With the Cape Town Cycle Tour fast approaching this Sunday, Nicola called in to the show to share an inspiring story about her 15-year-old son, Ethan Simpson. Unlike most riders tackling the iconic race on two wheels, Ethan will be taking on the challenge on a unicycle—all in support of CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa). Nicola was on her way to collect Ethan’s race pack at the Cycle Tour Expo when she spoke to Lester, expressing both pride and excitement for her son’s remarkable effort to raise awareness for children battling cancer. Ethan’s unique ride is set to turn heads on race day while shining a light on an important cause.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When most 18-year-olds finish college, they start to think about university or starting a career. Not Ed Pratt. Aged 19, he set off from his front door on a unicycle – and three years later he'd circumnavigated the globe. Yes, you read that correctly: he rode around the entire world on one wheel.Just like Joff Summerfield from earlier on this year, Ed's sense of adventure and remarkable stories from the road made for a fascinating chat – and, of course, Rob's mind was blown.Since we spoke to Ed, he's completed another incredible challenge: following the River Thames from source to sea – without leaving it once! To check out his globetrotting unicycle journey and everything else he's been up to since, visit @EdPratt on YouTube. Before then though, settle in for this remarkable Just Ride chat with a modern British explorer.Want to suggest a guest like Ed for the show? The show opens with Godfrey reuniting with his old friend Jason “Mayhem” Miller and then telling a story of the time he had to fight someone outside the Comedy Cellar. This leads to a discussion about how great fighters - Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali & Adam Carolla - started boxing. Then Adam recounts the many run-ins with his childhood bully, Chris Dittman. After that Adam tests Godfrey's knowledge of old TV theme songs and they bond over their shared appreciation of Thin Lizzy. Next, Jayson “Mayhem” Miller begs to read the news including stories about Nvidia employees having to work insanely long hours but not quitting because of the “lavish” pay, LeBron James not allowing son Bronny to call him “Dad” on the court, a lonely dolphin attacking people in Japan, and an epic cobra vs. mongoose fight on an airport runway in India. Then, Godfrey talks about working with Robert Wagner on “A Dennis the Menace Christmas” which leads them down a long rabbit hole of TV & movie references and discussing what makes Godfrey able to retain information so well. Most people would find just getting on top of a unicycle challenging, let alone actually maneuvering it. However, some athletes are not only doing that but also playing hockey competitively whilst doing so. Some of Australia's best players in this unusual sport compete in one of the rounds of the Australian Unicycle Hockey championship. Players from teams across Australia, from Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney are battling against each other as the remaining teams get whittled down. “I love how it's so high energy and everybody is so into it. And you've got to be here in one place and focusing on this spot and it's so, chaotic,” says player Hannah Sheperd. Player Michael Watson says interest in the game is growing following a fall during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Before COVID, we had 6 or 7 of these interstate competitions in a year. It was bigger, we had more teams, but at the moment we're recovering numbers,” says Watson. Unicycle Hockey shares much of the same rules as traditional hockey. Balance, speed and accuracy are all necessary skills for the sport, which is particularly popular in Europe and the United States. “Same as standard hockey games, the nets are the same, we use ice hockey sticks and tennis balls and the rules are pretty much the same, but you can't come off,” says player David Buchanan. Players of all ages can be seen participating─from teenagers to old-timers in their 60s. “Age doesn't matter. It's just the best because it doesn't matter how old you are. It's just what you can do,” says Watson. While the rules of the game do not allow for contact between players, contact with the ground is inevitable, even for the most skilled players. However, it doesn't take long for competitors to get back in the saddle. “It probably doesn't take much longer to learn to ride than a bike, you really just have to get a unicycle which is very cheap and a wall, and find some YouTube videos and just stick at it,” says player Steven Hughes. Tami Parker had a long career in corporate HR, but 7 years ago, with a leap of faith and a supportive husband, she founded UNIcycle Business Consulting. As with most of us, her early years were spent staying alive financially and doing a little bit of this and a little bit of that, but her growing firm has found its sweet spot as an off-site HR department for our region's small business enterprises. It's often expensive for small businesses to have an HR expert on the team, so the office manager or the owner or the bookkeeper do the best they can - which can sometimes also be expensive! Tami and her team help their clients do everything HR, from creating employee handbooks and onboarding processes, to placing ads and vetting candidates from Indeed and other platforms, all on a contract basis based on team size! At present time, our employee handbook at LoCo Think Tank is a 3-page Google document - which is about 3 pages more robust than it was a year ago! As one of those small business owners who tries to do his best - but knows he's got some gaps - this was a fun conversation ranging from the basics of a sound onboarding process to open discussion around recent DEI controversies to the biggest pitfalls that employers MUST avoid. Tami was recommended to the show by a couple of my favorite members - her clients - and I'm excited to share my conversation with Tami Parker, Founder and CEO of UNIcycle Business Consulting. Barry and Abigail discuss The Masked Marauders by The Masked Marauders and sample Blueberry Moscato and Sunshine State Berry Sangria from Island Grove Wine Company in Hawthorne, Florida. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition. Abigail first learned of this “prank” album from the Ridiculous Crime episode The Battlin' Fleetwood Macs. The Masked Marauders band was made up of members from the Cleanliness and Godliness Skiffle Band. Chicken on a Unicycle has an amazing illustration of the genealogy and history of these two bands. Read the original fake review of The Masked Marauders that appeared in Rolling Stone on October 18, 1969! Abigail shared that she recently watched Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, which has a similar backstory to that of The Masked Marauders. The Wikipedia entry for the movie and the original Funny or Die trailer that inspired the movie are both worth a look. You can watch the film for free on The Roku Channel! I Can't Get No Nookie, featuring a Mick Jagger impersonator, frequently gets mislabeled as an outtake from The Rolling Stones' Jamming with Edward sessions. The version of I Am the Japanese Sandman (Rang Tang Ding Dong) that appears on The Masked Marauders is a cover of The Cellos' Rang Tang Ding Dong (I Am the Japanese Sandman) (and includes the same racist music and lyrics). In trying to locate the origins of the song, we also played Paul Whiteman's The Japanese Sandman (instrumental) and Nora Bayes' The Japanese Sandman (with lyrics). Listen to The Truncated Marauders, our “resequencing” of this album. Up next… Crash Kings by Crash Kings Theme song, jingles, and dramatic reading by our friend Pete Coe.
