The Friday Workplace Briefing, hosted by Andrew Douglas and Karen Luu
We’re pleased to welcome Andrew Douglas back for his first Friday Workplace Briefing of the year, joined this week by Monnette Samo. The landscape of psychological injury claims within Australia’s workers’ compensation schemes is undergoing significant change. With NSW’s new Psychological Claims amendment now passed through Parliament — and other jurisdictions actively seeking to reduce the number of successful psychological claims — employers, insurers, and advisors must be prepared for a shifting regulatory environment. These developments signal a broader national trend toward reform, tighter thresholds, and increased scrutiny of workplace psychological injury claims. Understanding what has changed — and what may change next — is critical for managing risk, compliance, and workforce wellbeing effectively.Watch this week’s Friday Workplace Briefing Video here.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Buhre W, Díaz-Cambronero O, Schaefer S, et al.Safety and efficacy of 6 % hydroxyethyl starch in patients undergoing major surgery: The randomised controlled PHOENICS trial.European Journal of Anaesthesiology.

In Episode 3 "Pharmaceutical preventative measures" of the series "How to prevent anxiety in children undergoing urological procedures", MSc. Gülhan Karaöz-Bulut (NL) and Dr. M. İrfan Dönmez (TR) discuss how medications can support anxiety reduction in paediatric urological care. They begin by emphasising that sedation should not be a goal on its own but part of a broader, child-centred strategy aimed at preventing trauma and building trust. The episode reviews several commonly used agents - nitrous oxide, midazolam, dexmedetomidine, clonidine and ketamine - with clear explanations of their benefits, limitations, and suitability for different procedures. The speakers provide guidance on how each medication affects the child's experience, with practical considerations such as onset time, duration, side effects and how they may impact diagnostic results. Special attention is given to the impact of sedatives on urodynamic studies, highlighting where certain agents (like dexmedetomidine or ketamine) may alter bladder function. They also address administration methods, such as intranasal and oral routes, and the importance of planning around food intake and hydration.Throughout, the discussion underscores that medication should be tailored to the individual child and procedure, always supported by experienced clinical staff. The episode closes with a strong reminder that safe and effective sedation enhances both procedural success and the child's well-being.*See references and additional research information hereFor more EAU podcasts, please go to your favourite podcast app and subscribe to our podcast channel for regular updates: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, EAU YouTube channel.
This study examined outcomes of patients with atrial fibrillation treated with pulsed field ablation (PFA) and found a notably high incidence of phrenic nerve injury during the procedure. Most injuries were transient, but some persisted beyond the immediate peri-procedural period, raising concerns about long-term safety. The findings highlight the need for refined techniques and monitoring strategies to mitigate phrenic nerve injury risk with PFA. Please join host Michael S. Lloyd, MD, FHRS as he discusses the finding of this study with his guests Andrea M. Russo, MD, FHRS and Birju Rao, MD, Msci in Atlanta at the HRX Live 2025 conference. IRMA was never just another B-school. Born out of Verghese Kurien's (the father of Operation Flood movement) mind, it built a one-of-a-kind management program for rural India—training managers for cooperatives, NGOs, and grassroots institutions, far away from the IIM playbook. Now, Delhi has other plans. An Act of Parliament is folding IRMA into a vast new central university, the "Tribhuvan" Sahkari University, with hundreds of affiliates. On paper, it's about scaling cooperative education nationwide. But the shift is sparking anxiety over placements, faculty, and whether Kurien's vision will survive in a system built for size.Tune in.Compete in India's first and only case competition.Daybreak is produced from the newsroom of The Ken, India's first subscriber-only business news platform. In Episode 2, “Non-pharmaceutical preventative measures" of the series "How to prevent anxiety in children undergoing urological procedures", Dr. Lisette ‘t Hoen (NL) and Dr. Sofie Schilling (NL) discuss how thoughtful, non-medication-based approaches can significantly ease procedural anxiety in children. Drawing from their experience at the Erasmus MC - Sophia Children's Hospital, they share the importance of assessing each child's age, emotional needs and prior medical experiences to tailor supportive care. The conversation highlights the critical role of communication - not only with children but also with their families - as a foundation for trust and reassurance. The speakers explain how giving children a sense of control, even in small choices, helps reduce anxiety and increase cooperation. They present a range of effective tools, including bubble play, search-and-find books, stress toys and virtual reality headsets, each adapted to the child's developmental stage.Particular attention is given to cognitive distraction techniques that actively engage a child's attention, leaving less mental space for fear. The episode also addresses what can be done during emergencies or at night when child life specialists are unavailable - emphasising that even small, simple gestures by clinical staff can have a big impact. Finally, the discussion turns to newborns, often overlooked in anxiety prevention. The speakers explain how skin-to-skin contact, pacifiers, breastfeeding, and glucose water can all contribute to a calmer, less stressful experience, even in the earliest stages of life. This episode offers highly practical insights for anyone involved in paediatric urological care - underscoring that anxiety prevention can often be achieved with empathy, creativity and the right non-pharmaceutical tools. For more EAU podcasts, please go to your favourite podcast app and subscribe to our podcast channel for regular updates: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, EAU YouTube channel.

Since the Buddha's time, certain practitioners have chosen to leave the household life to dedicate themselves completely to formal Buddhist training. Undergoing a ceremony of ordination in which they took monastic vows, these monks and nuns lived the remainder of their lives within a Sangha – community – of other ordained people. In modern Western Zen, you will find a thoroughly confusing situation where ordained people who live fully monastic lives are rare, most ordained people are called “priests” and live householder lives, and practitioners who are not ordained often teach the Dharma and lead lay Sanghas (functions historically reserved for ordained people). What is the use – if any – of continuing with a tradition of “ordination?” I discuss the value of monks, priests, and lay practitioners in the context of Zen as it is currently manifesting in the United States.
"Is the fear of anesthesia keeping you from getting the surgery you want?"For many patients, it's not the scalpel they fear—it's the idea of “going under.” In this must-hear episode of Plastic Surgery Uncensored, Dr. Rady Rahban teams up with his long-time anesthesiologist, Dr. Houston, to answer the most common—and most misunderstood—questions about anesthesia. From the myths surrounding “twilight” sedation to the truth about general anesthesia safety, they unpack exactly what happens before, during, and after you're asleep. What you'll learn in this episode:The three main types of anesthesia—local, twilight/conscious sedation, and general—and when each is truly appropriate. Why “twilight is safer” isn't the whole truth (and when it can actually be riskier). The inside story on nausea prevention—how a layered, multi-drug approach makes recovery smoother. What you should always ask about your anesthesiologist's credentials—and why team chemistry in the OR can save lives. How new medications like Ozempic can affect anesthesia safety and timing. The reality about rare fears like “waking up during surgery” or being “awake but paralyzed.”Why general anesthesia is far safer today than most people think, especially in healthy patients in accredited facilities. Why this episode matters:Anesthesia is the co-pilot of your surgery. The best surgical result means nothing without safety at every step. This episode arms you with the exact questions and knowledge to make sure your anesthesia care is as exceptional as your surgical care. If you've ever delayed surgery out of fear, or you know someone who has, this is the conversation that could change their mind—and keep them safe.Share this with a friend, leave a review if you learned something new, and drop your anesthesia questions for a future Q&A.

On today's episode I'm joined by a long time friend and cycling buddy of mine, Kerry Snow. Kerry was our 2nd place East Texas Showdown in the women's category and was 10th overall. While an impressive accomplishment on its own, Kerry's effort was even more incredible considering that she is undergoing chemotherapy for stage 2 breast cancer. Determined to not let cancer dictate her life, she has continued to maintain an active lifestyle by working out, riding her bike, and even competing in the 400 mile East Texas Showdown this last March. Along her way she raised money for a local non-profit, BCS Fights Cancer, and was able to raise over $15,000 for this organization alongside her friend and riding partner Maegan Fitzgerald. Kerry and I live in the same town and have been riding bikes together for longer than I can remember. I know her to be a physically and mentally strong rider and I credit her with being one of the people who inspired me to get into bikepacking. It was a true pleasure to have her on the podcast. Could your body shrink a brain tumor by half before surgery? Taylor Dukes is proof that it is possible. In this episode, Taylor shares her journey from medical mission trips in Africa to discovering a plum-sized brain tumor in her frontal lobe with no symptoms, which offers invaluable wisdom for anyone navigating their own health challenges.
