MDJ Script/ Top Stories for November 19th Publish Date:  November 19th Commercial: From the BG Ad Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Wednesday, November 19th and Happy Birthday to Meg Ryan I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal Lawmakers consider paring tax credits and exemptions to offset income tax cuts As Cobb school board approves new buses, Ragsdale pushes back on criticism Cobb’s new Renaissance Fair becomes instant hit with festival-goers All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  BREAK: Ingles 9 STORY 1: Lawmakers consider paring tax credits and exemptions to offset income tax cuts Georgia lawmakers are seriously talking about ditching the state income tax—$16 billion worth of revenue—and replacing it by slashing $30 billion in tax credits and exemptions. “It’s not if, it’s when,” said Sen. Blake Tillery, who’s leading the charge. He called it a move for “competitiveness.” Supporters like economist Arthur Laffer praised states like Tennessee for thriving without income taxes, calling it “really cool” not to file returns. But critics, like Sen. Nan Orrock, warned it could hit low-income families and retirees hardest, especially if sales taxes rise. The debate? Far from over. STORY 2: As Cobb school board approves new buses, Ragsdale pushes back on criticism Tensions ran high Thursday as Cobb Superintendent Chris Ragsdale defended the district’s transportation department amid ongoing criticism of bus safety and maintenance. “There are no unsafe buses on the roads. Period. Zero,” Ragsdale said, calling claims to the contrary “untrue and unacceptable.” The school board approved $4.97 million for 30 new buses, but public commenters weren’t buying the reassurances. Mechanics like Eric Carroll, a 14-year employee, pushed back hard. “We’re not liars,” he said, visibly emotional. “We need help.” Meanwhile, Ragsdale dismissed the concerns as fearmongering, sparking outrage from workers who say they’re overworked, understaffed, and unheard. The investigation? Still ongoing. STORY 3: Cobb’s new Renaissance Fair becomes instant hit with festival-goers  The 16th century came alive Saturday at Cobb’s first-ever Big Shanty Bazaar, and honestly? It was a hit. By the time the gates opened at The Big Shanty Art Station, over 100 people were already lined up, many decked out in Renaissance garb or fantasy costumes—dragons, wizards, you name it. “It’s way more than I expected,” said organizer Roxanne Thompson. “I was hoping for maybe a thousand all day, but this? Wow.” The festival had it all: axe throwing, pony rides, blacksmith demos, and an artisan market selling everything from D&D dice to handmade cloaks. The vibes? Impeccable. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.  We’ll be right back. Break: STRAND THEATRE STORY 4: Cobb NAACP holds annual awards gala The Cobb NAACP’s 46th annual Oscar Freeman Freedom Fund Awards Gala brought together community leaders, elected officials, and trailblazers Saturday night for an evening of celebration, reflection, and a little dancing. The event featured a reception, silent auction, dinner, and awards ceremony. Civil rights pioneer Deane Bonner, a cornerstone of the Cobb NAACP, was front and center—dancing, speaking, and inspiring. Honorees included Rev. Joe Evans, named Religious Leader of the Year, and countless others who’ve shaped the community. “It’s about honoring the past while building the future,” said organizer Jeriene Bonner-Willis. STORY 5: Cobb reallocates $2.96M for food distribution, South Cobb Public Health Center  Cobb commissioners just gave the green light to reallocate nearly $3 million in unspent federal COVID relief funds, aiming to boost food distribution programs and help fund the long-awaited South Cobb Public Health Center. Of the $2.96 million, $206,000 will go to local nonprofits like MUST Ministries and Sweetwater Mission, which have been struggling to meet surging demand for food assistance. “This will help families get through the holidays,” said Chair Lisa Cupid. The remaining $2.75 million, saved from a bridge project, will go toward the health center, a critical project for South Cobb residents that’s been years in the making. Break: STORY 6: “Stuff the Turkey” donation event collects 1,000 items for locals in need   The Goddard School of Vinings recently held its “Stuff the Turkey” drive, and wow, did the community show up. Located on Log Cabin Drive, the school collected over 1,000 items—canned goods, diapers, hygiene products, you name it. All donations went to 7 Bridges to Recovery, a local nonprofit helping women, kids, and those facing homelessness in Atlanta. “It’s incredible to see what we can do together,” a school representative said. Want to learn more about their efforts (or maybe help out next time)? Check out their website. Small acts, big impact—every bit counts. STORY 7: Fielding Lewis DAR Chapter builds and donates Chad’s Bracket Wagons  The Fielding Lewis Chapter of the DAR recently rolled up their sleeves for the D building nine bright red Chad’s Bracket wagons—specialized hospital wagons designed to make life a little easier (and safer) for kids in hospitals. This wasn’t just any project. Volunteers worked alongside Roger Leggett, the founder of Chad’s Bracket, whose mission began after a heartbreaking loss: his son Chad, an EMT, passed away at 24. Inspired by Chad’s compassion, Leggett created these wagons, which now bring comfort to kids nationwide. “These wagons may seem simple, but they’re life-changing,” said Chapter Regent Melissa Tanner. We’ll have closing comments after this. Break: INGLES 9 Signoff-   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. X's and Joe's Episode 40: Data vs Drama - A View of Modern RecruitingBob Moats and Mike Wiemuth welcome special guest Stephen Ragsdale, creator of IURecruiting.com, for a deep dive into how data-driven analysis can cut through the emotional chaos of following college basketball recruiting.Meet Stephen Ragsdale and IURecruiting.com[00:00-17:00]Stephen introduces himself as a third-generation IU fan who turned his Excel spreadsheet tracking into a comprehensive recruiting website. His journey from casual follower to creator of IURecruiting.com stemmed from wanting better tools to understand the recruiting process. The conversation touches on early season optimism around IU basketball, with Trent Sisley's viral shot from above Five Guys on Kirkwood symbolizing a new era of offensive philosophy under Darren DeVries. The Recruiting Bingo Card[17:00-30:00]Mike unveils his famous "Recruiting Miss Bingo Card" - a collection of predictable fan responses that appear on message boards after every recruiting loss. Classics include "We don't want him anyway," "This just proves we don't cheat," and "I only want kids who want to play for IU." The group discusses how these responses transcend fanbases, with Stephen noting Purdue fans' fixation on the cheating angle and Notre Dame supporters emphasizing academic standards. The card highlights how fans often rationalize losses by suggesting the coach nearly made a catastrophic mistake, but thankfully the recruit had the sense to go elsewhere. The Recruiting Funnel Framework[30:00-45:00]Mike introduces the corporate HR recruiting funnel model adapted for college basketball. Using Kansas's 2019 recruitment of Jalen Wilson as a case study, he demonstrates how successful programs move from many offers (10) to fewer official visits (3) to one commitment. The concept of "traction" becomes crucial - can you get elite kids interested enough to visit? Stephen shares how this framework was eye-opening for him, shifting his perspective from Mike Woodson's "fall in love with one target" approach to understanding roster building as a numbers game requiring multiple irons in the fire.IURecruiting.com Deep Dive[45:00-75:00]Stephen walks through his website's functionality, showing how it tracks offers, visits, and commitments across multiple recruiting classes and positions. The tool includes funnel comparisons with Kentucky, Kansas, and Arkansas - three programs with distinctly different recruiting philosophies. Key insights emerge about IU's 2026 recruiting:• Strong conversion rates at center position (3 visits from 6 offers)• Limited point guard targeting mirroring industry-wide trends toward portal guards• Critical Anthony Thompson recruitment coming down to IU vs Ohio State• The site reveals patterns that individual recruit tracking missesThe discussion highlights how Bill Self casts the widest net with offers while someone like Coach K was more selective, and how understanding these different approaches helps contextualize IU's strategy. The Modern Recruiting Landscape[75:00-End]The group examines how recruiting has fundamentally changed with the portal era. Key observations:• Elite programs like Florida, Louisville, and Michigan now build rosters with 1-2 elite high school players and multiple high-end portal transfers• Point guard positions especially skew toward experienced portal additions rather than 18-year-old freshmen• International recruiting (IU's two Yugoslav players) represents another talent stream• The "win first, then recruit" fallacy gets debunked - you need elite talent to win, not vice versaMike provides critical context about the Moneyball aspect of NIL: five-star freshmen rarely saturate winning metrics like Box Plus Minus. Only four five-stars made the top 50 nationally in BPM last season (Cooper Flagg, Khaman Maluach, Kon Knueppel, and VJ Edgecombe). The sweet spot kids and elite transfers dominate those leaderboards, suggesting programs should be more strategic about where they invest NIL dollars. The episode concludes with cautious optimism about DeVries's early recruiting indicators and why the Anthony Thompson recruitment looms as a key test.On the mics: Bob Moats, Mike Wiemuth, and special guest Stephen RagsdaleSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Chris and Courtney sit down with Dr. Haley Ragsdale to discuss intergenerational signals of matrilineal experience. Haley completed her dissertation in Anthropology at Northwestern University in 2023 under the guidance of Dr. Chris Kuzawa. She is now a postdoctoral researcher in the Anthropology Department at the University of Illinois Chicago, collaborating with Dr. Katie Starkweather on fascinating projects related to maternal and child health among the Shodagor of Bangladesh. Haley's work is deeply rooted in evolutionary theory and the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) framework, with a focus on human reproductive biology. She explores how energetic experiences shape lifetime metabolic strategies and how reproductive investments are influenced by varying environmental contexts. Currently, she's diving into the mechanisms behind intergenerational signals of matrilineal experience and predictive adaptive responses in humans. ------------------------------ Find the paper discussed in this episode: Ragsdale, H. On Aug. 18, the city council voted unanimously against EBC Pinecrest, LLC’s request to rezone 5.45 acres on Pine Crest Road for the project. Why? Safety concerns—mainly the lack of proper sidewalks. The developer offered $5,000 toward sidewalk improvements, but the city estimated the cost at $96,000—or $204,000 with drainage upgrades. The rest of the council agreed. Request denied. STORY 2: Cherokee County Commissioner Corey Ragsdale hosting town hall  Cherokee County District 4 Commissioner Corey Ragsdale is hosting a town hall on Aug. 27, and if you’ve got questions, this might be your chance to get answers. The meeting runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Oak Grove Community Room (100 Ridgemill Ave., near Acworth). Ragsdale plans to cover big topics like upcoming capital projects—Woodworth Park, for one—and transportation updates affecting District 4, which includes parts of southwest Cherokee, Woodstock, and Towne Lake. Atlanta Gas Light reps will also be there to talk about the Wade Green Phase II Pressure Improvement Project. Got questions? Stick around for the Q&A. STORY 3: Cherokee County suing Holly Springs over Hickory Flat annexation Holly Springs just approved a controversial annexation for a mixed-use development in Hickory Flat, and Cherokee County isn’t happy about it—so much so, they’re suing to overturn the decision. On Aug. 18, the city council greenlit Garrard Development’s plan to annex 20 acres near Lower Union Hill Road and East Cherokee Drive. The project includes 89 homes and nearly 58,000 square feet of commercial space. But here’s the kicker: the land sits outside the growth boundary agreed upon by the city and county. County leaders called it a breach of trust—“a gentleman’s handshake,” as one commissioner put it. Now, it’s heading to court. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info.    We’ll be right back. Break: HISTORY CHEROKEE STORY 4: Cherokee County and GDOT celebrate start to bridge replacement After 30 years of waiting, work is finally starting on a new bridge for Bells Ferry Road over Little River. Yes, 30 years. The current bridge? It’ll stay open while crews build the new one, which is set to include minor road improvements and even a pedestrian culvert for safer crossings. Construction kicks off Aug. 25, with completion expected by fall 2027. The $24.4 million project, funded by federal and state dollars, has been delayed, redesigned, and renegotiated since the 1990s. STORY 5: Cherokee County approves agreement to create land bank Cherokee County is setting up a land bank—finally. The Cherokee Regional Land Bank, a partnership between the county and Canton (so far), aims to breathe new life into abandoned or blighted properties. Think affordable housing, economic development, and maybe even a little hope for neglected spaces. The county approved the agreement on Aug. 19, following Canton’s green light earlier this month. Holly Springs and Woodstock? They’re still deciding. Board appointments will roll out over the next 90 days. Change is coming—slowly, but surely. On Aug. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m., Maple Avenue transforms into a block party with a purpose—celebrating the first responders and city workers who keep this town running. Every dollar helps fill Community Appreciation Bags for Marietta’s everyday heroes. STORY 2: Cobb Youth Leadership announces 2025-2026 Class The Cobb Youth Leadership program just announced its 2025-2026 class, and wow—this group is stacked with talent. Sponsored by the Leadership Cobb Alumni Association and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, CYL is all about building leadership skills and connecting students across the county. Here’s the lineup: Karmen Smith (Allatoona), Chimamanda Akano and Andrew Vincent (Campbell), Austin Richardson (Harrison), and a whole crew from Hillgrove—Gabby Oden, Ashley Bass, Reagan Bass, Jocelyn Jones, and Jordana Valdez. Marietta High? They’re bringing the squad: Chloe Herrero, Jack Ison III, Caleb Johnson, Rhodes Patrick, and more. This program, running since 1989, gives juniors a chance to dive into their community and grow as leaders. Got questions? Hit up Katie Guice at 770-859-2334. STORY 3: Suspect charged with breaking into Delk Road Marriott rooms Bradley Dekover Traylor, 44, of Atlanta, found himself in hot water after allegedly breaking into multiple rooms at the Courtyard by Marriott on Delk Road. It all went down early—around 8 a.m. on July 26, according to Marietta police. From Room 318, he reportedly swiped a Michael Kors watch, a black-and-silver cross necklace, and a gold necklace. The guest gave police a detailed description of the stolen items, and hotel staff pointed them toward Traylor. By 1:33 p.m., officers tracked him down at the Shell Station on Delk Road—with the jewelry still on him. He’s now sitting in Cobb County Jail, no bond. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: COBB INT. FESTIVAL STORY 4: End of an era: Roswell Street congregation to join Woodstock church Roswell Street Baptist Church, once a powerhouse in Marietta and a cornerstone of the Southern Baptist community, is starting a new chapter—one that’s bittersweet for many. After years of decline, the church will merge with First Baptist Woodstock, becoming its second location. The numbers tell the story: membership dropped from 9,200 in 2014 to just 3,600 last year. Weekly attendance? Down to 433. The church even had to demolish its historic chapel. Starting Sunday, Christian Norman, an associate pastor from Woodstock, will step in as Roswell Street’s new pastor. The merger will take six months to finalize, with a full relaunch planned for 2026—complete with a new name that nods to Roswell Street’s history while embracing its future. STORY 5: Cobb super kicks off school year with visit to Vaughan Elementary First day of school vibes were in full swing at Vaughan Elementary on Monday, and Cobb Schools Superintendent Chris Ragsdale made the rounds to wish students a great year ahead. Over 105,000 students and 17,000 staff returned across 113 schools, but at Vaughan, the Rockets were already soaring—literally reciting their motto: “Rockets of Vaughan soar on!” In Kelli Connor’s second-grade class, kids prepped for Ragsdale’s visit by comparing his traits to the mischievous “No David!” from David Shannon’s book. (Spoiler: Ragsdale’s character won out.) During a press conference—fielding questions from students, not reporters—Ragsdale praised Cobb’s teachers as “superstars” and touched on AI, new safety measures (hello, Vapor Wake K-9s), and the upcoming cell phone restrictions. Break: STORY 6: Mayor Tumlin to run again, serve through grandchildren’s eyes Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin is running again—though, if you ask him, it wasn’t exactly his idea at first. But with three longtime council members—Andy Morris, Grif Chalfant, and Johnny Walker—stepping down, Tumlin, 78, felt a sense of duty. Born and raised in Marietta, Tumlin’s roots run deep. His six grandkids are either in Marietta schools or just graduated, and he says that perspective—seeing the city through their eyes—shapes his leadership. As for his challengers, 23-year-old Sam Foster and 26-year-old Sully Diaz, Tumlin’s ready to defend his record. On affordable housing, he’s all about balance. “If it’s not livable, it’s not affordable,” he said. The election’s set for November 4, with early voting starting October 14. STORY 7: 'No teeth': Mableton’s code enforcement waits on court Mableton took over its own code enforcement back in March, but there’s a snag—no municipal court yet to back it up. Without one, fines for violations? Not happening. The city’s first-ever municipal court is expected to open in “three to six months,” says spokesperson Gregory Woods. Until then, code enforcement is doing what it can, issuing about 160 violation notices a month. Compliance? Just 30% so far, though Woods says that’ll improve once the court’s running. The city’s working fast to get the court operational. They’ve already hired a court administrator, Mallory Minor, and are recruiting for key roles like judge and prosecutor. Once open, the court will focus on the worst violations first. For now, Mableton’s educating residents on compliance and resources. The court, when ready, will be at 1245 Veterans Memorial Highway. We’ll have closing comments after this. Break: INGLES 9 Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. It is with great sadness I post this podcast. It is a recording I did with Jane Ragsdale back in 2023. Jane was the owner of the Heart O'the Hill Camp near Hunt TX. She died as a result of the massive flood which roared down the Guadalupe River in the early morning hours of July 4. As of the posting of this podcast there are over 80 confirmed dead, 11 know still missing and an unknown number of missing. One of the worst hit was a girls' camp, Camp Mystic which lost 27 dead.   Jane was from a summer camping family as her parents Si and Kathy Ragsdale ran a boys' camp, Camp Stewart, also in Hunt TX from the mid-1960s until 2015 when Jane's nephew Jeepers Ragsdale took over running Camp Stewart. Jane was beloved in both the camping community and the greater Hill Country community. She was a leader and did annual mission work in Guatemala.  This podcast focused on her mission work.   I hope you will consider a donation to help the rebuilding that will be needed after this tragic event. You can donate to flood relief for victims of the Kerr County flooding by going to the Hill Country Flood Relief here.

In this episode, professors Chad Ragsdale and Daniel McCoy dive into what it means to think critically and engage culture as faithful Christians, drawing from their co-authored book. Chad kicks things off with the question: “How do we love God with all our minds?” He outlines a helpful framework—four ways Christians typically interact with culture—based on two axes: accommodation vs. hostility, and anti-culture vs. counter-culture. He explains how each approach can have its place, but when a temporary strategy becomes a rigid default, it often loses its biblical grounding. Daniel then contrasts the destructive nature of Satan with the creative nature of God. While the enemy tears apart relationships, truth, and virtue, God brings things together—truth and love, compassion and courage—to create something new and life-giving. He shares everyday examples, like navigating LGBTQ+ issues with both grace and truth, or parenting with both tenderness and honesty. The conversation emphasizes that discipleship means staying thoughtful and flexible—continually learning, asking hard questions, and avoiding knee-jerk responses to culture. Chad highlights the need for churches to regularly teach on these tensions, encouraging deep, ongoing reflection rather than simplistic answers. Overall, this episode equips Christians to engage today's world with wisdom and grace—grounded in Scripture, guided by love, and always open to learning how to better reflect Christ in complex cultural moments.

Sheffield, first elected in 2020, celebrated the win at her Mableton home and emphasized her commitment to serving all constituents, regardless of party affiliation. Her victory, alongside Democrat Erick Allen's in District 2, restores the Cobb County Commission's Democratic majority. Hardwick, the first Republican to run for the seat in years, narrowed Sheffield's early voting lead but fell short. Sheffield's next term will focus on health and wellness in her district. STORY 2: Murph's Restaurant to Close for Galleria Remodel, Future Uncertain The future of Murph’s, a restaurant and bar opened by Braves legend Dale Murphy in 2017, is uncertain as the Cobb Galleria Centre undergoes a major remodel. The Galleria’s renovation, set to begin this fall, includes demolishing the space where Murph’s is located. Initially assured they’d be part of the remodel, the Murphys were recently informed their restaurant is no longer in the plans. Despite strong community support and success, Murph’s is set to close in August. The Murphys hope to negotiate a solution in an upcoming meeting with Galleria management but are also exploring other location options near Truist Park. STORY 3: Cobb EMC Directors Look Back on Scandal, Discuss Looming Term Limits Cobb EMC has rebounded from a decade of scandal under former CEO Dwight Brown, who was accused of self-dealing and mismanagement, leaving the co-op in financial turmoil. Since then, a new board elected in 2011-2012 has transformed the organization, achieving some of the lowest electric rates in Georgia and top national reliability. However, term limits approved in 2012 mean the entire board will be replaced between 2026 and 2028, raising concerns about the loss of institutional knowledge. While directors support term limits, some suggest staggering turnover to ease transitions. The co-op remains in strong standing, with members set to elect new leadership in the coming years. Break: INGLES 1 STORY 4: UPDATE: Erick Allen Wins Cobb District 2 Seat, Restores Democratic Majority on Commission Democrat Erick Allen has won the vacant District 2 seat on the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, securing 58.6% of the vote against Republican Alicia Adams' 41.4%. Allen's victory, alongside Monique Sheffield's projected win, restores the board's Democratic majority. The District 2 seat was vacated in February after Jerica Richardson's removal due to a redistricting battle. Allen emphasized unity in his victory speech, pledging to bring the fractured district together. Adams, despite her loss, highlighted her campaign's focus on giving a voice to underrepresented constituents. Allen's leadership is expected to strengthen collaboration across the county and state levels. STORY 5: 'Apples and Dump Trucks': Cobb Schools Approves Band Loan, New Scoreboard Cobb Superintendent Chris Ragsdale defended the district’s processes after approving a $50,000 loan for Pebblebrook High School’s band uniforms and a $439,497 privately funded scoreboard for Walton High. The Pebblebrook loan, to be repaid over five years, is one of the few exceptions the district makes for extracurricular funding. Walton’s scoreboard, funded by private donations, required board approval due to its cost exceeding $200,000. Ragsdale emphasized that all projects, regardless of funding source, must follow district procedures. Board members highlighted the importance of supporting programs like Pebblebrook’s large, nationally recognized band while maintaining clear policies for funding and approvals. Break: TIDWELL TREES_FINAL STORY 6: Head of North Cobb Christian Renews 4-Year Contract Todd Clingman, head of North Cobb Christian School in Kennesaw, has renewed his contract for another four years, extending his tenure to 22 years. Clingman, who joined the 55-acre private Christian school in 2007, has been praised by Board President Todd Rainwater for his mission-driven leadership and transformative impact on the school’s community and campus. The board expressed gratitude for Clingman’s dedication to the school’s vision and values, celebrating his continued leadership as he prepares for his 18th year in the role. STORY 7: Marietta Resident Receives Outstanding Master’s Student Award Claire Warner of Marietta was honored with the Outstanding Master's Student Award from Georgia State University's College of Education & Human Development during the spring 2025 Honors Day Ceremony. The award recognizes her exceptional scholarship and clinical service in the communication sciences and disorders master's program. We’ll have closing comments after this. March 5, 2025 - UK & COVID-19, 5 Years On...

Behind the Blue

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 5, 2025 109:07

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 5, 2025) — It's hard to believe it's been five years since the COVID-19 pandemic officially arrived in the Commonwealth – but on Friday, March 6, 2020, Gov. Andy Beshear confirmed the state's first COVID-19-positive patient and declared a state of emergency in Kentucky. And that first case was tested and diagnosed right here at the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital. That day began a grueling, years-long grind for medical professionals across the state, the country, and the world. Hospital systems struggled to keep up with surges of severely ill patients coming through their doors. Shortages of personal protective equipment, ventilators, ECMO machines, inpatient beds, and even health care providers themselves led to a type of global health crisis not seen in more than a century.   In today's episode of Behind the Blue, you'll hear from eight longtime employees from the medical side of UK's campus, ranging from administrators to frontline health care providers to researchers. We asked them to reflect on those scary, early days of the pandemic, how it impacted their professional and personal lives, and some of the lessons learned from living through such a significant moment in history. Let's meet our guests for this oral history of the COVID-19 pandemic at UK and in the Commonwealth.   Jenn Alonso has been at UK HealthCare for 13 years and has worked in the medicine intensive care unit (MICU) as a registered nurse since 2014. As a MICU nurse, she works alongside a team of physicians, nurses, therapists and other providers to take care of some of the most critically ill patients who come to UK HealthCare. Alonso was working in the MICU the day UK's first COVID-19 patient was admitted and was directly involved in frontline care for the sickest COVID-19 patients day in and day out.   Kim Blanton, D.N.P., is the chief nursing officer for UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital. Blanton began her nursing career at UK in 1998 in the neuro-trauma ICU and worked her way up through several nursing positions, including rapid response nursing, working as a division charge nurse and managing the cardiovascular stepdown unit. After briefly leaving UK to help create and run an ICU at a local rural hospital, she returned in 2011 as a hospital operations administrator before becoming the UK HealthCare enterprise director for Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) and Quality and Safety. Blanton was serving in her IPAC role when the COVID-19 pandemic began and was instrumental in UK's COVID-19 response: She helped bring home UK students from abroad, called COVID-19 patients to help them navigate their care and quarantine, developed plans and processes for patient surges and PPE needs, and much more.   Kevin Hatton, M.D., Ph.D., is the chief medical officer for UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital. An anesthesiologist by training, he earned both his medical degree and doctorate of philosophydegree from UK. Including his time in residency, Dr. Hatton has worked at UK HealthCare for 21 years, serving in a variety of leadership roles in anesthesiology in critical care medicineprimarily for neurology and cardiovascular ICUs. When the pandemic began, he was serving as senior medical director for critical care services as well as was interim director for ECMO services. Initially, Hatton's role focused on training and preparing the anesthesia critical care team to help provide care for non-COVID ICU patients, as much of the medicine ICU staff's time was spent caring for COVID-positive inpatients. ECMO, the highest form of life support, is a machine that takes over function of a patient's damaged heart and/or lungs by removing a patient's blood, oxygenating it, and returning it into the body. Though ECMO is used on a daily basis at UK HealthCare, its use skyrocketed during the pandemic as patients whose lungs were severely damaged by the virus needed this highest form of life support. As interim director for ECMO services, Hatton and his team had to rapidly develop protocols and processes to use the limited number of ECMO machines to help the most patients possible.   Ashley Montgomery-Yates, M.D., has been physician in the UK Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine since 2013. As a critical care physician, she works primarily in the MICU setting taking care of the sickest patients – people on ventilators, with multi-organ failure, post-operative complications, and more. In 2013, she launched UK HealthCare's ICURecovery Clinic, which helps patients who have been in the ICU navigate the follow-up care and resources they need to recover. At the time, UK HealthCare's ICU Recovery Clinic was just one of three in the nation. Montgomery-Yates is currently the senior vice chair for the Department of Internal Medicine. When the pandemic began, she had recently become the interim chief medical officer for inpatient and emergency services. In this role and as an ICU physician, Montgomery-Yates and her colleagues were heavily involved in the day-to-day care of inpatients with COVID-19. She was part of the team that launched UK's successful Mass Vaccination Clinic out at Kroger Field, and her ICU teams also helped guide the creation of UK HealthCare's brand-new MICU, which opened January 2024.   Meg Pyper is a division charge nurse with the UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital Emergency Department and has been with UK HealthCare Emergency Medicine since 2010. As a charge nurse, her role is like air traffic control for the ED — taking calls from EMS and local hospitals about incoming patients and transfers, determining what services that patient will need upon arrival, and notifying interdisciplinary team members to be prepared when those patients arrive. As a nurse, she was drawn to emergency medicine after seeing her favorite nurse mentors be “the calm in the chaos.” Pyper began in this role just weeks before the pandemic arrived in Kentucky, and she and her team were the first line of care COVID patients received when they arrived at UK Chandler Hospital.   Lindsay Ragsdale, M.D., is the chief medical officer for Kentucky Children's Hospital and chief of the Division of Pediatric Palliative Care. Since arriving at UK in 2013, she has worked to build a robust program that helps seriously ill young patients and their families by caring for them holistically – looking at their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being, and helping them navigate the experience of being severely ill.  Ragsdale became the KCH CMO in 2021, right when the COVID-19 delta variant was beginning to affect children much more than previous variants had. She helped set up both the pediatric monoclonal antibody clinic that provided infusions to help protect high-risk pediatric patients, as well as the successful pediatric vaccine clinic, which provided COVID-19 vaccines for children in a playful, engaging environment.   Rob Sprang is the director of Kentucky TeleCare, a role he's held at UK since 1996. UK first began using telehealth services in 1995. Since then, telehealth has grown by leaps and bounds, but its use skyrocketed during the pandemic. Earlier days of telehealth were usually done facility-to-facility — however, the vastly improved technology and public acceptance of telehealth, along with new, more relaxed regulatory laws around its use has allowed telehealth to explode in popularity. When the pandemic hit Kentucky, Sprang and his team — along with countless ambulatory providers and staff – worked 24/7 for more than a week to get UK HealthCare clinics set up to offer telehealth so that patients could still see their providers without needing to go into the hospital or clinic. Telehealth was a critical element in helping to protect both patients and providers from potential exposure to COVID-19.   Vince Venditto, Ph.D., is an associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences in the UK College of Pharmacy with a background in chemistry, drug delivery, and vaccine development. In the early days of the pandemic, his work in blood analysis – looking for biomarkers for cardiovascular disease in up to 1,500 samples at a time – was adapted to do mass testing for COVID antibodies as a means of diagnosis. After PCR tests became the gold standard for diagnosing the disease, his work shifted again — this time to working with local pharmacies for surveillance of COVID out in Kentucky communities. Post-COVID, this project has evolved to include other infectious diseases and inflammatory conditions, and it focuses on increasing access to health care through Kentucky's network of pharmacies. It also has a new name: Pharmacy-based Recruitment Opportunities To Enhance Community Testing and Surveillance (PROTECTS). Venditto co-directs this project along with Brooke Hudspeth, Pharm.D., an associate professor of pharmacy practice and science. Venditto is also part of The Consortium for Understanding and Reducing Infectious Diseases in Kentucky (CURE-KY), which fosters multidisciplinary collaborations to address the burden of infectious diseases in the Commonwealth and beyond. This consortium was built on the heels of UK's COVID-19 Unified Research Experts (CURE) Alliance, which was quickly assembled in 2020 to support a full range of COVID-related research. -- Behind the Blue is available via a variety of podcast providers, including iTunes and Spotify. Known for its scratch-made chicken fingers and signature sauce, Guthrie's aims to blend its heritage with Marietta's evolving culture. The drive-thru operates daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., offering hand-breaded chicken fingers, cole slaw, fries, Texas toast, and their famous sauce. This new location will create about 35 jobs. Bethel Christian Academy Expansion Plan The Cobb County Board of Commissioners will review Mt. Bethel Christian Academy's expansion master plan during a zoning hearing. The plan aims to replace temporary classrooms with permanent buildings and relocate sports facilities on its high school campus, which can accommodate up to 625 students. The academy, independent of Mt. Bethel Church, faces a lease termination for its lower and middle schools, necessitating new facilities by 2028. Proposed changes include new academic buildings, improved traffic access, and relocated sports facilities, sparking opposition from local residents concerned about disruption and lack of detailed plans. Commissioner JoAnn Birrell plans a campus walkthrough before the hearing. STORY 3: 'You Deserve It': Veteran Detainees Presented with Resources at Cobb Jail Cobb County Sheriff Deputy Nedra Handia discovered numerous resources for veterans, including the Cobb County Veterans Accountability and Treatment Court and The Warrior Alliance, after connecting with Vietnam veteran Daniel Hydrick. Vendors like Two Crafty Ladies of Georgia and Samantha Raeburn offered unique gifts and experiences, such as handcrafted decorations and "blind date with a book" packages. The event, supported by sponsors, featured fair rides and food vendors, making it a festive tradition for local families. STORY 5: No. 10: Cobb Schools Nixes $50 Million Event Center The Cobb County Board of Education canceled plans for a $50 million event center in July, following Superintendent Chris Ragsdale's recommendation due to economic concerns reminiscent of pre-2008 recession indicators. The board voted 6-0 to halt the project, initially approved in March 2023, which faced criticism for its cost and lack of detailed planning. Critics included board member Becky Sayler and the citizen group Watching the Funds — Cobb. The group has grown, with members sharing stories of delayed packages, including essential items like medication. Despite FedEx's statement about efforts to resolve delays, many customers remain dissatisfied, expressing their concerns on social media. Evans now avoids using FedEx for non-express shipments, citing ongoing unresolved issues at the Austell hub. Owner Chris Rimby designed the venue to host families and friends, featuring an outdoor patio, greenspace, and a stage for events. From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, December 13th and I'm Keith Ippolito. Ragsdale Tells Lawmakers No to Phone Ban, Yes to THC Crackdown Superintendent Chris Ragsdale of Cobb County School District stated he won’t impose a cellphone ban, trusting teachers to manage classrooms. This contrasts with Marietta City Schools, where Superintendent Grant Rivera implemented a middle school ban on cellphones and smartwatches, managed via locked pouches, which received positive feedback. Ragsdale supports a flexible, school-specific approach, citing cellphones’ educational benefits. He voiced concern over student access to e-cigarettes and THC, urging stricter regulations and highlighting the severe legal consequences of THC possession. He also called for harsher penalties for school threat makers, citing the disruptions caused by over 80 false threats this year. To enhance safety, Ragsdale partnered with private intelligence firm Servius Group without board approval, stirring controversy. Though he described the partnership as critical for safety, some questioned its financial transparency. Meanwhile, Sen. Kay Kirkpatrick offered collaboration on stricter THC regulations to further safeguard students. For more news about our community, visit mdjonline.com. Chad kicks off the session by introducing himself and thanking the audience. He sets the stage for the conversation: how followers of Jesus can think critically and engage effectively with the world around them. He introduces a framework called the "cultural matrix," explaining how Christians approach culture along two axes: being "in the world" but "not of the world." Ragsdale describes different postures: accommodation (adjusting to culture) and hostility (opposing culture), noting both are still rooted within the world. He contrasts these with anti-culture (like the Amish, who isolate) and counter-culture (those who create alternative communities). These stances aren't wrong on their own but become problematic when they turn into rigid, inflexible approaches. Most people, Ragsdale says, fall somewhere between these extremes, combining approaches like quietism (accommodation + isolation), activism (counter-culture + hostility), and evangelism (counter-culture + accommodation). The key is flexibility—adapting to context while maintaining biblical balance, avoiding a one-size-fits-all mentality. Daniel McCoy then steps in, emphasizing the importance of creating a better culture as part of the Christian mission. He contrasts the destructive nature of the devil with God's creativity, which restores and unites. Creativity, McCoy explains, reflects God's work, combining virtues like courage and compassion to transcend the binary choices the world offers. He uses examples like parenting and church worship to show how Christians can integrate traditional and contemporary elements to build something more beautiful. During the Q&A, Ragsdale and McCoy address how these cultural postures relate to apologetics and the balance of grace and truth. Ragsdale emphasizes that apologetics should focus on addressing deeper hurts rather than simply winning arguments. He also stresses the need for fully integrating both grace and truth, sharing personal stories to illustrate how to live out these principles. They also touch on trends in evangelicalism, noting how younger Christians often lean towards activism. Ragsdale cautions against tribalism, urging ongoing self-examination and thoughtful engagement instead of falling into divisive either-or thinking. In closing, Ragsdale encourages the audience to keep asking questions, challenging their own views and others', and pursuing a more nuanced understanding of biblical truth. In summary, this episode offers practical wisdom for Christians on engaging culture thoughtfully and biblically, urging a balance of grace and truth, creativity, and a spirit of inquiry. From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, November 15th and I'm Keith Ippolito. Cobb Schools Super Tells Safety Plan Critics to 'Take a Break' Cobb County School Superintendent Chris Ragsdale urged critics of the district's safety plan to "take a break" from political rhetoric following the recent election, which maintained a Republican majority on the school board. Ragsdale highlighted the board's continued support for the district's vision and safety measures, including a controversial partnership with a private security firm, Servius Group, to monitor students using military intelligence tactics. This initiative, prompted by recent school shootings, aims to address digital threats and safety concerns. Critics, including state Rep. David Wilkerson, have raised concerns about potential profiling and lack of transparency. Ragsdale defended the plan, emphasizing its necessity for evolving safety strategies and denying allegations of profiling. Despite some board members' calls for more transparency, Ragsdale maintained that disclosing detailed safety measures could compromise student safety. The district continues to invest in various safety technologies and personnel to ensure a secure educational environment. For more news about our community, visit mdjonline.com. From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, October 18th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. Six More Books Pulled from Cobb Schools Bringing Total to 32 Cobb County School District has removed six more books from its libraries, totaling 32 books banned due to explic it content concerns. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale has consistently updated the board on these removals, emphasizing the exclusion of materials deemed lewd or sexually explicit. The review process involves retired educators, though details about the committee remain unclear. Of the 32 books banned, 22 are also removed from Marietta schools. The debate over book bans has been contentious, with Republican board members supporting the removals and Democrats criticizing the process. Allegations of discrimination have arisen, particularly concerning books by minority authors or those highlighting LGBTQ experiences. A civil rights complaint was filed against the district, accusing it of discriminatory censorship. Ragsdale denies these claims, asserting the focus is on content, not targeting specific groups. The controversy began in 2023 when a conservative blog highlighted certain titles in district libraries. For more news about our community, visit mdjonline.com.
