On Monday May 11, several hundred people attended Beyond Plastic's lobby day and rally. The Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act – known as PRRIA - would require producers of single use packaging to reduce the amount by 30% over 12 years and ban 13 toxic chemicals from packaging. The bill has twice passed the Senate but the Assembly Speaker has refused to let it come up for a vote despite having a majority of members as co-sponsors. However, a few days after the rally, the Speaker announced that the Democrat members of the Assembly would be reviewing the legislation in conference. The sponsors recently did an additional 38 amendments to the bill to help with its passage. In part two of our coverage, we hear Dr. Charles Moon of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Chris Alexander of the NYS NAACP Conference, Assemblymember Deborah Glick, and Jay Buckiewicz of the Peekskill NAACP. This has been Mark Dunlea for the Hudson Mohawk Magazine.
Paul and Chris return to the pod to bring their expertise on classic Hollywood. In 1934, Will Hays, then the president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, began strenuously enforcing the Production Code. This code was a guideline used to determine what films could depict on screen and the behavior of characters. These included drug use, promiscuity, and yes, homosexuality. Despite limiting these things, it inspired creative filmmakers to work around the code and find new and clever ways to challenge it. The films we chose, She Done Him Wrong and Baby Face were each released in 1933, and a case could be made that they led to stricter enforcement of the code. Baby Face stars Barbara Stanwyck as Lily, a woman who escapes her evil father and makes her way in the city, quite literally sleeping her way to the top of high society. She Done Him Wrong is based on Mae West's own play, and she plays a nightclub owner who must contend with a jealous ex who escapes from prison, and a young Cary Grant, a police captain. ART! TRASH! TERROR! Adventures in Strange Cinema (Headpress 2025) by Chris Alexander is a treasure trove of in-depth essays and edifying interviews that celebrate some of the most eccentric and unforgettable movies in cult cinema history. From recognized classics (George A. Romero's Dawn Of The Dead, David Lynch's The Elephant Man) to misunderstood masterpieces (Michael Mann's The Keep, Boris Sagal's The Omega Man) to unfairly maligned curios (Kostas Karagiannis' Land Of The Minotaur, Brett Leonard's Hideaway), the author takes an alternately serious and playful but always personal look at several strains of international horror, dark fantasy, and exploitation film -- motion pictures that transform, transgress, challenge, infuriate, shock, and entertain. Connecting these passionate and critical essays are insightful interviews with revered talents, such as John Waters (writer/director, Cecil B. Demented), Michael Winner (director, The Sentinel), Nicolas Cage (actor, Vampire's Kiss), Gene Simmons (co-founder/bassist, KISS), William Crain (director, Blacula), William Lustig (director, Maniac), Werner Herzog (director, Nosferatu: Phantom Der Nacht) and many more, as well as witty, heartfelt memoirs charting the author's oddball experiences on the fringes of Hollywood and beyond. This afternoon, Joe and David began a conversation about lawmakers planning for a possible mass casualty event before the election. This plan is being advocated by four House members and involves a constitutional amendment that would allow for the quick replacement of Congress members in the event of a casualty attack. Later, the pair moved on to discuss the public's response to this mass casualty event plan, pointing out how it seems orchestrated. After a short break, Joe and David were joined by guest Christopher Alexander from LACAG. The three discussed election integrity efforts in Louisiana, efforts to give the people a seat at the table, lobbyists, and much more. Following Chris's departure, Joe and David discussed Biden's latest speech to the UN, the conflict in the Middle East, and more, before closing in prayer.

In 1978, horror legend George A. Romero created one of the most iconic films in the horror genre and a classic that defied genres altogether. His follow up to his mighty 1968 masterpiece “Night of the Living Dead”. The film, about a small band of survivors who take shelter in a shopping mall, while the outside world falls apart at the clawing hands of the living dead, was not only an audience and critical hit, it redefined the genre and its influence cannot be underestimated. In this special episode of Spill your guts, we celebrate the 45th anniversary of George A. Romero's seminal masterpiece, “Dawn of the Dead”.Joining me to discuss the film is horror maestro and long time friend of Spill your guts, Chris Alexander. Chris is the former editor of Fangoria magazine, an author, filmmaker and all around genre spokesman. He's also the perfect person for me to talk with about the film. Both Chris and I were fortunate enough to have a friendship with George and we both had our own unique conversations with him about “Dawn” and his relationship to the film.We discuss the films inception, the happy accidents that lead to some of the films most iconic moments, the challenges George faced with the production itself, the films incredibly multifaceted and damn near perfect script and why George Romero himself had a somewhat complicated relationship with the film. This and much, much more. It's difficult when discussing a film like “Dawn” not to retread when a movie has been analyzed and discussed as much as this but by taking a more holistic view of the film and because of our own relationships with the films creator, I feel even the most devout “Dawn” fans will find some ideas and insights here worth chewing on.Okay folks, there's no more room in hell so let's get down to it and return to Monroeville Mall with Chris Alexander as we look back at George A. Romero's “Dawn of the Dead”! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
