The Comeback Code by Jake Bailey. Jake came to national prominence when, only a few days before he was due to make the end of year speech as Head Boy at Christchurch Boys' High, he was diagnosed with a deadly aggressive cancer – and made the speech anyway. This is his second book – after living through such adversity he then had a lot of questions and studied psychology to look for answers – and in this book he shares his experience and knowledge, providing insights and mechanisms for other people facing major setbacks to help them through it. How to Say Babylon by Safiyah Sinclair. She was the daughter of a radical Rastafarian in Jamaica, who was obsessed with keeping his girls away from the “unclean” world, which they referred to as Babylon. He was a brutal, difficult father and she had a tough childhood, but she also had the soul of a poet which is what she wanted to become (and eventually did). This is an extraordinary memoir about those early years and then finally being able to find her voice and the courage she needed to break free from her father. I think fans of Tara Westover's Educated will love this as much as I did. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In Leaders Getting Coffee episode 34, our guest is Foodstuffs CEO, Chris Quin. The supermarket industry is never far from the headlines. Whether we’re talking about grocery prices, retail crime or allegations of monopoly pricing, the supermarket is front and centre. But they are also massive businesses playing a critical role in our daily lives and our communities. Chris Quin is the CEO of Foodstuffs North Island, the largest grocery business in New Zealand. His leadership experiences have seen him through an outstanding career that includes over two decades at Telecom/Spark, before joining the grocery giant. He grew up in a family that moved around a lot but ultimately settled in Wellington where he attended St Pat’s Silverstream College near Wellington, where he became Head Boy. An accounting degree from Victoria University followed, while working part time at a supermarket (what else?) to pay his way through his studies. During the Leaders Getting Coffee podcast Chris Quin speaks passionately about the twenty-four years he spent at Telecom and Spark, his passion for technology and his two failed attempts at winning the top job there. But it was the challenges of the grocery world that ultimately saw him sit in the CEO’s office, and from where he has made his mark for the last decade. We talk in detail about the drive to keep groceries affordable and the efforts to merge Foodstuffs’ North and South Island businesses in order to continue the search for maximum productivity. Quin is forthright in his views of the importance of the merger and his reaction to the Commerce Commission ruling that it should not proceed. We also discuss the alarming boost in retail crime over recent years, and how facial recognition technology is one of many technology-based tools helping to win that fight. Chris Quin is the leader of one of our biggest businesses, and one with which we all interact more than any other. In sharing his experiences there are plenty of lessons for aspiring and established leaders alike.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Joining Jill and Doron on our 24th episode, the sixth of our second season, to tell us his story is our first guest from Ireland, author Yanky Fachler, known as Jacky at Carmel College, where he was Head Boy. Following two years at Yeshiva in Israel, Yanky studied Psychology, Sociology and Economics at Brunel, where he also earned a Masters degree in Sociology, before returning to Israel. For two decades he then worked with a multitude of Israeli advertising agencies as an English language freelance copywriter until he moved to Ireland to coach corporate executives in communication. He now lives with his wife in a small town between Belfast and Dublin, and chairs the Jewish Historical Society of Ireland. Yanky is a regular contributor to the ‘Word in Edgeways' broadcast, and a writer. In addition to his memoirs (“Yanky's Doodles”), he wrote a book on the Jewish community of Letchworth, in which he grew up, and since October 7th, emails out several times a week a morale-boosting summary of the relevant news. His two sons live in California and Israel, respectively. Hear Yanky talk about why' Yanky' became ‘Jacky', becoming Head Boy, his act of civil disobedience in the Carmel synagogue, and beating The Beatles to record at Abbey Road Studios. Thank you, Yanky Jack Fachler, for turning us again to Carmel days! The chapter on Carmel College from Yanky's memoirs can be found here: https://www.carmelcollege.co.uk/the-road-from-carmel-podcast Dedication: at Yanky's request, this episode is dedicated to the memory of Yisrael Alexander, his former teacher as well as father of his friend and Carmel contemporary, David Alexander. Born in Berlin, the son of a rabbi, Yisrael was - at the age of 15, in 1938, following Kristallnacht - deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp for belonging to a Zionist youth movement, but managed to escape the Shoah on a Kindertransport to England, where he met not only his future wife, Chaya, but also Yanky's parents. Around the time of the State of Israel's founding, Yisrael and Chaya joined a kibbutz. In the mid-fifties, Yisrael and his young family came to Carmel, where he taught Jewish Studies, Hebrew and German. He passed away in Israel in 2005 at the age of 84. Chapter Eleven - The Dueling Club“So Dobby stopped us getting on the train and broke your arm…” He shook his head. “You know what, Harry? If he doesn't stop trying to save your life he's going to kill you.”Q1 - At this stage of their schooling, which Wizard or Witch would you want to duel and which would you not want to duel?“Scared?” muttered Malfoy, so that Lockhart couldn't hear him. “You wish,” said Harry out of the corner of his mouth.Q2 - If you could talk to any animal, which one would you choose?Q3 - Do you think Harry is Slytherin's descendant?“No one knows how he survived that attack by You-Know-Who. I mean to say, he was only a baby when it happened. He should have been blasted into Smithereens. Only a really powerful Dark wizard could have survived a curse like that.” He dropped his voice until it was barely more than a whisper, and said, “That's probably why You-Know-Who wanted to kill him in the first place. Didn't want another Dark Lord competing with him.”Q4 - Do you think Ernie is right here?Q5 - What do you think a blood-sucking Bugbear is?Q6 - Why are the students getting petrified rather than killed?Chapter Twelve - The Polyjuice Potion“Fawkes is a Phoenix, Harry. Phoenixes burst into flame when it is time for them to die and are reborn from the ashes. Watch him…”Q1 - Would you want to have a Phoenix as a pet?Q2 - Should Harry have confided in Dumbledore? No one, not even someone dreading taking Polyjuice Potion later, could fail to enjoy Christmas dinner at Hogwarts.Q3 - Which character would you want to impersonate for an hour after taking some polyjuice?Q4 - What do you think Draco's parents are doing that is keeping Draco at Hogwarts for the holidays?Mr Weasley was unavailable for comment, although his wife told reporters to clear off or she'd set the family ghoul on them.“And Father won't tell me anything about the last time the Chamber was opened, either. Of course, it was fifty years ago, so it was before his time, but he knows all about it, and he says that it was all kept quiet and it'll look suspicious if I know too much about it.”Q5 - Theories on who opened it the first time?Chapter 13 - The Very Secret Diary“Let's all throw books at Myrtle, because she can't feel it! Ten points if you can get it through her stomach! Fifty points if it goes through her head!”Q1 - Is Myrtle quoting from the official counting book for the point system of Hogwarts?Q2 - Do you think ghosts can die?“Because Filch made me polish his shield about fifty times in detention,” said Ron resentfully. “That was the one I burped slugs all over. If you'd wiped slime off a name for an hour, you'd remember it too.”Q3 - What do you think T.M. Riddle's special services to the school award was for?“He sounds like Percy,” said Ron, wrinkling his nose in disgust. “Prefect, Head Boy — probably top of every class.” “You say that like it's a bad thing,” said Hermione, in a slightly hurt voice.Snape was looking as though the first person to ask him for a Love Potion would be force-fed poison.Q4 - You ever get a valentine?“It was Hagrid, Ron. Hagrid opened the Chamber of Secrets fifty years ago.”Q5 - How do you think Hagrid opened the Chamber?Chapter 14 - Cornelius FudgeAnd if, as a boy, Hagrid had heard that a monster was hidden somewhere in the castle, Harry was sure he'd have gone to any lengths for a glimpse of it.Q1 - Do you think Hagrid's love for misunderstood creatures is endearing or foolish? In the end, he chose the same new subjects as Ron, feeling that if he was rubbish at them, at least he'd have someone friendly to help him.“Yet again, Cornelius, I tell you that taking Hagrid away will not help in the slightest,” said Dumbledore. His bluey eyes were full of a fire that Harry had never seen before.Q2 - What are your first thoughts of Fudge?“Take him away, an' the Muggle-borns won' stand a chance! There'll be killings next!”“However,” said Dumbledore, speaking very slowly and clearly, so that none of them could miss a word, “you will find that I will only truly have left the school when none here are loyal to me. You will also find that help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it.”Q3 - What do you think Dumbledore means?
Welcoming Ezekiel Raui, the new Head of the One New Zealand Foundation, to the Purposely Podcast. Ezekiel shares his organisation's mission as well as his remarkable journey from Head Boy to social entrepreneur and nonprofit leader.Even before his university days, Ezekiel Raui had already stacked up a lifetime's worth of achievements. As head boy at Taipa College in the Far North of New Zealand, he pioneered a leadership academy and a peer support program, showcasing his early passion for innovation, purpose, and community impact. His initiatives even caught the attention of policymakers, leading him to share his ideas at the Beehive. Not stopping there, Ezekiel was part of a youth delegation to Washington DC, where he attended the historic Tribal Youth Gathering at the White House and had the honor of meeting President Obama. These early accomplishments set the stage for a series of accolades, including the prestigious Young Achiever of the Year at the 2016 Matariki Awards and the Ngārimu VC and 28th Māori Battalion Memorial Scholarship. Ezekiel has also been voted into the Forbes 30 under 30. At the tender age of 26, Ezekiel's dedication to purpose and helping others is palpable. His inspiration stemmed from a profound experience where he discovered that two of his friends were involved in drug activities during school hours because that is what they thought they were destined to do and had no other options in life. This revelation fuelled Ezekiel's determination to make a difference. Driven by this conviction, he co-founded Tūkotahi, a social enterprise dedicated to providing comprehensive peer support for young individuals navigating mental health challenges. His commitment to social good was further underscored by his selection as one of four New Zealand Māori ambassadors to attend the 2015 Inaugural White House Tribal Leaders Conference, hosted by President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Now at the helm of Te Rourou - One New Zealand Foundation, Ezekiel's vision is clear: to continue the foundation's vital work in supporting marginalized and disadvantaged young people across New Zealand. Established in Aotearoa in 2002, the foundation, the corporate arm of One NZ (formerly Vodafone), operates as a grant-making charity, guided by its own Board of Directors. Over the years, One NZ has invested more than $48 million to support the foundation's initiatives, funding over 1,000 community organisations. Proudly one of the largest corporate philanthropic funders in Aotearoa, the foundation leverages the resources and skills of the One New Zealand team to drive sustainable and measurable change through digital investment, corporate partnerships, operational and communications support, advocacy, and mentoring.Their primary focus thus far has been on empowering young people in Southland, situated at the southern tip of New Zealand's South Island. This strategic approach to philanthropy, initiated before Ezekiel's tenure, reflects the foundation's commitment to making a tangible difference in communities where it matters most and where funding partners were harder to find.Looking ahead, Ezekiel's overarching aspiration for the foundation is ambitious yet grounded in pragmatism. He envisions a future where the foundation serves as a catalyst for lasting change, empowering charities and social impact partners to be effective and sustainable. Regardless of shifts in business dynamics or funding sources, Ezekiel remains steadfast in his belief in the symbiotic relationship between business and philanthropy. By equipping communities with the necessary skills and resources to thrive independently, the foundation ensures that its impact endures long after its direct involvement ceases. In our conversation with Ezekiel Raui, we glimpse not only the remarkable achievements of a young leader but also the profound impact of purpose-driven initiatives in transforming lives and communities. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mark-longbottom2/message

What is homophily and does it make the boat go faster? In this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking I speak with Trainer, Coach and Speaker, Adam Armstrong, a former Head Boy of and teacher at the famous Italia Conti Performing Arts School. His acting credits include The Bill, Grange Hill, and The Minder. And his students have included Russell Brand, Danny Mays, Martine McCutcheon, and Claire goose. I met Adam a year ago when, alongside fellow acting coach, Peter Ferris, we designed an acting course for stunt trainees which we now run for the British Stunt Register. Adam also founded his own training company, Herald, in 2009, which offers bespoke presentation training and coaching around personal effectiveness, communication skills, creative thinking and change management. Also, he's studied Psychology and NLP, and he's ex-champion runner, completing a mile in very close to 4 minutes! Before I met Adam, I'd never heard the word homophily or the expression ‘Does it make the boat go faster?' Now I use both regularly! This culminates the Lecture exploring the changing attitudes towards Afro-Caribbean Beliefs at Jamaica Theological Seminary on July 23, 2023. Renaldo provided a powerful climax to the lecture exploring Caribbean Theology and the need to value Caribbean traditions of any influence. The Lecture delivered via the Zoom platform was dynamic and is infused with African drums, reggae music, and classical music in the backgrounds with added images and videos in the background to enhance your listening/viewing experience. Prof. McKenzie discusses with his class the importance and parameters of the study that is being conducted. Abstract: Research Plan: On Valuing African Identity through religious affirmations of African traditions. By examining changing attitudes towards Afro-Caribbean beliefs in Jamaica, this study aims to shed light on the impact of socio-political factors, religion, education, pop culture, travel experiences, and exposure on the evolving perceptions of Jamaicans. The findings will contribute to a deeper understanding of how societal changes influence cultural attitudes, promoting inclusivity, tolerance, and cultural heritage preservation. Ultimately, this research aims to encourage a more informed and respectful dialogue surrounding Afro-Caribbean beliefs in Jamaican society. Note: See attachment for Research Rationale in a proposal document. Introduction: Title: Exploring Changing Attitudes towards Afro-Caribbean Beliefs in Jamaica: A Study of Socio-Political, Religious, and Cultural Influences Introduction In Jamaica, there has historically been a negative perception towards African and indigenous spiritual practices, religious beliefs, customs, and faiths that draw influences from Urban Indian Heritage or African traditions. Rastafarianism, Obeah, Voodoo, Pocomania or pocco church, revivalists, and Muslim beliefs have often been marginalized, deemed as fringe, demonic, and unpopular, juxtaposed against the inherited traditions from European colonialism. The Judeo-Christian faith, such as Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, and evangelicalism, has been favored and considered closer to the truth and the ideal. However, in the 21st century, with increased exposure, awareness, critical thinking, and a more liberal lifestyle, particularly among the younger generation, it is crucial to investigate whether attitudes towards Afro-Caribbean beliefs are changing. This study aims to explore the shifting attitudes of Jamaicans and the factors contributing to these changes, considering demographics....The full study is available at ResearchGate: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/372364213_Exploring_Changing_Attitudes_towards_Afro-Caribbean_Beliefs_in_JamaicaCaribbean_A_Study_of_Socio-Political_Religious_and_Cultural_Influences Renaldo McKenzie is an Adjunct Professor at Jamaica Theological Seminary and has Lectured several courses including Caribbean Theology and Caribbean Thought, Apologetics, Christian History and Discipleship and Evangelism. The Potter Discussion: Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and the Wizarding World Fandom
In this episode we discuss some of the best Fred and George moments. Enjoy!Summary/Topics:· 1:58 “He's not Fred, I am!” This scene takes place in the first book in King's Cross station. This is a good display of banter between them, and this was one of the first examples we have of their characters. They aren't afraid of pulling someone's leg while making a joke. This establishes their place as the jokers of the family and puts them very close. It shows the closeness of the two.· 8:12 Gred and Forge. This scene takes place in the first Christmas as Hogwarts, showing that the twins like to tease Ron. They also know how make a good joke in passing, and the fleetingness comes across in the text. As we read, the words on the page become an image in our heads, and this scene is a fantastic example of their perfect comedic timing.· 13:16 Giving Filch a box of chocolate. Umbridge was getting close to the Dumbledore's Army, so Fred and George had to find a way to get Filch off the scent. They gave him a box of chocolates that turned out to be less than friendly.· 16:58 Fireworks. This is my favorite Fred and George moment. It is the ultimate spit in the face to Umbridge and timed perfectly. Umbridge gets what she deserves and the school gets a good show. They depart Hogwarts in style and make a mark. Even Flitwick was happy. That was the one moment where the teachers were thrilled to say that Fred and George were some of the worst trouble makers the school had ever seen.· 23:02 The Age Line. Dumbledore said no one should try and cross the age line that he drew around the Goblet of Fire. Fred and George took that as the perfect opportunity to do just that. The gold represented a leg up for their family and a chance to get back on top. They had a dream to open up a joke shop and begin making money for themselves. · 27:39 “But if we're not careful we'll have another Head Boy in the family. I don't think I could stand the shame.” This is exactly what we would expect one of them to say. The Head Boy stands for the Administration, everything that Fred and George try and take down. Everyone is 17 going on 18 - except Hermione who is already 18 as we join the story in late November 1997. Alternate universe - Voldemort died in 1981, but pureblood's still don't like muggleborns, the prejudice lives on in the older generations. Hermione Granger had excitedly returned with her two best friends - Harry and Ron - to Hogwarts for their final year of education, despite finding out over the summer before their 7th year that she would be Head Girl alongside this year's Head Boy, Slytherin Theodore Nott. While she hasn't really had any problems directly with Theodore, he is friends with Blaise Zabini and Draco Malfoy who have made her life a living hell for the past six year's of their schooling. Why did pureblood's have to be so bloody good looking on the surface, but so horrible underneath? We join Hermione three months in to her 7th year, where she has actually come to realise that the Slytherin's aren't actually that bad after se's been forced to spend time with the the three of them in the Head's dorm, until one evening, something happens that reveals one of her deepest secrets to the last person she wants it to be revealed to. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be taking a look at the how and why of Percy Weasley's estrangement from his family. To start with, Percy was not the--easiest--wizard to get along with. He was an incredibly ambitious, somewhat pompous young man, who had great admiration for authority. Percy was also incredibly dedicated to rising above his family's modest station in life, pursuing recognition and status through powerful employment. This, of course, includes his interests in becoming a prefect, Hogwarts' Head Boy in his final year at school, and an employee at the Ministry of Magic. As the third chi*ld of Arthur and Molly Weasley, Percy was very much a middle chi*ld--younger than both Bill and Charlie, and older than Fred, George, Ron and Ginny. Despite his great ambitions in life, he was--sadly for him--somewhat forgettable amidst all the chaos and vibrancy that filled the Weasley home. And while all that sensibly may have contributed to Percy feeling a little "left out" among his fellow family members, it certainly doesn't explain why he fell out with them completely. He was a gym rat who grew up playing in recreation leagues and on both the high school and college levels. But even he was shocked at the basketball-centric world he found himself in when he landed his first job as a coach as an assistant under Rick Rasmussen at Newton County in 2014. It was that mindset Jackson brought with him when he arrived at Social Circle as an assistant under Brian Anderson in 2017 to help turn around a program that had hit rock bottom. Social Circle hadn't advanced to state in five years, not even been close. During that stretch, they had a combined record of 23-99. Five years later, the Redskins find themselves 23-0 heading into the final week of the regular season and ranked No. 1 in the state in one prep poll. With a win over Washington-Wilkes last week, they secured the top seed in the Region 8-A Public tournament and a third consecutive berth in the state tournament. When Jackson took over in the next year, he inherited an uber-talented group of youngsters who not only had varsity experience but who understood and accepted the high expectations. Led by Branch and Reid, who averaged 20 and 15 points, respectively, the Redskins won 20 games. More importantly, they snapped a nine-year state tournament drought. Jackson doubled down last year, pushing his squad even harder and harping on every detail. That led to another key point in the Redskins rebuild. The Redskins went on to win 12 of their next 15 , including their first victory in the state tournament in over a decade. The momentum has carried over into this season in a big way. Social Circle has dominated its region, winning by an average of 34 points. In non-league action, the Redskins have 11 wins over teams in higher classifications. For the Social Circle boys basketball team, the heartbreak of losing to Drew Charter in overtime of the of the Class A public state semifinals Saturday night in Valdosta was compounded by the fact that they might actually have won. Ultimately, the game ended tied at 56 after regulation and the Redskins lost 70-66 after the first overtime period. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kevin-furtado/support

Today's guest is Phillip Morris. At the age of 27 he found himself, a young black man, divorced from the person he planned to spend the rest of his life with. In this episode, Phillip shares so openly how he'd grown up being the Head Boy at school, being the friend everyone expected to get married first and how he had to unpack a life of expectations to find out what he actually wanted. In this beautifully honest and vulnerable episode, he also brings a sense of lightness and reflection and shares how these experiences have shaped his relationship now. Phillip is a Theatre Director and has directed productions at theatres across the country including, the Royal Court Theatre, Young Vic, Soho Theatre and his latest production in German Theatre Redisenze Theatre. Some of his recent productions include ‘Sessions' at the Soho Theatre' about a young black man who wants to go to therapy before he's 30 and ‘Bitches' about 2 female Vloggers, who through the process discover the difference in their privilege. Phillip is also the Artistic Director of Trybe House which is a theatre company working closely with young black men in order to create a space for them to be able to express themselves. It's a privilege to end season 1 with Phillip's episode and I hope this speaks to your soul in the same way it did to mine. On the second episode of season 2, my good friend and brother, Billy Mirander stops by the show to speak about his journey and share his experiences. Billy and myself were student leaders formerly at the Old Harbour High School back home in Jamaica, where I served as Head Boy and Billy was deputy head boy. Billy's sudden rise to ministry gave him a platform where he developed into an international preacher and motivational speaker. He has preached the gospel all over the United States and was even featured twice on the American channel 3ABN where he shared his testimony and promoted his books. Mirander who's also an author has written two books which he shares in this interview information about them. Billy spoke about how he met his wife Abigail, and shared a funny story of how their courtship started which blossomed into a lovely marriage with a beautiful daughter Rachel. This was a very interesting interview as Billy who formerly lived a life or crime and violence turned his life around and became a leader of the Gospel! Enjoy this interview and God bless!!
