DisruptED

The traditional residential college experience is transforming. Driven by rising costs, declining enrollment, and student demand for flexibility, small private colleges are rethinking their academic models. A 2022 McKinsey & Company survey found that 65% of higher education students want aspects of their learning experience to remain virtual, even post-pandemic. This shift signals a growing appetite for hybrid environments that blend campus life with scalable online access. What does a hybrid future look like for small colleges, and can it preserve the heart of the campus experience while offering students more?On DisruptED, guest host Darin Francis, the CEO at Harbinger Lane Consulting, welcomes Charlie Anastasi, the VP at Rize Education. Anastasi explains how his team is guiding colleges through the shift toward hybrid learning. Speaking from the ASU+GSV Summit, he describes how Rize partners with over 100 institutions, including many residential colleges, to collaboratively deliver online programs that broaden academic offerings, boost enrollment, and improve career outcomes.Key TakeawaysRize enables small colleges to launch high-demand programs like cybersecurity by sharing core online courses across institutions.Students retain the in-person residential experience while gaining access to new majors that would otherwise be cost-prohibitive to launch individually.Rize partners report a fivefold return on investment through increased enrollment and strong student satisfaction with hybrid course offerings.Charlie Anastasi is Vice President of Revenue and Academic Partnerships at RizeEducation, where he leads institutional growth strategies that expand access to affordable, career-aligned programs. He previously served in leadership roles at Adrian College and CADRE, bridging higher education innovation with strategic development. Earlier in his career, he worked in real estate private equity at Blackstone, bringing strong financial and operational expertise to the education sector.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of racial justice and faith intersections, and wondering how to truly make a difference, then you are not alone! The struggle to understand the historical context and apply it to modern-day challenges can be daunting. Here's the good stuff for Friday, October 27.In the U23 World Championships in Tirana, Albania, Kennedy Blades and Audrey Jimenez from the United States earned silver medals in women's freestyle wrestling. Blades dominated her initial matches but lost 9-2 in the finals against UWW's Reetika in the 76 kg category. Jimenez, competing in the 50 kg category, withdrew from her finals match due to injury but still secured a silver medal. Amit Elor, another U.S. wrestler, advanced to the finals in the 72 kg category, pinning her first two opponents. She will face Jyoti Berwal in the finals, aiming for another U23 championship. Meanwhile, Macey Kilty will compete for a bronze medal in the 65 kg category after a strong start but a narrow 5-4 loss in the semifinals against Irina Ringaci. Xochitl Mota-Pettis is also in the hunt for a bronze medal in the 57 kg category, thanks to her first-round opponent advancing to the finals. The U.S. Greco-Roman team will begin their competition on Friday, featuring wrestlers like Phillip Moomey and Robert Perez III.Carter Starocci has announced his return to Penn State for the 2023-24 wrestling season, aiming to become the Nittany Lions' first four-time NCAA champion. Starocci, who recently won his third NCAA title at 174 pounds, also hinted at a potential Olympic run in the 2024 Summer Games. He has the nation's longest active winning streak with 52 straight bouts and is Penn State's sixth three-time champion. The University of Oklahoma announced that its wrestling program will remain in the Big 12 Conference as an affiliate member, even as the university transitions to the Southeastern Conference in 2024. The decision followed a vote by the Big 12's governance group, which includes university presidents and athletic directors. Oklahoma's wrestling program has a storied history, with seven national championships and 24 conference titles, including three in the Big 12 era. Starting July 1, 2024, the Big 12 wrestling membership will feature legacy programs like Iowa State and Oklahoma State, as well as affiliate programs such as Air Force and Missouri. Arizona State will also join as a newcomer in 2024. Iowa wrestling is gearing up for its season debut on November 4 against California Baptist, amid a turbulent offseason and pending NCAA decisions on sports-wagering penalties. Hawkeye coach Tom Brands praised the NCAA for its deliberative approach and emphasized that the athletes facing suspensions have been accountable. The vote on sports-wagering penalties is set for November 8, and Brands is hopeful for a decision that "fits the crime." Abe Assad and Nelson Brands are currently facing NCAA suspensions related to sports gambling and are likely to miss the season's first dual. Both athletes have criticized the NCAA and are awaiting the Division I Council's vote. While other Iowa wrestlers are also believed to be facing suspensions, Assad and Nelson Brands are the only ones to have spoken publicly about the issue. The National Wrestling Coaches Association has released its NCAA Women's Wrestling Preseason Coaches' Poll, with defending national champion North Central College leading the pack. North Central tops the preseason rankings for the second consecutive year, boasting 128 points and 13 ranked individuals, including seven who are ranked No. 1. McKendree is in third place with 60 points and nine ranked wrestlers, while Colorado Mesa is fourth with 51 points and eight ranked individuals. Sacred Heart and Gannon round out the top six, with 29 and undisclosed points respectively, each having four ranked individuals. East Stroudsburg, Lock Haven University, and the University of Iowa are also in the top 10, along with Adrian College. - Menlo College leads the NAIA Women's Wrestling Preseason Top 20, followed by Life University, Grand View, William Penn, and Providence to kick off the 2023-24 women's wrestling season. Reigning national champion Southern Oregon starts the new season ranked sixth. That business is a commercial cleaning company. Eller says he is more focused on finances + working to find the happy medium between growth and building the best product. In addition, we touch on how companies get into trouble when they overextend or hire too fast.On a brighter note, it's translated to the Eller family business getting more looks. He shares a “recent grace” of reflecting on the saintly life of a priest friend who recently passed away. (08:50) Vocation Story — Fr. Jeff shares that he first thought of the priesthood as a child. As he grew up, he felt being a priest was “fourth on my list.” He was an altar server as a child. Following studying at Adrian College, he did an initial discernment of the priesthood, but didn't feel he should move forward in discerning. He worked in sales for several years. He began dating a young woman and enjoyed his life. At his office, he joined a prayer group, and started attending daily Mass. Some five years after his initial discernment, Fr. Jeff began discerning the priesthood again and revisited the seminary. (23:23) Two discernments and the role of peace — Fr. Jeff shares that in his second discernment, he felt a new and deep peace as he moved forward. His discernment weekend brought a greater clarity and peace to him: “Spending time in front of the tabernacle in the chapel, and feeling a sense of peace.” He shares that his days in seminary were difficult, and he struggled with studying theology, but the mentorship he received helped him journey through seminary. (31:33) Priesthood — Fr. Jeff shares that he greatly enjoys working as a hospital chaplain. “The staff are the parishioners.” He discusses how he has been stretched in this ministry, about listening to the Holy Spirit, and meeting people in crisis. (51:05) Advice for discerning well — “Don't narrow the focus! All of us have different callings within the priesthood. Our roles change, and be open to that.” Fr. Jeff offers his insights into discerning a priestly vocation and how he sees God's work in our lives. He says, “Have a consistent daily prayer life… Eucharistic Adoration, Liturgy of the Hours….” He tells us discernment is a “win-win” situation.

Perception Check (The Mages of Velmyra Saga: Book One) Violet Spence wants nothing more than to have a normal life. After witnessing her childhood best friend get abducted by monsters, that's easier said than done. At twenty-three years old, Violet cannot seem to move past that fateful night ten years ago. Her only solace is Mages of Velmyra, a tabletop roleplaying game filled with goblins, fairies, and all-powerful magicians. But of course, that's all fantasy. Or, so she thought. As it turns out, the land of Velmyra is very real and the home of the monsters that took her best friend. For as long as she can remember, Astrid Knight has wanted to tell stories. A native to West Michigan, Astrid fostered a love of storytelling in all forms from a very young age. At least Michigan also lost. But Josh managed to power though along with Zach Lanning and Colby Marshall to bring you a recap of some of the action taking place in week one of the college season and giving you a heads up on some of the best games on deck for this coming weekend. In recent times, many higher ed observers have suggested that higher ed's business model is broken. In this episode we speak with the co-authors of the 'hot-off-the-press' book, The College of the Future, which lays out a bold plan to 'fix the broken business model' for those institutions that are most vulnerable--America's private, non-profit colleges. These colleges have long been a haven for students, an anchor for communities, and a cultural oasis in small towns and cities across America, but rising costs and falling enrollments have plunged many of these venerable institutions into debt. In the past decade, dozens have closed their doors for good, a devastating occurrence for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the communities surrounding the campuses. Even institutions that are thriving are faced with headwinds that necessitate strategic evolution. In our conversation with the book's co-authors, Jeffrey Docking, President of Adrian College, and Kevin Harrington, CEO of Rize Education make a compelling case for a collaborative model that allows colleges to quickly add enrollment-boosting majors, minors, certificates, and courses with significantly less cost and risk. Most importantly, this new model provides a path forward not only toward private colleges' sheer survival, but to their achievement of enduring viability. To learn more about joining RIZE, contact Kevin at kharrington@rize.education or President Docking at jdocking@adrian.edu.
