Fishing is more than just a sport. It is a way of connecting with nature, getting some fresh air and exercise, and spending time with friends and family. The impact of fishing extends beyond the personal benefits it provides, and it has far-reaching implications for conservation and the economy. In this podcast episode, Gabriella MaGrath talks about her experience starting a fishing club at USF St. Petersburg. The club has seen increased participation and funding, and they hope to incorporate more volunteer opportunities and hands-on fishing opportunities in the future as Kendall Barker, my other guest this week, takes over as President. St. Petersburg is famous for its variety of fishing, and having a fishing club allows students to learn and participate. The club has made it a point to make their initiative inclusive, welcoming, and education-based. Experienced members teach beginners and learn from one another, making fishing more than just something to do over the weekend. These ladies encourage listeners to start similar initiatives at their schools and colleges to promote fishing as a fun and accessible sport for all. They also emphasize the importance of conservation and maintaining sustainability in the industry. By increasing the participation of college students and young people in fishing, we can secure funding for conservation efforts through the sale of fishing licenses. Listen to the episode to learn more about Fish Donkey App and how it is revolutionizing the fishing industry. You'll also hear about the club's upcoming expansion plans, including more facets such as freshwater fishing. With its recreational and economic benefits, fishing remains a key activity for individuals and communities alike. The fishing club featured in this episode is an excellent example of how a small initiative can attract enthusiasts, promote sustainability, and grow the industry. Timestamped Overview: [00:00:00] Building a foundation for a fishing club takes more work but yields benefits, including funding and membership. Welcome to the Woman Angler and Adventurer podcast. [00:03:44] Clubs organize fishing trips and educational events to assist experienced anglers and newcomers. [00:05:02] Club hosts a virtual summer fishing tournament with prizes from sponsors. The club aims for education, and newcomers may potentially become a competitive team. [00:09:04] A group of students started a fishing club, recruited officers, gained around 50 new members at a recruitment event, and now has 80 members overall. [00:10:31] Kendall joined fishing trips with male officers, promoting males and females alike and helpfulness. [00:12:47] Creating an inclusive and educational fishing club required more work but resulted in a strong foundation, more members, and funding. This approach was chosen because many people in St. Pete come from different areas and need guidance on how to fish in the area. The goal is to welcome and get more people into the angling community. [00:17:44] Club aims to include freshwater fishing and requires members to have appropriate licenses. [00:19:01] Fish handling and conservation practices were taught at the seminar and applied on the water with experienced officers. [00:19:31] New fishing club at USF St. Pete has seen significant interest and funding for college students and plans to incorporate more volunteer opportunities and participate in a high school tournament. Plans include more trips. Mentioned in this Episode: USF St. Petersburg St. Pete Fishing Outfitters Fish Donkey Takemefishing.org Bobby Lane Cup Support Our Partners! Rick Horrow is an expert of Sports Law, and in fact he pioneered the field. He also blazed a trail for public/private partnerships to fund development of stadiums, arenas, performing arts venues and other infrastructure. Then to top that off he developed the framework for selling naming rights to those structures. He's done over 100 deals worth more than $20 billion in branding concepts that have enticed more than $4 billion in corporate funding to cities and development projects.I tell you all this to say....Rick knows how to make a deal. Whether you are an aspiring pro angler or exploring a new job or role in the fishing industry, negotiating skills are important. Many times I hear people express fear over the negotiating process but if you take a little time to learn the basics of negotiation you will feel more confident when it's time to come to the table to make a deal.I met Rick 12 years ago when I was one of the producers on his television show The Sports Take. That show isn't on the air anymore but you can see Rick on CNN, ESPN, Fox and many other networks whenever there is a story about the business side of sports and the networks need an expert. They call in the big gun - Rick Horrow.I thought Rick would be a great person for you to hear from on 3 Negotiating Skills Everyone Can Develop. Rick has literally written the book on Sports Business and you'll find out more about that in this episode.CONNECT WITH RICK HORROWhttps://twitter.com/RickHorrowhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1044502904Rick's BookThe Sport Business Handbookhttps://www.amazon.com/Sport-Business-Handbook-Insights-Industry/dp/1492543101/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=rick+horrow&qid=1621525128&sr=8-1Subscribe to my YouTube channel here:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJ8kGwfaUSdjND1act7kZjA?If you're starting out, don't forget how important it is to build you brand. Gary Morgenstern is an expert on content and how to figure out what kind of content your audience wants to consume. He has worked in television programming for the entirety of his decades long career. I worked with him when he was director of programming for ESPN Outdoors and his current role is Senior Vice President of Programming for SportsNet New York.In many ways our social media is like our own personal TV network. We make decisions every time we create content & those decisions are not unlike what TV network programming executives decide in their roles. Whether you are an aspiring pro angler, a brand or manufacturer or just an individual who cares about your reputation, you decide what content you share and how you express your (brand) voice. So I thought it would be beneficial for all of us to hear how a highly successful television network programming executive made decisions about what content to program. With the cost of television airtime in the figures with many, many zeros, there is a lot at stake for them. They have to be extremely smart and well prepared to make those choices. Listen to this conversation as if you were the programming director of your own personal channel because you know what? You are!We can all learn a lot from Gary Morgenstern and we're lucky he's so generous in sharing his insight. I bet we all like to think we have a good plan laid out for the next 10, 20, or even 30 years or more. But sometimes things change. Happy, successful people know how to adjust their sails and ride the tide of changes. Our guest today is one of those people. Sean Lawless is a career firefighter in Tulsa, OK who was living in this dream home with his wife after having successfully raised their kids. They both thought they would spend their next years working in Tulsa and then retire there. But a trip to Florida changed all that. Sean and his wife realized they wouldn't really be truly happy unless they lied by the coast. Sean fell in love with fishing and started thinking about how he could earn income in retirement and still spend time on the water. What happened the next 5 years is a story that might inspire you. Sean figured out how to start a Youtube channel on saltwater fishing while living in the heartland in landlocked Oklahoma. The Lawless Tide has led him to many new friendships and opportunities. So much so that he is now planning to start a guide business in the Florida panhandle. In fact by the time you listen to this, he may already be there. This is a good story of American ingenuity, grit and determination. Just my kind of tale.If you enjoy this episode, find Sean at the links below.
