Art, motherhood & burnout: A unique journey & unifying human experience. Camille Myles is a French-Canadian multi-disciplinary contemporary artist, conservation activist and mom of 3, exploring imagery through portraiture rooted in gender roles, identity, motherhood and the environment. She creates inspiring art that tells a story linked to childhood, self-reflection and our impact on this world. From Fractured to Whole Trained classically in fine arts, archaeology and conservation she is constantly re-imagining herself and pushing her own boundaries. She pursued an engaging career as an archeologist in England, was a conservation professional in Rome and Park Superintendent of Georgian Bay Islands National Park all before committing 100% of her time and energy to her family and her art. In this jam-packed podcast episode she explores how her journey from Masters student through to the conservation of historical landscapes led her to the creation of humans, followed by a deep dive into the pit of burnout and back to her true calling; self-reflection and creative expression as a form of community building and heart-led communication. Taking 'Just a Moment' In the last few years she has created murals & large-scale public art sculptures, shared her work in art residencies and done a number of brilliant solo exhibitions. More recently she's been showcasing her powerfully moving ‘Just a Moment' social art exhibit in partnership with galleries all over the world and local mental health organizations. Inspired by her own struggle to stave off burnout and her desire to stay grounded while working full time and parenting small children through the pandemic, ‘Just a Moment' was brought to life when she invited other mothers to take ‘just a moment' for themselves in a safe place, close their eyes and take a selfie for her. Through the 100s of photos she received and short writings that accompanied each image, she created a series of powerful pieces that speak to the uniqueness of each person's journey and the shared human experience of motherhood. Comfortable being Uncomfortable What amazes me most about this conversation is the ease Camille now has with being uncomfortable. And more importantly that she has found a brilliant way to share what she has learned about burnout and creative growth by helping women everywhere to get better at being comfortable with being a messy beginner. Through her art and community partnerships she teaches that it is our willingness to trust ourselves in the (hot mess) moments of uncertainty that lead to our greatest experiences of life. Whether you consider yourself an artist, a creative or neither, whether you're a mother of children or are in the process of bringing any project, passion or creation to life, Camille's message of self-love and the power of self-reflection is for everyone. Experience her ‘Just a Moment' exhibit first hand Join me at her free community art event and family workshop on July 13th. Driven by the belief that “You must be constantly working in order to be successful” at the age of 24, while making 6 figures and living her “dream life”, my guest Danielle Paulo realized that the dream she was living was actually a nightmare. Everything that was supposed to make her happy, was in fact creating dis-ease in her body and in every area of her life! She was stuck in what felt like a no-win situation… "Stay in the successful job, no matter how unhappy I get, or leave behind everything I'd ever known in the search for freedom!” The battle between what she thought she should do and what she wanted more of in her life, raged for years… that was until the death of her mother. Immersed in grief, confusion and overwhelm, Danielle decided that she could no longer live her life through or for anyone else, and that the only person who could truly make her happy was her! She didn't ask for permission or approval. She just left everything behind. She quit her job, and said no to every toxic environment that thrived on her unhappiness. In her words… “I put work before everything, but I didn't think that was a problem until I noticed that it was affecting everything in my life. My relationship, my friendships, I wasn't seeing my family. I chose work over the people that I love. I chose work over a long term boyfriend. I chose work over going to the hospital to see my mom when she was sick. And the funny thing is, I felt like I had no choice. I felt really guilty if I wasn't working. Because I worked so hard to get where I was in my career and I felt like at any given moment, I could lose it. It wasn't until my mom passed that I was like… This can not be my life!” It took years to unravel the effects of burnout and the beliefs that led Danielle down the path to unhealthy success. And in that time, she found her freedom, launched a marketing agency that fully aligns with her values, built an all female-identified team and committed to serving her female, immigrant, POC community, by helping small business owners to live their most aligned and freedom filled lives! Danielle is an amazing young woman with a powerful and impactful vision. She's ready and excited to help women to break the glass ceilings that are holding them hostage! And I'M HERE FOR IT! She spent years living in burnout! Denise describes her years living in burnout as ‘go-go-go-colapse-repeat'. And when she finally decided to break free from this extremely unhealthy lifestyle, she realized that busy women like her needed a place where they could test out different ways to relax, practice at their own pace and feel supported through it all. What she learned about burnout She openly speaks about her journey and how she finally came to understand how the mindset and patterns that manifest after years of living inside a system that perpetuates the burnout cycle, prevent so many women from learning how to truly relax. A mindset is ultimately the framework on which you build your personal reality. And those (of us) who operated for decades with personal realities built on beliefs that link productivity directly with personal value, alongside a culture that uses shame-based tactics to keep most folk, especially women, from deep self-love and success, are left feeling stuck and unable to truly step into their power. Be inspired to break your burnout cycle. It takes courage to turn your nose up to years of conditioning about how to achieve success! And unfortunately, because of the lack of people in our lives modelling true relaxation and nervous system regulation, most of us trying to jump off the burnout wheel have some pretty warped beliefs about how quickly ‘relaxation' is supposed to happen. The reality is that to break the habit of being burnt out, to really learn how to relax, you need to be courageous enough to see the world in a whole new way! And that kind of shift requires you to embrace being a beginner, to be willing to do things imperfectly and to push beyond the need for immediate results. Burnout or Relaxation: What you practice you get good at! The Hot Mess to Awesomeness Podcast has ALWAYS been about amplifying women's voices. And about highlighting the tenacity, capacity and resilience of women. In the early days of the pandemic I felt compelled to speak with and support women, who like myself, were struggling to find their way through so much uncertainty. Over the past 2 years my mission, and reason for showing up every week, has deepened to include my need to shine a light into the dark places where so many women feel alone. The women I get to speak have, or are, facing uncertainties and unknowns involving Trauma Sovereignty Race Autonomy Anatomy Motherhood Mothering Flourishing Authentic living And how they learned to thrive through the hot mess oppressive conditioning that for generations has normalized the debasement of women. Right now, I'm shocked by whats happening in the US (re: Roe v Wade) I'm overwhelmed with emotion and reminded that in these moments when rage wants to take over, if I want to make a difference I must focus on what I can do then go and do it. I'm not famous my words won't ring out in political arenas (anytime soon) but I have a voice and today I offer it here for anyone who feels powerless against the patriarchy. My story is unique and I know shared by many. I played the role of the "good girl" for a long time. And the constant negating of ME for the good of everyone else, led to years of feeling like I wasn't … 1- Good enough 2- Worthy without giving part of myself away 3- And Powerless in almost every area of my life. I spent decades focusing on how I was failing at doing enough, pleasing enough, being worthy enough and sadly I missed out on celebrating all the ways that I am in fact fucking AWESOME! Have you felt the depths of this failure? Endured constant bad mouthing from inside your own head and are exhausted by always trying to do more? You are not alone contrary to how they want you to feel! Saying that reminds me of the scene in Harry Potter when Harry comes back from the tri-wizard tournament, Cedric is dead and no one believes him that Voldemort is back! And Luna tells Harry that she doesn't think he's crazy, and that if she was Voldemort she would want him to feel alone because... Then it would be easier to destroy him! That's what this reminds me. The socialized belief that each of us is alone, crazy! Today, aside of sharing one of the many life lessons from Harry Potter, in this episode I want to share with you the TOP 10 made up, bullshit, unrealistic “good girl” expectations I was conditioned to believe, and failed to "live up to" in hopes that it helps you to define and highlight where some of the bullshit your inner critic stays comes from! For the full transcript including the 10 Bullshit Good Girl rules, along with my strong and warranted opinion of them, check out the Hot Mess to Awesomeness blog. https://dionnethomson.com/when-anger-is-the-right-feeling/
What makes women Unique Unicorns of Awesomeness Amanda Gobatto, known to her clients and friends as a unique unicorn of awesomeness, is back for her second episode of the podcast. Since her first appearance on the podcast, in the Spring of 2020, she, like most of us, has been riding a non-stop hot mess roller coaster. And throughout this talk we unpack what has carried her through; specifically how she leaned into the idea of flourishing (over languishing) her willingness to embrace her values & why it's so important to celebrate what makes us unique. What impressed me the most is how she has been able to amplify her learning & growth, (while still in the thick of things) by sharing her flourishing skills with others! What's unique about this conversation What I absolutely loved and am so grateful for is how easily it was for Amanda to share her story and weave together the personal, professional, heartfelt and hilarious moments of her life. She has a gift for sharing her wisdom in a way that allows the listener to feel, seen, supported and captivated at the same time. The big aha moments for me came when she dove into... The power of knowing & trusting yourself The insidiousness of the imposter syndrome How deep the hot mess pit can feel & The importance of staying grounded. Her unique perspective Throughout her life (as a Manifesting-Generator for those who are interested in Human Design) Amanda has explored and flourished in a number of unique business ventures. More recently, she has been using her flourishing skills to manifest and generate an amazing community with her business Digital Girl Consulting, last month she launched her own podcast for Heartledpreneurs and through it all models how important it is to reflect and realign regularly in business and in life. She shared that by keeping her 'flashlight of awareness' of what truly matters, even when what lurked in the dark felt like it would swallow her up, she learned how to persevere, embrace her values, own her uniqueness and find the courage to step through the fire of some pretty profound experiences. Embrace what makes you unique! The glorious impact of embracing what makes you unique, comes from taking the time to “fill your cup first” but instead of going through the process of emptying and refilling, when you focus on giving only from what overflows, not what's inside the cup, you can create a state of perpetual growth and expansion. Keeping your attention on what fills you up and allowing what spills out to be taken in by those around you creates a win-win state; you stay fulfilled, they get to benefit from your high vibe state. Ultimately, if they choose to, they can learn how to do the same for themselves. What really speaks to me is the potential global impact When more of us adopt this way of viewing ourselves, (and the world around us) and shift away from the win-lose mentality perpetuated by patriarchal ideals, generations of souls can then be empowered to love their unique gifts and learn to celebrate the uniqueness of others. In doing so there is a greater chance that they'll amplify and expand into a deeper sense of authentic connections and belonging, leading to less pain, shame and suffering. Yes f#cking please! Tribe of Unique Unicorns Amanda is a brilliant woman and what I love most about this talk is how she modelled, for all us busy women, that the magic, the art, the science of flourishing is experienced when we embrace what makes us unique! She is a unique unicorn of awesomeness and her energy, passion and willingness to share what it's really like to go from hot mess to awesomeness is a beautiful reminder of what every woman is capable of! Ep. 89 Courage: saying no to something you love when it doesn't love you back What would you do if the job you loved made it impossible to take part in special family activities, like your child's first day of school? Would you have the courage to leave it? No matter how great the job is…there comes a point when you have to find the courage to question how you want to spend the precious moments of your life. The toughest decisions we make are often between the good we have and the great we could have. And it requires that we, sometimes for the first time, courageously dig deep into our values and get super clear on what really matters most. Have you noticed that the safety of some careers makes it possible to skate through a good life without having to really question why we do what we do? Many are lucky enough to embark on the “good on paper” path when we're young and some get to reap the benefits that that path offers us…And for many it takes a crisis of mind, body or spirit to expand our awareness and see that the "good life" we said yes to, has been keeping us from an absolutely GREAT one! The courage to say "I want more than good enough" My guest Elesha experienced that moment of existential crisis - courage after suffering a concussion. She spent years trying to make it all work and she realized that her good life was no longer good enough. Tired of missing out on the day-to-day joys of her family, and no longer feeling the excitement and love for her teaching life; both her and her husband decided to leave the security of their teaching careers to follow their passion for health and wellness. Saying yes can be scary & 100% worth it! Each uniquely created businesses that are flourishing due to their commitment to inspiring, empowering and educating others to step beyond the social conventions, into their most optimal lives! Her courageous Hot Mess to Awesomeness journey landed her in some deep pits of uncertainty and through it all she trusted herself enough to continue to lean into what felt right and learned that her success, and ability to embrace her awesomeness, came directly from the strong relationships she built with her family and most importantly, the courage to put herself first! Ep. 88 Erin's unique story began when she tested gene positive for Huntington's Disease in 2007. Shortly afterwards she started suffering from depression, then received more crushing news, she was infertile. Despite those diagnoses she was determined to have a family and live a joy-FULL life Now she is on a mission to positively impact other people's lives by sharing her story and speaking about genetic disease, depression, and infertility. She is the author of, All Good Things: A Memoir About Genetic Testing, Infertility and One Woman's Relentless Search for Happiness She shows it is possible to live a meaningful life even when faced with unexpected obstacles. In this conversation we covered decades of Erin's story from agony through to joy and I asked her how she found the strength to keep going and (fortunately for all of us) write her inspiring memoir… Listen and Hear Her Story in Her Words… Yes, there are parts of Erin's future that are certain and destined to be filled with pain. And by choosing to fully embrace her story, she is showing the world what it means to truly thrive. From her Hot Mess moments she has learned, and is now teaching others, how to flourish; how to choose emotions, activities and thoughts that give this one precious life we've been given infinite joy, meaning and purpose. Ep. 87 Fitting in will ALWAYS leave you feeling less-than... So why do we fight so hard to fit in? Why do we sacrifice so much of ourselves for a life filled with exhaustion, shame & self-loathing? What are we being told (sold), from a young age, that conditions us to believe that it's ok to suffer and hate ourselves as long as we are liked by everyone else? These are simple questions with deep complex answers that are rooted in the antiquated patriarchal system we find ourselves in. And they are questions that my guest Deirdre asked herself when she could no longer keep up the socially acceptable facade she had created. What her fitting in looked like... She is a successful mom of 4, Author, Speaker, Wellness Influencer, Founder of HighGate Racing (Canada's largest all female competitive cycling team) and, unbeknownst to just about everyone in her life, she was once a crack smoking hooker. We all have our own reasons for fighting so hard to fit in I know it sometimes feels like the only option and that the alternative is lonely & unfathomable. But through beautiful and powerful stories like Deirdre's we get to be reminded that ... “Shame depends on you buying into the belief that you're alone, and the bottom line is that it cannot survive being spoken.” ~ Brene Brown ~ Let Deirdre's story inspire you to find a way to speak your truth, own your story and embrace your F'N awesomeness! Annika is a former HR Manager and special needs mom, who has recovered from burnout and anxiety twice in the last 5 years. Prior to her bouts with burnout, she was a proud Type A superwoman who felt at ease with (and actually anticipated) achieving high levels of success in everything she did, school, work and life. That was until her child was born 11 weeks early and her stress addiction nearly obliterated everything (she thought) she valued. The weeks following the brith of her son, she and her husband slipped into survival mode, doing everything that needed to be done. Those months of traveling back and forth to the hospital, waiting by the phone with baited breath, worrying about every complication and relying on others to care for her son, led her down a path of guilt, shame and postpartum PTSD. The confidence she once had in her ability to handle everything was eroding. She no longer trusted her body as, in her opinion, it clearly had failed to do what it was designed to do. And as the consummate fixer of problems, she decided to “fix” herself. But when she returned to work after parental leave her Type A habits kicked back in and she doubled up on work. She needed to feel like she had control of something in her life and taking a new position allowed her to escape her life and the guilt she felt for “ruining” the lives of those she loved the most. The years that followed filled with doubt and fear, reinforcing a new belief that she would never be successful again. This undercurrent of uncertainty and insecurity began to manifest in her body with unexplained pain, confusion and lethargy. As someone who relied on knowing all the answers and making everything work, this lack of understanding sent her spiralling into despair and into the pit of burnout. After an ear infection, food poisoning and months of prolonged malaise she experienced total incapacitation. It was the final straw in her burnout journey and from there she finally began to take the steps to release herself from her stress addiction. Now years later, after working with a myriad of professionals and exploring wellness in a whole new way, she helps women as a Sleep and Health Coach so they too can avoid burnout by getting their energy and sleep back. Ep. 85 Helen Pearman Ziral (PhD), Professor of Humanities & Social Sciences is a human relations communication specialist, facilitator, wellness coach and interventionist who for over 20 years has been conducting workshops focused on intrapersonal strength and transformation. Dr. Helen Z's focuses primarily on the convergence of spirituality and intergenerational spirit injury along the matrilineal line and is currently a full-time college professor sharing her wisdom with the next generation. In this episode, Helen and I dive into how she broke free from the norms and beliefs long held by the world of academia and unearthed the importance of magnifying the impact of healing generational wounds. We discuss the amazing work she does now and how her decision to get her PhD, and the illness that precluded her doctoral education, impacted her life path. In the weeks leading up to her first days at OISE as a PhD student, she found herself excited to explore the intersection of the work she had done in her 2 different Master degrees and noticed a simultaneous uneasiness in her body. And although pulling together her previous work was a clever way to maximize hers years as a post-grad student, it was in fact not the biggest challenge the universe had planned for her. In the first month of her PhD journey, she was inexplicable afflicted with what is now known as fibromyalgia. And as a result needed to drastically modify her educational path. She was unable to make the arduous trip to school every day and enlisted the support of other students so that she could stay home and heal. At home “twiddling her thumbs”, she decided that if she couldn't attend school, she would use her time to research her physical affliction. Her research unearthed some fascinating phenomena and along with her own experience with a number of (male) doctors, she uncovered that many of the people suffering from this painful disorder were women. Most interestingly, she believed that as a result of longstanding systemic patriarchal (and racist) history of discounting the experience and validity of women, most of those afflicted were not taken seriously; she personally was led to believe that “it was all in her head”. As a highly educated, passionate and no-nonsense women, she knew that the non-action opinions offered to her by western medicine professionals was not the end of the road. She had a deep sense that what she was experiencing was not “just in her head” that it was in fact a problem that was anchored in something that went beyond mind and body! Learn about her unique journey, a simultaneous unpacking of fibromyalgia, the world of academia and the shared history of all women, and how it led to her true calling, the unveiling and exploration of intergenerational spirit injury intervention! Tap into your own knowing and explore your intersectionality…where your perception and therefore experience of this one life you've been offered is impacted by what came before you and what you believe now. Listen and embody the power of Sankofa, a power that Helen believes in, practices and teaches to others. SANKOFA (“san” – return “ko” – go back and “fa” – take). A term derived from a proverb from the Akan people of West Africa meaning “go back and take”. The sankofa is a mythical bird that flies forward while looking backward with a golden egg (symbolizing the future and rebirth) between its beak. And when used in transformational work it embodies a powerful universal truth that by fetching the wisdom of our cultural past and living it in the present, we can all create a more prosperous future for all our children to thrive in. Ep. 84: The day before we recorded this episode Heather sent me this… “I had an epiphany yesterday, which I am sure will come up tomorrow. Just to share briefly, I am feeling raw and vulnerable lately, so I think doing this with you tomorrow will be wonderful and healing. There is SO much happening energetically, and many people I've spoken to are feeling many emotions and heaviness. While laying in bed last night, after spending most of the day crying, I thought to myself "am I having a break-down?" And then in my head I heard "You are breaking open." And that right there - was so powerful and resonated in my whole being. The whole concept of breaking open - super uncomfortable while in the thick of it! But trusting the process and knowing things will become clearer on the other side of it. Anyhoo - I just needed to share that!” I read it and allowed her thoughts and energy to sink in. I too had been feeling a massive energy shift within myself and those around me. And then, what happened when we met the next day, was practically magical! The moment we started the pre-recording dance party something, that I call a shared energetic experience, began to unfold. Beyond words, Heather and I were aligned in a way that I believe in and can not fully explain. When you listen, if you're willing, feel into the experience, tap into your own knowing and tune in to the energy of Heather's story. A glimpse at what she shared… Heather is now an empath on a mission to help other souls to break free from the many preconceived limitations, (set either by ourselves or societal pressures) so that we can live as authentically as possible. And before her breakthrough moment, like so many women, she didn't know how to truly listen to herself and trust herself enough to take action that was FOR her. She was in pain, living a life riddled with shame, hair loss and dis-ease! Not until experiencing the quiet of nature with souls who truly saw her, did she finally figure out that listening to her intuition was the only way she would survive. If you're open to moving beyond words, willing to listen with your body and do what Heather has done (and now teaches others to do); allow yourself to breathe into her words and find yourself as she shares her soul-journey experience. Walk with her through what it was like to release what no longer served her, and perhaps you too can make room for what matters most! Ep. 83 Growing up, Hollie (like so many of us) constantly heard the message that she needed to be thinner, smarter, faster, prettier. She heard it from the media, family, school, friends. As a result she became obsessed with how she looked, what she ate, how much she exercised and so much more. To adapt to this backwards and unhealthy cultural norm, she adopted an “all or nothing” mindset; if she couldn't do something perfectly (eat, exercise, wear make up), then she wouldn't do it at all. And this lose-lose lifestyle left her feeling like a failure no matter what she did. The end result was that she didn't know how to listen to herself, she didn't understand what she needed or how important an aligned and holistic mindset is when building habits like good nutrition and essential movement. Everything began to change when she was diagnosed with PCOS (Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) and told that her ‘dysfunctional body' would never be able to bring children into the world naturally. After riding a roller coaster of emotions and running through every thought possible, she knew that "there had to be a better way.” And she knew that the “better way” needed to start with listening to and learning to love her body. For years did the best she could, naturally conceived 2 beautiful children and built a life she thought was perfect. It wasn't until being “surprised” with a third child did she begin to commit to building the bio-unique lifestyle that her body, mind and soul needed. And now through her work as an educator, coach, mentor and guide she supports a flourishing community of women as they uncover their bio-unique lifestyle, create their own solid mind-body connection and learn how to enjoy a full happy life. Ep. 82 Over 13 years ago my guest Pamela, like many young people, went looking for a career that was fun, engaging and would match her fast paced and full life. She believed that becoming a fitness instructor would be the perfect fit! After taking the required weekend certification, she jumped into her new career. Very quickly she realized that the training she received was not nearly enough to support the people that truly needed her. In those early days she felt ill-prepared and she lacked the core knowledge required to teach more than just how to do the perfect squat! Her desire to help others, along with a deep passion for how things work, led her to follow her fascinations about the human body. Her education and habit of going all in, led her on a winding path through the underbelly of the competitive fitness world, through years of deep personal transformation, all the way to being the wellness leader she is today! Through it all she uncovered more about herself than she ever thought possible. She was able to shed the identities that had been holding her back and figure out exactly what it would take for her to truly feel and be whole. Now, committed to helping people enjoy all the activities they love with a strong healthy body, mind and spirit, she delivers the tools people need to connect to a ‘love of self' through mindfulness and movement. Ep. 81 When Elena was 17 she came to the stark and life altering realization that if a boyfriend could dump her, then the world could just as quickly leave her behind. In that moment she vowed to accumulate everything she would need to protect herself, degrees, people, accolades, the right house, the right hair and the right husband, but a trip back to her family home ripped that shouldy mask off and revealed to her that the life she had been living wasn't REAL. REAL, to Elena, means coming to terms with our own story and facing all of it, not just the stuff we like or is “comfortable”. It's about embracing all that we are the good, the bad ,the ugly, the beautiful and the magical. And her message to you is… “The hot mess moments aren't to be discounted, they are to be accepted and valued as part of your journey, as an integral part of your story. Ep. 80: Chloe Jean (CJ) struggled with what she thought she was giving up when she dove head first off the corporate ladder…for months it was messy and she was miserable. She quit because she couldn't live one more moment feeling stuck and alone. And although she felt empowered by her decision, she had no idea where she was headed. It was not until she found a way to let go of the turmoil and pain, was she able to drop in and trust the experience fully. Looking back now, she can see exactly why she had to go through every ounce of angst…she can see how every hot mess moment led to a deeper awareness of who she really was (and wanted to be), immense growth and ultimately her calling as a Soul Therapist. Early on in her life as a leader in the corporate world, she had developed a strong people-pleasing muscle…founded in fear of confrontation and being truly seen. Then, with the support of one of her many guides, she woke up to the fact that what she had been habitually taking “personally”, what was in fact none of her concern! Ep. 79 Knowing she was a born entrepreneur meant to blaze a trail, my guest Kerry took to the stage to share her message! While finding and fumbling her way through the speaking world, she realized how complicated and convoluted that industry can be. And even though she struggled, she trusted that her intense drive to succeed and the clarity of her message, would get her where she wanted to go. She ran into some deep ruts and obstacles, which she took as a sign that she was meant to dig in deeper. And after mastering the steps it takes to be seen, heard and valued as a speaker, she turned to help others climbing the speaking ladder to help them make sense of the complexity of the speaking world. Kerry's story takes some interesting twists and turns and through it all she learned how to appreciate herself, her struggles and most importantly that every message, big or small, matters! Ep. 78 My guest Brooke White, of Kalidescope Art & Energy, first discovered her connection with spirit and her true self after a devastating experience. Her path from Hot Mess to Awesomeness had many ups and downs through relationships and beyond what she had long been conditioned to believe was the norm. Following her head injuries and the realization of her business Kalidescope (her spirit self), she noticed that she could feel the vibration of rocks and crystals with intensity. This connection to energy and vibrational healing led her to the realization that healing is not about fixing. True healing is about choosing love even amidst feelings of fear and being reminded that you are already whole, brilliant and perfect exactly as you are. Now as an intuitive, sensitive and knowledgeable in energy and humans. She inspires, empowers and supports humans to release what no longer serves their best interest through art, energy healing and embodiment practices. “You are worthy and when you choose to embark on your own healing journey, you can live a reality that reflects your heart's desire.” Connect with Brooke www.kalidescope.org/releaseperfectionsim www.kalidescope.org Brooke's Dance Party Tunes: 1 - Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson ft. Ep. 77 Meg taught for 15 years, and as a teacher, she traveled with her husband and young son exploring all the world had to offer. When her mother was diagnosed with brain cancer she came home to care for her and stepped into a life she didn't recognize. She committed every waking minute that she wasn't at work to supporting her mother. And the only word she could use to describe that time was misery. When her mother passed and the time came for her to re-engage with her life and her family, she hoped that the misery she had been feeling would fall away as she processed her grief. And sadly that was not the case. She quickly realized that her teaching career no longer offered her the wonder and marvel she'd experienced during her travels. And after months of struggling with what she wanted to do and more importantly with who she was, she found the courage to explore her photography career and asked her boss for a leave. He said no. And on that very same day her 6 year old son Fynn perished in a freak accident. She never returned to work and from that moment on her life would never be the same. Ep. 76 Rose is an abduction survivor, now a coach, guide and goddess mentor dedicated to helping women discover their own inner light. Ascending from trauma, Rose has tapped into her deepest resiliency and positivity to become a much-needed maternal presence for the women of the world. Through her experiences and her unique ability to support others, Rose has created a prosperous future for herself and her six children. In this amazing and beautiful conversation, my guest Rose unveils for us the moment she realized that she had spent years trapped inside a captivity mindset. And she walks us through how she was able to open herself up to a life of healing and growth. In the years following her abduction, Rose managed to create a safe (small) life for herself and her children. In that time, she faced and managed to overcome a myriad of almost insurmountable obstacles (tune into Ep. 53 to hear about the specifics of her journey) and it wasn't until September 11th, 2001 that she realized that the safe world she had worked so hard to create was no longer going to be enough to get her through the guaranteed uncertainty of the future. Amidst the absolute chaos of 9-11 while working in the media industry, she struggled with her responsibilities to her children (who were safe) and the public she served through her work. During that time she realized that the comfort zone she had come to rely on was no longer serving her. Going home after that day, which felt like a lifetime, she realized that for years she was still living as a captive … and that her only option now was to break out of her comfort zone and grow! Ep. 75 5 years ago, standing in her kitchen, my guest Natasha heard herself say out loud...I HATE MYSELF! She struggled for decades to fit in, believing she didn't belong anywhere and that there was something inherently wrong with her. As she grew older, she slowly started to realize that her individuality was a strength. However, it took time and a number of almost unimaginable and painful experiences before she could fully embrace and take full responsibility for her life, and ultimately for her happiness. Natasha realized, in that powerful moment in the kitchen, that she just didn't have time to heal..and because she was holding on to so much pain, her anger would erupt like a volcano. Looking into the faces of her children, she knew that this pattern, which had never really served her, would ultimately hurt them. Throughout her healing journey she uncovered a deep strength, a knowing of her worth and now she absolutely loves herself! Her path took many ups and downs and through her podcast and coaching she shares her learning experiences with other open hearted parents who are looking to heal their wounds so that her children won't have to. Natasha's story really hits home for me as someone who long believed I didn't belong anywhere! If you've struggled for too long feeling like you don't fit in, take the time to listen, lean in and be reminded that you matter. You're not alone my friend!! Ep. 74 When I met Diane I was truly inspired by her joie de vivre and passion for supporting local organizations. When I learned that she spent almost 5 decades as an IT professional, I was curious about her story and experience growing up in a male dominated profession. We booked some time to chat about the idea of her being a guest, (which I happened to record) and it took only a few minutes to realize that what I was recording was gold! Yes, it's a bit different from my other episodes … a testament to the importance of adaptability! Diane is a retired IT Director with 50 years of programming experience. She studied Computer Science and despite being only 1 of a handful of women in her class, integrated well into the male dominated world of information technology. Diane shares that despite being one of the only women, she did not feel uncomfortable or out of place in her profession. And she chalks that up to having a father in the Air Force. Due to his occupation, Diane recalls moving often, which she believes made her extremely adaptable. The skills she learned from her childhood served her in the world of Computer Science. She was able to adapt and make her own mark. “What we believe of ourselves can dictate how we move in the world”. Since her retirement she has volunteered for the hospital amongst other health organizations and more recently has dedicated herself to volunteering for a local charity children's orchestra, the Sistema Huronia Music Academy. This organization equips children from grades 3 to 8 with a musical instrument and teaches them how to play...for FREE! Diane is happy to have been able to use her IT expertise to help out Sistema since the world went “online” in March of 2020. The way she was able to “adapt” to the new norms and connect students and teachers via Zoom is inspiring and helped to ensure that the kids had everything they needed to stay connected to the music they love . Ep. 73 A show full of movie references and amazing analogies all about the containers you outgrow in your life. Rassy and I discuss the hot mess life and how you never really get rid of the hot mess, you just rearrange it and that the goal is to find the awesomeness in the hot mess. “Stuff grows better when you put shit on it right?!? Focus on being the seed and grow out of the shit... continue to grow and when you start to feel that tightness, find a new container. When you're too much for the container you are in...get a bigger one.” Her entire life she grew up thinking something was wrong. Her awakening came when people she cared about pushed her away and she knew she was the only one who could do anything about the state of her life. Rassy shared that she completely fell apart, lost her shit. She embraced her hot mess. She recalls thinking…”Just let yourself fall apart, it's ok. Sometimes you have to burn everything down to the foundation and start all over again. Then you move into a bigger unfurnished place, a fixer upper. Had a studio with a doorman and now you move into a farmhouse and you can do whatever you want to do with it. It's yours and it gives space to spread everything you have. You get to build it.” Another awesome analogy! Sometimes we fail to remember where our thoughts and ways of living come from. Why do we like the things we do? Have you ever found yourself at the grocery store buying things you are so used to buying but want to try a different thing and feel resistance to change? Why exactly is it so hard for you to buy the different granola bars? Is it because it's tradition and you've had your parents buy that kind and therefore you think it's the only kind you should buy? Another amazing analogy! We discuss where that idea comes from and how we felt when we “figured it out”. Ultimately, Rassy reminds us to fill our cup not because we have to fill everyone else's but because we need to be filled always. If there is any spilling out and someone wants to have some, that's fine too, but we do not need to worry about anyone else's cup, only our own! (mind blown...analogy) This show is full of laughs and amazing conversation that taps your brain and heart in all the right places! You will walk away with a smile on your face and a new way of seeing your life; from family, to friends, alone, and with company. Ep. 72 A very unique story that inspires and reminds us to follow our heart and ultimately do what makes us happy. Cyreks was a new mom just a few credits shy of graduating high school and was able to finish literally with her twins in her arms. Although proud of her accomplishment she chose to postpone post-secondary adventures to stay home with her 2 littles until they went to school. After years at home and the routine of mom-life beginning to weigh on her, she started to brainstorm all the ways she could reconnect with the working world. She quickly realized she had a knack for welding. She took an introduction to welding course in college and took on different positions to gain experience. Although she was gaining experience she was reminded often that she was in a male dominated trade that was not fond of her being there. She was well aware that she was not easily accepted but she worked hard and did it for many reasons including becoming a single mom when she and her husband divorced. Through many ups and downs, being laid off, starting her own business and finding a way to incorporate art and creative welding into her repertoire, she consistently stayed true to herself...building a legacy she loved and one her children can be proud of! 10 years later, she is living her life to the fullest and having a ton of fun. Her welding biz is open from May to October and in 2020 she was able to build another income stream for her family through live-stream gaming! More recently she has started to create merchandise for other streamers and created an additional financial stream by combining all of her creative skills. No matter what the endeavor, she follows her own simple advice “If you think it's gonna make you happy, just do it!” Cyreks is a real life inspiration and reminds us that not everyone's path is the same but the goal is, be fuckin' happy! Now they're creating the lives they knew they were meant to live and sharing all they've learned with brave women all over the world. Sash + Ash are independently brilliant and together they are a force! In this episode they share their powerful stories of chaotic living, addiction and incarceration. More importantly they walk us through how they learned that although we are not in control of the “stuff” around us we are always in control of how we respond. When asked how after years of spiralling out of control they learned to respond to their chaotic and build their business, Born Legacy, they shared this powerful message... “You have to realize that where you are is not right, believe in your goal and want it so badly that you are willing to change everything to get it .! Sometimes that means isolating yourself, learning to listen to your heart and seeking out people that believe in you! When you put YOU 1st, you start to recognize the energy you are taking on from others and what it takes to keep yourself from getting stuck on their chaotic path. There's no perfect way of living. Life is about learning to thrive through the hot mess so you can truly embrace the glorious life you have. We are human “beings” not human “doings” which means that we are always able to grow and evolve.” The energy these brilliant women emanate is contagious and the path they've chosen to walk will undoubtedly be a bright light for generations to come! Ep. 70 How are you able to be sensual if you have no idea what your body feels like, looks like, what it can do or what feels good? Have you taken the time to learn about your sexual pleasures? Is it a conversation you are too embarrassed to have? When is it ok to talk about our bodies and what turns us on? In this episode Sheila and I talk about sensuality and self love. Sheila opens up about her relationship with sensuality or lack thereof. Growing up in a religious family and not being able to question what sex was about or understand her own body. Even out of her family home, living alone, she still felt she had to hide her questions and curiosity about sexuality and sexual education. As she got older she realized that in order to connect to her true sensual being she had a lot of self discovery work to do. She quickly learned that it's not an all at once journey. Nobody has their shit together right out of the gate. Lack of connection with people willing to talk about it made everything harder and the internal battle, between her higher mind saying, “It's ok to look at your body” and her inner critic yelling, “No this is bad!” She found that the only solace was in opening up her protective doors and seeking out people who understand. Sheila reached a pivotal point in her life where she realized her body was longing for physical connection and yet her mind and religion would not allow the two to be something that could work together. She realized through trial and error that her personal enjoyment had to be discovered so she could be free. She was completely disconnected from her body and felt like pleasuring it was an out of body experience. It took time to learn how to be intimate and learn what she liked sexually and her husband was a patient partner, learning and discovering with her. Her happiness does not lie in the hands of her husband, on the contrary she is in control of what she enjoys and he gets to learn how to satisfy her and himself in unison. Her message to all women is that “Confidence is magnetic, when you have confidence in yourself and your body, it allows your partner to allow themselves to be free to be happy and it will be amazing.” Learn more and connect with Sheila https://www.facebook.com/sheila.adels Sheila's Dance Party Tunes: RuPaul-Sissy that Walk Kelly Clarkson-Broken and Beautiful Shakira-Try Everything Are you feeling like a Hot Mess…Not sure where to begin? Ep. 69 In this mind blowing episode, my wonderful guest Janna and I discuss the world of emotions and pain. Now you all know that I love to geek out on a good science talk, and when I get to mix it with understanding emotions and how it all manifests into a physical form, that's the stuff that makes my brain smile! Janna shares her story and how she started to understand the evolution of her chronic pain and more importantly who she had become as a result of it. At the age of 19 Janna was in 2 major car accidents within weeks of each other. Those accidents resulted in 4 months of time away from work and deep rehabilitation. Although she did return to her regular life, 18 months later while experiencing a painful break up, she woke up with horrific and immobilizing pain in her neck and back. The emotional turbulence created by the demise of her relationship with the person she thought she was going to marry coupled with the trauma of her past and the injuries sustained in the accident, she began to remember childhood traumas she had suppressed. The residue of the suppressed emotions resulted in physiological pain she didn't understand and for a very long time she was unable to gain relief. “I had days that were terrible and days that were less terrible. I could barely function. It was not the life I wanted to live. That's what started my quest to find out why I was in pain.” Her journey to understand who she was began when she realized that the years of physical pain she had endured was correlated directly with emotional reactions to past experiences. She learned that emotions are navigational tools that most people refrain from using because talking about our emotions has been viewed as inappropriate in society, we don't see it being modelled and we often don't have people around to teach us how. In this awesome episode I chat with my new friend Stephanie Calahan. She shares a story, a narrative, that you may have heard before. It goes like this — A young and successful consultant at a Fortune 500 company, moved up quickly in the ranks and had 300 people that reported to her by her late 20's. She loved her job but something changed — the company went public. The work environment became toxic and she was asked to do things that, in her opinion, were borderline unethical and didn't align with her values. Then while on her way home from recruiting some University students on her day off — yup, she was working on her day off — feeling guilty about making job offers she no longer believed in, she decided to quit. She ran the idea past her husband, who agreed that it was the RIGHT decision. And within 3 months, she and her husband both quit their corporate jobs, sold their house, and moved cities with their toddler in tow. It was perfect...or so she thought. Stephanie left her job, but she didn't recover from her workaholic tendencies; perfectionism, people pleasing, and lack of self worth. She had equated her value, her worth, to her busyness. She believed that everything had to be hard or it wasn't worth talking about. — Are you screaming, “that's me too!”? - Eventually, this negative narrative caused serious, life threatening, health issues. And she was forced to stop everything. A lot has happened since then, and now, she has a life filled with ease, joy and success. Working with service-driven entrepreneurs, visionaries, and all sorts of remarkable professionals who are experts in their field, she gets to help them get out of their own way and build highly profitable businesses and extraordinary lives filled with impact and meaning. A BIG takeaway from all that Stephanie shared is a quick question she encourages all her clients to ask themselves when they feel stuck. One simple question that can help you to get creative and find an alternate solution to any problem you're facing. A question that led her clients to give her the super-hero moniker, “The Problem Destroyer”! “What's the fastest, simplest, easiest, pain-free, and fun way to achieve ____________ (fill in the blank)?“ Tune in, catch all of Stephanie's awesome stories, and align yourself with her pivotal message...Give yourself permission to find ease and joy in ALL that you do! Ep. 67 This episode brings the podcast full circle, Roxanne and I recorded Episode 11 together, give or take a year ago. And now, in this episode, we quickly revisit what was happening then, at the beginning of “the great pause” as Roxanne calls it (COVID), the shifts she chose (and the ones she didn't), and how learning about her Human Design impacted her life. Specifically, we dove into why and how Roxanne came to learn about Human Design and the important lessons we can all learn and apply to our lives... like, my fav, when we understand ourselves, we are better at connecting with other people. If you're a fan of this podcast, there is a big moment that will really resonate with you. When you're stuck in the busy woman cycle, i.e. getting caught up in getting shit done, you lose sight of when you need time to yourself...Time that makes it possible to feel useful and be in flow. Roxanne learned this lesson, and by embracing her Human Design, she found it easy to carve out the time she needed to rest, resulting in a greater sense of “productivity”. Reminder: Busy is not always productive. You may be caught on a hamster wheel, so take a second to be still. Roxanne shares a moment when she realized that her parenting looked a lot like conditioning her child to be like her...in her moment of clarity she found that the energy she was using to “fix” her child to be like her, was not serving either of them — hence Human Design. Her biggest takeaway from her experience and one that really hit home… “We are all different. What is right for you may be different for someone else. You can't spend the rest of your life trying to get people to be or think like you… what you can do is learn to listen and then you will be more compassionate.” A big change for Roxanne came when she finally took a huge step out of her comfort zone to pursue the endeavour her heart yearned for. After some time, and trepidation, she took a small leap towards really getting to know herself and she has learned to listen to, and with, her heart. She shares her experience of learning to be open to believing what people were saying to her about her. She realized that not everyone is blowing smoke...she also learned to entertain the idea that others CAN see our greatness, and that with time, and the right map, we can learn to see it too! This episode will hook you and give you a different perspective, something to look forward to, and the tools to get started. Ep. 66 This episode begins with a fantastic discussion about the process of social change movements with my extraordinary guest, Shannon Thompson. Bonus: Check out the quick 3 minute TED Talk describing what Shannon calls the power of the first follower “How to Start A Movement - Derek Sivers” https://www.ted.com/talks/derek_sivers_how_to_start_a_movement Shannon and I dive deep into the world of independence versus interdependence. A world where women are told to walk on their own and be strong and to work hard to be their own person, Shannon sheds light on what that looks like from her vantage point as a recovering addict and global movement leader. Being a strong independent woman can be lonely and what we need most is interdependence. Shannon is the visionary of Shakti Rising, which I asked her to define for us. Her response: "Shakti is a grassroots social change organization transforming the lives of women and children and the larger community by cultivating leadership skills, financial, economical and ecological resilience and family wellness through a holistic feminine model”. That definition speaks volumes and she goes on to explain why we need to lean in and learn more. In this episode, Shannon walks us through a powerful personal story from her past, that she rarely shares, and highlights the true essence of what it means to go from Hot Mess to Awesomeness. You will be enthralled and uplifted, inspired, and amazed with what she shares with us. Get ready to be interdependently bold! Ep. 65 This episode is packed with empowering messages! I had an amazing time chatting with Kim, and you will love what she has to share with you. Kim and I discussed her journey through childhood into adulthood and what it was like when her perspective shifted from, who she believed she should be, to the woman she is today. The moment that Kim went from being a chameleon, a wallflower who always blended into her surroundings, to feeling confident, strong, and powerful, she knew she wanted to teach her daughters all that she'd learned! And in that moment, she realized that for them to feel truly empowered, she would need to be the woman she envisioned they would be. Kim explains how her podcast, “What Led Her Here” is influenced by her experiences with being vulnerable and how her guest's raw and real stories continue to influence her. She offers a safe space for women to be heard and share their experiences. Her listeners trust in her ability to create and hold space for them, and her guests know they are in good hands. When her guest's struggle with what story to share, her response is always, “allow the one that bubbles up first to take shape, give it space to grow”. She knows that our power comes from our willingness to be truly seen and heard. Kim leaves us with some incredible words to keep in our hearts and minds, “if it's scary and uncomfortable, you're on the right path”. She reminds us that our wisdom is worth sharing and that true empowerment comes from our Voice + Vulnerability! Ep. 64 Today I am excited to be speaking with a Wizard. Frances shares her story from womb to present day. She walks us through the milestones in her journey and how she came to the realization that she is a Wizard. As a child, Frances grew up very close to her mother and was “always in her way”. She longed for attention and felt disconnected from her family members. As Frances got older, she noticed many unhealthy personality traits she shared with her mom, and wanted to change her ways. Through years of self reflection and Yoga practice coupled with breath work, Frances finally achieved the change she had been searching for. Did you know that your body remembers old pains and traumas? Frances explains how the mind and the body feed off of each other, causing us to feel certain things that our mind hasn't dealt with yet. She explains that in order for you to change your habits, your mind and body have to be on the same page. The cycle of change can not be completed unless both are aligned. She explains what being a Wizard really means... “Wizardry is our ability to see things clearly- our beliefs, and our feelings. The beliefs are in our head, and the feelings are in the body. If we can observe the body and the messages it triggers in the mind, we have self-awareness, and eventually even self-control. The key message is that to heal, tuning into the subtle information in the body is essential- it can't be done with just thinking. Wizards use the magic of their thoughts to change their experience of the world!” Tune into this exciting and informative episode, you'll be happy you did! Ep. 62 Courtney is a certified life and leadership coach and an award-winning speaker. She is passionate about helping women create lives that they are excited about. One of her super powers is getting people to do things they never thought possible through the power of PLAY and FUN. Through many of the challenges of 2020 I channeled Courtney's superpower and stepped way out of my comfort zone! Her passion for life has created a HUGE ripple effect! During our conversation I learned that things didn't start out that way. In 2009 Courtney had a one-year-old in daycare, she had just moved into a new house, and she had just gotten a new job. To say that the learning curve was steep was an understatement, but like so many new moms, she really felt like she could (and should be able to) handle it! After a few months into her new job, her world got rocked in a way that she could never have anticipated…she learned that her mom had terminal cancer. Her grief, (and her children) changed her perspective on life. No longer feeling obligated to do anything, Courtney decided to follow her fascinations. She went back to school for psychology and trained as a coach. Then, after years of learning and processing her own experiences, she finally said yes to the one training that would change her life forever…She enrolled in Circus School! The best part about that decision is that she didn't have to do it alone. Over the years of searching and rediscovering real joy in her life, she built, and surrounded herself with, a community of Kick-Ass ladies. From that moment on she made a commitment to continue her wild FUN adventures with the Kick-Ass Ladies, knowing that by challenging herself, and others, to experience more fun, she could overcome any obstacle! It's been 7 years and every month she invites more women into her world where PLAY + JOY take centerstage. Ep. 61 She was poor, outlawed and scared because of the gardens of ‘medicine' her family grew. Her parents, both artists, chose to live a simple ‘hippy-homestead' life on a mountainside. Living close to and with nature, their home featured outdoor plumbing and limited electricity and made it so that getting to school every day was a serious chore; traveling 2 hours one way! It was during those daily trips that she learned to daydream and write many stories in her head. She loved to write, but her desire to break away from the ‘starving artist' lifestyle took writing off the table. She made her way to college, found love and with a generous gift was able to purchase a home that had everything she thought she wanted. In her search for a life that combined the beauty and uniqueness of her childhood with the ‘Leave it to Beaver' life she craved, she took her degree in child studies and embarked on a teaching career with the Waldorf schools. Her work inspired her to explore the power of faery tales and reignited her passion for storytelling. Feeling guided by her intuition, while on vacation in 2011, she sat down and allowed her first Celtic tale novel to pour out. Ep. 60 Mary Lou envisioned living a life different from the chaotic “normal” that had been set by her family. Unpredictable behaviour, silence, secrets, addiction, tragedy, and trauma; she yearned for a life where she felt calm, peaceful, worthy, relaxed, in tune with her breath, and ultimately felt a sense of belonging. In an effort to feel safe and whole, Mary Lou internalized perfectionism and people pleasing, believing her worth was determined on her ability to fix problems and create happiness for her family. She was her family's sponge, absorbing all that was hard and challenging; all because of the belief that families are where our first loyalties should be held to. It was the desire to be accepted by her family that almost ended her life. Not knowing what it was to have boundaries, Mary Lou suffered from strained relationships, disordered eating patterns, severe panic attacks, debilitating anxiety. She was 5'9 and 98 pounds; burnt out and had a breakdown. On the brink of giving up, she knew she needed to show up for her children and deserved to show up for herself. Hanging up her titles of “Fixer” and “Perfectionist”, replacing them proudly with her new titles of “Cycle Breaker” and “Outcast”. Through the creation of boundaries, new habits, radical acceptance, and finding solace in the female community Mary Lou chose herself. Together in this week's episode, Mary Lou and I reflect on how not being “in charge” of everyone else's responsibilities releases us from anger and resentment, welcoming freedom into our lives. Ep. 59 We can all agree that we take physical and personality traits from our parents; whether it's your mother's eyes or your dad's sense of humour, these traits become a part of how we initially identify ourselves. Some of these traits we carry with pride and others we tend to push away as we figure out how we want to create our own sense of self. Jen felt sure of her identity, until her Dad passed away at the age of 49 when she was just 19. Suddenly she felt lost and without realizing it, began her journey of generational healing. Fast forward to Jen at 27, she had made enough wrong “next steps” and was ready to make the right one having her own “Eat,Pray,Love” moment she set off to live in India and Nepal for 3 1⁄2 years to break free from the familiar patterns and to find her spark and sense of purpose. After shedding judgments and allowing herself to embrace her healing, Jen was resisting the call she knew lied at home, determined to stay with her current comforts her body had other plans in mind. Ep. 57 For over 23 years my guest Pamela did not feel she had a voice. After having experienced severe childhood trauma and sexual abuse from the age of 10 to 14, she went deep within herself, never knowing who to trust or believing she would ever be ok again. At the time of her abuse and during the early years of her recovery, the world was a very different place and the technology to easily connect with resources and support was not available. Those suffering from mental health issues felt very isolated and alone. Pamela bottled up her emotions, pushed them down where no one would see them and believed that the only way to live her life was under a heavy armour. After many years of building up the courage to step out of the shadows cast by her pain, Pamela felt a deep urge to share her story. She knew that 1 in 4 people are affected by childhood sexual abuse and she felt drawn to use her voice to help others to find their own. She started with one very real and raw post on Facebook. Most of her family had no idea of the pain she had endured as a child. And with her brave act came many conversations, loss of relationships and more importantly a flood of support! Now through her blog and podcast, Find Your Voice, Pamela is helping thousands of people to break through their armour and unlock the next chapter of their story! Ep. 56 After owning a martial arts school for more than 25 years, Michelle found the courage to let go of who she believed she was and uncovered the true power of aligning with her ‘knowing'! With covid as the impetus, she took a hard look at who she had become and realized that she had spent her life putting everyone else' needs before her own. More importantly she learned that letting go of her business, her life and the only Self she had ever known, was the absolute right thing to do! It took over a year of feeling like she was letting people down when she asserted her power, deep self-reflection and practicing tuning in, to prioritize putting herself first and love herself again. Now as a heart-led entrepreneur Michelle guides and supports women to tune in and listen to their ‘knowing voice within'. Ep. 55 In this Special Episode my Life Coach + bestie Leanne Quesnelle is back to interview ME! I was the quintessential good girl. I lived my checklist life dutifully doing what a good girl does. I selflessly took care of people's need and did what was asked of me…all in hopes to be seen as an accepted and valuable member of the group. Then one day, a year after the birth of my 1st child, I lost it. I could no longer handle the feeling that I was failing at being myself, failing at being the good girl I was supposed to be. I could no longer manage my anxiety (which I'd been ignoring my entire life) and I exploded. My boss at the time, who did not deserve it, found himself on the other end of my rage and fortunately for me, instead of firing me, he gave me the space I needed to immediately get help. Then finally after years of unpacking, uncovering and discovering who I really was I stepped into and took responsibility for my life… and then everything in my life changed! Ep. 54 In this episode I have the honour of chatting with my long-time BEST friend Leanne Quesnelle. Our friendship, like many that have lasted 30+ years, has seen it's ups and downs AND has been strengthened by our own personal transformations. And although many of our stories are intertwined Leanne's personal growth is unique and truly inspiring. It has been a gift to witness and learn from her willingness to surrender to her truth. In doing so has energetically elevated herself to a level, which in my opinion, equals the ultimate expression of self-love. Almost 2 decades ago, when she began her spiritual journey, she came to me with a book that “would change our lives”! You make recognize it…it's called The Secret! :) And my 'still deeply disconnected self' responded with…”I know the fucking secret Lea…The secret is take your head out of your ass!” From that day on (ignoring my resistance) she continued to pursue her truth and has manifested a life of joy, abundance and love. I am very happy that she ignored my advice (which at the time I wasn't too keen on) and unpacked The Secret for herself. Now as a Holistic Practitioner, Master Coach + Artist Leanne embraces her truth, shares her love of the earth with others through her shamanism practice and enjoys all that life has to offer with her wife on Manitoulin Island. Leanne's experience makes her uniquely qualified to guide her clients through life changing transformations. She helps women to remember and become the Soul they were born to be. Ep. 53 My guest Rose survived childhood trauma and a series of traumatic events in her young adult life. The aspects of her story that she has chosen to share may be triggering for some. Her story is powerful and the measures she went to to keep her 5 children safe are inspiring and heroic. It was an honour to bear witness to her story and an even deeper honour to be a member of the community of Goddesses that she now shares her light with. For over 2 decades Rose has used the power of personal transformation, grounding and a deep knowing ‘that her light could not be extinguished' to create multiple 6 figure businesses including a coaching practice that guides and supports heart centred female entrepreneurs to shine their light and expand their positive impact on the world. During our talk she shared how through each negative experience she was able to stay focused on the good and what she did to transform her pain into a life filled with love. Ep. 52 In the midst of her divorce Daniella felt called to uncover, more to the point, unleash her sacred sexuality. From her first workshop on shame through her training as a sacred sexual healer she learned how to be loving and giving to herself and how to truly experience pleasure. She trusted her intuition, learned how to surrender and followed her inner wisdom halfway around the world. And most importantly she learned how to bring pleasure out from behind closed doors and give it the light and attention it deserves. During our talk I experienced a personal breakthrough, where I noticed my own shame around pleasure and sexuality bubble up while she was talking and I almost let it get in the way. It is with a grateful heart that I openly shared with her what I was feeling and thankfully was able to drop in more fully. Daniella offers more than coaching, she provides those of us impacted by the social norm that pleasure is not to be talked about a safe place to explore and experience joy in the most beautifully human way. As a self-love coach Daniella combines all that she has learned about energy work, joy, tantra, healing and pleasure to help others to reconnect to themselves mentally, emotionally and physically! Ep. 51 From the age of 12, when Alison realized that who she really was, was too much for the world and ‘not allowed'… through the 2 years she stayed home with her first born, when she felt like she was playing hooky from the productive and contributing life of a corporate ladder climber, Alison was completely unsettled and ended up sick. It took many years and multiple illnesses for her to finally realize that the woman she is, and was always meant to be, was doing whatever she could to be heard. The years of not listening manifested in illness after illness. And now, after rewriting her story and attuning her life to listen and lean into her intuition, she has found wellness, a love-centred business and a life filled with JOY! Ep. 50 Stephanie looked up one day from her VERY ‘good on paper' life and realized that all the work she was putting into her 9-5 was not leaving room for what she really wanted. There were glimpses and sporadic moments during her corporate career, where she felt on purpose and lit up. And not until she was willing to set her ego aside and take that hard look inward was she able to create a life that went beyond ‘good on paper' and was good FOR her. She attributes her courage to leap into the unknown to the permission slip she gave herself to honour the seasons of her life, look beyond the next rung of the ladder and honour the process, her life and all the magic that lies within it! She ditched the traditional views of what success should look like and now, with the strength of vulnerability fuelling her, she is blazing a trail for other women to do the same. Ep. 49 My guest Sandy, a brilliant Master of Social Justice student, living happily with her husband and 4 children, shared with me an amazing story. When asked about her journey through multiple countries, addiction and raising 4 children, Sandy had this to say... “For the past decade people thought I had it all together, but I wasn't happy or proud of myself on the inside. Then by some miracle, I came face to face with the part of myself that I'd been hiding from my entire life. It took some work, but I finally realized I am (and always have been) an awesome human being. And most importantly, that I can love myself without feeling selfish for doing so.” Now, with her new awareness and commitment to self-love, she jumps at every chance to explore new adventures. One leap she is very proud of is her podcast “The Friend I Wish I Had”. It is truly a testament to her amazing journey and has become a light for other women who are struggling to see their awesomeness! Striving so long to just be happy, Jennifer sought out ways to shut out her past and create a better life. Only to realize, that her happiness wasn't going to come from negating her story, but from embracing it. Her journey and choice to create a life and business that continuously connects with and gives back to those, who like her, are doing the best they can to love, support and care for those with mental health issues, is inspiring and life affirming. Ep. 45 As a psychotherapist Debbie takes her role as a helper very seriously. And before becoming a mom, she had mastered the ability to help others all day and tune out the problems all night. Then, not long after the birth of her first (of 4) children, she began to suffer from something she frequently identified in other women, postpartum burnout. But unfortunately instead of seeking out support she (as a ‘professional helper') believed that if she had a mental health issue she would no longer be equipped to do her job. It took time and a lot of “un-masking” to finally find the courage to speak up. Now, after unpacking her struggle, she works to erase the stigma associated with mental health and gives people the tools they need to share their story and remind them that they are not alone on this journey.
