All kinds of stories are told at the weekly rehearsals. Some are shared for laughs. Others are merely melodies and improvisations. Some come with pictures. And some — like this one — are the tales that are many times older than all of us.As reported here earlier, traditional versions of “Pretty Polly” were on some of the first discs made by Appalachian musicians at the dawn of the recording industry. These included Eastern Kentuckian John Hammond's "Purty Polly" of 1925 and the "Pretty Polly" versions of B.F. Shelton and Dock Boggs, both in 1927.To read more about the song's fascinating origin story — it goes back nearly 300 years in Great Britain, had immigrated in the U.S. by the early 20th century to be collected by song hunter Cecil Sharp and obtained honored status in the folk song revival of the 1960s — check out the earlier Flood Watch article by clicking here.Floodifying It The Flood's version of this song lyrically follows the well-established narrative of Polly and Willie's fateful night, but melodically it takes a lot of liberties with the traditional tune. The rendition, in fact, is built on a musical idea that dates back a half century to pre-Flood days. When Charlie Bowen and David Peyton were just starting out as a duo in the early 1970s, they discovered that a repeated scale descending from an opening minor chord resonated nicely on the guitar-Autoharp accompaniment to their voices.Over the decades, each configuration of the band has found something new to contribute to this basic arrangement. And it is still happening. Just listen to what Dan Cox and Jack Nuckols brought to the song at a rehearsal earlier this month.More Folkiness? If you'd like more tunes from The Flood's dustier shelves, you can use Flood Watch's resources to find some. Visit the “Tunes on the Timeline” department; click here to reach it.Once there, scroll all the way to the bottom for links to timeless tunes and their stories, from “Barbara Allen” to “Wayfaring Stranger” listed in the Traditional category.Meanwhile, if you'd like to add even a little more Flood folkery to your wintry Friday, don't forget the free Radio Floodango music streaming service, where you can turn on the “Folk” channel for a randomize playlist of tunes.Click here to give it a spin.A Note about The GraphicsFinally, back to the video that tops this week's article, note that the graphics used to illustrate the performance were generated by artificial intelligence. As reported here earlier, nowadays we sometimes use free online AI software called ImageFX to create accommodating art for these pages. In this case, that software was asked to generate pictures that appeared to be in an old-fashioned quilt. Let us know what you think of the results. This is a public episode. Jim Justice is fond of saying West Virginia has “four of the most beautiful seasons on the planet.” And now, the West Virginia Department of Tourism has shifted its focus to marketing the state as a 12-month destination, while highlighting the unique reasons to return season after season. “As of today, our tourism numbers are almost even across the four quarters,” Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby said. “We've succeeded in making us truly a four-season destination by working with our partners to offer additional activities and events throughout the year.” While Tourism officials have identified a core demographic that comes to West Virginia looking for what it calls “high adventure” — those who come for extreme sports like rafting and mountain biking — there is also a subset who look for “soft adventure,” such as hiking, waterfall hunting and dark skies tourism. “It's people who want to be outdoors, but don't necessarily come to West Virginia with all of the equipment or aren't looking to do something that's going to take a great deal of training. They're just simply looking to escape the big cities, get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather.” Read more: https://www.wvnews.com/statejournal/news/west-virginia-department-of-tourism-expands-reach-looks-to-states-dark-skies/article_673ff524-256b-11ee-b3dc-9fc1464b9380.html   #3 – From WVCRAN –  In 2020, Dan Cox had a business plan in his head. Cox worked for large telecommunications firms in Pennsylvania but longed to create his own company in an area where broadband improvements were needed. After enlisting the help of the West Virginia Hive and taking a CO-STARTERS Core training course to pressure test his strategy, he began pitching Cox Telecom as a viable enterprise to investors. Less than one year after launching his business, Cox Telecom in Southern West Virginia is employing 16 full-time employees and creating a local and regional based operation to deploy a turnkey operation of wireless services to all cellular carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, DiSH). The company is also solving the problem of recruiting out of state labor forces to complete projects in West Virginia for cellular carriers. “Dan has exceeded all expectations in revenue and job creation,” said Peni Adams, senior business advisor at the Hive who works with the company. “Cox Telecom was the first active WV Hive client to receive an investment from the Country Roads Angel Network.” Read more: https://wvcran.com/2023/03/beckleys-cox-telecom-llc-employing-16-staff-and-improving-broadband-in-southern-west-virginia-after-one-year-in-business/   Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. SMITH POISED TO INDICT TRUMP FOR...RIGGING THE ELECTION! 7.20.23

EPISODE 251: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:42) SPECIAL COMMENT: The same-day reporting on what was in Jack Smith's 2nd Target Letter to Trump was incomplete (possibly because Trump was the direct or indirect source and he only skimmed the letter and saw only the Statute Heading not the statute itself). If the Letter is any guide, The Special Counsel's centerpiece to the January 6th prosecution of Donald Trump is US Code 18 Section 241 - originally a Reconstruction-era law designed to prosecute Ku Klux Klan members for terrorizing freed slaves and keeping them from voting. It later morphed into the preferred tool for voting fraud and was affirmed in a Supreme Court ruling written by Thurgood Marshall in 1974, per The New York Times. It would fit all the "Fake Electors" schemes, but it would match what Trump tried to do ("I just want to find 11,780 votes") perfectly. It is the denial of the most fundamental constitutional right. Bottom line: Smith wants to prosecute Trump for trying to have a RIGGED THE ELECTION. For ELECTION INTERFERENCE. For FIXING THE VOTE. It would be an irony that would ring through the ages. I'll assess its meaning and how and why we missed it (John Barron? John Miller?) on Tuesday night, plus Trump's disastrous legal day. PLUS: Trump may not have had the WORST day. Ask Marjorie Groomer Greene, who spent the day showing America her porn collection: giant blown-up photos of Hunter Biden having sex. It was so bad, and the Republicans so beclowned themselves, that Congressman Jared Moskowitz quipped "Maybe now we need to call HUNTER Biden 'The Big Guy.'" B-BLOCK (21:43) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Stanford's student-run campus newspaper wins all the awards: its investigation of the University president's academic research work just led to him quitting. This flashed me back to how MY university president's academic qualifications (Dean of Engineering; co-discoverer of Element Number 85) saved the two of us from getting on a damaged Allegheny Airlines plane they were trying to repair with paper towels (29:12) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: If they're gonna make up Biden Million-Dollar Bribes, go big. And who better to believe anything than Maria Bartiromo. There's also the Maryland Congressional candidate who didn't know he was one, and the self-martyring saga of Twitter clown Catturd. C-BLOCK (35:20) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: The sad tale of Fizz in the NYC pound (36:25) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: My producer had to explain to me that no, Rachel Maddow wasn't going to be on our MSNBC primary night coverage because my boss actually had LIED when he said he'd signed her to a contract, and we were about to lose her to CNN because Larry King offered her $250 to work there that night. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Agritourism: Italian-inspired hospitality in the UK

The Food Programme

Italy is famous the world over for its delicious food and beautiful countryside. The two come together in the form of the agriturismo, a type of farm-stay where the food – produced on the farm itself – takes centre stage. Agritourism there has been hugely successful since it was first established in the 1980s as a way to make small farms viable. It now contributes around 1.9 billion euros to the Italian economy every year. Agritourism is in its infancy in the UK, where a young generation of chefs have decamped from the city to the countryside to take on farms, and ensure they have absolute control over how their ingredients are sourced. Jaega Wise visits Coombeshead Farm in Cornwall, where guests can eat, sleep and explore where their food comes from and understand how it's produced. The farm is managed by Tom Adams, who previously ran a successful food truck and restaurant in London. She also talks to Hugo Guest and his wife Olive, who again left London behind to set up a farm restaurant and guest house in Devon. They discuss the influence of Italian agritourism on their venture, which opened just after the Covid-19 lockdowns. We hear the thoughts of Gabriella Parkes, a researcher in rural tourism from Harper Adams University, on how the pandemic gave a boost to rural tourism and an interest in locally produced food. Caroline Millar from Scottish Agritourism and the Global Agritourism Network tells the programme how Scotland aims to take inspiration from Italy for its own burgeoning agritourism industry. Jaega discusses with chefs Dan Cox and Hugo Harrison the lengths they and others have gone to in order to chase the perfect produce. She also talks to Tom Adams, Dan Cox and Hugo Harrison about the cost of establishing this kind of enterprise, and whether it's inevitable that these places remain accessible only to wealthy people. Finally, hotel critic Fiona Duncan sums up why staying and eating on a farm – as in Italy – is a truly immersive experience, and how more of these could invigorate the UK's restaurant and hotel scene. Presented by Jaega Wise. Produced by Fiona Clampin.
