Obviously, the reason that I started interviewing FFA students was their involvement in entrepreneurship. The way that the FFA facilitates exposure and learning in entrepreneurship is second to none. And, as the title of this episode suggests it really is an entrepreneurship incubator. That is very apparent in our interview with today's guest, Jenna Spangler. Jenna is a very competitive person, and upon joining the FFA she found that this organization served her competitive spirit very well. Through a myriad of different contests and competitions, she found exactly what she was looking for. Then the day came that she wanted to go on a mission trip and needed to raise $150 to make this happen. Jenna decided that she would make ice cream and sell it to people for the fundraiser and actually pre-sold what she needed to raise.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, August 9. Tuesday will start a bit foggy, but the weather will be swell after that. According to the National Weather Service there will be patchy fog before 8 a.m. in the Cedar Rapids area. Otherwise it will be sunny, with a high near 81 degrees. Tuesday night it will be mostly clear, with a low of around 59 degrees. The wind will remain calm all day. City High School in Iowa City will honor a 17-year employee and “wonderful human being” who https://www.thegazette.com/news/coralville-man-dies-while-trying-to-save-child-in-iowa-river/?utm_campaign=snd-autopilot&fbclid=IwAR1f01YQ3X8yP3OCBdTIvl9rqgDCJuXRjUUNVHO9-i1Kn0JZPo-RF1WNg-k (drowned Friday while trying to save a child from the Iowa River) in southern Johnson County. 42-year-old Wegayewu Faris,, had been a custodian at City High since 2005, according to Principal John Bacon. The school will honor him with a plaque highlighting his story. Faris was fishing Friday in the Iowa River at River Junction Access near Lone Tree when an 8-year-old boy, who was not related to Faris but was also fishing with family, went into the river and began struggling. Faris entered the river to try to save the child. With the help of Faris and a nearby kayaker, the boy got safely out of the water, but Faris became submerged. His body was found by law enforcement an hour later. A major part of Coralville's Fifth Street — an area described as the city's “civic center” — will be getting a $5 million upgrade starting next year. The portion of Fifth Street to be reconstructed starts at 12th Avenue and goes through the 20th Avenue intersection. The 12th Avenue intersection will not be impacted. The “total reconstruction” includes tearing out the pavement and replacing the sidewalks, as well as new water main and storm sewer. New trees, lighting and landscaping also will be added. Fifth Street will remain two lanes, but an 8-foot shared-use path will be added along the north side of the street out to 20th Avenue. Work is planned to be done in phases starting in the spring and continue over the next couple of years. According to the Associated Press, the FBI searched Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate as part of an investigation into whether he took classified records from the White House to his Florida residence, people familiar with the matter said Monday. Even if it doesn't lead to a trial, a search of a former president's home is unprecedented. Trump, disclosing the search in a lengthy statement, asserted that agents had opened up a safe at his home and described their work as an “unannounced raid” that he likened to “prosecutorial misconduct.” The search intensifies the months-long probe into how classified documents ended up in more than a dozen boxes located at Mar-a-Lago earlier this year. It occurs amid a separate https://apnews.com/article/capitol-siege-donald-trump-presidential-elections-election-2020-subpoenas-54fcade9ac0e15faf544b615f8f45902 (grand jury investigation) into Trump's efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. It also complicates his potential run for president, which is almost certainly still going to happen.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, June 16. Thursday's weather will be sunny and just a little bit cooler, mostly in the low temperature. According to the National Weather Service it will be sunny with a high near 91 degrees. On Thursday night it will be mostly clear, with a low of around 63 degrees. The weather will cool more over the next three days, before spiking back up starting on Sunday. Everything is getting more expensive these days, so why not add tuition to the mix. Base tuition for resident undergraduates attending one of Iowa's three public universities will increase 4.25 percent in the fall under a proposal the Board of Regents will first consider Wednesday. A final vote on the rate proposal is scheduled for July — the month before affected students arrive at their respective campuses for the 2022-23 academic year. If approved, the unde rgraduate in-state tuition increases will be $355 more for a year at Iowa, $345 at Iowa State, and $331 at UNI. Both ISU and UNI also aim to impose a 4.25-percent tuition increase on their out-of-state undergraduates, increasing non-resident tuition by $1,026 a year at ISU and by $785 at UNI. The UI intends to impose a smaller 1.17-percent tuition increase on its non-resident undergrads, mirroring its in-state $355 increase on residents. A City High administrator who students and parents said opened a school door for a senior prank that turned into vandalism has resigned from that job and now will teach at Iowa City West High School. “Scott Jespersen shared his intent to step away from his assistant principal position at City High School,” Principal John Bacon wrote in an email to parents Wednesday. The Iowa City Community School District board of directors accepted Jespersen's resignation Tuesday night, Bacon said. City High parents https://www.thegazette.com/k/iowa-city-high-vandalized-days-before-graduation/ (told The Gazette last month) Jespersen let some students into the building late May 22 to hang balloons and streamers ahead of the school's graduation ceremony, but other students came in and damaged the building by spray painting walls, pouring syrup on items and cutting up photos, among other actions. Jespersen and the Iowa City School District have not commented to the Gazette when asked about the incident. Iowa became the last state in the nation to ban elder abuse on Wednesday. Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law Shttps://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislation/BillBook?ga=89&ba=SF522 (enate File 522,) which sets criminal charges — ranging from misdemeanors to felonies punishable by up to 25 years in prison, based on the severity of the crime — for abusing, assaulting or financially exploiting a person age 60 or older. Reynolds signed the bill during a ceremony at Highland Ridge Senior Living Community in Williamsburg. After years of advocates pressing for action, the bill passed unanimously in both legislative chambers in the 2022 session. Previously, Iowa was the only state in the nation where elder abuse was not a crime. Iowa law currently includes definitions of elder abuse but does not include criminal penalties. Because it has not been a crime in Iowa, accurate data about the prevalence of elder abuse in the state is hard to ascertain, advocates said. However, Iowa has seen a sharp increase in reports of abuse or neglect of dependent adults age 18 or older, including older Iowans.

Our guest today is just finishing up his sophomore year of high school, but the progress he has made in building his cow herd since beginning it during his freshman year is phenomenal. Stetson Shook is from a family with a deep farming background in Oklahoma and Kansas, going back to the Oklahoma Land Rush. His grandparents still farm the family ground in Oklahoma about 45 minutes away from the farm that Stetson and his parents live on. Stetson has always had a passion for farming and agriculture, and this led him to know that he would one day be an FFA member. Then, at the end of his 8th grade year of school he was asked if he would be interested in becoming a Green Hand Officer, and he volunteered. This really piqued his interest in the FFA, and early in his freshman year of high school his FFA advisors saw something in him and encouraged him to take up a cattle business for his supervised agricultural experience.
Addy Stuever Battel is the 2021 National Proficiency Winner in the category of "Service Learning". After hearing her story there is no question why she won this award. With that said, there is a lot more to her story that makes this such a valuable interview. Addy was a homeschooled student who was able to participate in the FFA. I know from receiving emails from people around the country that not every school district allows students who are home schooled to participate in things like the FFA. In this episode with Addy, she will explain what the rules in her school district were and how she was able to do this.

SHOW NOTES Today's episode features one of the most unique and interesting, and possibly most dangerous, supervised agricultural experiences we have ever profiled on the Off-Farm Income Podcast. Andrew Mehus is the former chapter president of the Cochrane-Fountain City FFA Chapter. He is now studying wildlife ecology at the University Of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. He is also the 2020 National Proficiency Winner in specialty animal production. All of this stems from his SAE. Andrew works at Neitzel's Village Elk Farm near him home in Fountain City, Wisconsin. He started working there early in high school and has steadily gained more and more responsibility over time. On the farm they raise elk for the harvesting of antlers. I learned something very interesting in my interview with Andrew. Elk do not have nerve endings in their antlers. Andrew stated that sometimes when they are sawing them off the bull will just stand there as if nothing is happening. They will leave the antlers on a few of their most impressive bulls to demonstrate the quality of their genetics to other people. And, a few cull bulls and cows will be harvested for meat. But, by in large, the elk herd represents a sustainable and renewable source of a rich mineral. Andrew has not learned just about the husbandry of elk. He also has learned more about the business side of elk production. The antlers are used for the production of medicines and supplements all around the world, and it is a very niche market. Because of the unique shape of elk horns the owner of the farm developed special machinery to help catch and secure the elk when they do have to remove horns or do other work with them. This experience has really shaped Andrew and has motivated in the college major that he chose. The State Of Wisconsin has reintroduced elk in the northern part of the state, and Andrew is shooting for a future in which he works for the state department of wildlife managing that herd.
Brett is joined by Pine City head coach Kyle Allen. Kyle talks about their unique offensive style of play and the coverage they received by the Wall Street Journal. Pine City shoots upwards of 50 to 60 threes a game and Kyle talks about their offensive philosophy and how he teaches his athletes how to focus on shooting threes or layups. Then Kyle talks about the success and challenges that he has faced installing a nontraditional style of play. Finally Kyle explains the roles on his team and how he makes scouting a team building activity.
Brett is joined by Lake City head coach Greg Berge. In this podcast they talk about how Greg manages being a head coach and an administrator, his offseason basketball program known as the "300 Hour Club", 5-out motion offense, instilling confidence in his shooters, and how to build community involvement around his program.
