One year after devastating floods in Barre, stories of survival and anxiety

The Vermont Conversation with David Goodman

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 10, 2024 49:49

When flood waters tore through parts of Vermont last July, countless lives were upended. Barre, the Granite City, was especially hard hit. Parts of downtown were buried in thick mud, and the city public works department spent days sending snowplows through the streets to clear them. This week, virtually everyone I talked with in Barre expressed anxiety about heavy rains and potential flash flooding expected on Wednesday and Thursday. I stopped by Dente's Market, Barre's last corner grocery. The store dates back to 1907. Last year when I visited, the sodden contents of the store were heaped on the sidewalk. I found its owner, Rick Dente, standing on the porch of a house that he owns just behind the market. Locals affectionately call him the Mayor of North Barre. When I met Dente last year, he told me of his harrowing near-death experience during the flood. He was in water up to his neck, pinned to a door in the back of his market, his legs about to give out. Just when Dente thought it was over, three tenants who lived above his store came down, ropes around their waists. They banged open the door and rescued the exhausted shopkeeper.“Someone was watching over me,” Dente told me last year inside his mud filled market. Today, collectible glass milk containers and old Coke bottles once again sparkled on the shelves, and coolers offered an assortment of food and drink. Rick Dente was behind the counter in his usual post where he has been greeting his Barre neighbors for decades.Dente said that he has had health impacts related to the 2023 flood. “I've had some physical issues that I'm told can be the result of your body experiencing some serious, serious stress.”“Hopefully I can stay in good health and keep going for at least a few more years,” he said of his 117 year old family business. “Time will tell.”When I visited Vermont Bicycle Shop, I discovered that it had moved from its location on Main Street. The new store opened this week a few blocks away at a location that did not flood.“I always describe last year as both the best and worst thing that's ever happened to me,” said bike store owner Darren Ohl, whose basement stocked with over $100,000 in inventory was under 8 feet of water last year. Community members created a GoFundMe for the bike shop that raised over $26,000.“The flood was terrible to go through," said Ohl. But it "was wonderful was seeing how much our community came out. We had over 25 volunteers with over 20 volunteers for almost 30 days straight. So many people would just come to the shop and just write us a check and donate money. That was astounding to experience as a business owner. And without that we would have folded. We would have gone out of business.”“That community response is one of the things that holds neighborhoods and communities together,” said Pam Wilson, a founder of Barre Up, a group working on long term recovery. “That's how you survive an unpredictable climate future. It's based in community care.”

Julie Burkhart, President of Wellspring Health Access, one of the organizations behind the Wyoming District Court Case who last June successfully blocked a Wyoming law from going into effect that would have banned abortion medication in the state – released the following statement responding to a Louisiana bill lawmakers approved today that would make the state the first to categorize mifepristone and misoprostol as controlled dangerous substances, criminalizing possession of the two abortion medications: “It is appalling that Louisiana lawmakers have approved a bill recategorizing Mifepristone and Misoprostol as controlled substances in the state, especially given both drugs are used safely by hundreds of thousands of women each year to terminate their pregnancies. It is now one step closer to dangerously becoming law.  “Additionally, these drugs are not illicit or addictive drugs, and have other medical uses.  The passage of this amendment to reclassify these two safe medications as controlled substances, on the level of heroin and methamphetamine, will have a chilling effect on doctors, patients and undoubtedly adversely impact maternal health outcomes in Louisiana.  “Instead of pushing to criminalize those who are helping people access safe, legal medication abortion, the state legislature should instead focus on pressing issues that would actually benefit the well-being of those they swear an oath to represent.” Julie Burkhart is a national abortion rights leader, former senior advisor to slain Wichita-abortion provider Dr. George Tiller, and the only person in the country who has opened an abortion clinic in a state where it had been banned.Ms. Burkhart is currently the president of Wellspring Health Access which has a clinic in Casper, Wyoming and co-owner of Hope Clinic in Granite City, Illinois, a nationally trusted leader in abortion services since 1974. Burkhart is regularly called on by national and local media to offer insight into the debate, including this recent New York Times profile piece about the Casper, WY clinic, and also a new short documentary of the Wellspring Health Access clinic and its operations.  Julie speaks with Mark Alyn on this episdoe of Late Night Health.  Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/late-night-health-radio--2804369/support.

Dr. Stice is also certified in Acupuncture and Chiropractic Pediatrics. After graduation from Logan, Dr. Stice worked in Edwardsville as an associate Doctor for a clinic as well as traveling through the metro east area as a travel doctor. In April 2012, Dr. Stice purchased his practice from Dr. Bradley Virgin, who practiced here in beautiful Litchfield for more than 30 years. His decision to purchase the practice was not a difficult one, as Dr. Stice fell in love with Litchfield and its surrounding areas. Dr. Ryan Stice uses chiropractic care to improve the health and wellness in all areas of patient's lives, whether they are having problems with back pain or neck pain, or just want to start feeling better when they wake up in the morning. Dr. Stice takes a ‘whole person' approach in chiropractic care, which means looking for the underlying causes of disease, discomfort, and pain, as opposed to just treating the symptoms. Many seemingly unrelated symptoms often arise from imbalances in the spinal column, and Dr. Stice will be able to determine the root of the pain and create a personalized chiropractic and wellness plan to suit each patient's individual needs. Under the supervision and care of our caring and skilled chiropractor, patients report higher functioning in all areas of their lives. The steel mill town being reshaped by abortion

Today on “Post Reports,” we take you to a conservative-leaning steel town in Illinois grappling with its new role as home to the closest abortion clinics for many patients in the South and Midwest post-Roe.Read more:Granite City is a conservative-leaning community in Southern Illinois that's seen layoffs at the local steel mill and had dozens of businesses close in recent years. But the city is now becoming known for something else: abortion. It's home to the closest abortion clinics for many out-of-state patients across the South and Midwest who can no longer access the procedure where they live because of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe. v Wade. Granite City's geography – it sits at the bottom of a blue state, surrounded by a sea of red states with abortion bans – means as many as 14,000 people are expected to come here for an abortion in the next year. That influx of abortion patients could infuse much-needed cash into the city. But some in Granite City are not comfortable hitching their economic fortunes to abortion.Abortion reporter Caroline Kitchener and audio producer Ariel Plotnick went to Granite City just days after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. They talked to people in the community about what this post-Roe era could mean for their city.
