The fine wine world is certainly mysterious and exclusive, but how "dangerously culty" is it? Drunk on Cristie's insights, we're ready to find out... Today, we chat with sommelier/wine expert/wine educator, Cristie Norman, about debunking wine myths and how you "should" speak about wine to sound smarter than you really are. And she spins the one D word that scared her the most, Dildo. Summer really pulls back the curtain on Hugh Hefner, the playboy mansion and her time as a playmate.Hosted by Alyshia Ochse (@alyshiaochse) and Summer Altice (@summeraltice).Guest: Cristie Norman (@cristienorman_somm)This show is powered by Action Park Media Group. This episode is sponsored by Grassl Glass, Pyramid Valley Vineyards, Liquid Asset Cellars, and Cann Social Tonic.
Imagine you're at one of the most upscale restaurants in Beverly Hills. You want to order a glass of wine and the sommelier walks over. Who do you picture showing up to your table? You're probably not picturing a 26-year old Asian woman recommending the best wine to pair with your meal. Unfortunately, the world of wine still has a long way to go when it comes to sommelier diversity. That's exactly the reality that today's guest has found herself in throughout her incredible journey of becoming a force to be reckoned with in the wine industry. In this episode, I have the pleasure of interviewing Cristie Norman, a Certified Sommelier and Wine Enthusiast's 2020 Educator of the Year. She started her professional wine journey at the young age of 19 (yes, you read that right!) and is all about shattering glass ceilings in the traditional wine world.Even more impressive is how Cristie has created opportunities for herself and others during the pandemic. Her innovative thinking and can-do attitude has served her peers greatly during these dire times.Cristie's story is a stellar example of how you can use your passion to bring a community together. I truly hope her story will inspire you to see the opportunities in front of you and create something of your own. You just might be able to help others like you along the way.SUBSCRIBE & REVIEW:Did this episode inspire you? Did you learn something new? New Wine in Old Bottles: How Cristie Norman is Changing the Wine Industry We shouldn't feel the need to fit in when we were born to stand out. Every person has a vision of how they want their life to be. We shouldn't allow societal norms and standards to prevent us from realizing our dreams. It's all about what makes us fired up and, ultimately, happy. In this episode, we're joined by Cristie Norman, a young Asian woman in an industry with few people of color. She shares how skill overcomes the expectations of people around you. She also shares her advocacies of being yourself, impacting communities, and not taking life too seriously. Tune in to the episode to learn how to get comfortable being different and create social impact! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Find out how Cristie stood out as a young Asian woman in the conservative wine industry. Learn all about wine, the industry, and Cristie's experience of being a sommelier. Discover Cristie's grand vision for wine and how she is making it real. Resources The United Sommeliers Foundation Adulting With Alcohol The Online Wine Course My first book, Relationship Ready: How I Stopped Fucking Randos and Started Cupcaking My Soulmate, is available on Amazon and Audible. Grab your copy now! Episode Highlights Cristie's Journey To become a full-time server, she had to take a sommelier exam. She landed a job as a sommelier in Spago, Beverly Hills. She wasn't emotionally prepared for the experience due to the pressure of selecting the perfect wine out of a wide selection and the fact that she's a person of color. It took her three years to become completely comfortable with her job. The Wine Choosing Process Cristie's goal is to be able to get to the wine customers want in just three questions. It takes a lot of active listening and being able to navigate through a customer's description. Listen to the full episode to hear Cristie's nerve-wracking story about dropping a decanter on a Friday night! On Impostor Syndrome As a woman of color in the industry, she felt the need to prove that she was the best. Cristie felt the need to put in a lot of time and effort before she could say that she's an experienced sommelier. She met a middle-aged man who walked with an air of confidence even if he had superficial wine knowledge, and realized that confidence matters just as much as being an expert. People can sense your lack of confidence and will doubt you. Memorable Moments as a Woman in the Wine Industry Having to choose an expensive purchase for others could be intimidating, and sometimes customers frankly ask for a male sommelier. The first time two old white male customers commended her choice was an unforgettable experience. She has had her fair share of rude customers as well. What Does a Sommelier Do? A sommelier is an expert who helps customers find and choose wine. For Cristie, any wine steward is a sommelier regardless of certification. Cristie thinks the definition of “sommelier” should expand. Sommeliers should be confident in their selections, even if the customer isn't comfortable with the sommelier's choice. The Customer Experience Cristie appreciates when customers are candid about their wine knowledge. Customers should be honest about their desired price point. Cristie would rather undersell and give consumers value for their money than upsell. The United Sommeliers Foundation The charity's purpose was to provide financial grants to sommeliers affected by crises. The foundation has raised $800,000, and their goal was to distribute the money raised as quickly as possible. Sommeliers will be the first to be cut in the struggling restaurant industry. The Online Wine Course Her experience in Spago proved that even rich people had misconceptions about wine. She wanted to educate people about wine before they enter a restaurant. She created an affordable online wine course to educate people about wine. Cristie's Vision for the Wine Industry Even though the industry is historically conservative, she stays true to herself and allows the world of wine to be a fun and accessible place. Cristie believes sommeliers should be measured by their impact on the consumer rather than trivial facts knowledge. People are more attracted to cocktails due to a lack of understanding of wine. Final Advice Write down your life vision and what makes you happy. Remember that your goals in life are all possible. Gain self-confidence by setting daily goals and checking them off. Listen to the full episode to learn about Cristie's daily routine and personal hobbies! 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode “It takes having more people of color, more women in our industry in positions of power and authority, where people will see ‘Oh, you know, the wine industry is not just white male, and that you can have a sommelier who's a young black woman.'” “The people who actually know about wine will not make you feel stupid. It's the people who barely have any wine knowledge that are insecure about their own knowledge.” “I do crazy stuff because I know that there's a lot of young women that are in the wine industry that see me - I did a bikini competition, I like being funny, like making jokes and showing people that you don't have to be so serious all the time.” “I wish that sommeliers were measured by their impact that they had on their community and consumers rather than how many facts that they can rattle off about random grape varieties.” “Write your vision down of what you would want your ideal life to be like, and know that 100% is possible 100% of the time.” About Cristie Cristie Norman is a wine expert, certified sommelier, and entrepreneur. She is the President of the United Sommelier Foundation and was recently named the youngest person on the Wine Enthusiast's 40 Under 40 Tastemakers List. Through her YouTube series Adulting with Alcohol or her online wine course for beginners, she strives to make the world of wine accessible and fun for everyone. As a young woman of color, Cristie continues to change the perception of the world of wine around the world. You can follow her on Instagram, Facebook, or Youtube, or visit her website. Being friends with one of LA's smart and gorgeous Somm's - definitely has its benefits to stealing her away from Spago's for a minute. Beverly Hills can wait! I want to know what Cristie has planned, and so should you. New wine education videos, a clothing company, what can't she do. I had a heavy editing hand to get this to a downloadable 33 minutes of non stop information. I hope you enjoy. Thank you iTunes, GooglePlay, and Spotify for picking this station up! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

This week Cristie Norman (Adulting With Alcohol, sommelier at Spago) makes the trek from her Beverly Hills workplace to share her whines! The hip sip tip from Shaughn is Latitude 50 North, a trocken sekt spatburgunder rosé aka a dry sparkling pinot noir rosé!Ellen got to try some Paso Robles Roussanne and a Syrah from TOP Winery with the winemaker herself! Learn about the ethos behind these Los Angeleno winemakers!Cristie's whine is about bad guests in restaurants. As a somm who started at Spago at 21, Cristie has faced a lot of side eye from customers who can't believe that she is in charge of wine!Shaughn and Ellen pair her wine with a spirit that soothes the souls of many a restaurant industry insider: Fernet Branca! It's a bitter amaro from Italy. It turns out Fernet is an emergency beverage at Spago too!Cristie also shares how she got into the wine world at such a young age. It all started with tea. Now she pours Petrus. She gets into horror stories of condescending guests and nightmare wine pairings! The lightning round covers when Fernet was introduced, Fernet cocktails, the Fernet alcohol level. and who drinks it the most!
