always wanted to try some of the other iterations of the Blue Bomber, and finally fired one up for this week's episode. And while it controls like garage, Mega Man Legends is charming as all hell. I was worried about Mega Man's transition over to 3D, but I actually ended up enjoying this game quite a bit. I missed my robot masters weapons, stage select, weapon weaknesses and all the MM standards, but the voice acting, music, charming locations and cool story kinda made up for it. Those fucking controls, though... Captain N sponsored this episode about a year ago, and being the slow-ass that I am, I'm finally catching up. He swings by the show to explain why he likes Legends so much, and then I break down what I like, dislike, and fucking hate, about this weird little Mega Man game. And before we get legendary, I deliver another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if they're part of the problem after paying a pretty penny for an old, rare game. It's hard to believe but we have reached the finale of season 2 of the Captain N series. There is only one season (more like half a season) left of the show. Dexter Morrill and I break down episode 13 of season 2, Germ Wars. What is a video virus? Why does Kid Icarus have an arrow for everything and yet nothing? This month's Captain N is by far one of the STRANGEST episodes of the show so far (and that's saying something...). Dexter and I are joined by our good friend Gabe Swarr. Gabe specifically requested to join us for this episode and I am SO glad he did. This episode may be listed as mini in the title but it is ANYTHING but mini. Join us in this wild journey as we learn about the Captain N treatment of Paperboy. Jala-Chan returns! I'm joined by Dexter and Jala to discuss episode 12 of season 2 for Captain N the Game Master, I Wish I Was a Wombatman. What started as a bizarre 1-off character in season 1 episode 3 has turned into its own full-length episode. We break down all the zaniness of this episode and talk a disturbingly long time about wombat nipples. Patreon.com/RememberTheGame Back in November, I held my annual 24 hour stream to raise money for the Stollery Children's Hospital here in Edmonton. And four generous mo-fos each donated $1,000 for the opportunity to come on the show and talk games with me. This is the first of those four mo-fos. Captain N has selected Dark Cloud for the PS2. I know some of you love this game, so be warned: I do not. I think the city-building and randomly generated dungeons are rad, but the tedious combat, breakable weapons and stupid fucking thirst meter kept me from really falling in love. Some of you love it. Some of you hate it. Either way, we're gonna lift this dark cloud by talking about Dark Cloud on the show this week! And before we break our weapons and yell at Toro, I stumble through another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, we discusss whether or not games from today will hold their value like retro games do. Is Tears of the Kingdom a good "jump-in" point for a new Zelda fan? And what game have me and the hot dogs disagreed on the most? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! KAKAROT!!! That's right, this week on the show I got to chat with the original voice of Goku from Dragonball Z, Ian James Corlett. Captain N has some wild moments in it and in this month's episode it is no different. Dexter and I our joined by Jala-Chan of Jala-Chan's Place to break down season 2 episode 10 of Captain N the Game Master, The Trojan Dragon. What is this!? I'm actually covering something new and contemporary on the show? On this week's episode I'm joined by my Captain N co-host with the mo-host, Dexter Morrill, to discuss the newly released Super Mario Bros. Movie. We keep the conversation spoiler free for about the first hour of the episode and after that we dive into more specifics. What did we think? How did Mario translate to the big screen!? To tie into the recent Super Mario movie release, we decided to cover the early 90s Super Mario World cartoon. The Mario segment is a little boring, even though we have some fun discussing the the weird diversions the creators decided to take from the standard games. The real gem here, though, is the Captain N: The Game Master segment that comes in the second half of the episode. It's a wild 11 minutes, with a surprising guest star, an evil robot AND an evil clock, an Urkel ripoff, and a princess who just wants her dad to come back. It's something. If you like the show, give us a rating on Apple Podcasts. And follow us on Twitter at @weirdcenter or Instagram at @weirdnesspodcast (where you can suggest TV shows we should cover on the podcast)!
I'm not gonna beat around the bush. The episode that is covered for this month's Captain N episode is by far our favorite of season 2. Dexter Morrill is back and we have a ton of fun breaking down Captain N season 2 episode 9, Having a Ball. This episode is one of the most wild episode's we've ever seen on the show. Do you wanna see King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard as rockstars? Victorian era aristocrats? Tomatoes dancing with creepy legs? If you answered yes to any of these, this episode is for you. Another month another Captain N episode. Dexter and I break down season 2 episode 8, The Feud of Faxanadu. In this month's episode we find the N Team at odds with each other for.... reasons? They end up assisting a nation of dwarves and elves who are at war with each other but are secretely being manipulated by the evil one. Will the N Team reconcile their differences in time to save everyone? Who cares! This episode was silly and we loved it. It's time for some more Captain N! Dexter Morrill is back and he joins me to discuss Captain N's journey through time with Link and Pero (aka Puss n Boots). Does that make any sense? No! It's more Captain N and this month's episode is a look into season 2 episode 6, "The Lost City of Kongoland." Dexter Morrill and I discuss probably one of the stranger episodes of the show, and that's saying something considering what we've watched so far. Princes Lana turns evil!? Donkey Kong wears a tie!? I can't definitively say what game we get the most requests to cover on the show, but I know Grand Theft Auto IV is near the top of the list. And after spending a massive chunk of the past couple weeks playing it, it's time to go bowling (if you know, you know). I've never been the biggest fan of the GTA series. I think they're fun to fuck around in, but the only one I played around the time of it's release was Vice City, which I didn't love. I finally played San Andreas a couple years ago and adored it, and I've been jonesing to play IV and V ever since. Longtime supporter of the show, Mr. Doug Dorn, sponsored this episode, finally giving me the kick in the ass I needed to get around to playing GTA IV, and I'm so damned glad he did. This game is now easily my favourite Grand Theft Auto (until I play V, apparently), and it was great chatting with Doug and finding out why this game means so much to him. And after that, my buddy (and the Roman to my Niko) Andre, comes by the show and we get into the seedy underbelly of Liberty City, and talk about what makes this game so damned good. And before we go bowling, I toss together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, we talk about old gaming cartoon like Captain N and The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. Why the hell does Super Mario World end at 96 exits and not 100?? And what's the deal with the constant short stock on Nintendo's N64 Switch controller?? Plus we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 grand Grand Theft Autos: Vice City, San Andreas, and Liberty City Stories. Are you on social media?
