Blue Chips featured Nick Nolte, fantastic as a college hoops coach, and young Shaq & Penny Hardaway as recruits, but in 2024 is the booster Happy played by the late JT Walsh the real hero? Join us for Blue Chips, a college basketball movie from 1994 starring Nick Nolte, Shaq O'Neal, Penny Hardaway, Ed O'Neill, Alfre Woodard, Bob Cousy, Mary McDonnell, JT Walsh, Bob Cousy, Matt Nover, Marques Johnson, Robert Wuhl, Bobby, Knight, Rick Pitino, George Raveling, Larry Bird, Dick Vitale… You get the point. Maybe like me, this one grew on you when you realized the movie wasn't about the big game. In 1994, everyone was still taught to believe a player who wanted anything more than a scholarship was a greedy leech with no love for the game…and we just never really asked where all the money did go. This movie did help that conversation along, but it also had some fantastic performances - even by non-actors - some really funny scenes and, of course, probably the best movie basketball playing ever.
0:00 ... Ross hello and welcome ... introduces Bruce, Michael, and guest Kevin Winter ... this is episode #114 in honor of Scotty Pippen Jr. 1:20 ... Ross's Bet Online live commercial read 2:15 ... Bruce complains that with two Celtics fans on the show, show #114 is NOT in honor of Boston legend Bob Cousy. Ross expertly shuts Bruce down with a zinger that left a mark! 2:46 ... Bruce introduces our guest Kevin Winter, the long-time studio host of the NBA on ESPN Radio. 3:53 ... Ross tees the crew up for a discussion of Team USA as they finished their tune-up games on Monday against Germany. Kevin feels the teams around the world not only can compete with team USA, but want to kick some American butt. 5:40 ... Bruce points out how LeBron James has been the dominant player for Team USA in their "friendly" matches. 7:04 ... Stephen Curry will be a huge factor and Kevin discusses some lineups he'd like to see Steve Kerr try. 8:13 ... Jaylen Brown was passed over for Team USA in favor of teammate Derrick White and Kevin said that Grant Hill always wanted White on the team, although he feels Jalen Brunson would have also been a solid choice. 10:02 ... Bruce asks if White's time in the San Antonio Spurs system prepared him to become the winning player he's turned out to be. Kevin feels that former Spur players become excellent fits on the teams they end up playing for. 11:50 ... Ross wonders if Chris Paul will be a great fit in San Antonio and be successful. Kevin is not so sure. 13:17 ... Bruce asks Kevin what it was like to be in the middle of hosting the NBA Finals live on the radio while riding the emotional roller coaster as a fan of the Celtics. 16:20 ... World B wants to know if Kevin feels the Celtics can repeat as champs next year? Kevin has his eye on the Bucks with Giannis and Damian Lillard but is less high on the Sixers. 18:56 ... Bruce asks Kevin about his fellow ESPN Radio analyst PJ Carlesimo and some of their adventures in dining and how the coach makes sure food for the team is a priority and everyone on the radio team is properly fed. 22:32 ... Bruce tells a quick story about another "old school" coach, the late Paul Silas who worked with Bruce at ESPN and was like PJ in that he always picked up the tab for dinner for the crew because coaches knew that armies travel on their stomachs. 23:03 ... Ross asks Kevin about the mysterious Twitter/X fan "Yanos," and gets a hilarious response. 24:14 .... The LA Clippers have made some very strange moves as they get ready to move into their new building next season and Kevin is not optimistic about their chances for the upcoming season. 27:17 ... What do we make of the crosstown Lakers? Can LeBron continues playing at such a high level as he approaches his 40th birthday? Kevin says his days of winning championships are gone. 29:15 ... World B feels the Lakers have been good, but the conference is really tough and Anthony Davis & LeBron may not be physically up to the task of winning big in the postseason. 31:45 ... What about the Denver Nuggets? Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, as always, are the indispensable guys. Russell Westbrook and his aggressive style will work well off the bench for Denver next season. 35:18 ... Bruce tees Kevin up for a nice rant on Evan Mobley's max contract. 36:52 ... Jalen Brunson left money on the table on his recent contract and while it was a great gesture on Brunson's part, there could be unintended consequences. 38:44 ... Brunson's move puts the pressure on the Knicks front office to use the money to bring in more talent. 39:39 ... Kevin thinks Brunson may have gotten some grief from the Players Association over his act of generosity. 41:34 ... Bruce wants to know how Klay Thompson will fit in with the Mavs ... Kevin thinks Klay will help Luka Doncic learn how to win and he also likes the potential of Dereck Lively. 45:45 ... The guys discuss NBA executive Pat Williams and what he meant to the NBA and also to the Orlando Magic, the franchise he co-founded. Williams passed away this past week at the age of 84. 48:27 ... Ross thanks Kevin for joining us and says goodbye TRT 49:29

4-24-2023 Passed Ball Show. John spends this program questioning the value of the regular season of the four major U.S. team sports. With so many teams now given a spot in the postseason, there is limited value in a team having the best record in a given division- let alone the entire league. John makes some suggestions to better incentivize finishing with the best record of a given league, such as an automatic berth in the conference (or league) championship series. John then congratulates the Pittsburgh Pirates- first for their solid start to the 2023 baseball season, then for the belief in their manager to give him an extension. John brings up the Houston Astros terrible (at the time) decision to fire Bo Porter during an organizational decision based rebuild and doubles down on his appreciation for an organizational belief in a manager even when the team is losing. Finally, John questions whether there is a need for a NBA team to have an enforcer- a shittalking, trouble starting player whose sole goal is to get under the skin of the opponent's star(s). And during today's Saving Sports History segment, John talks about Lave Cross, the first American League Game, Happy Chandler, Bob Cousy, past NFL Drafts, Andy Cooper, Omar Vizquel, Chipper Jones, and Lee Westwood.
K-State senior PG Markquis Nowell ended up getting selected as the Bob Cousy Award winner in '22-23 basketball season!

Bob Cousy had to prove himself at every level of his basketball career. He barely made his high school team and did not play significant minutes until his senior year. The same thing happened in university at College of the Holy Cross. And when the NBA draft came around, he was still largely unwanted, only landing with the Celtics on accident. On today's episode, Jason and Producer Rob G start things off with a few thoughts on Jerry West's very public verbal takedown of JJ Redick. Redick famously said a few months ago that Hall of Fame players like Bob Cousy were being overrated by the basketball media given that he was playing against 'plumbers' on a nightly basis. Well, The Logo fired back in a big way over the weekend. While West didn't refute Redick's 'plumbers' comment (because it's factually accurate), he did point out that Redick was never more than a role player and as such should know better than to talk out of turn about Hall of Fame-caliber players (which is absolutely fair). It's one of those rare instances where both guys on either side of the debate were right. Later, J-Mac and Rob G engage in a war of words of their own over Lamar Jackson's current contract situation. Both guys agree that Jackson deserves a big pay day, where they disagree though is whether or not Jackson should hold out for a fully guaranteed deal. The running narrative over the years has been that you can't build a dynasty if the quarterback is making all the money, and that's precisely why guys like Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes took less than market value. On the other hand, teams like the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints have consistently proven that the NFL salary cap is kind of a myth. Extra Points with Cousin Sal, Dave Dameshek & Charlotte Wilder
The Extra Points gang is ready for NFL schedule release day as Dave proclaims the NFL has taken over as the 365 days a year sport that everyone talks about. The guys get right to it discussing Game 5 of the Penguins/Rangers series and Jacob Trouba's questionable hit on Sidney Crosby. Eddie doesn't think it was a dirty hit and disagrees with Dave. After Eddie gives his rant Dave says Rangers' goalie Igor Shesterkin will never win a Stanley Cup but the Rangers will survive because of this cheap shot. Eddie is still upset about an overturned goal in Game 1 and that the hit on Crosby was a hockey play and calls the Penguins the whiniest team in the NHL. Eddie admits his girlfriend is not thrilled about this potential haircut as the series continues.Next, the guys discuss last night's NBA playoffs as the Bucks come back to beat the Celtics as Jrue Holiday's impressive defense takes over; although Dave is more impressed with how Jrue spells his name. The NBA playoffs continue to be hard to predict as Memphis blows out the Warriors to keep their series going. As for tonight's games Martin takes the Miami Heat to beat the Sixers in Game 6 and can't imagine seeing Chris Paul having another bad game as the Suns look to close out the Mavericks. The NBA announces they will be now giving out Postseason awards named after Magic Johnson and Larry Bird as well as Bob Cousy and Oscar Robertson. Dave thinks the NBA should take it a step further and name the divisions after legends. Sal thinks HBO's Winning Time might have had an influence of doing this and they should also name a broken trophy after Jerry West. Then the guys discuss if the NFL did this which legends would you name the awards after? With Tom Brady going to FOX Sports after he retires for a monster $375 million dollar deal will this change how you watch football. Plus, a trip on the Riverboat Casino to discuss who took the biggest risk this off-season; FOX Sports with Tom Brady, the Cleveland Browns trading for Deshaun Watson or Shailene Woodley breaking up with Aaron Rodgers. This leads to Dave pointing out the NFL really should come down hard and suspend Watson for a significant amount of games. While Sal says the Steelers might have taken the biggest risk by selecting Kenny Pickett with their first-round pick when no other team was going to take him. Finally, the guys make their picks of the day as Shek likes the Toronto Maple Leafs to finally vanquish the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Today, GoJo and Brandon try to figure out which “Rocky” movie was the best after Brandon finished the franchise for the first time (00:00:49 - 00:08:18). Then they discuss Jimmy Butler making believers outta Heat haters, Ja Morant's play vs the Golden State Warriors, Ben Simmons' back surgery and JJ Redick's hate for Bob Cousy (00:08:50 - 00:39:49). Then the guys are joined by CFB writer/Formula 1 correspondent Spencer Hall about the race in Miami this weekend (00:41:05 - 01:03:03), before finishing with stories Stanley Cup Playoffs, Drake feeding the trolls and finally, they tackle Dave Chappelle getting tackled.
