MURKOWSKI COULD LEAD GOP REVOLT AGAINST TRUMP - 4.21.25

SEASON 3 EPISODE 119: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Senator Lisa Murkowski may be the most important person in the country right now. Her public confession that she too is afraid of the Trump nightmare and her HINTS at talking to Senate colleagues ABOUT her fear – could provide just enough Republican rebellion to rein Trump in. It feels as if she just got it, as if she just understood that yes Trump is Nazi-esque and yes Trump often emulates the Soviets but the closest parallel to him is O'Brien and "The Party" in Orwell's "1984" and the simple terrifying conviction that "the object of power is power." That's why I think when Kristi Garden Noem and Secretary of Defense (and Vodka) Hegseth (if he's still on the job after ANOTHER Signal chat came to light) file their report on the border to Trump this week and tell him no, they don't need to invoke The Insurrection Act, he may do it anyway because... the object of power is power. Murkowski and thirteen other Republican Senators and at most four Republican Representatives can stop this. They can save the country. They can impeach Trump or if they still can’t get over the hump, the 18 of you can use the THREAT to impeach him, to virtually fetter him, to at least control the width and breadth of his damage, to make him know the Senate WILL vote against him. She can also talk to anybody on the Supreme Court except Alito or Thomas. The other seven, in the middle of the damn night - at 1 AM Saturday - stepped in to freeze any further disappearing Americans under the phony premise of The Alien Enemies Act. And there is reason to hope that these Murkowski-led conversations might happen before the iron curtain of dictatorship descends: Later in her confession of fear, she hinted at doing exactly what I just suggested. Meanwhile, how many times can you self-destruct on this? Gavin Newsom dismisses the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case as a "distraction" and calls Democrats sheep for defending the constitution. On the other hand, Senator Ed Markey is crafting a sense of the senate resolution stating Trump cannot again be elected, and cannot again serve, as president or vice president. Damn Straight. B-Block (40:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Musk Crappertruck Owner who claims to also be a "girl dad"; Pennsylvania congressman Dan Meuser kinda blames Governor Josh Shapiro's criticizing Trump for provoking the attempt to incinerate him and his family in the governor's mansion on Passover. And Trump DEI hire Pam Bondi lies that compulsive martyr and 85th Place Olympic Trials finisher Riley Gaines "went to the Olympics." Not unless she bought a ticket, Pam Blondie. C-Block (55:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The renewed Trump bid to ban the Associated Press got me talking to a friend: How MANY times have I been banned, as a reporter? Do you mean this century, or in total? It's... a lot. From the LA Clippers to the ESPN Campus, I've been banned... a lot. And je ne regret rien!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bomani Jones is joined by David Aldridge, of The Athletic, to discuss his new book called “The Basketball 100.” The guys begin the conversation by talking about the process of making the book and some of the forgotten bucket getters in the league like Elgin Baylor and David Bing. (1:00) They also examine the 1970s which could go down as the most forgotten and democratic era of the NBA. From there, David brings up dynasties and it leads Bomani to ask him whether he prefers dominance or parity following his conversation with Mina Kimes earlier this week. (9:35) Then Bomani goes through the list of 100 players and asks David his thought process on them while writing this book. Players like Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Irving, and whether or not Scottie Pippen was underrated or overrated. (28:50) And finally, the guys chat about Moses Malone's boring game, Jimmy Butler being #99 on the list, and why Charles Barkley was easily the best player on the iconic Dream Team. The numbers are staggering... Over 6 decades of work... 300+ covers... and countless stories that go with each one of them. Walter Iooss is the most prolific photographer Sports Illustrated has ever had. There is a reason it's not called Sports Literature, but Sports Illustrated... and that's because of the shooters like Iooss who captured a generation of sports idols with their photos. A time when the only way to see Willie Mays, Elgin Baylor, Lee Trevino, Joe Namath and so many more was through the weekly magazine and the photos provided by men like Walter Iooss. Starting as a teenager, Walter 's love for sports was equally matched with his passion for photography. After sending in a few photos from a NY Giants football game he and his father attended to an editor at SI he was given an assignment... he was so young, his dad had to drive him to it. And from there, a career like none other in the field of Sports Photography was born. From The Catch to Broadway Joe at Super Bowl III, Iooss had a habit of being in the right place at the right time and made a career out of it. Oh... and did we mention his numerous Sports Illustrated Swimsuit shoots? Ever heard of Christie, or Tyra, or Elle or Paulina? A generation of super models helped made famous because they were in front of the lens of a Walter Iooss camera. What's his best shot? Who did he laugh at with the most? How did he get the Swimsuit gig and much more as we talk with the man that helped put SI on the map --- Walter Iooss... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

0:00 ... Show Open and welcome back to Bruce, who is back with the crew after spending a week on the road and missing the last two shows. 2:09 ... Bruce's opening tip on the snake bitten Anthony Davis of the Lakers,  who suffered a hard hit to the head on Wednesday.  His career continues to be plagued by injuries and the timing could not be worse for him. 4:20 ... World B has some very strong feelings about the just announced All-NBA teams and how future selections will be affected by the new rules adopted for next season. 5:40 ... Ross feels Nikola Jokic was robbed of a much deserved All-NBA First team selection thias season. 7:21 ... The Celtics won a tense game 6 against the 76ers on Thursday but in spite of his Celtics winning the game, it was sheer torture for Bruce as he watched the Celtics make many questionable decisions and lose several opportunities to put Philly away before finally prevailing. 8:56 ... Bruce credits Marcus Smart's spirit and aggressiveness for sparking the Celtics to a huge win. 10:24 ... World B and Ross discuss Smart, Jayson Tatum's late scoring surge, and the suffocating Boston defense down the stretch in game 6. 13:12 ... Ross takes issue with a key decision from Philly coach Doc Rivers late in the game regarding an inbounds play. 14:00 ... Bruce has been concerned about the lack of experience of Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla and believes that his game 6 adjustments probably were the result of input from team president Brad Stevens. 16:47 ... World B had flashbacks to Celtics/Hawks in 1988 after watching Thursday's game. 17:32 ... James Harden had a bad game in game 6, but World B feels that the team goes as he goes. 19:02 ... The Suns went into Thursday's game 6 against the Nuggets and it was apparent from very early in the game that it would be a disasterous night for the Suns. 20:24 ... DeAndre Ayton's absence in game 6 left a void that was not going to be filled. 21:55 ... Ayton has been been a virtual "no show" in the entire series against Nikola Jokic.  Ayton has been in somewhat of a funk all season.  It was obvious from the start of the series that DeAndre wanted no part of the Joker and played accordingly. 24:30 ... Ayton may have missed game 6 with a rib contusion, but Bruce believes he also had a case of "Butt Hurt" because of the way he's been dominated by Jokic. 25:29 ... In the Knicks/Heat series, Jalen Brunson willed the Knicks to a win in Wednesday's game 5 and should have been named to one of the three All-NBA Teams. 27:30 ... When Tom Thibodeau sat Julius Randle down in the second quarter, it lit a fire under him as he reentered the game with a vengeance and was a big reason the Knicks won. 30:58 .... The Knicks were the aggressors from the start on Wednesday but Kevin Love and Jimmy Butler played poorly and that will likely change in game 6. 32:01 ... Everyone agrees that RJ Barrett will need to come up big in Friday's game 6 in Miami if the Knicks expect to extend the series to a game 7 on Monday in New York. 34:47 ... World B just can't contain himself when Bruce and Ross give praise to Barrett 35:49 ... Can the Golden State Warriors win a road game against the Lakers on Friday night? 37:22 ... Draymond Green set the tone against LA in game 5 and he is the emotional engine of the Warriors.  He has made some poor decisions along the way, but he is indispensable to the team. 39:13 ... The Warriors have one last chance to extends their streak of 28 consecutive playoff series with at least one road win on Friday.  Bruce and Ross feel that there is a role player that will spark them to victory in game 6. 43:05 ... Anthony Davis is likely to play in game 6 despite suffering a blow to the head on Wednesday.  But Bruce believes Green and Kevon Looney will test him with a physical style on Friday and he'll need to be able to handle it 44:55 .. World B expects a huge game from LeBron James in game 6 ... at least 35 points according to our numbers guru! 46:30 ... Bruce has some stories from his time on the road covering the Warriors/Lakers. 47:45 ... Bruce was really impressed with Lakers coach Darvin Ham and Warriors coach Steve Kerr after interacting with them during three straight pregame interviews. 49:40 ... The Lonnie Walker IV game on Monday night was the most memorable performance Bruce saw in his week of games. 52:18 ... Ross wondered why Bruce didn't do a postgame interview with Kim Kardashian and his answer left everyone blushing.  Hint: Watch it on You Tube and it will make more sense. 53:06 ... World B's final thought concerns West Virginia's head coach Bob Huggins and his homophobic slur on a radio show this week.  Although World B is a huge fan of Huggins, he holds nothing back in his assessment of Huggins' comments. 56:32 ... Bruce discusses "The Two Js" in Boston, Jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum and wonders if this Dynamic Duo will follow the career arc of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen with championships or Jerry West and Elgin Baylor who made it to the NBA Finals multiple times but never won a ring together. 58:39 ... Ross' final thought is on the Phoenix Suns' aborted effort to place their games on free TV next season. TRT 59:56

January 14, 1964. Thousands of basketball fans have braved a massive snowstorm in Boston to watch the biggest names in basketball – from Bill Russell to Oscar Robertson to Elgin Baylor – in the 14th annual NBA All-Star Game. But just ten minutes before the game is supposed to start, the players are nowhere to be found. The court is empty. Fans stomp their feet in frustration. Little do they know that all 20 NBA All-Stars have crammed into one locker room and barricaded the door, refusing to leave until the team owners agree to their demands.Today, the 1963-64 All-Stars take an important – but extremely risky – stand against the rich and powerful men who run the National Basketball Association. What were these players fighting for? And why was the 1964 All-Star Game the perfect setting to stage one of the most important protests in sports history?Special thanks to our guests: Dave Zarum, author of NBA 75: The Definitive History, Rich Kraetsch and Jason Mann, co-hosts of the Over and Back Classic NBA Podcast, and NBA legend Wayne Embry, a Hall of Famer and NBA All-Star from 1961 to 1965. In the 1950s to the early 1960s many talented black basketball players never made it to the NBA or the ABA, where did they end up? A. They played in independent leagues such as Rucker's B. They played in Independent Leagues such as Sonny Hill C. They played in Independent Leagues such as Baker's League D. They played in Independent Leagues such as Future Leagues in Philly E. All of the above F. I do not know enough about that history to make a decision Today, we continue the Podcast series sharing the sit down we had with Donald Ducky Birts, The Risk Taker, among first African American Businessman in Camden NJ and Semi Sports Professional who was active in the civil rights movement, friend of Dr. MLK Jr. and Rev. Jesse Jackson and ran the local civil rights movements here in Philly and Camden NJ. We learned a lot about his life and a part of history that we never considered as it relates to civil rights, professional sports and those who we never hear about but who have worked tirelessly to help reposition the black and brown position and improve relations between races, people we can look to for inspiration such as Ducky. We continue his story and a reading of his book in Part 2 of the series on Ducky. We will read from chapters two and three and skip chapters 4 and four and wrap up this part with chapter five, looking at Ducky's involvement and contribution in and to Sports, Politics and the Civil Rights. We will break up the episode in segments sharing some moments of the interview we had with Ducky, which also features Co-host Donte Nelson and others. Here's an excerpt of the reading for today which is worth sharing here: “The Baker League consistently ran out enough star quality players to win a National Basketball Association (NBA) championship. You have to understand that at the time, the NBA teams were bringing in a limited number of blacks into the league. If you weren't Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, Elgin Baylor or Guy Rodgers, the nations' highest profile players, you had to hope that a General Manager or a Head Coach would demand to bring in such players as Sam Jones from North Carolina, a Willis Reid from Grambling, or an Earl Monroe from Winston-Salem State Teachers College…. But many talented black players never made it to the NBA. Instead, they played in …,” Listen to the podcast for the answer as we interview the stalwart and cardinal black Hall-of-Famer Ducky and read from his book “Ducky, The Risk Taker,” by Donald Ducky Birts as told to Kendall Wilson, Narrated by Renaldo McKenzie, only on The Neoliberal Round Podcast, Season 5, episode 11 Part 2 of a four-part series. Elgin Baylor's was undoubtedly one of the greatest players of all time, but his legacy in basketball history is complicated. He once averaged 38 points per game for the entire 1962 season, but that was the same year that fellow Laker Wilt Chamberlain averaged 50. Baylor's own greatness was overshadowed by his teammate. And despite his personal achievements, he never won a championship and lost the Finals eight times. Yet as soon as he retired in 1971, the Lakers immediately set the North American pro sports record for a winstreak with 33 straight victories before winning the NBA championship that very season. Was all of that pure luck, or was Baylor's absence a real blessing to the team? The man flew high, both metaphorically and literally, but the legacy he left behind is one of controversy.CREDITSRick Loayza: Head researcher, writer, and voiceJacob Loayza: Editor, producer, and publisher MUSIC"This or That" by Reks"Horizons" by Roa SPORTS HISTORY NETWORKsportshistorynetwork.comsportshistorynetwork.com/podcasts/basketball-history-101/ FACEBOOKm.facebook.com/Basketball-History-101-103801581493027/ BUSINESS CONTACTbballhistory101@gmail.com

Elgin Baylor was undoubtedly one of the greatest players of all time. He is the third-greatest scorer ever in terms of points per game. Not only that, but his entrance to the NBA revolutionized the game forever. He was the first person to really use his incredible jumping ability to create a deadly advantage, turning an otherwise horizontal sport into a vertical one as well. He could stay in the air for what seemed like forever, and players like Dr. J, Kobe Bryant, and even Michael Jordan have copied this part of their game from him. Without Elgin Baylor, we might never have seen the greatness of a lot of the players that have come since his time.CREDITSRick Loayza: Head researcher, writer, and voiceJacob Loayza: Editor, producer, and publisher MUSIC"This or That" by Reks"Horizons" by Roa SPORTS HISTORY NETWORKsportshistorynetwork.comsportshistorynetwork.com/podcasts/basketball-history-101/ FACEBOOKm.facebook.com/Basketball-History-101-103801581493027/ BUSINESS CONTACTbballhistory101@gmail.com

The Far Middle episode 69 celebrates the 69-win NBA season by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers, a record for victories in a season that would stand until the 72 wins by Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen’s 1995-96 Chicago Bulls team. The Lakers' star-studded lineup (including Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Pat Riley, and Jerry West) not only won the NBA championship that year but also 33 straight games—a record that stands today. Staying in the late 60s and early 70s era, Nick discusses the final years of Pablo Picasso’s life, a colorful and expressive point in the artist’s perpetual changing career when he was massively prolific. Also at that time, in 1969, French writer Henri Charrière published Papillon, which Nick highly recommends. The book would be made into a movie starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman the year after the Lakers' 69-win championship season. And just as critics panned Picasso’s works at the end of his career, they similarly panned Papillon’s screen adaptation. Nick says to be your own expert when it comes to film and literature. Nick then transitions into an overview of the CNX Foundation Mentorship Academy, which is nearing the start of its second year. Nick describes the Academy’s mission, its first year, and an exciting summer that most recently included a cookout with prospective second-year students. Follow Academy updates at nickdeiuliis.com and at cnx.com. Staying on education, Nick next discusses students, parents, and taxpayers finally starting to hold colleges accountable for the quality of education delivered during the pandemic. Nick closes with a one-of-a-kind, multi-part Far Middle connection going back to the early 1970s and linking Papillon, Pablo Picasso, and “winging-it.”
