Send us Fan MailEver since Forward-Facing Sonar entered the fishing tournament scene there has been a decline in competitors in most of Montana's fishing tournaments. That's why the Gallatin Chapter of Montana Walleyes Unlimited decided to add something new to this year's Canyon Ferry Walleye Festival. That is what your host of the Montana Outdoor Podcast, Downrigger Dale is talking about with Tournament Director Eve Parrow. So, what did they add you ask? A choice! That's right, they created two competition categories that they call the Tournament Class and the new Social Class. As Rigger put it; “This just might solve a problem that many anglers have had with fishing tournaments these days!”. The Tournament Class, which has an entry fee of $420, will be for those who love to use the new high tech Forward-Facing Sonar or just don't mind competing against those who do, and the Social Class which has a much lower entry fee of just $200 will be exclusively for those who will not use Forward-Facing Sonar, basically for those who want to compete against those who compete with low tech or no tech. Of course, there are a specific details and rules that go with these new competitive categories and that is why you for sure should watch or listen to this week's podcast. Tourney Director Eve Parrow does a great job of covering what you need to know. Eve also talks about all the ways that the whole family can have a blast at this year's Canyon Ferry Walleye Festival! In fact, one tidbit we found super interesting is that in the Social Class up to 5 people can be in a competing boat. Course, only the two-person team can fish but the rest can have some fun cheering them on in the boat! And there is even more things that just might surprise you so, for sure watch or listen to this podcast. On this special bass fishing episode of Fishing the DMV, we revisit one of the most heartfelt and inspiring fishing stories in our channel history. In August, we lost Charlie Taylor at 86 — a bass fishing legend whose impact on the freshwater fishing community will live on. Charlie was the founder of Lots-A-Luck Bassmasters and New Horizon Bass Anglers, and was instrumental in creating the New Horizon Bass Anglers Youth Foundation, which hosts one of the longest-running youth fishing derbies in the country at Lake Fairfax — a must-see kids fishing event for anglers of all ages. Charlie's passion for bass fishing techniques, fishing education, and mentoring young anglers made him a beloved fixture in the community. He loved sharing fishing tips, telling incredible fishing tales, and helping both beginners and seasoned anglers improve their game — from bass boat strategy to lure selection, casting techniques, and more. Charlie also made memorable appearances at the Dale City Fishing and Flea Market Show — an annual fishing expo held Saturday, January 31 from 8 AM to 1 PM at the local fire department — and his presence will be dearly missed. In this episode, I'm honored to share my interview with Charlie Taylor, where he recounts how his love for fishing began back in 1970. As a supervisor with 7-Eleven, a store manager told him he needed a hobby… and that conversation sparked a lifelong bass fishing obsession that defined his life. This episode is a tribute to a man whose dedication to bass fishing tips, youth fishing education, and the angling community helped shape the lives of countless fishermen and women. Whether you're here for freshwater fishing content, bass fishing techniques, or inspirational fishing stories, this episode honors a true icon of the sport.Don't miss this legacy-filled bass fishing interview and celebration of one of the greats in our community.

While largemouth anglers sight fish bedding bass in the shallows, what happens when smallmouth spawn in 10+ feet of clear water where wind and sun make visual detection nearly impossible? In this fascinating episode of The Bass Vault, we dive into the history and application of the Flogger (or bathyscope) - a cone-shaped underwater viewing device that's been revolutionizing smallmouth fishing up north and on the Great Lakes. Originally developed in Europe for underwater viewing, this 3-foot telescope-like tool with a glass bottom plate allows anglers to peer straight down through the water column, cutting through surface glare and chop to spot bedding smallmouth in deep, clear water. Learn how this non-electronic tool complements Forward Facing Sonar by providing visual confirmation of what you're actually looking at, helping experienced users determine the exact size of bass on beds. While you can't fish and use it simultaneously, and it requires leaning over the boat and plenty of practice, the Flogger gives serious smallmouth anglers a significant edge during the spawn when these bronze backs are holding in deeper water beyond traditional sight fishing depths.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bass-cast-radio--1838782/support.Become a Patreon memebet now for less then a pack of worms you can support Bass Cast Radio as well as get each epsiode a day early & commercial free. Ryan compiled and analyzed data from the entire 2025 Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour season, comparing tournament outcomes, trends, and outliers between anglers who relied on sonar and those who didn't. We break down what the numbers reveal, discuss how technology is shaping the sport, and uncover insights every angler can learn from.If you've ever wondered just how much FFS is impacting bass fishing—or whether the controversy is backed by real data—this is an episode you won't want to miss.

For the 2026 Bassmaster Elite Series season, anglers voted for limitations of Forward-Facing Sonar. What limitations? Some can say screen size or number of transducers, others wanted half the schedule it be allowed and the other half be restricted. How do we choose which events allow and restrict the use of FFS? A good ole fashioned coin flip determining how the 5 to 4 split would be determined.#bassmaster #fishing #eliteseries

Join the discussion as we break down the controversial decision to split the 2026 Bassmaster Elite Series season, with some tournaments allowing FFS and others banning it completely. We'll reveal which tournaments are FFS-free, including Lake Champlain and Santee Cooper, and which ones will still allow it, like the St. Lawrence River and Lake Murray. This change has huge implications for professional anglers. We also cover the latest retirements from two icons of the sport, Skeet Reese and Bernie Schultz, and discuss their legendary careers. Plus, we dive deep into the angler cuts from both the Bassmaster Elites and the MLF Bass Pro Tour, listing the pros who didn't requalify and debating what's next for them in the world of tournament bass fishing. Forward Facing Sonar / Fair Chase - Modern Carnivore Podcast - (EP:051) This episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast was recorded at the 2025 Backcountry Hunters & Anglers North Country Ice Breaker. The event provided an opportunity to capture insights from three experienced outdoorsmen on the topic of fair chase. Specifically, we focused on forward facing sonar technology and how it is changing the fishing experience (and potentially catch rates). Publications like Outdoor News have been reporting on this topic for years. Some state agencies have started to address the topic directly, but many are holding tight and waiting to see where things go. Let us know if you have thoughts on how this technology can be best used, and what restrictions (if any) should be put on it.     Guests on today's podcast include: Mike Hehner from Linder Media Productions Greg Kvale - Board Member of Minnesota Backcountry Hunters & Anglers David Lien is a co-founder of the Minnesota Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Other Posts You May Like https://modcarn.com/conservation-mcp-ep028/ https://modcarn.com/hardwater-hunters-go-darkhouse-spearfishing/ https://modcarn.com/hunting-still-relevant-mcp040/
