LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 5, 2025) — It's hard to believe it's been five years since the COVID-19 pandemic officially arrived in the Commonwealth – but on Friday, March 6, 2020, Gov. Andy Beshear confirmed the state's first COVID-19-positive patient and declared a state of emergency in Kentucky. And that first case was tested and diagnosed right here at the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital. That day began a grueling, years-long grind for medical professionals across the state, the country, and the world. Hospital systems struggled to keep up with surges of severely ill patients coming through their doors. Shortages of personal protective equipment, ventilators, ECMO machines, inpatient beds, and even health care providers themselves led to a type of global health crisis not seen in more than a century.   In today's episode of Behind the Blue, you'll hear from eight longtime employees from the medical side of UK's campus, ranging from administrators to frontline health care providers to researchers. We asked them to reflect on those scary, early days of the pandemic, how it impacted their professional and personal lives, and some of the lessons learned from living through such a significant moment in history. Let's meet our guests for this oral history of the COVID-19 pandemic at UK and in the Commonwealth.   Jenn Alonso has been at UK HealthCare for 13 years and has worked in the medicine intensive care unit (MICU) as a registered nurse since 2014. As a MICU nurse, she works alongside a team of physicians, nurses, therapists and other providers to take care of some of the most critically ill patients who come to UK HealthCare. Alonso was working in the MICU the day UK's first COVID-19 patient was admitted and was directly involved in frontline care for the sickest COVID-19 patients day in and day out.   Kim Blanton, D.N.P., is the chief nursing officer for UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital. Blanton began her nursing career at UK in 1998 in the neuro-trauma ICU and worked her way up through several nursing positions, including rapid response nursing, working as a division charge nurse and managing the cardiovascular stepdown unit. After briefly leaving UK to help create and run an ICU at a local rural hospital, she returned in 2011 as a hospital operations administrator before becoming the UK HealthCare enterprise director for Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) and Quality and Safety. Blanton was serving in her IPAC role when the COVID-19 pandemic began and was instrumental in UK's COVID-19 response: She helped bring home UK students from abroad, called COVID-19 patients to help them navigate their care and quarantine, developed plans and processes for patient surges and PPE needs, and much more.   Kevin Hatton, M.D., Ph.D., is the chief medical officer for UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital. An anesthesiologist by training, he earned both his medical degree and doctorate of philosophydegree from UK. Including his time in residency, Dr. Hatton has worked at UK HealthCare for 21 years, serving in a variety of leadership roles in anesthesiology in critical care medicineprimarily for neurology and cardiovascular ICUs. When the pandemic began, he was serving as senior medical director for critical care services as well as was interim director for ECMO services. Initially, Hatton's role focused on training and preparing the anesthesia critical care team to help provide care for non-COVID ICU patients, as much of the medicine ICU staff's time was spent caring for COVID-positive inpatients. ECMO, the highest form of life support, is a machine that takes over function of a patient's damaged heart and/or lungs by removing a patient's blood, oxygenating it, and returning it into the body. Though ECMO is used on a daily basis at UK HealthCare, its use skyrocketed during the pandemic as patients whose lungs were severely damaged by the virus needed this highest form of life support. As interim director for ECMO services, Hatton and his team had to rapidly develop protocols and processes to use the limited number of ECMO machines to help the most patients possible.   Ashley Montgomery-Yates, M.D., has been physician in the UK Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine since 2013. As a critical care physician, she works primarily in the MICU setting taking care of the sickest patients – people on ventilators, with multi-organ failure, post-operative complications, and more. In 2013, she launched UK HealthCare's ICURecovery Clinic, which helps patients who have been in the ICU navigate the follow-up care and resources they need to recover. At the time, UK HealthCare's ICU Recovery Clinic was just one of three in the nation. Montgomery-Yates is currently the senior vice chair for the Department of Internal Medicine. When the pandemic began, she had recently become the interim chief medical officer for inpatient and emergency services. In this role and as an ICU physician, Montgomery-Yates and her colleagues were heavily involved in the day-to-day care of inpatients with COVID-19. She was part of the team that launched UK's successful Mass Vaccination Clinic out at Kroger Field, and her ICU teams also helped guide the creation of UK HealthCare's brand-new MICU, which opened January 2024.   Meg Pyper is a division charge nurse with the UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital Emergency Department and has been with UK HealthCare Emergency Medicine since 2010. As a charge nurse, her role is like air traffic control for the ED — taking calls from EMS and local hospitals about incoming patients and transfers, determining what services that patient will need upon arrival, and notifying interdisciplinary team members to be prepared when those patients arrive. As a nurse, she was drawn to emergency medicine after seeing her favorite nurse mentors be “the calm in the chaos.” Pyper began in this role just weeks before the pandemic arrived in Kentucky, and she and her team were the first line of care COVID patients received when they arrived at UK Chandler Hospital.   Lindsay Ragsdale, M.D., is the chief medical officer for Kentucky Children's Hospital and chief of the Division of Pediatric Palliative Care. Since arriving at UK in 2013, she has worked to build a robust program that helps seriously ill young patients and their families by caring for them holistically – looking at their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being, and helping them navigate the experience of being severely ill.  Ragsdale became the KCH CMO in 2021, right when the COVID-19 delta variant was beginning to affect children much more than previous variants had. She helped set up both the pediatric monoclonal antibody clinic that provided infusions to help protect high-risk pediatric patients, as well as the successful pediatric vaccine clinic, which provided COVID-19 vaccines for children in a playful, engaging environment.   Rob Sprang is the director of Kentucky TeleCare, a role he's held at UK since 1996. UK first began using telehealth services in 1995. Since then, telehealth has grown by leaps and bounds, but its use skyrocketed during the pandemic. Earlier days of telehealth were usually done facility-to-facility — however, the vastly improved technology and public acceptance of telehealth, along with new, more relaxed regulatory laws around its use has allowed telehealth to explode in popularity. When the pandemic hit Kentucky, Sprang and his team — along with countless ambulatory providers and staff – worked 24/7 for more than a week to get UK HealthCare clinics set up to offer telehealth so that patients could still see their providers without needing to go into the hospital or clinic. Telehealth was a critical element in helping to protect both patients and providers from potential exposure to COVID-19.   Vince Venditto, Ph.D., is an associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences in the UK College of Pharmacy with a background in chemistry, drug delivery, and vaccine development. In the early days of the pandemic, his work in blood analysis – looking for biomarkers for cardiovascular disease in up to 1,500 samples at a time – was adapted to do mass testing for COVID antibodies as a means of diagnosis. After PCR tests became the gold standard for diagnosing the disease, his work shifted again — this time to working with local pharmacies for surveillance of COVID out in Kentucky communities. Post-COVID, this project has evolved to include other infectious diseases and inflammatory conditions, and it focuses on increasing access to health care through Kentucky's network of pharmacies. It also has a new name: Pharmacy-based Recruitment Opportunities To Enhance Community Testing and Surveillance (PROTECTS). Venditto co-directs this project along with Brooke Hudspeth, Pharm.D., an associate professor of pharmacy practice and science. Venditto is also part of The Consortium for Understanding and Reducing Infectious Diseases in Kentucky (CURE-KY), which fosters multidisciplinary collaborations to address the burden of infectious diseases in the Commonwealth and beyond. This consortium was built on the heels of UK's COVID-19 Unified Research Experts (CURE) Alliance, which was quickly assembled in 2020 to support a full range of COVID-related research. -- Behind the Blue is available via a variety of podcast providers, including iTunes and Spotify. From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, December 13th and I'm Keith Ippolito. Ragsdale Tells Lawmakers No to Phone Ban, Yes to THC Crackdown Superintendent Chris Ragsdale of Cobb County School District stated he won’t impose a cellphone ban, trusting teachers to manage classrooms. This contrasts with Marietta City Schools, where Superintendent Grant Rivera implemented a middle school ban on cellphones and smartwatches, managed via locked pouches, which received positive feedback. Ragsdale supports a flexible, school-specific approach, citing cellphones’ educational benefits. He voiced concern over student access to e-cigarettes and THC, urging stricter regulations and highlighting the severe legal consequences of THC possession. He also called for harsher penalties for school threat makers, citing the disruptions caused by over 80 false threats this year. To enhance safety, Ragsdale partnered with private intelligence firm Servius Group without board approval, stirring controversy. Though he described the partnership as critical for safety, some questioned its financial transparency. Meanwhile, Sen. Kay Kirkpatrick offered collaboration on stricter THC regulations to further safeguard students. For more news about our community, visit mdjonline.com. Chad kicks off the session by introducing himself and thanking the audience. He sets the stage for the conversation: how followers of Jesus can think critically and engage effectively with the world around them. He introduces a framework called the "cultural matrix," explaining how Christians approach culture along two axes: being "in the world" but "not of the world." Ragsdale describes different postures: accommodation (adjusting to culture) and hostility (opposing culture), noting both are still rooted within the world. He contrasts these with anti-culture (like the Amish, who isolate) and counter-culture (those who create alternative communities). These stances aren't wrong on their own but become problematic when they turn into rigid, inflexible approaches. Most people, Ragsdale says, fall somewhere between these extremes, combining approaches like quietism (accommodation + isolation), activism (counter-culture + hostility), and evangelism (counter-culture + accommodation). The key is flexibility—adapting to context while maintaining biblical balance, avoiding a one-size-fits-all mentality. Daniel McCoy then steps in, emphasizing the importance of creating a better culture as part of the Christian mission. He contrasts the destructive nature of the devil with God's creativity, which restores and unites. Creativity, McCoy explains, reflects God's work, combining virtues like courage and compassion to transcend the binary choices the world offers. He uses examples like parenting and church worship to show how Christians can integrate traditional and contemporary elements to build something more beautiful. During the Q&A, Ragsdale and McCoy address how these cultural postures relate to apologetics and the balance of grace and truth. Ragsdale emphasizes that apologetics should focus on addressing deeper hurts rather than simply winning arguments. He also stresses the need for fully integrating both grace and truth, sharing personal stories to illustrate how to live out these principles. They also touch on trends in evangelicalism, noting how younger Christians often lean towards activism. Ragsdale cautions against tribalism, urging ongoing self-examination and thoughtful engagement instead of falling into divisive either-or thinking. In closing, Ragsdale encourages the audience to keep asking questions, challenging their own views and others', and pursuing a more nuanced understanding of biblical truth. In summary, this episode offers practical wisdom for Christians on engaging culture thoughtfully and biblically, urging a balance of grace and truth, creativity, and a spirit of inquiry. From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, November 15th and I'm Keith Ippolito. Cobb Schools Super Tells Safety Plan Critics to 'Take a Break' Cobb County School Superintendent Chris Ragsdale urged critics of the district's safety plan to "take a break" from political rhetoric following the recent election, which maintained a Republican majority on the school board. Ragsdale highlighted the board's continued support for the district's vision and safety measures, including a controversial partnership with a private security firm, Servius Group, to monitor students using military intelligence tactics. This initiative, prompted by recent school shootings, aims to address digital threats and safety concerns. Critics, including state Rep. David Wilkerson, have raised concerns about potential profiling and lack of transparency. Ragsdale defended the plan, emphasizing its necessity for evolving safety strategies and denying allegations of profiling. Despite some board members' calls for more transparency, Ragsdale maintained that disclosing detailed safety measures could compromise student safety. From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, October 18th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. Six More Books Pulled from Cobb Schools Bringing Total to 32 Cobb County School District has removed six more books from its libraries, totaling 32 books banned due to explic it content concerns. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale has consistently updated the board on these removals, emphasizing the exclusion of materials deemed lewd or sexually explicit. The review process involves retired educators, though details about the committee remain unclear. Of the 32 books banned, 22 are also removed from Marietta schools. The debate over book bans has been contentious, with Republican board members supporting the removals and Democrats criticizing the process. Allegations of discrimination have arisen, particularly concerning books by minority authors or those highlighting LGBTQ experiences. A civil rights complaint was filed against the district, accusing it of discriminatory censorship. Ragsdale denies these claims, asserting the focus is on content, not targeting specific groups. The controversy began in 2023 when a conservative blog highlighted certain titles in district libraries. For more news about our community, visit mdjonline.com.  MDJ Script/ Top Stories for July 11th               Publish Date:  July 11th      Commercial: From the Ingles Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Thursday, July 11th and Happy heavenly Birthday to 6th President John Qunicy Adams. ***07.10.24 – BIRTHDAY – JOHN Q. ADAMS*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Cobb Delays Stormwater Fee Vote Indefinitely  Canton Road Health Spa's Business License Revoked Braves Break Ground on Habitat Home in Austell   Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb Delays Stormwater Fee Vote Indefinitely   The Cobb Board of Commissioners has indefinitely postponed proposed changes to stormwater charges due to a lack of consensus. Chairwoman Lisa Cupid emphasized the need for unified board support. Originally tabled in March amidst public opposition, the proposal was intended to shift from water usage-based fees to charges based on property impervious surface area. Commissioner JoAnn Birrell highlighted the necessity of amending county codes before implementing the fee, cautioning against expectations for imminent changes. The proposal, sparked by 2021 flooding, aimed to separate stormwater costs from water and sewage rates, affecting residential and non-residential properties differently. Despite financial concerns and opposition, Cupid encouraged exploring alternative funding approaches for essential infrastructure. STORY 2: Canton Road Health Spa's Business License Revoked The Cobb Board of Commissioners denied the renewal of Asian Wellness Massage's business license due to serious violations, voting 4-0 with Chairwoman Lisa Cupid absent. Commissioner JoAnn Birrell emphasized the severity of the violations, including suspicions of illicit activities such as human trafficking. Owner Lingxia Zhang faced emotional distress following the decision and must close the spa unless appealing in court. Additionally, Zhang is barred from applying for a new license for a year. Another spa, V Massage, had its license renewal appeal postponed amidst similar allegations. The hearing, involving Mandarin-English translation, highlighted concerns from commissioners about illegal activities and conflicting testimonies. This decision follows a temporary halt on health spa licenses amid ongoing investigations into illicit practices. STORY 3: Brave Break Ground on Habitat Home in Austell In Austell, Habitat for Humanity and the Atlanta Braves Foundation have launched a new home-building project for Quintasha Swanson and her daughter, Angel. Swanson, an executive assistant to Austell's Police Chief, will be the first in her family to own a home thanks to this collaboration. She overcame challenges after losing her previous home and living in temporary accommodations. The Braves Foundation surprised Swanson with the sponsorship, highlighting her dedication to the community. The project involves Swanson completing "sweat-equity" hours and financial education courses, aiming for completion by September. Volunteers, including Braves staff, will assist throughout the construction, fostering community spirit in Austell. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.    We'll be right back  Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Cobb Health Launches Septic Tank Pumping Reimbursement Project Cobb & Douglas Public Health is launching a Septic Tank Pumping Incentive Program funded by an American Rescue Plan Act grant. Aimed at primary homeowners in Cobb County, the program offers up to $250 in water bill credits for those who pump their septic tanks. Regular maintenance is crucial to prevent system failures and protect water quality. Homeowners must use state-approved providers and complete services between July 2023 and September 2026. Participants can apply for the credit by submitting proof of service through an online portal or by mail. For more details and enrollment, visit Cobb & Douglas Public Health's website or contact them directly. STORY 5: Cobb Super's Full Remarks to Cancel $50 Million Event Center At a special meeting, Superintendent Chris Ragsdale announced the Cobb County Board of Education's decision to cancel the $50 million event center project, citing economic concerns. Ragsdale emphasized the district's commitment to its employees, promising not to balance the budget through pay cuts or furloughs, as seen during the 2008 recession. He highlighted rising inflation and slower growth as significant factors impacting the budget. Despite a strong current fund balance, Ragsdale stressed the need for caution to ensure financial stability and protect employee welfare. The decision aims to prioritize staff over new facilities, maintaining focus on sustainable budgeting practices.   We'll be back in a moment    Break: INGLES 5   And now here is Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath on cooking fish.     We'll have closing comments after this.   Break: MARIETTA THEATRE   Signoff-   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, April 19th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. Cobb Schools Removes Four More Books From Libraries The Cobb County School District, under Superintendent Chris Ragsdale, has removed four more books from its libraries, citing them as "age-inappropriate." The titles include ‘It Ends with Us,' ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower,' ‘Lucky,' and ‘Thirteen Reasons Why'. This follows the removal of two other books in August 2023. Ragsdale emphasized the action as protecting children from explicit content, framing it as a moral issue. Here is Ragsdale on the additional book bans: ***CHRIS RAGSDALE*** However, some parents, like Sharon Hudson, criticized the move, defending media specialists' expertise and accusing the board of overstepping. Here is Hudson on the additional book bans: ***SHARON HUDSON*** Ragsdale countered criticism by denying that the district is banning books, likening the removals to restricting access to movies not suitable for children, and stated the process aims to ensure no inappropriate materials are in school libraries. Scott and Wendi sit down with TFAA Hall of Fame inductee Toby Ragsdale.   Always a preasure to hang with our friend Toby! The Ragsdale family joined the NFAA/TFAA in 1965, when Toby was just 5 years old. He vividly remembers that year because he was one year shy of being able to compete, which didn't sit well with the naturally competitive young Toby. Toby only waited that one year before he began competing with his bow. Toby had tremendous success as a young archer and if you shot back in those days, you knew the archers in Texas were the most dominating and competitive group of shooters in the country. Toby Ragsdale won two (2) National Championships, at least seven (7) Sectional Championships, and six (6) State Championships. At the young age of 62, Toby has won at least one archery championship in each of the last six decades. https://www.patreon.com/RaisinganArcher

Like much of the country, Arizona had revolutionary Black activists fighting for their community during the 1950s and 1960s. It may seem like a small scale compared to more famous names like Martin Luther King Jr or Malcolm X. But like how voting in a local election impacts your day to day more than voting for President, the civil rights leaders of Phoenix and its surrounding cities changed the way Arizona is shaped today. One such revolutionary, Dr. Lincoln Ragsdale Sr., was on the forefront of desegregation in the city, but his time fighting for racial freedoms went far beyond schools. This week on Valley 101, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com about metro Phoenix and beyond, we share the legacy of Dr. Lincoln Ragsdale Sr. Learn more about your ad choices. Hendricks was allegedly driving a van on the Six Flags Over Georgia grounds with multiple occupants in the rear cargo compartment, including two juveniles, without seatbelts or seats. Ragsdale commended Marietta City Schools for their similar efforts. The initial bans were prompted by an email from the right-wing social media group Libs of TikTok. Ragsdale asserted that once sexually explicit content is identified, it is the district's responsibility to protect students and inform parents. The ongoing review aims to identify and remove such materials. Critics argue that the bans disproportionately affect LGBTQ+ content, leading to concerns about the targeting of the LGBTQ+ community. Public commenters, including high school senior Ava Bussey, expressed opposition to the book bans, citing the impact on LGBTQ+ students and urging the district to listen to students' needs for a successful learning environment. STORY 5: Cobb Leaders Break Ground on Mableton Workforce Development Center Cobb County is set to establish the Cobb WorkSource Center in Mableton, with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by over 50 people. The $4 million project, funded by $2.8 million from the American Rescue Plan Act and grants, aims to become a hub for workforce development, offering training rooms, a computer lab, and business coaching services. The 10,000-square-foot center will replace Cobb Fire Station 1 on Mableton Parkway, addressing the need for workforce development services in the southern part of the county. The property, spanning over 10 acres, includes the former A1 Rental facility, the district's police department headquarters, and a demolished building at 440 Glover Street. The new event center aims to fill a void in the northern part of Cobb County, providing a space for various activities. Board member Becky Sayler has expressed concerns about additional costs and lack of clarity regarding the project's expenses. Board Chairman Randy Scamihorn anticipates the new facility's potential and the need for improvements to the police department headquarters, with construction timelines yet to be determined. The board plans to engage Atlanta-based Collins Cooper Carusi Architects to design the center, funded by the sixth education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (Ed-SPLOST) at an estimated cost of over $700,000. The center, mandated to be in north Cobb per the SPLOST project list, aims to provide students with alternative pathways to traditional four-year colleges. The district is currently exploring suitable locations for the center, with a central north Cobb location suggested for better accessibility. Additionally, the board discussed the development of a $50 million multi-use facility approved in March 2023, which is expected to host various events such as science fairs, arts presentations, and graduation ceremonies. Warren Buffett's past skepticism resonates, as airlines like JetBlue and Spirit grapple with financial woes. Fitch Ratings urges a clear liquidity plan. Despite potential disruptions, bankruptcy doesn't guarantee passenger abandonment. Spirit's decision to resist a merger with JetBlue adds complexity to its fate, impacting consumers and the airline industry. Spirit asserts ongoing efforts to fortify its balance sheet and operations.   Break: INGLES 1 – Henssler :60  Signoff-   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. Joseph E. Johnston   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CU of GA    STORY 1: Cobb Unemployment Drops Below 3% In November, Cobb County's unemployment rate dropped to 2.8%, down from 3.1% in October but higher than 2.4% in November 2022. The county's labor force increased by 295, with 431,345 employed and 12,226 unemployed. The rise in unemployment is attributed to individuals re-entering the workforce post-COVID-19. Economist Roger Tutterow notes that the increased unemployment rate isn't concerning if job cuts aren't occurring, highlighting a significant increase in employed workers. Marietta's November unemployment rate was 2.7%, while Smyrna's remained at 3.2%. Cobb County's unemployment rate is lower than Atlanta's (3.1%) and Georgia's (3.4%), both below the national rate of 3.7%. STORY 2: Kennesaw Council Newcomer Ready to Take on Wildman's Civil War Surplus Madelyn Orochena, newly elected to Kennesaw City Council, aims to close Wildman's Civil War Surplus, a Confederate-themed store in the city's downtown. Orochena, who views the store as a hindrance to progress, plans to pursue legal action or code enforcement to shut it down. While previous blight complaints were dismissed, Orochena, an arts enthusiast, hopes to transform the downtown into a vibrant destination with a diverse range of shops. She initiated a mural installation near Wildman's, emphasizing her commitment to public art. Orochena also advocates for pedestrian safety, affordable housing, and the city's overall growth and improvement. STORY 3: Cobb Civil War Round Table Examines Gen. Joseph E. Johnston Historian Richard McMurry discussed Gen. Joseph E. Johnston at a meeting of the Civil War Round Table of Cobb County. McMurry's latest book, "The Civil Wars of General Joseph E. Johnston," provides a critical analysis of Johnston's campaigns during the Civil War. Johnston, once considered a premier Confederate general, faced challenges defending Atlanta against Gen. William T. Sherman. McMurry's research debunked long-held myths about Johnston, revealing his strategic shortcomings and conflicts with fellow officers. The discussion delved into Johnston's Atlanta campaign, which ultimately resulted in Atlanta's fall to the Union Army led by Sherman.     We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. The Democratic majority, leveraging Georgia's home rule powers, replaced the state-approved commission district map with its own, challenging the legality of the move. Republican Commissioners JoAnn Birrell and Keli Gambrill abstained from voting, leading to their removal from the dais. The dispute centers on whether Georgia counties can independently draw district maps. A lawsuit, initiated by Gambrill and continued by Cobb residents Catherine and David Floam, challenges the county's map, seeking a declaration of its unconstitutionality and validation of the legislature's map. The court is expected to issue a ruling soon. STORY 5: No. 3: Cobb School Board Map Thrown into Question by Lawsuit The third-ranked local story of 2023 in Cobb County involves a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the Cobb Board of Education's districts. The lawsuit alleged an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, leading to a federal judge's order for the General Assembly to draw new districts by January 10. The judge issued a preliminary injunction, preventing future elections using the current school board map. The school district, which spent over $1.3 million defending the map, appealed the injunction to the 11th Circuit of Appeals. The contentious issue revolves around accusations of packing and bleaching voters based on race, with the school board's Republican majority drawing the map after the 2020 census.   We'll be back in a moment    Break: DRAKE – INGLES 6     STORY 6: Judge upholds new Georgia congressional, legislative maps U.S. District Judge Steve Jones ruled that federal judges lack the authority to redistribute political power between parties, upholding Georgia's new legislative and congressional maps. The maps were redrawn during a special session following lawsuits alleging Voting Rights Act violations. Jones ordered additional Black-majority districts, aiming for Democratic gains. Despite legislative leaders crafting maps to maintain Republican advantages, Jones ruled that partisan decisions alone don't violate the Voting Rights Act. He upheld the new maps, including the elimination of a coalition district, deeming it moot. Rep. Lucy McBath plans to run in the new Black-majority district, emphasizing the importance of voters' will. STORY 7: No. 4: Books, Bans and 'Good and Evil' The culture wars hit Cobb and Marietta school districts as book bans ignited tensions. Cobb Schools Superintendent Chris Ragsdale fired teacher Katie Rinderle for reading "My Color is Purple" to students. Despite protests, the Cobb Board of Education upheld Rinderle's termination, prompting an appeal to the Georgia Board of Education. In August, Ragsdale removed "Flamer" and "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" for "sexually explicit content." Marietta Superintendent Grant Rivera followed suit, sparking protests. Both superintendents faced criticism and support for their decisions amid a broader debate on book censorship and education.     Break: Henssler :60  Signoff-   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. The bridge, part of a $43 million segment, spans Interstate 75 and leads to a new roundabout behind the Home Depot on Roberts Road. The overall project aims to reduce traffic on Barrett Parkway by around 20%. The first phase was completed in 2010, the second in 2018, and the current phase is expected to conclude by the end of 2024. Ragsdale emphasized concerns about vouchers, stating they often fail to cover private school tuition fully and that families targeted for help might lack transportation. Esteves questioned the potential impact on education funding and indirect funding loss for Cobb schools. Setzler argued that only state funds, not local, would be directed to private schools under the proposed voucher system.
