2-29-2024 Passed Ball Show. John talks about the standoff between MLB Owners and Scott Boras, the four remaining high profile Boras represented free agents, and whether this situation is more on the MLB Owners or on Boras and his corporation. If you listened to John's show before, you know who he is calling to task. John then opines on why it is good for the NBA to have star led teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors in its playoffs and also why it might be difficult for both to make the playoffs (past play-in tournament). During today's brief #savingsportshistory segment, John talks about Leap Day, the Cincinnati Royals, Oscar Robertson, Jerry Lucas, Gordie Howe, Ray Bourque, Al Rosen, Henry Richard, and Jerry Groom- then tells you who Dickey Pierce and Lena Blackburne are and why they have an impact on sports history.
It was 1959 and the Minneapolis Lakers were in Charleston, West Virginia to play against the Cincinnati Royals. As the Lakers were checking into their hotel, Elgin Baylor, Boo Ellis, and Ed Fleming were denied rooms because of the color of their skin. Baylor took it personally and chose to sit out the game.CREDITSRick Loayza: Head researcher, writer, and voiceJacob Loayza: Editor, producer, and publisher MUSIC"A Slow Day" by Chiro"Horizons" by Roa SPORTS HISTORY NETWORKsportshistorynetwork.comsportshistorynetwork.com/podcasts/basketball-history-101/ FACEBOOKm.facebook.com/Basketball-History-101-103801581493027/ BUSINESS CONTACTbballhistory101@gmail.com

Biden reiterated a statement from the FDIC and Treasury Department during public remarks Monday morning, telling reporters that the federal government would guarantee depositors at the banks access to their funds. He added that no such protection is being offered to the banks' investors, however. His administration has also fired the leadership at both banks. "No losses will be borne by the taxpayers," Biden emphasized. "Instead, the money will come from the fees that banks pay into the deposit insurance fund. Because of the actions that our regulators have already taken, every American should feel confident that their deposits will be there if and when they need them." Biden went on to call on Congress to pass legislation to "strengthen rules" on banks to prevent failures like SVB and Signature. The Santa Clara, California-based band collapsed last week and is now under the control of federal regulators. The SVB had been the 16th-largest bank in the U.S. prior to the bank run that led to its downfall. Anxious depositors rushed to withdraw their money over concern for the bank’s health, causing its collapse, which may serve as "an extinction-level event for startups," according to Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan. The Biden administration had earlier assured SVB depositors that they would have access to all of their funds on Sunday. The joint statement from the Treasury Department, Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) also emphasized that the action would come at no cost to US taxpayers. "Today we are taking decisive actions to protect the U.S. economy by strengthening public confidence in our banking system," the joint statement said. "This step will ensure that the U.S. banking system continues to perform its vital roles of protecting deposits and providing access to credit to households and businesses in a manner that promotes strong and sustainable economic growth." Biden delivered his Monday remarks in a short briefing before traveling to California, where he is set to announce the sale of nuclear submarines to Australia. https://dailycaller.com/2023/03/13/biden-desantis-florida-transgender-kids-sinful-national-law/ ‘Close To Sinful’: Biden Floats Possibility Of Nation-Wide Transgender Law President Joe Biden appeared to criticize Ron DeSantis on his handling of transgender youth and floated the possibility of a nation-wide transgender law in an interview clip released Monday. “What’s going on in Florida, is as my mother would say, ‘close to sinful.’ I mean, it’s just terrible what they’re doing,” Biden said while speaking with actor Kal Penn. Kal Penn previews interview with Biden, discusses guest-hosting "The Daily Show"-Play 2:12-2:56 DeSantis has led an administration-wide effort to ban sex change treatments for minors. He has said doctors should be sued for performing sex changes on children and suspended a state attorney refusing to adhere to the child sex change ban. DeSantis also requested public universities report how many students they treated for “gender dysphoria,” and in October, the Florida Board of Medicine voted to ban sex change surgeries and hormone therapy for children under 18. Dylan Mulvaney, a man who identifies as a woman and has garnered attention on social media for using hyper-feminine stereotypes, asked Biden in October if he thinks states should “have the right” to ban “gender-affirming health care.” “I don’t think any state or anybody should have the right to do that, as a moral question and a legal question,” Biden responded. “I just think it’s wrong,” Biden added. “I feel very, very strongly that you should have every single solitary right, including, including use of your gender identity bathroom in public.” https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/videos/women-now-binge-drinking-more-than-men-for-first-time-in-history-doctor-warns Women now binge drinking more than men for first time in history, doctor warns For the first time in history, women are outpacing men in binge drinking, which is a growing concern among health officials as overall drinking for young adults is on the rise. As the pandemic came to an end, they seem to be drinking more than ever. In 2020, during the pandemic, we saw a continuing decline in binge drinking among college-age students. Most were isolated or at home as classes moved online. Group activities or parties where drinking would be prevalent simply were not happening. “In 2021, there has been an uptick, particularly among women. Now it turns out on college campuses women are actually binge drinking more than men, for the first time in history,” said Dr. George F. Koob, director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Koob said while drinking overall was down during the pandemic, deaths associated with alcohol were up 25% for not just college students but the general population. Koob believes isolation contributed to mental health problems and substance abuse across the board. However, now we’re back. People are going to parties, and colleges and bars are open again. Restaurants are serving bottomless brunch, and wineries and breweries are ready to pour. “It’s what we call the alcohol deprivation effect. People tend to really rebound in drinking after a period of not drinking.” Koob said. “We are a little concerned that this spring and spring break is going to be a return to a good amount of binge drinking. I just want to caution everyone that when you start hitting the binge drinking level you start doing really bad things to your body.” So, where does this leave this new group of women who are binge drinking more than ever before? Koob said knowing what a standard drink is and your limit is important to taking care of your health. As social media trends encourage dangerous “hacks” to binge drinking, including the viral “BORGs” or “blackout rage gallons” which combine water, electrolytes, and vodka, TikTok is specifically pushing the misconception that this drink will keep you hydrated while drinking copious amounts of liquor. https://nypost.com/2023/03/12/fight-among-200-brawlers-at-louisiana-hs-ends-in-10-arrests/ Massive fight among 200 students, parents at Louisiana high school ends in 10 arrests An explosive fight at a Louisiana high school among nearly 200 students and parents ended with several cops injured and at least 10 arrests. Swarms of police officers responded early March 8 to a “major campus disturbance” at East Baton Rouge Readiness Alternative School, finding a loaded gun abandoned on the ground, WBRZ reported. Officials say one fight broke out and escalated, spilling out into the school’s courtyard and gym. By the time police arrived, there were about 200 people involved in brawls across the campus. Videos of the chaos taken inside the school’s gym show chairs getting tossed and students being detained by law enforcement. One shocking video shows a sheriff’s deputy forcefully hitting a student’s face into a brick wall. The officer was trying to arrest a 17-year-old student, authorities said. Police said the teen had punched the officer in the face and tried to bite him, which led to the aggressive encounter captured on video. The teen was among those charged with battery on an officer and resisting arrest. Officials have not yet determined what triggered the massive melee at the school, which enrolls students who’ve been previously suspended or expelled from other district schools. The NAACP released a statement Wednesday saying it was reviewing videos from the incident to decide if the aggressive police response captured on video was appropriate. The fight allegedly started with a small group of students but escalated into a larger clash involving parents and students fighting police as well. One witness told WBRZ the brawl erupted when a girl who wasn’t a student at the school and her mom showed up to fight another girl — and that it escalated from there. Students were allegedly locked inside the gym during the fight. One responding police officer sustained injuries including a broken hip and head lacerations. Also among those arrested were three students charged with battery on a police officer, a felony. Five other students were arrested for disturbing the peace, including an 18-year-old girl who was arrested on counts of unlawful disruption of the operation of a school and resisting arrest, and a 17-year-old girl hit with disturbing the peace and resisting arrest. All of those arrested were students between 15 and 18. None of the parents or other adults at the scene were taken into custody. When Damian Lillard had his 71-point game, it wasn't just a new Portland Trail Blazers record, it was also a record for the most points scored against the Houston Rockets. We know the record for scoring against the Knicks is Wilt Chamberlain with 100 points back on March 2, 1962 (see yesterday's episode)… so, how about the rest of the NBA?Lillard broke a record previously held by Allen Iverson, who scored 58 against Houston in 2002. The Answer still has one of the team-specific records that comes up when you go down the Stathead rabbit hole: the most points scored in a game against the New Orleans Hornets — specifically the New Orleans Hornets, with 55 on April 20, 2003. While more than a few generations of NBA fans believe the Sacramento Kings franchise began its life when the team played (and lost) its very first exhibition game against the Los Angeles Clippers at the warehouse-converted ARCO Arena (I) on October 25, 1985 - serious students of the game know better. Indeed, a very rich and colorful series of previous incarnations dating back to nearly a century earlier - beginning as the primordial semi-pro "industrial league" Rochester (NY) Seagrams in the mid-1920s, and evolving into the NBL, BAA and eventually NBA versions of the Rochester Royals - historically confirm the Kings as one of the sport's oldest consecutively run professional outfits. Gerry Schultz (Cincinnati's Basketball Royalty: A Brief History) joins the podcast this week to delve into the club's pivotal, and, at times, legendary, 15-year stint as the Cincinnati Royals (1957-72) - when the franchise and the league both came of age by virtue of the play of some of the NBA's greatest all-time performers. Join us for a trek back to the old Cincinnati Gardens (and frequently, other "home" courts in Cleveland, Dayton, Columbus, and even Omaha, NE) - as we look back at the exploits of eventual basketball Hall of Famers like Oscar Robertson, Jerry Lucas, Maurice Stokes, Clyde Lovellette, Wayne Embry, and Jack Twyman - and ponder how today's Kings might better memorialize the legacy of the club's mostly forgotten time in the Queen City. THANKS to OldSchoolShirts.com for their sponsorship of this week's show (promo code "GOODSEATS" for 10% off all orders!)
In this episode of Sports the NEMO Way we bring Oscar Robertson to the table for discussion.
[Enjoy Adam's podcast? Buy him a coffee | Thanks for your support]I'm excited to welcome Basketball Hall of Fame legend, Dave Cowens. The first NBA Most Valuable Player to appear on the podcast. In this fun, insightful and wide-ranging conversation, Dave discusses his days at Newport Catholic HS and run-ins with the assistant principal, who also doubled as his basketball coach. Dave details his recruitment to Florida State University – where he was a four-year standout with the Seminoles.Dave recounts an intriguing letter he wrote to Celtics legend – and then-Cincinnati Royals coach, Bob Cousy – ahead of the 1970 NBA Draft. Cowens was a busy man in the lead-up to his rookie debut with the Celtics. During the week, he played in Boston's Neighborhood Basketball League (BNBL) and on weekends commuted to New York to play in the famed Rucker League. For good measure, Dave teamed with ‘Pistol' Pete Maravich and stole the show at the Maurice Stokes Memorial Basketball Game.Of course, there's plenty of NBA and Celtics discussion. We chat about the two titles Dave won with Boston in the 1970s, how he prepared for games and battled with all-time great centers that often had significant height advantages over him. We even found time to talk about Larry Legend, too. This conversation primarily covers Dave's on-court days. Hopefully he'll return to the show to discuss his post-playing career and life after basketball. This is a candidate for my favorite episode yet.If you enjoy this chat and you're on Twitter, I'd be most grateful if you'd consider a quick tweet to Bob Ryan (@GlobeBobRyan), thanking him for the connect with Mr. Cowens. This conversation would not have happened without Bob's continued generosity.Follow: Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | FacebookListen: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts | OvercastSubscribe: NBA-history newsletterE-mail Adam any time. Wade is the only one who doesn't have Bob Cousy.

What an honor this episode was. So much history and basketball nostalgia in this one as Tom Van Arsdale takes the time to share his basketball experiences with us. This may be the most unique episode of them all as this is the first guest we have had from the golden era of high school, collegiate and professional basketball. Tom Van Arsdale and his identical twin brother Dick Van Arsdale starred at Emmerich Manual High School and both went on to play for legendary coach Branch McCracken at Indiana University. They would go on to be drafted back-to-back in the 1965 NBA Draft and again play together in 1976-77 for the Phoenix Suns for their final NBA season. They were both 3x All-Stars and are the first brothers to play in an NBA All-Star game. You could say they’re fairly similar. Tom still holds the NBA record for most career games played without a playoff appearance. He played 929 games without making a single playoff appearance. Van Arsdale is also the highest scoring player (14,232 career points) in NBA history without a playoff appearance. Even though Tom never did play in a playoff game, he has some amazing and historic experiences that he shares including amazing stories about the high school hoops scene in Indiana, Bobby Plump, Branch McCracken, his time as a Hoosier, journey to NBA, playing with Oscar Robertson, Tiny Archibald, Wilt Chamberlain, the NBA lifestyle in the 60’s, Van Arsdale Art, his book and MUCH more. There is truly no episode quite like this one and we can’t thank Tom enough for his time. It’s rare to have the opportunity to speak with an All-Star from the golden era of basketball and learn about some of the all-time greats from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. It was fascinating to learn from his experiences and took us back in time to hear about how different the league, the business and the game was and how it has evolved. We also have a surprise appearance from another former All-Star in this episode… bet you can’t guess who! Thanks Tom Van Arsdale! The Best of TVC: Ed interviews with Tommy Hawkins, the Emmy Award-nominated broadcaster, renaissance man and former NBA star who passed away in 2017 at the age of 80. Tommy Hawkins enjoyed a 10-year career in the NBA for both the Minneapolis Lakers, the Los Angeles Lakers and the old Cincinnati Royals, playing alongside such Hall of Famers as Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor and Oscar Robertson. When his basketball career ended, he embarked on new challenges, first in radio and television (including co-hosting Mid-Morning Los Angeles with Stephanie Edwards and Meredith MacRae, as well as broadcasting for NBC Sports), then as a baseball executive for eighteen years with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Minneapolis Lakers weren’t exactly setting the basketball world on fire in January, 1959. In fact, on January 16th they had a 15/27 won loss record for the season. The 16th was the day the Lakers were scheduled to appear in Charleston, West Virginia’s brand new civic center to play the Cincinnati Royals, and they hoped to break a four game losing streak with the help of their talented rookie player Elgin Baylor. As it turned out, that was not to be. Today we tell the story of why Elgin Baylor boycotted that game in Charleston, part of the history of Appalachia. The Stories podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, RadioPublic, Spotify, TuneIn, IHeart Radio, and on many other apps, all for free. Thanks for listening and thanks for sharing our stories of Appalachian history.

One of the NBA’s original teams was the Rochester Royals. In fact, the Royals won an NBA Championship in 1951. But, Rochester was not an ideal location as the NBA was trying to grow and establish itself in larger cities. So, after the 1956-57 season, the Royals packed up and left for Cincinnati. Cincinnati welcomes the Royals with open arms – at least at first. Tragedy struck the team early on as young and upcoming star Maurice Stokes suffered a devastating head injury and that certainly affected the Royals performance on the floor. And while the tragedy of Stokes is a huge part of the Royals legacy in Cincinnati, they did enjoy some success on the court, particularly in the mid-1960s when they were led by one of the NBA’s all-time greats: Oscar Robertson. However, not even the “BIG O” could get the Royals over the hump and into the NBA Finals. The Royals made the Conference Finals in back-to-back season, 1963 and 1964, but like every other team in the NBA, they couldn’t get past the Boston Celtics. The Royals last appearance in the playoffs was 1967, and by the time 1972 rolled around, it was basically a forgone conclusion that NBA basketball, at least in the form of the Royals, would not make it in Cincinnati and the team relocated to Kansas City (splitting time, at first, in Omaha) and is now known as the Sacramento Kings. Of course, there’s a lot more to the Royals history in Cincinnati and joining Sports’ Forgotten Heroes to talk more about the short history of the Cincinnati Royals is Gerry Schultz the author of, “Cincinnati’s Basketball Royalty: A Brief History: A LOOK BACK at 15 years of Cincinnati Royals NBA Basketball”. Award-winning Cleveland Plain Dealer sports columnist Bill Livingston (George Steinbrenner’s Pipe Dream: The ABL Champion Cleveland Pipers) joins Tim Hanlon to delve deeper into the history of the ill-fated 1960s American Basketball League – this time through the lens of one of its (and ultimately, one of pro sports’) most combustible figures. Livingston describes how Pipers owner (and future New York Yankees “Boss”) George Steinbrenner: • Retooled a local Cleveland industrial amateur team into a fledgling pro club with NBA ambitions; • Traded a player at halftime of a league game, and fired his collegiate hall-of-fame coach in mid-season – and still won a championship; • Convinced a risk-averse college star named Jerry Lucas to spurn surefire NBA stardom with the Cincinnati Royals for partial ownership/oversight of an ambitious, yet financially wobbly ABL franchise; and • Outmaneuvered a similarly-aspirant Abe Saperstein in the race to secure a coveted NBA franchise, only to hasten the demise of the ABL and the financial viability of the Pipers in the process. Thank you Audible for sponsoring this week’s episode!

We continue our #RussellMania series, a deep dive into the life and career of Bill Russell and the Boston Celtics dynasty, with a discussion of the Celtics’ playoff battles with Oscar Robertson and the Cincinnati Royals (now Sacramento Kings) in the mid-1960s. Jason Mann and Rich Kraetsch talk about Robertson’s brilliance beyond simply his legendary triple-double season, how he smashed the record books, how the Royals were an example of some of the bush-league aspects of the 1960s NBA, the relationship between Robertson and Russell, other key Royals including Jerry Lucas and Jack Twyman, and more.
