For a film built around a song titled Remember Me, Pixar's Coco sure has proven absolutely unforgettable in the seven years since its release. Directed by past Script Apart guest Lee Unkrich, the animation told the story of Miguel – a young boy voiced by Anthony Gonzalez who is accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead, where he seeks the help of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather to return him to his family and reverse their ban on music. It's quite simply one of the richest and boldest family movies of all time, confronting ideas around death, legacy and remembrance in a way that moved the needle culturally in this way that only Pixar can. Much like how Inside Out gave parents a framework for talking to their kids about emotions, Coco is renowned today as a text that helps facilitate conversations with children about what it means when someone passes away. In the conversation you're about to hear, co-writer Matthew Aldrich drops by to break down the film in detail. We discuss the musical version of the film that was in development before he joined the project. We get into how the film's villain, Ernesto Del La Cruz, represents the folly of chasing the wrong sort of remembrance: a remembrance of celebrity and fame, rather than family. And you'll hear about what makes Remember Me such a beautiful part of Coco – the genesis of that astounding piece of music, that lands like a gut punch when we hear it for the final time in act three.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. In this episode, we dive deep into the complexities of relationships affected by childhood trauma and our life experiences. Trauma isn't just an event in the past—it leaves a "trauma footprint" that can shape how we connect with others, often in ways we're not fully aware of. We explore the spectrum of trauma, discussing why certain behaviors make sense as coping mechanisms, even when they create challenges in relationships. From poor communication patterns to emotional reactivity, we uncover how unresolved trauma can interfere with intimacy and trust between partners. We discuss strategies for healing, emphasizing the importance of recognizing patterns, regulating emotions, and fostering open, validating communication. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for couples facing complex issues. We also explore the vital role of support systems in the healing process, offering insights into how friends and family can be more supportive. Join us as we discuss the journey of healing from trauma, the importance of healthy relationship dynamics, and how to reconcile in the present to build a stronger, more connected partnership. Turning 40 and Learning to Respect YourselfAnthony Gonzalez spent several years in his early teens taking care of three younger siblings and a younger cousin after his mom and aunt started using drugs. He and the younger kids ultimately moved in with their grandmother where he first encountered what it meant to be raised by a village of aunts, uncles and extended family. He followed some older relatives into the business of selling drugs, which ultimately led him to getting arrested and serving time in prison. It was there that he began to write, reliving and telling stories from his life. Much of that writing turned into his book, From Prison to Peace, The PLUSH Lyfe. Guest BioAnthony Jae Gonzalez (aka Papi Jae) is Taking Steps Towards Peace Love Unity Success Happiness (PLUSH). My Goal is just to bring back those communities where people are capable to: Cultivate positive relationships, Practice self-care, Embrace forgiveness, Help others, Set realistic and meaningful goals, Practice gratitude, Embrace positivity & love their neighbor. Sounds easier said than done yet that's the goal & we aren't stopping till we there...Turning 40 and Learning to Respect YourselfAt 13, Anthony Gonzalez was forced into the role of provider for his younger siblings and cousin after his mom and aunt started using drugs. Neighbors helped as much as they could but Anthony found it unbearable to keep food on the table for the younger kids. He made it work for several years and, when he hit his breaking point, a neighbor called an aunt for help. Shortly after, he and his siblings and cousin moved in with his grandmother. It took some time, but Anthony learned to trust that someone would be there if something happened. He says that, as a young man, he didn't believe in much and he wouldn't depend on anybody.Anthony had never seen how a village comes together to raise children until he moved in with his grandmother and the Spanish side of his family. He may have lived with his grandmother, but all his aunts and uncles, and even the wider community, helped raise him and his siblings. His childhood left a mark, though, and he made some bad decisions as a young man. He was tired of working all the time and still being broke. He figured he wasn't going to use drugs, but he knew he could make good money by selling them. Some family members were already involved “on the streets” and they vouched for him and showed him the ropes. He moved to upstate New York, which was a lucrative spot for someone in his business. But then things shifted. He started a small business as a contractor working with someone who owned multiple properties. He was in his first healthy romantic relationship. He had gotten back in touch with his son, who was six at the time. He stopped selling drugs and focused on his new situation. He was feeling good. Then he got arrested for conspiracy to distribute 5 kilos of crack cocaine and served five years in prison. When he went to prison, initially Anthony was angry - really angry. But at some point he started writing, reliving and telling stories from his life. At first he thought it was a diary for his son - his story in his own words. But it became more; he couldn't stop writing. He started feeling like he was taking weight off his shoulders, like he was putting down his burdens. Every time he filled up a notepad, he'd send it home to his grandmother for safe keeping. Some of his writing he showed to his fellow inmates, who were encouraging. They eventually turned into a book. Then a second book. And two more are in the works. Much of what he shared in his book, From Prison to Peace, The PLUSH Lyfe, is relevant for anyone looking to achieve peace in their life and in their mind. In this episode, we discuss his path from being a “bad guy” to being a...

Episode 89 The Theremin Part 2: Recordings After 1970 Playlist Ultimate Spinach, “(Ballad of The) Hip Death Goddess” from Ultimate Spinach (1968 MGM Records). This American psychedelic rock band was from Boston, Massachusetts, although they had a sound that had more an affinity with the free spirit of San Francisco. The Theremin has a prominent part in this song, following the vocalist and filling in some interesting instrumental parts. Bass and Feedback, Richard Nese; Vocals, Drums, Tabla, Bass Drum, Bells, Chimes, Keith Lahteinen; Vocals, Electric Guitar, Guitar, Kazoo, Barbara Hudson; Vocals, Electric Piano, Electric Harpsichord, Organ, Harpsichord, Twelve-String Guitar, Sitar, Harmonica, Wood Flute, Theremin, Celesta, Ian Bruce-Douglas; Vocals, Lead Guitar, Guitar Feedback, Sitar Drone, Electric Sitar, Geoffrey Winthrop. 8:11 Hawkwind, “Paranoia Part 2” from Hawkwind (1970 Liberty). Hawkwind was a pioneering space-rock and psychedelic group from the UK. They were known to use a theremin during their early years—1969 to 1973 and revived its use on stage in later performances using a Moog Etherwave model in the 2000s. This first album features a theremin added to much of the sonic textures, sometimes overtly but often run through effects to provide a looming background, as in this song. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish, but I think there is a theremin providing some of the droning background and then sporadic bursts of tones beginning around 4:25. 14:54 McKendree Spring, “God Bless the Conspiracy” from 3 (1972 Decca). Electric Violin, Viola, Theremin, Michael Dreyfuss; Electronics (Ring Modulator), Tom Oberheim; Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Dulcimer, Fran McKendree; Electric Bass, Larry Tucker; Electric Guitar, Martin Slutsky. This progressive band with experimental leanings was a quartet without a drummer. Dreyfus later said, “In God Bless the Conspiracy and No Regrets I was able to play viola and Theremin at the same time by bringing my body closer to the Theremin (to change pitch) while playing a harmony part on the viola,”(2006). He played a Theremin beginning 1969. He may have used a Moog theremin, such as the Troubadour. 6:53 Linda Cohen, “Horizon Jane” from Lake Of Light (1973 Poppy). Folky album from Philadelphia featuring several electronic musicians. Acoustic Guitar, Bass, Piano, Polytonic Modulator, Jefferson Cain; Classical Guitar, Composer, Linda Cohen; Flute, Stan Slotter; Producer, Electric Guitar, Matrix Electronic Drums, Modulator, Sitar, Synthesizer, Craig Anderton; Minimoog, Theremin, Charles Cohen. 3:36 Ronnie Montrose, “Space Station #5” from Montrose (1973 Warner Brothers). Ronnie Montrose added a custom-built Theremin to his equipment with the pitch antenna mounted on his aluminum (silver) Velano guitar so that he could play both at the same time. Volume for the theremin was controlled by a black box mounted on a mike stand, to which he stood nearby. He was recording with it throughout the 1970s. Here is a great live clip you where you can see how he played it. Note the end of the clip where he put the theremin guitar up against the speaker and wails on the volume control of the theremin control box. Bass, Bill Church; Drums, Denny Carmassi; Guitar, Theremin-Guitar, Ronnie Montrose; Vocals, Sam Hagar. 5:36 Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come, “Time Captives” from Journey (1974 Passport). Fender Bass, Percussion, Vocals, Phil Shutt; Bentley Rhythm Ace, Vocals, Arthur Brown; Electric Guitar, Vocals, Andy Dalby; Mellotron, ARP 2600, EMS VCS 3, Piano, Theremin, Percussion, Vocals, Victor Peraino. 8:37 Michael Quatro, “Get Away” from In Collaboration with The Gods (1975 United Artists Records). Brother of Detroit rockers Suzi and Patti Quatro, he had a flare for progressive rock and electronic keyboards in the 1970s. The Theremin makes frequent appearances on this album, this track in particular. Arranger, Piano Baldwin, Electric Piano Gretsch Electro, Piano Tack Piano, Sonic Six Synthesizer, Effects Univox Phaser, Univox Stringman, EC-80 Echo, Elka Electric Piano, Hammond Organ, Minimoog Synthesizer, Univox Mini-Korg, Electroharmonix Boxes, Mellotron Violin, Cello, Flute, Effects Wah-Wah Pedals, Effects Syntha-Pedal, Bass Nova Bass, Horns, Organ Pipe Organ, Sounds Ring Modulation, Maestro Theremin, Electronic Effects, Percussion , Michael Quatro;Bass, Lead Vocals, Arranged By Arranging Assistance, Dave Kiswiney; Drums, Kirk (Arthur) Trachsel; Guitar, Teddy Hale. 4:04 Melodic Energy Commission, “Revise The Scene” from Stranger In Mystery (1979 Energy Discs). This is the first album from this Canadian space-rock, psychedelic and folk troupe from British Columbia. The Theremin was a key instrument in their ensemble and was custom-built by group member George McDonald. His Theremin would eventually be known as the Galactic Stream Theremin and would take some 25 years to build and evolve into a six antennae instrument for “tuning into the performers body motions.” During this recording, a simpler, more traditional version was used. Gas & Steam Bass, Bells, Tambourine, Mark Franklin; Dulcimer, Bowed Dulcimer, Khaen, Gongs, Flute, Randy Raine-Reusch; Hydro-electric Guitar, Custom-made Theremin, Aura, Wall Of Oscillation, George McDonald; Percussion, Tablas, Brass Tank, Glockenspiel, Roland SH5 Synthesizer, Organ, Paul Franklin; EMS Synthi AKS, Delatronics, Electric Guitar, Del Dettmar; Wordy Voice, Guitar, Piano, Organ, Roland SH 1000 Synthesizer, Gongs, Vibraphone, Kalimba, Stone Drum, Egyptian Shepherd's Pipe, Xaliman. 6:13 The Nihilist Spasm Band, “Elsinore” from Vol. 2 (1979 Music gallery Editions). TVox Tour model theremin, Lydia Kavina; mixed and spatialized, Steve Puntolillo. This work was originally written for theremin although Grainger had many ideas around how this type of “free music” should be played. This native Australian was fascinated by the sounds of the real world and invented a mechanical machine for making such sounds. In 1938, Grainger said, "...Out in nature we hear all kinds of lovely and touching 'free' (non-harmonic) combinations of tones, yet we are unable to take up these beauties and expressiveness into the art of music because of our archaic notions of harmony.” His adaptation of free music for theremin was an attempt to create sounds that were new to music. This version was multitracked by Kavina and an old acquaintance of mine, sound engineer Steve Puntolillo, to recreate the parts for four theremins. 1:19 The Kurstins, “Sunshine” from Gymnopedie (2000 Rouge Records). Composer, Herb Deutsch; Piano, Nancy Deutsch; Moog Melodia Theremin, Daryl Kubian. Recording from 2012. The beloved Herb Deutsch, who died recently at age 90, was an early collaborator with Bob Moog on the creation of the synthesizer. Herb became acquainted with Bob by purchasing a Theremin kit—a Moog Melodia model, in the early 1960s. He was primarily responsible for convincing Moog to add a keyboard to his modular unit. Also, this is taken from a terrific compilation of modern Theremin artists to benefit the New York Theremin Society. Check it out. 3:38 M83, “Sitting” from M83 (2016 Lowlands Festival). This is a live recording from Holland. “Sitting” was a song on M83's first album in 2001. But it didn't have a theremin part until they decided to spice-up the live interpretation of the song in 2016. Jordan Lawlor uses a Moog Theremini when M83 performs this in concert. He puts down his guitar, grabs some drum sticks, beats a rhythm on some electronic drums while dancing in place and moving his hands around a theremin. You can hear the theremin in this track but don't mistake it for the keyboard tones that Gonzalez is playing on his modular system. A longer sequence of theremin begins at 1:38 in the audio. You can view the video here, beginning at 26:54 into the show. M83 is a French electronica band founded in 1999 by Anthony Gonzalez, who remains the only sole member from the original outfit. Performing members on this live tour included: Anthony Gonzalez, lead vocals, modular synthesizers, keyboards, guitars, piano, bass, drums, percussion, programming, arrangement, mixer, production; Loïc Maurin, drums, percussion, guitar, bass, keyboards; Jordan Lawlor, guitars, vocals, multi-instrumentalist; Kaela Sinclair, Dave Smith and M-Audio keyboards, vocals; Joe Berry, piano, synthesizers, electronic wind instrument, saxophone. 4:03 Radio Science Orchestra, “Theme from Doctor Who” (2019). This UK-based band unites theremin, ondes martenot, Moog and modular electronics, for its performances. They've played such events as the TEDSummit, the British Library, and Glastonbury Festival. They made a concert recording with Lydia Kavina in 2009 of the Theme from Doctor Who. This version was made more recently and appears to also include Kavina. She plays the TVox Tour model theremin made by her husband G. Pavlov. 2:18 Thorwald Jørgensen, Kamilla Bystrova, “Moderato” from Air électrique: Original Music For Theremin And Piano (2020 Zefir). Jørgensen is an accomplished Dutch classical theremin player. Piano, Kamilla Bystrova; Liner Notes, Design, Moog Etherwave Pro Theremin, Thorwald Jørgensen. 2:10 Dorit Chrysler, “A Happy Place” from Theremin One Hundred Years (2020 Electronic Sound). Issued with the magazine's 7” vinyl and magazine bundle Electronic Sound Magazine, issue 70. Written, produced, and performed by Dorit Chrysler. 2:06 Dorit Chrysler, “Calder Plays Theremin Side A” from Calder Plays Theremin (2023 NY Theremin Society/Fridman Gallery) Written for Theremin Orchestra in 5 Movements, Chrysler's work is based on a commissioned sound piece by The Museum of Modern Art in conjunction with the exhibition Alexander Calder: Modern from the Start. Chrysler identified two of Alexander Calder's sculptures, Snow Flurry, I (1948) and Man-Eater with Pennants (1945), to interact and “play” multiple Theremins on site. I believe the Theremin are various Moog models. Calder Plays Theremin is a co-release of the NY Theremin Society and Fridman Gallery. 8:48   Opening background tracks: Ronnie Montrose, “Open Fire” (excerpt) from Open Fire (1978 Warner Brothers). Bass, Alan Fitzgerald; Drums, Rick Shlosser; Guitar, Custom-built Theremin mpounted to his electric guitar, Ronnie Montrose; composed by Edgar Winter, Ronnie Montrose. 2:09 Hooverphonic, “‎L'Odeur Animale” from The Magnificent Tree (2000 Columbia). Guitar, Raymond Geerts; Keyboards, Bass, Programmed by Alex Callier; Vocals, Geike Arnaert; Maestro Theremin, trumpet, Youseff Yancy; Fairlight, Effects, Dan Lacksman. 3:46. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. When she appeared at The Texas Tribune Festival in late September, Liz Cheney was unequivocal: "I certainly will do whatever it takes to make sure Donald Trump isn't anywhere close to the Oval Office," she told the closing night audience. If the 45th President is nominated by the GOP, she'll leave the party, the lifelong Republican added.rnrnThough a handful of other Republican congressional representatives, including Ohio's Anthony Gonzalez, have stood apart from party leaders and GOP orthodoxy in opposing Donald Trump and the lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him, none has been more recognizable for doing so and more vocal Congresswoman Liz Cheney. A vice chair of the House January 6 Committee, and one of just two Republicans serving there, Cheney lost the recent primary in Wyoming to a Trump-endorsed attorney who has embraced election falsehoods.rnrnAs Cheney prepares for life after Congress, she will join the City Club in conversation with Judy Woodruff, Anchor at PBS NewsHour, to offer her thoughts on the state of the nation and the future of the republic.

*This episode is in partnership with Avon*In this episode I'm exploring the frustration that so many of of us with sensitive skin face when choosing our skincare. So often we long for the actives that will give us luminous, healthy skin but have to steer clear in case they worsen our sensitivity.Avon have come out with the most amazing new product that can not only help reverse sensitivity but can also give us many of the benefits of some of the most sought after actives (think retinoids) but without the pain. In short, here's a product that will work hard for us without any compromise.During the episode I speak to the brilliant Zoe Hyde who is Avon UK's skincare category manager. We have a great chat about sensitive skin and why it's so important that we should all have access to great ingredients. I also chat to Anthony Gonzalez. He's been innovating and developing products at Avon for over 20 years and we get into the nitty gritty of their Anew Sensitive Plus Dual Collagen Cream and what makes it such a game changer for sensitive skin.Later on I have a brilliant talk with Karen who is an Avon rep and Helen, her customer and friend. They both suffer with sensitivity and talk candidly about their skin and their own experience with the cream. And finally it's the turn of the Outspoken Beauty Panellists, 100 of whom have trialled Anew Sensitive Plus. We hear their no holds barred reviews. This is such a good episode with a brand that I respect for many reasons. (They support women, are innovative and often leaders in the skincare field and are accessible to us all). I loved talking through the science and innovation behind their skincare and also exploring the frustrations that so many of us with sensitive skin face.

If you're struggling with substance use now or in the past, or even if you've had a loved one who's struggled with substances, I want to make sure everyone's prepared before we dive in. If there's even a chance that this topic could trigger you, skip it, and we'll reconnect on the next episode. How effective is psychedelic therapy? Are psychedelics safe for someone with PTSD or a history of addiction? In this episode, Lana talks with Anthony Gonzalez, LCSW, about the history of psychedelic use in a clinical setting, how LSD, MDMA, and psilocybin have evolved to treat mental health issues, and the different applications for PTSD, trauma, and addiction. They also discuss how psychedelic-assisted therapy differs from indigenous ceremonial medicines, the metaphysical component, and how pop culture can contribute to stigma, cultural appropriation, and greater awareness. Turns out your need people to work and to provide, to have a thriving economy and nation. House votes to pass bill guaranteeing access to contraception https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/21/politics/contraception-access-house-vote/index.html?fbclid=IwAR2WKa07UvjlHP5qKWXPzgSm1ylUFA4JoREcolRudQTpD6e-nL7SviSLF1U The House voted Thursday to pass a bill that would guarantee access to contraception by protecting the right to buy and use contraceptives without government restriction. The final vote was 228-195. Eight Republicans crossed over to vote with Democrats. Reps. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, Nancy Mace of South Carolina, Fred Upton of Michigan, Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio, John Katko of New York, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Maria Salazar of Florida and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois joined all the Democrats in voting for the bill. Two Republicans, Reps. Bob Gibbs of Ohio and Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania, voted present, meaning they took no position either way on the bill The vote falls among action House Democrats are trying to take following the Supreme Court's decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. In that decision, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote separately in a concurring opinion that the high court should reconsider "substantive due process precedents" in decisions, including Griswold v. Connecticut, that allows access to contraception. The Right to Contraception Act, introduced by Democratic Rep. Kathy Manning of North Carolina, aims to "protect a person's ability to access contraceptives and to engage in contraception, and to protect a health care provider's ability to provide contraceptives, contraception, and information related to contraception," according to text of the bill. We should note that the text of the bill also includes “emergency contraceptives” in its list of what is included. Historically “emergency contraceptives” has also included chemicals intending to prevent or disrupt implantation of a fertilized egg. It should also be pointed out that some forms of oral contraception also include this as an intended function. Why would we trust Margaret Sanger and her descendants to give us good medicine? The mindless embrace of birth control by Christians got us into this mess. The White House said it "strongly supports" the bill in a statement Monday, adding "access to contraception is essential to ensuring all people have control over personal decisions about their own health, lives, and families." And making sure that we don’t have enough people to work productive jobs to provide for their families. This on the heels of Earlier this week, the House passed a bill that would enshrine protections for same-sex marriage into federal law, with 47 Republicans joining Democrats voting in favor of the bill. It is unclear whether the bill can pass the Senate where at least 10 Republicans are needed to side with Democrats to overcome the filibuster's 60-vote threshold. Redballoon Not so long ago, the American dream was alive and well. RedBalloon.work is a job site designed to get us back to what made American businesses successful: free speech, hard work, and having fun. If you are an employee who is being censored at work or is being forced to comply with the current zeitgeist, post your resume on RedBalloon and look for a new job. redballoon.work, the job site where free speech is still alive! www.redballoon.work New Electoral College Count Reform Proposal https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/a-promising-new-electoral-count-act-reform-proposal/ The proposal takes the form of two bills. The first is sponsored by nine Republican senators (Susan Collins, Shelley Moore Capito, Lindsey Graham, Lisa Murkowski, Rob Portman, Mitt Romney, Ben Sasse, Thom Tillis, and Todd Young) and seven Democratic senators (Joe Manchin, Ben Cardin, Chris Coons, Chris Murphy, Jeanne Shaheen, Kyrsten Sinema, and Mark Warner) and is focused on the Electoral Count Act itself. This bill clarifies that states must appoint presidential electors in accordance with the laws they each pass before election day and does away with the dangerously vague concept of a “failed election” in the original ECA. It requires that the governor of each state (or else another particular official specifically assigned this role by state law) be the person to certify the state’s slate of electors, to avoid the possibility of different officials sending different slates to Congress. It clarifies that the vice president’s role in counting electoral votes in Congress is purely ministerial and does not involve any sole decision-making authority. It raises the threshold for raising objections to a state’s electoral votes in Congress from one member of each house to one-fifth of the members of each house and narrows and clarifies the grounds for filing objections. And it allows for expedited federal judicial review of any challenges raised by a presidential candidate under already existing federal law to a state’s certification of its elections, but does not create any new right of action in federal court regarding state officials’ enforcement of state laws. Some Democrats wanted to go further, and give the federal courts more jurisdiction over the ways in which state officials enforce state election laws. This was a disastrously misguided idea, and it is very good that this proposal avoids any such path. This is a significant success for a number of Republicans who fought hard against that approach — particularly Ben Sasse and Mitt Romney. And it is the reason why I think this bill could get enough Republican votes to pass the Senate. The restraint shown in this proposal suggests this bipartisan group really wants to get these reforms enacted. The second bill, sponsored by most of the same senators as the first (with the exception of Republican senators Capito, Young, Sasse, and Graham) takes up some issues beyond the scope of the Electoral Count Act. It would increase the penalties for threatening election officials, improve the postal service’s procedures for handling mail-in ballots where those are allowed under state law, reauthorize the Election Assistance Commission, and increase the penalties for tampering with election records. These are modest reforms directed to modest problems, and the result is a bill that doesn’t do anything particularly important. If it’s necessary to get more Democrats to accept the restrained approach to ECA reform in the first bill, then I see no problem with it, and certainly some of what it proposes is worthwhile. Chaplains File Class Action Lawsuit Against DODhttps://uncoverdc.com/2022/07/21/vaccine-mandate-chaplains-file-class-action-lawsuit-against-dod/ Thirty-one military chaplains filed a class action lawsuit in May alleging the unconstitutional denial of religious accommodations relating to the vaccine mandate. The chaplains maintain they are protected by the First Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). Defendants in the case are the Department of Defense (DoD), several military branches, the Department of Health and Human Services, the FDA, and the CDC. The lawsuit provides a fulsome review of the blatant, concerning changes in definitions and procedural rules to achieve politically driven agendas and goals that seemingly ignore service members’ most basic constitutional rights. Plaintiffs argue that the vaccine mandate and the military’s “no accommodation directive” are unconstitutional. Military chaplains who fail to comply with the vaccine mandate face “threat of disciplinary action” and “punitive discharge,” violating their “express statutory rights to follow their conscience as formed by their faith.” Defendants in the case contend the “venue is not proper,” Plaintiffs’ claims “are not ripe or justiciable prior to exhaustion of military remedies” (some requests have not yet been adjudicated), and the vaccine is the best remedy for “the health and readiness” of the military forces. The 2013 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) lays out in Section 533—the right of chaplains to conduct themselves according to their conscience or religious faith. Section 533 allows a chaplain to reject performing any duty that violates their conscience without repercussion or penalty. As the footnote on page 5 of the lawsuit explains, the genesis of the 2013 NDAA amendment grew out of social policy changes in 2012 during the Obama administration concerning “the repeal of the military ban on homosexual behavior and the Supreme Court’s invalidation of the Defense of Marriage Act.” Chaplains at the time were concerned that they might have to perform wedding ceremonies that would violate their religious beliefs. Those protections were reinforced in both the 2016 and the 2018 NDAAs. Retired Army veteran Arthur A. Schulcz’s testimony filed on July 18, 2022, speaks poignantly to the difficulties of defining and implementing religious freedom policies in the military in recent years. He fought to properly define the role of chaplains in the military in December 2012, working with Congress in anticipation of amendments to the 2013 NDAA to “defend chaplains’ rights to authentically represent their faith to the military, especially in their speech.” He describes the discrimination many in the military have experienced over the years if they dared speak against the prevailing political agenda. The complaint states military chaplains are “unique military officers” because they are both commissioned officers and clergy. As such, they “raise unique statutory and constitutional religious liberty claims, in addition to the claims for systematic violations of service members’ RFRA and First Amendment rights that several courts have recently found Military Defendants likely committed.” The lawsuit states congressional authority concerning honoring and protecting military chaplains’ conscience and faith has been violated by the mandate. Chaplains are unique in their roles as service members because they are afforded additional First Amendment protections as a result of their clerical roles. It has to do with the potential violations of the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause. The Establishment Clause prohibits the government from making any law “respecting an establishment of religion.” Psalm of the Day: St. Patrick’s Breastplate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SXXz5k_F_I&list=PL1C638E88FCA83B7A&index=22 0:18-1:24 Amen! Employees who worked hard were rewarded, and employers looked for people who could do the job, not for people who had the right political views. Late last week, we got the news that Anthony Gonzalez a second-term GOP congressman from Ohio decided to not seek a third term in 2022. He gave the usual reason of wanting to spend time with his family. But in an interview with the New York Times Gonzalez gave another reason. Gonzalez was one of a small number of Republicans that voted to impeach President Trump in the wake of the January 6 insurrection. Because of his vote, he got a Trump-backed challenger in the Republican primary and his family was subjected to death threats. The departure of Gonzalez is one of a long line of Republicans that have left Congress because of Trump. Political commentator Jonah Goldberg wrote in a recent column that the retirement of Gonzalez shows there is no safe harbor for Republicans who don't bend the knee to former president Trump. It does seem that any Republican whether in Washington or in state capitols can't stay neutral when it comes to Trump. You can support Trump or suffer the consequences-there is no middle ground. What happened to Gonzalez is proof positive to many that the Republican Party is firmly in the hands of former President Donald Trump. But don't tell that to Ariel Hill-Davis. Hill-Davis is one of four co-founders of Republican Women for Progress. Started in the wake of Donald Trump's 2016 campaign and subsequent victory, Republican Women for Progress is an organization whose mission is “that Republican women deserve to speak up, not stand aside.” Hill Davis says RWFP is an attempt to “create space” for women who are interested in governing and not political theatrics. Before things get serious, Gonzalez breaks the ice with a tale of the night he and his Colts teammates “may have” parked an unnamed coach's car on the 50-yard line… loaded with packing peanuts (2:40). The podcast matures when MRob asks Anthony to outline his journey from football to the U.S. House of Representatives (4:22), and Gonzalez explains “the call to serve” that led him to the halls of Congress. How do the lessons learned in a diverse NFL locker room inform his role as a U.S. Representative? Coach Billick wants to know and asks just that (6:51), and finds out what it takes for Republicans, Democrats and Independents to work together without the assistance of game tape. Got a problem? Anthony explains how the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus gets things done (11:28). MRob asks Anthony about his decision to vote to impeach President Trump, a decision unpopular with his “team” (12:36), and Gonzalez explains that “you have to be willing to lose your job in this job” when you take an oath to uphold the Constitution. In a first for this podcast, Coach Billick tackles pork barrel spending (14:53). Then Rep, Gonzalez gives an honest account of his experience being in The Capitol Building under siege on January 6th (17:09), and how there just might be a silver lining to the event. Things lighten up when Coach reveals that Anthony once dated his daughter (19:25), and Gonzalez reveals he was just hoping it wouldn't affect his draft position. Things wrap up with talk about Anthony's old QB, Peyton Manning, and his entrance into the Hall of Fame… and what he hated to hear on 3rd downs (20:28).
