It's a special mea culpa episode this week, as we welcome back Szczecin University (Poland) history professor and Episode 289 guest Łukasz Muniowski (Turnpike Team: A History of the New Jersey Nets 1977-2012) for a deep dive into the drama of the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies move to Memphis in 2001 - and an assessment of the winners and losers some 23+ years since.   While Muniowski's current title on the topic (The Grizzlies Migrate to Memphis: From Vancouver Failure to Southern Success) has been out since October, your humble host not only lost track of the book's publishing date, but also the entire audio file of our conversation (originally recorded back in August 2023) - until a recent cloud backup surfaced a redundant version.   It's worth the wait, as we tackle the origin story of the Grizzlies' move from Vancouver's GM Place (now Rogers Arena) to Memphis' Pyramid (and eventually FedEx Forum), the numerous other destination cities rumored in the process, the outsized personalities involved, the motivations behind such a hasty move only six seasons after becoming an expansion franchise, and the aftermath - including whether the Memphis version of the club can be labeled a "success," despite winning only two division titles since bringing pro hoops to Beale Street.    + + +   SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY   SPONSOR THANKS: Newspapers.com (promo code: GSA20):  https://newspapers.com Old School Shirts.com (promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Royal Retros (promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2   BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: The Grizzlies Migrate to Memphis: From Vancouver Failure to Southern Success (2023): https://amzn.to/3xNvWBr   FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

Younger fans of today's Memphis Grizzlies can be forgiven for thinking the NBA franchise has spent the entirety of its 28-year existence playing its still-evolving brand of pro hoops in the FedExForum. But this week's guest - documentary filmmaker and Vancouver, BC native Kat Jayme ("The Grizzlie Truth;" "Finding Big Country") - is here to remind us that the "Grizz" actually got its start as one of two 1995 Canadian expansion teams (the other: the still-vibrant Toronto Raptors), scratching out its initial six seasons of chaotic existence in Cascadia country. Despite five coaches, a woeful .219 winning percentage, a raft of questionable draft picks, and an economically challenging US/Canadian exchange rate - Jayme fondly remembers a team from her late 1990s youth which Vancouver embraced with unbridled enthusiasm - yet wonders not only why they left GM Place for Beale Street, but also what might have been had they stayed put in Rain City. + + +  WATCH EARLY & OFTEN: Finding Big Country (2018) The Grizzlie Truth (trailer; 2022) Born Identities (NBA Films short; 2021) We the West (2020) I'm Just Here For the Riot (ESPN Films "30 For 30" documentary; not yet released; 2023) FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram (+ Threads): https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

Dolich spent 15+ years in the Athletics' front office from 1980-94 during the Walter Haas era - inheriting the remnants of Charlie Finley's parsimonious ownership, helping usher in "Billy Ball", nurturing a promising farm system, and ultimately, reaping the rewards with a 1989 World Series championship over the market's "other team" - the San Francisco Giants. But before we get there, we take an important introductory detour into Dolich's other exploits, replete with notable stops of keen interest to a certain little podcast - like the NASL's Washington Diplomats, the original National Lacrosse League's Maryland Arrows, and the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies.

#actor #athlete #stuntman #stunts #mascot This was a fun podcast episode with a guy living a fun fulfilled life. Trevor Jones was an athlete and it led to a friend suggesting he go to an audition for an NBA team. Trevor was perfect for the role they were looking to fill and he got the part and doors have been opening ever since. Clever Trevor became Trevor "Grizz" Jones the Vancouver Grizzlies mascot and he unleashed his immense athleticism and basketball skill on the world! He spent years as part of the incredible entertainment package the NBA delivers and was a highlight nightly on a huge stage! He also represented the NBA in the first ever NBA regular season game outside North America in Tokyo, Japan. Another highlight was winning the mascot dunk competition at the All Star game in Cleveland, Ohio and being at the spectacle that is All Star weekend! His NBA exposure led to opportunities in the film industry and he nailed the auditions again and a new career was spawned. He started as a stunt double in Police Academy the TV series and soon after became the lead actor in a kids movie called Big and Hairy. It is great to hear about how one door closed and another door opened to a life long career that has provided him a great life and taken him around the world. Trevor is still a great athlete and has a deep love for many sports and we got into a great conversation about many different teams he loves and supports. We discussed the Olympics and the the way it was embraced here. We were both watching the Canadian national soccer team at the World Cup and we talked about the fun it was to watch and support them. The conversation flowed into the Vancouver Canucks playoff run in 2011 and how the local people again embraced the team and got behind them with huge support. Also his Philadelphia Eagles have the best record in the NFL currently and it brings up the high point for their fans winning the Super Bowl in 2018 was also fun to reminisce about with a true fan! We could have talked sports for days and we probably will going forward! This podcast was a gem and so is Trevor we are certain you will appreciate the time he gave us to shed some light into his life. You would be hard-pressed to find a bigger fan of the Vancouver Grizzlies than Kat Jayme. Not only did Kat grow up a fan of the ill-fated NBA franchise, but she's parlayed that childhood passion into a number of films, including We The West, 2018's festival hit Finding Big Country (in which she successfully tracked down NBA enigma Bryant “Big Country Reeves), and The Grizzlie Truth, in which she seeks to investigate a sprawling sports mystery: who is responsible for robbing Vancouver of the Grizzlies? To die-hard fans of the Vancouver Grizzlies, the team's abrupt move to Memphis in 2001 is much more than a sore spot, it's an unsolved mystery and possibly a criminal conspiracy. And there is no one on this planet better suited to tackle this mystery than Kat Jayme, and her findings – in the form of wildly entertaining, wholly gripping, and surprisingly heartwarming The Grizzlie Truth – has its world premiere at the 2022 Vancouver International Film Festival. In this fascinating episode of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast, Kat reflects on her spectacular journey into the heart of a baffling sports mystery. Episode sponsor: Fish Flight Entertainment

NCAA Champion, 14 year NBA vet, and overall basketball legend Mike Bibby joins Jordan Daly, Craig Smith, and Mike Taylor for Episode 11 of the Underdogs Podcast. Bibby starts of the episode by talking about his early life, and what it was like being a son of a former NBA legend and champion, Henry Bibby. He then goes into winning a high school championship in Arizona and why he chose to play at the University of Arizona. From there, Bibby takes us through his time at Arizona, which includes winning a National Championship. He tells us why he decided not to go into the draft after his freshman year championship season. He also talks about his Draft Night experience and how he almost went 1st overall to the Clippers, but instead was drafted 2nd by the Vancouver Grizzlies - a team he told in the pre draft that he did not want to play for them. Then, Bibby takes us step by step through his NBA career. He talks about his start to his career in Vancouver, and how it all built up to his trade to the Sacramento Kings. He walked us through the whole trade process, and why he asked to be traded to Sacramento. This led us into talking about that first year with the Kings, where they achieved an NBA best 61-21 record, taking the first seed. We couldn't talk about that season without asking about the infamous 2002 Western Conference Finals between the Kings and the Lakers (with Kobe Bryant and Shaq!). Bibby walked us through his Game 5 game winning buzzer beater. We then looked into some documents that claimed that Game 6 of this series was rigged in favor of the Lakers in order for the NBA to get more ticket sales and ad revenue. In game 6, the Lakers had 18 free throws in the 4th quarter alone, more than the Kings had the entire game. Bibby confesses that he still cannot watch this game over again. NBA refs have come forward and admitted to the fact that this game was rigged to extend the series. Bibby says they were the best team that year, and that everyone knew it - Bibby was robbed of an NBA championship. We then ask Bibby about how he felt about never getting an All-Star nod (even though his stats were better than some other All-Stars during his years) and how that made him feel. We close out the episode by talking about Bibby references throughout the culture, coaching, his shoe collection, and being a member of the first Jordan class. This episode's main theme is that you need to define your own success, and not let anyone else define it for you.
