In episode 207 of America Adapts, Dr. Kelly Turner of UCLA and Dr. Ladd Keith at the University of Arizona join host Doug Parsons to discuss groundbreaking work in extreme heat governance and planning, specifically focusing on the recent NOAA grant awarded to launch the Center for Heat Resilient Communities. The grant aims to enhance heat resilience in communities by encouraging connections between stakeholders and the federal government, with a heavy emphasis on climate justice and environmental justice as part of President Biden's Justice40 initiative. The discussion also covers federally funded research programs supporting rural and tribal communities with heat resilience, mapping shade equity nationally, and initiatives on indoor cooling. Kelly and Ladd encourage involvement in the field of heat policy and governance, inviting individuals to reach out and engage with the three year project. Topics covered: NOAA Grant Overview Biden Administration's Role Principals and Key Partners/Community Partnerships Heat Resilient Communities Framework Evaluating Heat Resilience Policies Training Future Heat Leaders Funding and Support for Communities Climate and Environmental Justice Media Coverage of Extreme Heat Plug for Other Research Programs for Kelly and Ladd Call to Action: Visit heat.gov Principal Researchers for the Grant: Dr. V. Kelly Turner, UCLA (lead)   Dr. Ladd Keith, University of Arizona   Dr. Sara Meerow, Arizona State University Transcript of episode available here.    Quotes from the episode: Dr. Kelly Turner:  Really, there are two main goals. One is to to create a robust framework across a diverse set of contexts that communities could use to do heat resilience work. And so we have a series of six cores that the whole center is organized around. So the first goal is for us to create this framework. And the second goal is to then fund and to support communities. So 10 communities per year over three years to test that framework and refine it. And I could get into a little bit about each one of the cores if that's of interest.   Dr. Ladd Keith  And we'll be co-developing essentially this heat resilient framework that the communities will be going through. And it involves all the cores and is really focused on supporting heat action planning at the local level and really drawing on that network of experts that we have involved in the center. I think one of the exciting things is we'll be co-developing this heat resilient framework with the communities that we're working with. And of Of course, we'll be supporting the initial 30 communities, but we'll also be putting a lot of that information on heat.gov so that it's accessible to all of the other 19,000 communities in the United States. And another part of it that's really exciting is all of the lessons that we're going to learn through the center is feeding that back to federal agencies and really partnering with them so they know how to better support community heat planning as well.   Check out the America Adapts Media Kit here! Astronomers capture magnetic fields twirling around black hole

A new image from the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration, which includes researchers and telescopes of the University of Arizona, has uncovered strong and organized magnetic fields spiraling from the edge of the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*, or Sgr A*. Seen in polarized light for the first time, this new view of the monster lurking at the center of our Milky Way galaxy has revealed a magnetic field structure strikingly similar to that of a much more massive black hole, known as M87*, at the center of the M87 galaxy, suggesting that strong magnetic fields may be common to all black holes. This similarity also hints toward a hidden jet in Sgr A*. The results were published on March 27 in the journal The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Learning more about black holes and their magnetic fields Scientists unveiled the first image of Sgr A* - which is approximately 27,000 light-years from Earth - in 2022, revealing that while the Milky Way's supermassive black hole is more than a thousand times smaller and less massive than M87's, it looks remarkably similar. This made scientists wonder whether the two shared common traits outside of their looks. To find out, the team decided to study Sgr A* in polarized light. Previous studies of light around M87* revealed that the magnetic fields around the black hole giant allowed it to launch powerful jets of material back into the surrounding environment. Building on this work, the new images have revealed that the same may be true for Sgr A*. Boris Georgiev, an EHT postdoctoral researcher at UArizona's Steward Observatory and co-author on the study, said: "The consistency of magnetic field structures around Sgr A* and M87* suggests that the processes by which black holes feed and eject jets into their surroundings may be universal, despite their vast differences in size and mass." "What we're seeing now is that there are strong, twisted and organized magnetic fields near the black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy," said Sara Issaoun, NASA Hubble Fellowship Program Einstein Fellow at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian and co-lead of the project. "Along with Sgr A* having a strikingly similar polarization structure to that seen in the much larger and more powerful M87* black hole, we've learned that strong and ordered magnetic fields are critical to how black holes interact with the gas and matter around them." Light is a moving oscillation of electric and magnetic fields that allows us to see objects. Sometimes, light oscillates in a preferred orientation, also known as polarized. Although polarized light surrounds us, to human eyes it is indistinguishable from "normal," or non-polarized, light. In the plasma around these black holes, particles whirling around magnetic field lines impart a polarization pattern perpendicular to the field. This allows astronomers to see in increasingly vivid detail what is happening in black hole regions and map their magnetic field lines. "By imaging polarized light from hot glowing gas near black holes, we are directly inferring the structure and strength of the magnetic fields that thread the flow of gas and matter that the black hole feeds on and ejects," said Angelo Ricarte, Harvard Black Hole Initiative Fellow and project co-lead. "Polarized light teaches us a lot more about the astrophysics, the properties of the gas and mechanisms that take place as a black hole feeds." But imaging black holes in polarized light isn't as easy as putting on a pair of polarized sunglasses, and this is particularly true of Sgr A*, which is changing so fast that it doesn't sit still for pictures. Imaging the supermassive black hole requires sophisticated tools above and beyond those previously used for capturing M87*, a much steadier target. Dan Marrone, EHT co-principal investigator and a co-author of the paper who is a professor of astronomy at Steward Observatory, and his team developed instruments that detected the polarized radio ...

Mars is more volcanically active than previously thought

Recent volcanism on Mars reveals a planet more active than previously thought A vast, flat, "featureless" plain on Mars surprised researchers by revealing a much more tumultuous geologic past than expected, according to a study led by researchers at the University of Arizona. Enormous amounts of lava have erupted from numerous fissures as recently as one million years ago, blanketing an area almost as large as Alaska and interacting with water in and under the surface, resulting in large flood events that carved out deep channels. Why Mars is not geologically dead Lacking plate tectonics - shifting chunks of crust that constantly reshape Earth's surface - Mars has long been thought to be a geologically "dead" planet where not much is happening. Recent discoveries have researchers questioning this notion, however. Just last year, a team of planetary scientists, also at UArizona, presented evidence for a giant mantle plume underneath the region Elysium Planitia, driving intense volcanic and seismic activity in a relatively recent past. In the most recent study, a team led by Joana Voigt and Christopher Hamilton at UArizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory combined spacecraft images and measurements from ground-penetrating radar to reconstruct in three-dimensional detail every individual lava flow in Elysium Planitia. The extensive survey revealed and documented more than 40 volcanic events, with one of the largest flows infilling a valley named Athabasca Valles with almost 1,000 cubic miles of basalt. "Elysium Planitia is the youngest volcanic terrain on the planet, and studying it helps us to better understand Mars' past as well as recent hydrological and volcanic history," the authors write in their paper. Although no volcanic activity has so far been observed on Mars, "Elysium Planitia was volcanically much more active than previously thought and might even still be volcanically alive today," said Voigt, the first author of the study, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets. A plethora of Mars quakes recorded by NASA's InSight lander between 2018 until 2022 has provided proof that beneath its surface, the red planet is anything but dead. "Our study provides the most comprehensive account of geologically recent volcanism on a planet other than Earth," said Hamilton, associate professor at LPL. "It is the best estimate of Mars' young volcanic activity for about the past 120 million years, which corresponds to when the dinosaurs roaming the Earth at their peak to present." The findings have implications for research surrounding whether Mars could have harbored life at some point in its history, according to the authors. Elysium Planitia experienced several large floods of water, and there is evidence that the outpouring lava interacted with water or ice, shaping the landscape in dramatic ways. Across Elysium Planitia, Voigt and her co-authors found ample evidence of steam explosions, interactions that are of great interest to astrobiologists because they may have created hydrothermal environments conducive to microbial life. The team used images from the Context camera onboard NASA's Reconnaissance Orbiter, or MRO, combined with even higher-resolution images from MRO's UArizona-led HiRISE camera in selected areas. To obtain topographical information, they took advantage of data records from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter on another NASA spacecraft, Mars Global Surveyor. These survey data were then combined with subsurface radar measurements taken with NASA's Shallow Radar, or SHARAD, probe. "With SHARAD, we were able to look as deep as 140 meters (460 feet) below the surface," said Voigt, who completed the study as part of earning her doctoral degree at UArizona. She is now a postdoctoral researcher at Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, or JPL, in Pasadena, California. "Combining the datasets allowed us to reconstruct a three-dimensional view of the study area, including what the topography was like befo...

Sapkota, PhD, Professor, School of Public Health, Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health Yael Perez, PhD, Development Engineering Program Director at the Blum Center and the InFEWS Program Coordinator Joining us from three different NSF research traineeships on food, energy, and water systems (FEWS), our panelists will share each programs' challenges, opportunities, and sustainability. Abstract The NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) program seeks to explore ways for graduate students in research-based master's and doctoral degree programs to develop the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers. The program is dedicated to effective training of STEM graduate students in high priority interdisciplinary or convergent research areas, through a comprehensive traineeship model that is innovative, evidence-based, and aligned with changing workforce and research needs. Join us as the GES Center hosts a panel to learn about three NRT programs focused on Food, Energy and Water Systems (FEWS). Now that the programs have finished and/or are close to finishing, what future lies for their continuation? What lessons have they learned about implementing an interdisciplinary and convergent research program? We will discuss each programs' challenges, opportunities, and sustainability with the traineeship. Our speakers include: Dr. Karletta Chief with Indige-FEWSS (Indigenous Food, Energy, and Water Security and Sovereignty) at the University of Arizona, Dr. Amy Sapkota with the Global STEWARDS (STEM Training at the Nexus of Energy, WAter Reuse and FooD Systems) program at the University of Maryland, and Dr. Yael Perez with InFEWS (Innovations at the Nexus of Food, Energy, and Water Systems) at the Blum Center for Developing Economies at the University of California Berkeley. Two of her primary tribal projects are The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Climate Adaptation and Traditional Knowledge Project and Gold King Mine Spill Diné Exposure Project. Dr. Chief also leads the NSF Indigenous Food, Energy, and Water Security and Sovereignty Program and is training 38 graduate students. Indige-FEWSS's vision is to develop a diverse workforce with intercultural awareness and expertise in sustainable food, energy, and water systems (FEWS), specifically through off grid technologies to address the lack of safe water, energy, and food security in Indigenous communities. Dr. Amy Sapkota is an MPower Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Public Health. She is the Interim Director of the Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health and the Director of CONSERVE: A Center of Excellence at the Nexus of Sustainable Water Reuse, Food & Health that was launched with funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Institute of Food and Agriculture in 2016. She is also the Principal Investigator of a doctoral training program, UMD Global STEWARDS (STEM Training at the Nexus of Energy, WAter Reuse and FooD Systems)—funded by the National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT) program—that is preparing a cadre of future leaders focused on innovations at the nexus of food, energy and water systems. Dr. Sapkota's research interests lie in the areas of environmental microbiology, environmental microbial genomics and exposure assessment. Her projects evaluate the complex relationships between environmental microbial exposures and human infectious diseases, with a special focus on assessing the public health impacts associated with water reuse. Dr.  Yael Perez is the Development Engineering (DevEng) Program Director at UC Berkeley's Blum Center for Developing Economies, managing the DevEng Masters and the DevEng PhD Designated Emphasis. Yael holds a PhD in Architecture from UC Berkeley with a scholarship on co-design methodologies and technologies to support and empower communities and design practitioners in fostering sustainable development. For over a decade, she has been collaboratively leading CARES—Community Assessment of Renewable Energy and Sustainability—a team of UC Berkeley faculty and students working with Native American Citizens in their pursuit of sustainable development. Recently, this initiative grew into the Native FEWS Alliance, a cross-institutional collaboration working to significantly broaden the participation of Native American students in Food, Energy, and Water Systems (FEWS) education and careers to address critical challenges facing their communities. Before joining the Blum Center, Yael was a visiting scholar at IIT Mandi (India). How to do Purposeful Daydreaming - Huggable problems, Colleen Kelley, Ph.D.

On the podcast today is Colleen Kelley, Ph.D.  University of Arizona.  Her goal is to reach educators and kids to get them to try purposeful daydreaming before taking on tests and creative tasks. She makes a great point that letting it come to us is the answer and that pause allows us the time and space to get creative. The practice of using case studies in higher education has been an effective tool for teaching everything from medicine to law. These case studies are based on ‘real life' scenarios and are often framed as a mystery to solve. Dr. Colleen Kelley has embraced the use of case studies in her chemistry courses for the past few decades. She has used these in graduate level courses in medicinal chemistry and most recently in her 100-level course at UArizona. Dr. Kelley's students have found that the case studies enriched their understanding of chemical concepts and connect those concepts to everyday life. This led Dr. Kelley to ask the questions, “Could we use case studies, framed in an age-appropriate manner, to teach a much younger audience?” and “Can early eager learners master chemical concepts from carefully scaffolded chemistry mysteries?” She wanted to find out, so she began creating a series of chemistry mysteries in a comic book format for students ages 8 to 12.   Please visit her online - https://kidschemicalsolutions.com/   As always, thank you for listening.
