A lot of you probably know today's guest as a top and highly sought after motivational speaker on leadership, finance and family.    Joining me on today's show is Chris Hogan. Chris gives us a backstory of where his passion to help people comes from, and how he's overcome obstacles in his life to be the inspirational figure he is today. Chris Hogan is a two-time #1 national best-selling author, financial expert and host of The Chris Hogan Show. For more than a decade, Hogan has served at Ramsey Solutions, equipping and challenging people to take control of their money and reach their financial goals.    His second book, Everyday Millionaires: How Ordinary People Built Extraordinary Wealth—And How You Can Too, is based on the largest study of millionaires ever conducted   Growing up with a single mom Despite his dad not being around, Chris grew up with a lot of family members and mentors, all of whom believed in his abilities. From his upbringing and environment, Chris was able to pick up on what inspired him and mould a character from it.   Growth and Mindset Growing to be a better person comes down to one thing. Your heart. You'll never grow because someone has asked or told you to. You'll never grow because of something you've seen.  You'll only grow once you decide to look into your heart and make the decision to change for better.  Thus, growth is an internal decision. And the beauty of it, is that it's not a one time decision. It's an everyday decision that we have to make. A decision about how we feel about ourselves and how we view others.  And although there's nothing wrong with glancing back every once in a while to see how far we've come, it's important to always focus on the future. We've got more ahead of us than that's ever been behind us.  Remember to also spend time around supportive people who believe in you and encourage you to reach for your success. Isolating will only lead to a downward spiral of constant backsliding.    Servant Leadership The corporate mainstream has a culture of people at the bottom doing things in order to accomplish what people the top need accomplished.  Servant leadership flips this triangle around. The focus shifts to the people at the bottom. The top level individuals focus on how and what to do to make life easier and better for the ones at the bottom. This kind of mentality, according to Chris, causes leaders to step outside of their title and start looking at people for what they truly are, and that's people. Ultimately, it's less about what you do and more about what you do to benefit others. You're looking for ways to serve and encourage other people through their life journeys.   The power of your inner circle. You think and become like the people you spend your time with. And this is something you should be mindful about. It's common to have friends who are negative or make you feel uncomfortable, and the key here is to make a choice of not letting them influence you. It's all about constantly being proactive in deciding what you want to focus on. Take in the good stuff and filter the bad out.   How Chris conquered his biggest adversity Chris' youngest son was at 2 years, diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder. It was gut wrenching for Chris. No matter how much he tried to be positive, it was extremely difficult and painful for Chris to walk through and acknowledge this reality.  One of Chris' biggest regrets in life is how he chose to handle that problem. For the first 1 and a half years, Chris chose to isolate to himself and his problems. Eventually though, Chris made the decision to understand and learn about the disease his son had, and with the knowledge, cam awareness. It's through awareness that we can make life changing decisions from our hearts. In conclusion, it's important to acknowledge that none of us is perfect. But we are indeed perfectly capable of making improvements.  The most important thing in the self-development process is to identify the areas that you need improvement and begin taking action towards it.  Be willing to forgive yourself for the sake of growth and seek constant guidance from experts in the areas you need improvement. And last but not least, remember to keep a close company to friends and family who support and believe in you.   Connect with Chris Hogan Website - https://www.chrishogan360.com/  Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/chrishogan360 Twitter - https://twitter.com/chrishogan360 Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/chrishogan360/ YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/ChrisHogan360   Connect with Doug Instagram: @dougbopst Facebook: Doug Bopst Website: www.dougbopst.com/gift   More on Earth Echo Foods/Cacao Bliss: www.earthechofoods.com/dougbopst Use Promo code "Doug" at checkout to receive 15% off your order

(3:20) Why Chris feels it’s so important to help as many people as he can. Unlike many “big name” influencers, he gives credit where credit is due and leads with one of my favorite attributes. In his opinion, any successful person who ignores this attribute is totally delusional. (4:20) The one thing many people consider a weakness that could be the most important element in your personal development if you’ll let it. It gives you a foundation and frame of reference you can’t get in any other way. (6:01) What self-awareness, even if you’re incredibly successful, can do to keep you grounded and moving forward in the face of challenge. It’s the main reason I belong to a mastermind where I am the least successful member of the group. (7:05) How Chris went from humble circumstances growing up with a single mom in Kentucky, to where he is now. His new book teaches how the American Dream is not dead and how it’s alive to anyone who’s willing to grab onto it and do the work. (9:02) Chris’s definition of a “millionaire.” Hint: it’s not what you think. But, you can use Chris’s free tool on his website to see how close you are to being an every-day millionaire. (11:10) Why so many wealthy people have amazing stories of overcoming HUGE obstacles in their lives. And Chris doesn’t think it’s a coincidence. Rather, it’s a key variable in the success equation. (12:45) 4 things all people who conquer big challenges have in common. Why almost everyone who faces the same challenges without these 4 things almost always crack under the pressure. (16:05) The biggest myth Chris busts in his new book. It explains why most people are dead wrong about where the majority of American’s wealth comes from. (18:28) What Chris’s book will do for you that no other book can. One of the several unique tools he provides is a list of attributes the 10,000 millionaires he and his team studied have in common. Here’s the truth about money: The more you have, the more impact you can make. So why wouldn’t you want to make a million dollars in your business? Well, for many of you, it boils down to what you believe. So much of what I teach you is to believe. Believe in yourself, believe that you can do the thing, and believe that God put that dream in your heart for a reason. Remember when you were a kid and you believed? Maybe you believed in Santa, the tooth fairy, the Easter Bunny, even flying reindeer. You believed you could be anything you wanted to be. You believed anything was possible. Maybe you even believed you would be a millionaire when you grew up. But something has changed since then. Something happened as we grew up and became more reasonable and more logical—we stopped believing. At some point in your journey, whether you realized it or not, you stopped believing and you settled. You probably thought, Well, I’m not going to dream too big because I don’t want to end up disappointed. If you don’t believe something is possible, you’re never going to try. When you set goals for your business, you also create a plan to achieve them. It’s the same with being a millionaire. If you set a goal of becoming a millionaire, you have to create a plan to make it happen. It’s as easy as that. You have to be careful of the words you tell yourself. When you hear those negative thoughts in your head saying, I’m not enough, you just need to have a positive thought prepared to tell yourself, I am enough. I got this. Related: Ep. 58 — Perseverance in Your Business: How to Keep Going When You Want to Give Up Working Through All the Feelings About Wealth We all have perceptions of what we think it takes to be wealthy. We even have perceptions of what we think it means to be wealthy. Should I feel guilty for having money? No! Is it even okay to have wealth? Yes! Yes, it is okay to have wealth! Listen, when God blesses you with His resources, it is up to you to steward these resources well, and He will bless you with more. Imagine the impact you could make if you had an abundance of resources. The bottom line is that you need to be a good and faithful servant of God’s resources. Imagine being able to give like never before and change your family tree. Now that right there is what it’s all about. Building wealth in a smart way, slow and steady, for the right reasons is the way to go, and you can do this. Don’t get me wrong: It’s okay to enjoy nice things. There is nothing wrong with that. But the true joy in building your wealth comes from being able to give generously and leave a legacy for your family. Related: How to Set Prices How to Make a Million Dollars in Your Business with Chris Hogan Chris Hogan is the national best-selling author of Retire Inspired, host of The Chris Hogan Show, fellow team member here at Ramsey Solutions and last but not least, my good friend. So, before we get started, let me tell you a little about Chris. You know those people that walk in the room and just own it? The people that have everyone’s attention because you just feel their presence? That’s Chris Hogan. It’s more than his booming voice that commands attention. It’s his contagious passion to help people understand how to build wealth and live the life they’ve always wanted. To say he gets people fired up is a huge understatement. So, in this episode, Chris Hogan and I are going to get you to believe again. Because you may not realize it, but you already have exactly what you need to make a million dollars in your business. The Largest Study Ever Done on How to Make a Million Dollars Steve Jobs once said, “I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.”(1) But don’t just take Steve Jobs’ word for it—the research backs it up. In the largest study ever done on millionaires, Chris Hogan and his team found that 93% of millionaires say they got there from hard work. Millionaires have learned that hard work matters more than the size of your paycheck, where (or if!) you went to college and what kind of family you were born into. Y’all, this is exciting stuff. I can’t wait for you to hear exactly how to become a millionaire. You’re going to be blown away at just how attainable this really is! Remember, it doesn’t matter where you came from. It matters where you’re going. Regardless of the situation you were born into, regardless of the job you have, you can make the decision today to become a millionaire. Chris Hogan is going to give you so much great information in this episode, and you can find out even more in his brand-new book Everyday Millionaires: How Ordinary People Built Wealth—and How You Can Too. In this episode, Chris Hogan and I will discuss: Building wealth and why it’s important Why it isn’t selfish to put money aside for your future—it’s smart Why becoming a millionaire feels impossible, and why that’s a myth The real traits, qualities and job titles of everyday millionaires The #1 thing everyday millionaires did to accumulate wealth How you can make a million dollars with your business And y’all, as business owners, you’re already ahead of the curve on this. 96% of millionaires say they enjoyed what they did as their career. We are talking about making the most of the time you have and that your beginning is now! I have a conversation with  Chris Hogan. Many know Chris as one of the primary personalities with Dave Ramsey. Chris’s has a bestselling book and a popular podcast titled “Retire Inspired”, but, and this is not just to entice everyone to hear the show, but I have zero thoughts about retirement, I’m young! But Chris shared a message I needed to hear. He talks planning ahead and getting the most value out of our days, and you’ll hear a very acute and personal story involving one of his kids with a chronic issue that makes this topic very acute for Chris, his family, his life and his mission. There is a ton of passion in this discussion. It truly was powerful. You can follow Hogan on Twitter and Instagram at @ChrisHogan360 and online at chrishogan360.com or facebook.com/chrishogan360. "I don't want you to be a been brother: a would-a-been, could-a-been or should-a-been. Focus, be well-rounded and give your effort at all times." Chris Hogan received this advice from his Mom. He was bless to grow up with seven or eight parental figures - from uncles and grandparents to teachers and coaches - in a small town in Kentucky. These role models helped him to dream big and never rest on his laurels. Today, Chris is a husband, father, bestselling author, radio and podcast host, expert on retirement and personal finance and part of the Dave Ramsey speaker team. Today, Chris shares simple, life-changing financial tips and nuggets of wisdom gleaned from mentors throughout his life. SHOW NOTES:  Information that gets applied in your life time and again becomes wisdom. Above all else I realize my time spent with my boys is to help them become productive young men in society. Time spent talking about what and how they are thinking so I can share my experiences and they can see that Dad is not perfect, but perfectly capable of improving. Dreaming big is necessary but the work you have to put in if you're serious will lead you closer (or on the doorstep) of that opportunity. Be open to opportunities. What seems like a detour is actually the new bigger journey connecting you to the end goal. Grab the opportunity and avoid the chances. Chances are 50/50. When pursued, an opportunity will lead you somewhere better. - Chris's Grandma Failure is when you don't accomplish a goal and you stop. Not succeeding is when you gave 100% but didn't reach the goal. With maturity and wisdom you realize in pursuit of it, you improved, moved down the path. Understanding my example speaks louder than my words makes me stay very aware. Chris moved from banking to consumer finance when he realized: "Those account numbers had names; those names had faces; the faces had families." It's hard to tell how people are doing with money. They can be dressed head to toe in Prada but not have two nickels to rub together. If you are 17 or 77: We all need money to provide for our family. If you don't have a plan for your money, someone else will. It's 80% effort and 20% knowledge. It's a matter of learning these 3 basic skills: Understand and tap into what it is you would ultimately like to accomplish. What are your high definition dreams: Write a check to your college? Build a park? Support your grandparents. Triple A: Assess. Acknowledge. Activate. Assess current financial situation. What's working? What isn't? Acknowledge that it can be better! Activate. How can we do this? Do it. Get out of debt and you give yourself a raise. Debt is a thief. When you get a credit card, interest is a penalty. When you save or invest - the interest you earn is a reward or bonus. You don't have to ask for a raise or work harder, just focus on getting out of debt. Budgeting is crucial. Tell your money where to go, don't wonder where its been spent. Don't make excuses, make progress. Regardless of where you are, one step forward is called progress. Learn more at ChrisHogan360.com CHRIS HOGAN'S LIVE INSPIRED 7  1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peel. I got this from my coach sophomore year of college. He said read it and apply it. 2. Tomorrow you discover your wealthy uncle shockingly dies at the age of 103; leaving you millions. What would you do? I'd find a way to give a large majority away to create and pass on his legacy. It doesn't change what I do day to day. I'd understand it was a blessing and I'd never want to waste it. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? The quilt my grandma made me and my grandpa's cane. They are reminders to me that where I come from is not an accident and where I am going is not an accident either. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Dr. Martin Luther King. I'd want to find out what in this man caused him to go against the norm and stay so focused despite such persecution and learn about his heart and mission. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? My defensive coordinating coach Ernie horning - "Don't make excuses make plays." 6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? Slow down! I was in such a rush to arrive that I may have overlooked the process and relationships. Slow down, there is wisdom in waiting. Because if you 're not prepared to get to the next step, you won't maximize the opportunity you'll squander it. Practical way to catch our breath and slow down: Kids and friends ultimately will remember how you made them feel. Even in the midst of being busy, be intentional. Carve out the time to sit down and carve out your sons and daughters. So often we think people want something from us. Let's be the people that give something. Let's give.  7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Grab opportunity. Maximize opportunities and share opportunities.  *** Live Inspired – IN STUDIO: For the first time ever, John is launching IN STUDIO – a LIVE, virtual monthly experience. Retirement Answer Man
#91 - Chris Hogan Wants You to Know This About Retirement

Retirement Answer Man

Hey friends, Roger here, and I want thank you - truly THANK YOU - for being a part of the Retirement Answer Man community. My greatest hope is that the information I share on this podcast enables you to retire happily and wisely so you can make the most of your future. I kind of consider this episode to be a “star studded” episode because I’m featuring two powerful guests who you should get to know if you don’t know them. First, in the “hot topic” segment I have a great conversation with Joe of “Stacking Benjamins” who has some important updates about changes in federal laws regarding social security benefits and then, in the main topic segment I chat with Chris Hogan of the Dave Ramsey group about his upcoming book, “Retire Inspired.” You’re going to hear some great information on this episode, so stick around.   Many people have taken advantage of a Social Security loophole… but it’s soon going away!   The recently passed Budget Reconciliation Act is like your typical legislation - there’s pages and pages of stuff that is irrelevant to the average citizen. But down deep in the verbiage is a section that addresses some loopholes in Social Security law that made it possible for retirees to get as much as $60,000 more from their SS retirement than if they didn’t use it… and that issue is changed in the legislation. It’s going to make a big impact on retirement planning from here on out so it would do you good to hear the details… and thankfully, I’ve got Joe from “Stacking Benjamins” with me to go over the specifics.   There is a difference between retiring and retiring inspired.   In my main segment today I’m thrilled to have Chris Hogan with me. Chris is one of the big shot guys at Dave Ramsey’s organization and he specializes in the area of retirement. He’s got a new book coming out in January 2016, “Retire Inspired.” He’s trying to make sense of the retirement scene with the same clarity and life inspiring challenge that is characteristic of the Ramsey group, so I’m eagerly awaiting his book’s debut. In this episode we cover some of the topics he addresses in his book and chat about why it’s important to aim for a specific number, not a specific  year for your retirement. What’s that all about? You’ll have to listen to get the specifics. One of the biggest tips for retiring inspired…   Don’t go it alone. There are probably hundreds of thousands of people who simply put their cash into a 401K or IRA and expect that they’ve done the best they can do toward their retirement. But the reality is that very few of us are a retirement expert so our efforts, however good or well intentioned they may be, are likely going to fall quite a bit short of what is possible. As a result we won’t maximize our retirement through better investments, better strategies, or better planning. It may sound like a simple thing (and it is on one level) but it’s one of those simple things in life that makes a huge difference. Chris Hogan spells out that issue for us on this episode of The Retirement Answer Man and gives practical tips on how you can take advantage of the expertise of others to help you retire inspired.   If you’ve not maximized your retirement planning and you’re getting up in years, it’s not too late.   In this conversation with Chris Hogan, of the Dave Ramsey group, I had a great time hearing his thoughts on the place many people find themselves: They’re past 55 or even 65 and haven’t done a very good job of planning for retirement. As a result it looks like they may not get to retire at all. Chris gives a very encouraging example of a woman he worked with who discovered (through his counsel) that she could put aside an extra $600 every month toward her retirement, which created a very positive snowball effect to build her retirement quickly and effectively. It’s just one example, and of course, every situation is different. But it serves to show that if you take a close look at your situation with the right kind of help, you can carve out small steps that make a difference and turn into big steps in time. Listen to this episode to hear more of Chris’ advice on this important topic.   OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE OF THE RETIREMENT ANSWER MAN   [0:27] Welcome to this star-studded episode of the RAM, featuring Joe (host of Stacking Benjamins) and Chris Hogan (of the Dave Ramsey Group).
