Taking a break from the busy calving season to join us on this week's Young Stock Podcast is Kate Fitzgerald. From a young age, Kate had a passion for livestock and farming. She would run home from school to help her father on their suckler farm outside Dungarvan. Unfortunately, her father passed away from suicide in 2017, which meant they had to make the hard decision to sell out the herd. At the age of 21, Kate got the cows ready for the sale and took on a full-time job in the local factory to support her family. We discuss her return to farming and why she decided to leave her full-time job to come into the farm enterprise with her husband, Shane and his father, John. She talks about completing the Teagasc green-cert in Kildalton and how she found the distant learning course. Being a woman in the sector, we talk about speaking up in discussion groups and the importance of having your say. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
ePower is to supply over 20 shopping centres across 14 counties nationwide with high speed EV charging points, following a partnership agreement with Lanthorn, which manages a portfolio of over €1.6bn of property throughout Ireland. Rollout will begin in 2025, and the sites where chargers will be installed include Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway, as well as busy urban areas like Navan, Dundalk, Mullingar, Athlone, Maynooth, Portlaoise and Kilkenny. ?ePower is working closely with Lanthorn in association with their project managers, KSNPM. ePower has been selected following a competitive process, which took into account the company's ability to offer high speed charging facilities, tailored specifically to each site, and crucially, the assurance that the sites would be maintained and serviced by ePower's 24/7 help desk, field engineering and remote management. Commenting on the development, John O'Keeffe, CEO of Power, said: "We're very proud to be part of the drive towards making electric vehicles a better choice for consumers. The rollout and delivery of chargers, be it through public or private partnerships, is key to this. Through this partnership with Lanthorn, ePower plans to have super-fast chargers installed at shopping centres around Ireland, from Donegal to Cork and many places in between; it's a great expansion for us in what's been a hugely successful year of growth." It's been a busy year for ePower; the company recently joined forces with Dublin's local authorities to bring online up to 200 fast chargers across the region in 2025. The initial phase of the project will see ePower's high-speed chargers installed at more than 40 Dublin locations across the four Dublin local authorities. The company also won six of 17 government contracts for the rollout of new high-speed electric car charging hubs across Ireland, due to be operational by the end of 2025. Journalist Aisling Moloney brings us along on her move to Australia and tries to find out why thousands of young people from across Ireland are making the move Down Under. The 28-year-old from Dungarvan in Co Waterford emigrated to Sydney in 2024, after several years of living and working in Dublin as a journalist with RTÉ and as Political Correspondent with the Irish Daily Mail.At the beginning of her journey, she meets a busker at Byron Bay, born to Irish parents who left for Australia's sunny shores in the 1960s. Fintan, the musician grew up on a hippie commune. Aisling then speaks to young people on the Rainbow Walkway on Coogee Beach in Sydney about the draw of Australia and their experience of life in Sydney. After hearing about how living so far away from home can be hard for many, she speaks to Central Coast GAA Club and visits 'The Doss House' and 'Frank Macs' where Irish gather in search of that feeling of home. She then makes the trip to Perth to visit her sister Eimear, who has lived there for 13 years and is married with three children. In the second part of this documentary, Aisling hears about some of the more difficult aspects of Australia, which include the experience of regional work and the difficulty of finding work in general. She also hears some stories of reinvention, how some people make the move to earn big bucks, and how people deal with bereavement while living so far away from home.We also get a taste of that lifestyle that people love in Australia, and come along to two of Aisling's favourite activities since arriving in Sydney, swimming and beach yoga."Home or Away - Living the Irish Australian Dream with Aisling Moloney" is presented and produced by Aisling Moloney. FuturEnergy Ireland has submitted a planning application to An Bord Pleanála for Scart Mountain Wind Farm. The renewable energy project is located approximately 4km northeast of Cappoquin in Co. Waterford. The wind farm planning application, which includes 15 turbines, a 110kV substation and ancillary works, was made by Futurenergy Scart Mountain DAC on behalf of FuturEnergy Ireland, a joint venture company formed by Coillte and ESB. The company is also submitting a planning application for the grid connection route for the Scart Mountain project in the coming weeks, which comprises 16km of cabling to the existing Dungarvan substation. Scart Mountain Wind Farm would support the local economy by contributing annual rates and providing a Community Benefit Fund. If consented and constructed as designed, the project would contribute a minimum of €540,000 per annum to a Community Benefit Fund for 15 years and a further €270,000 per annum for the operational lifetime of the wind farm. The 'lifetime' fund is an exclusive FuturEnergy Ireland initiative that brings the total contribution to the local area to approximately €12 million during the operational period. Annual local authority rates contributions are estimated at more than €0.5m per annum, while the construction period would support up to 100 jobs with two or three long-term technical employees required. Scart Mountain Wind Farm has the potential to combat climate change by contributing towards the national target of producing 80% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. If approved and constructed as proposed, it would save between 61,350 tonnes and 77,694 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Ireland spends €1 million an hour buying fossil fuels from other countries. This enormous sum of money is urgently needed in other areas such as housing and healthcare, education and employment. Projects such as Scart Mountain Wind Farm have the capacity to strengthen our energy independence and security of supply by providing clean, homegrown electricity, which will also lower fuel bills. Emer Campbell, Project Manager at FuturEnergy Ireland, says: "This planning application marks an important milestone in our commitment to delivering renewable energy solutions that support Ireland's transition to a more sustainable future. "If you consider that a single rotation of one turbine would power a typical home for 12 to 16 hours, Scart Mountain Wind Farm has the potential to contribute significantly to national renewable energy targets. The project would also create local opportunities through a substantial community benefit fund, local rates payments and employment." Planning documents will be available to view at http://www.scartmountainplanning.ie, on An Bord Pleanála's website at www.pleanala.ie and in the office of Waterford County Council. The deadline for submissions has been extended by nine days to allow for the Christmas period. For more information about this project, please visit www.scartmountainwindfarm.ie. This website also provides access to a Virtual Exhibition, which includes detailed project information and photomontages that show the proposed turbines.
In this final full episode of Series Eight, host Andrew Martin meets Irish genealogist, speaker, occasional podcaster, and Project Infant founder, Daniel Loftus. He asks Daniel how he got hooked on researching his family history, challenges he's faced with DNA testing and adoption, and why he's leading a project that brings Mother and Baby Homes in Ireland under the spotlight. If you'd like to volunteer for Project Infant, you can do so at: https://projectinfant.ie/volunteerTHE LIFE STORY - PATRICK WHELAN Daniel has chosen to tell the life story of his Great Grandfather Patrick ‘Pax' Whelan, who was born to Patrick (known as ‘Patsy') and his wife Bridget in 1890 in the coastal town of Dungarvan, in County Waterford, Ireland. Sadly though, Bridget died when Pax was aged 8, and his youngest sister was just one month old. With tensions building in Ireland and in World War One, Pax's brother Michael enlisted in the British Army… but to Pax – who'd joined the local branch of the Irish Republican Army, this was unacceptable and the brothers ceased speaking for decades.Whilst Pax didn't really speak of his time in the Army, Daniel has managed to find sources in museums and archives that help tell the story of his Great Grandfather.THE BRICK WALL - PATRICK LAVIN and ANN BRENNAN A vanishing act in the 20th Century is what is causing Daniel to collide with a Brick Wall – he's looking for information on Patrick Lavin (or Lavan) and wife Ann Brennan.Daniel doesn't know much about this couple, but he has found that Patrick was born circa 1854, and Mary Brennan circa 1861.The couple married in January 1882 and remained around the area of Kiltimagh, County Mayo, in Ireland, and had a family of six daughters between 1882 and 1893.However, Daniel is stuck with trying to find much about their parents. He knows Patrick's father was alive in 1882 and also called Patrick, but that Ann's father John had died. The last time Daniel has found Patrick and Ann in the records is on the 1911 census – and then they just vanish!Where did Patrick and Ann go after 1911?If you think that you have a research idea or clue that can help Daniel to overcome his brick wall, then you can find him via the links at his Carrd profile or drop him a message on Bluesky or Twitter. Alternatively, you can send us a message via our contact form and we'll pass your message on.In the meantime, Daniel accepts Andrew's offer of help, but will he agree to an important errand too?- - -Episode Credits:Andrew Martin - Host and ProducerDaniel Loftus - GuestJohn Spike - Sándor PetőfiThank you for listening! Rath National School and Holy Family were involved in a dramatic encounter as Round 2 of the LaoisToday Schools QuizCast got underway. This was a winner takes all clash with the loser out for this year and the victor into Round 3. And with everything on the line, the sides produced a stunning battle that had, after another stewards inquiry, to be decided by a tiebreak. Rath were once again represented by Michael Behan, Aoife Murphy and Michael Nolan while Holy Family shuffled their pack. In came Carrie Gorman, Alex Korovesi and Dylan Lawlor who performed brilliantly. We initially thought that Holy Family had won but then realised that we had incorrectly marked an answer that Rath gave as wrong. We thought Dungarvan was the county town of Waterford but it turns out - surprise, surprise - the children know more than us! Prior to the merger of Waterford County Council with Waterford City Council in 2014, Dungarvan WAS the county town and administrative centre of County Waterford - but that is now Waterford City which Rath NS said. A tiebreaker was quickly arranged and Rath came through.

One third of Wyvern Lingo, Caoi De Barra released her debut solo EP Thicket at the end of summer 2022 after the Choice-nominated band announced they were going on hiatus earlier in the year. Fresh off a European and UK tour playing drums with the Grammy-nominated Allison Russell, Caoimhe talks about her new single Treehouse and her second scooter tour of Ireland. Treehouse is about the housing crisis, which De Barra says leaves her feeling trapped in a perpetual state of adolescence, where the concept of being a self-sufficient artist seems as lofty as building a dwelling up a tree - “It's really letting my petulant inner child do the problem solving”, she says. Speaking about the scooter tour, De Barra says “Exploring the backroads, towns and villages of Ireland on my 125 cc scooter feels extremely peaceful and enriching to me. Less practical than a car, but low on fuel usage, and almost as romantic as travelling on horseback. On top of that I have the privilege of performing my songs for people in the places I go to, immediately immersed in the local arts scene. The scooter tour for me is the perfect solo quest.” Tour dates: FRANKS PLACE, WEXFORD, July 13 IMMA GARDEN PARTY, DUBLIN, July 15 LIVE AT 1868, DUNGARVAN, July 16 WOODFIELD CAFE, BIRR, July 20 POPPY LANE SESSIONS, KINVARA, July 21 POT DUGGANS, ENNISTYMON, July 22 COUGHLANS, CORK, July 23 PRIMS BOOKSHOP, KINSALE, July 26 DE BARRA'S, CLONAKILTY, July 27 ST MICHAEL'S CHURCH, WATERVILLE, July 30 DOLAN'S, LIMERICK, Aug 2 THE GREEN ROOM, DINGLE, Aug 3 ARUNDELS BY THE PIER, AHAKISTA, Aug 9 MONROES, GALWAY, Aug 11 THE MUSIC LOOM, KILLYBEGS, Aug 12 THE HARBOUR BAR, BRAY, Aug 17 THE FUMBALLY, DUBLIN, Aug 18 Tour dates + ticket links: https://campsite.bio/caoidebarra Buy Caoi De Barra - Treehouse at her Bandcamp page: https://caoidebarra.bandcamp.com/

jQuery(document).ready(function(){ cab.clickify(); }); Original Podcast with clickable words https://tinyurl.com/2ewfycyn Contact: irishlingos@gmail.com Bets in Waterford have fallen due to the report. Fuarlaigh geallta i bPort Láirge de bharr an rabharta. It appears that some areas of Waterford may be left under water this evening and tomorrow morning due to the heavy spring rain. Dealraítear go mb'fhéidir bhfágfaí ceantair áirithe i bPort Láirge faoi uisce tráthnóna inniu agus ar maidin amárach mar gheall ar rabharta mór an earraigh. Waterford City and County Council is appealing for people to stay away from the shores or the river will recede. Tá Comhairle Cathrach agus Contae Phort Láirge ag achainí ar dhaoine fuireach ó na cladaí nó go gcúlóidh an rabharta. There is a risk, it is said, that the top will be washed onto the shores in places without shelter. Tá an baol ann, a deirtear, go dtonnfaidh an barr láin isteach ar na cladaí in áiteanna gan foscadh. The local authority has put up barriers in the city and in the Passage in Waterford harbor to keep the river out. Tá bacainní curtha suas sa chathair agus sa Phasáiste i gcuan Phort Láirge ag an údarás áitiúil leis an rabharta a choinneáil amach. The same advice has been given to people in Dungarvan, where car parks near the sea have already been closed. Tá an chomhairle chéanna curtha ar dhaoine i nDún Garbhán, mar a bhfuil carrchlóis in aice na farraige dúnta cheana féin. The story also concerns the city of Cork and the local authority there says that there may be flooding around the lowest piers in the city center from now until Thursday. Baineann an scéal le cathair Chorcaí chomh maith agus deir an t-údarás áitiúil ansin go mb'fhéidir go mbeadh tuilte thart ar na céanna is ísle i lár na cathrach as seo go Déardaoin. Met Éireann has also issued a yellow rain warning for the people of Kerry. Tá fógra buí báistí tugtha ag Met Éireann do mhuintir Chiarraí leis. A wet and windy evening is promised in the county, especially in mountain areas. Tráthnóna uisciúil agus gaofar atá geallta sa chontae, go háirithe i gceantair sléibhe. We are very excited to share with you the first in a series we are calling WIBS On the Run. My wife and I were lucky enough to get to travel to Ireland this past September and thru our friends at The Beer Ladies podcast we were able to meet up with Claire Dalton of Dungarveen Brewing Co in County Waterford. She gave us a tour of the facilities along with a taste right out of the barrel of a special collab they are doing with Blackwater Distilling who are local to that area as well. I do have to apologize for the quality of the audio and the choppy nature of the edits on this episode This was the first time I recorded “in the wild” and I certainly have a lot to learn, the main one is to shut my own dang mouth and let the guest speak! Claire and I were also joined by my wife Laurel and my very great Irish friend of 25+ years Aisling you will hear them both on this recording as well. Kilkerrin/Clonberne's Ladies Senior Footballers are through to the All-Ireland Final following an impressive 2-10 to 0-2 win over Ballymacarbry from Waterford in Dungarvan this afternoon. They will play either Donoghmoyne or Kilmacud Crokes in the All-Ireland Final on December 10th Here is the commentary of their win with Darren Kelly
As life goes on as normal in busy Ballinroad in Dungarvan, Co Waterford, one of the area's most interesting characters is no longer part of the daily grind. Catherine O'Brien is now a wanted woman, with gardai and people who believe they were conned by her trying to find her.Neighbours tell of people turning up at her door to find her, while victims tell stories of how the trust she earned from them was abused. So who is Catherine O'Brien and why do gardai want to talk to her? Read on to find out how the one-time florist got involved in the pub trade, the veterinary business and the horse industry, while persuading new friends that she was an expert in legal matters. She was a business woman with connections including a link to the Vatican. She drove only the best vehicles. But Catherine the Fake tells a tale of someone who leaves a trail of destruction in her wake. See how she grabbed the attention of the Criminal Assets Bureau and hear how she is remembered as being as slippery as an eel, managing to evade law enforcement as well as those who were once close to her. Catherine O'Brien was not only a financial fraudster but also a romance fraudster. Find out how she conned her lover out of €20,000 and tried to ensure his family signed a contract which asked that they would not “conduct any drive bys” of his house while she was there.Despite a relationship which appeared to be blossoming, this was one built on suspicion, suspense and intrigue and did not promise a happy-ever-after. But it brought a new playground for Catherine, with new friends to impress and new people to inveigle into business plans, with her focus switching from floristry to veterinary thanks to her new connections in Co Clare. She told her newfound friends of having bought a pub in west Clare, and advertised positions for the venue – but the jobs did not exist because she had not made the purchase. However, she had prestige as a business woman who had a home in Dungarvan and connections which secured corporate boxes in Croke Park. She was someone who appeared to have it all.But did she have it all? Who was this woman who had infiltrated the social scene in west Clare and earned the trust of people who later regretted having met her? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It's summer and while brown trout anglers might be taking a hiatus and salmon anglers complain of low rivers, these summer months are an opportunity to escape to the ocean in pursuit of a different type of silver – that of the sea bass. Jason O'Riordan is a well known Dungarvan-based angler and guide with Mackenzie who throws a fly at pretty much anything that swims, including bass around the famous Copper Coast and he joins us on this week's show to tell us more about the bass and how to catch them.Don't forget to rate, review and follow the Ireland on the Fly podcast on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts from. It's a football show this week as we look back on some of the big results of the weekend. Schedule: 0:00 - Emer Flaherty (Galway 1-12 Mayo 1-8 - Connacht SFC Final) 15:50 - Ger McCarthy (Cork 4-10 Waterford 1-12 - Munster SFC Semi-Final) 33:00 - Clare Owens, Hugh Donnelly, Ollie Lennon (Leitrim 1-14 Roscommon 0-14 - Connacht IFC Final) Darren Kelly was in Tuam Stadium on Sunday to watch the Connacht Finals and was joined after the senior game by Galway 2004 All-Ireland winner Emer Flaherty. They look at Galway's fourth consecutive provincial title and where do Galway and Mayo go next. Cork journalist Ger McCarthy was in Dungarvan for the 'Dawn of a New Era' in Cork as Shane Ronayne took charge of his first championship game. The Rebelettes hit four goals to remind the country they are still contenders but where does this result leave Waterford leading into the summer? And finally, we go back to Tuam where Darren gets reaction from the Connacht intermediate final. Leitrim successfully retained the title with Leah Fox's goal the difference. We hear from Leitrim captain Clare Owens, manager Hugh Donnelly and Roscommon boss Ollie Lennon. Season 2: The Great Weird North Episode 1: New Brunswick New Brunswick is one of the four OG provinces that formed Canada on July 1, 1867. In this episode, we tell you all about the legend of the Dungarvan Whooper. This is just one of the many tales from the lumber camps that dotted the forests of NB in the 1800s but is this one true? Some folks are certainly convinced it is … or they choose to err cautiously so they do not accidentally taunt the Whooper. We then tell a very real story of sabotage from WWI. Maybe the cold Canadian winter was our best ally in this plot of international intrigue. Warning: some language or themes may not be suitable for all ages.
