A bushel of challenges have confronted family farmers in recent decades. At the same time, farmers mаrkets have sprouted up in towns and neighborhoods across Indiana, the popularity of their "buy local" appeal undeniable. Nick Carter, 38, is knee-deep in both family farms and farmers markets. He grew up on a multi-generational family farm near Russiaville; today, he lives with his wife and three young children on a farm in Marion County. Nick, who will be Nelson's guest, is the CEO and co-founder of Market Wagon, a rapidly-growing, Indianapolis-based business that creates online farmers markets. The enterprise, which has created web-based farmers markets in more than 25 cities across 14 states, enables consumers to browse and buy online from growers and vendors in their region. The rapid growth of Market Wagon has generated a flurry of media interest in the business. In interviews with the press, Nick has noted that, beginning during the 1970s and '80s, family farmers increasingly faced pressures to sell to corporations or consolidate. In other words, "Get big or get out," as Nick has summed up the dilemma faced by family farmers. He told the Indianapolis Business Journal - which last month listed him among its 40 Under 40 roster of emerging young leaders - that his grandfather built the farm where he grew up. But his family's farming roots stretch even deeper: Six generations of his ancestors have farmed in the Howard County area. During our show, Nick will discuss how the industrialization of farming has changed the ways that consumers purchase food. He also will talk about the importance of locally grown food, which has motivated so many communities to establish farmers markets. In central Indiana, they include the Carmel Farmers Market, Broad Ripple Farmers Market, Garfield Park Farmers Market and the Original Farmers Market near Indianapolis City Market downtown. "I think consumers are hungry to know where their food is coming from and how it's produced," Nick told Winsight Grocery Business, an online magazine that covers grocery retailers. He has emphasized that Market Wagon isn't a competitor of farmers markets, but instead augments them by providing online access to consumers who are unable for a range of reasons - from proximity to schedule conflicts - to shop at a local farmers market. Asked by the IBJ how he enjoys spending his downtime, Nick replied that farming is his refuge: "When you spend your day in meetings, working on financial forecasts and meeting with investors, there is something therapeutic about shoveling manure out of a chicken coop, or weeding a garden bed, or picking sweet corn."

New Wine in Old Bottles: How Cristie Norman is Changing the Wine Industry We shouldn't feel the need to fit in when we were born to stand out. Every person has a vision of how they want their life to be. We shouldn't allow societal norms and standards to prevent us from realizing our dreams. It's all about what makes us fired up and, ultimately, happy. In this episode, we're joined by Cristie Norman, a young Asian woman in an industry with few people of color. She shares how skill overcomes the expectations of people around you. She also shares her advocacies of being yourself, impacting communities, and not taking life too seriously. Tune in to the episode to learn how to get comfortable being different and create social impact! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Find out how Cristie stood out as a young Asian woman in the conservative wine industry. Learn all about wine, the industry, and Cristie's experience of being a sommelier. Discover Cristie's grand vision for wine and how she is making it real. Resources The United Sommeliers Foundation Adulting With Alcohol The Online Wine Course My first book, Relationship Ready: How I Stopped Fucking Randos and Started Cupcaking My Soulmate, is available on Amazon and Audible. Grab your copy now! Episode Highlights Cristie's Journey To become a full-time server, she had to take a sommelier exam. She landed a job as a sommelier in Spago, Beverly Hills. She wasn't emotionally prepared for the experience due to the pressure of selecting the perfect wine out of a wide selection and the fact that she's a person of color. It took her three years to become completely comfortable with her job. The Wine Choosing Process Cristie's goal is to be able to get to the wine customers want in just three questions. It takes a lot of active listening and being able to navigate through a customer's description. Listen to the full episode to hear Cristie's nerve-wracking story about dropping a decanter on a Friday night! On Impostor Syndrome As a woman of color in the industry, she felt the need to prove that she was the best. Cristie felt the need to put in a lot of time and effort before she could say that she's an experienced sommelier. She met a middle-aged man who walked with an air of confidence even if he had superficial wine knowledge, and realized that confidence matters just as much as being an expert. People can sense your lack of confidence and will doubt you. Memorable Moments as a Woman in the Wine Industry Having to choose an expensive purchase for others could be intimidating, and sometimes customers frankly ask for a male sommelier. The first time two old white male customers commended her choice was an unforgettable experience. She has had her fair share of rude customers as well. What Does a Sommelier Do? A sommelier is an expert who helps customers find and choose wine. For Cristie, any wine steward is a sommelier regardless of certification. Cristie thinks the definition of “sommelier” should expand. Sommeliers should be confident in their selections, even if the customer isn't comfortable with the sommelier's choice. The Customer Experience Cristie appreciates when customers are candid about their wine knowledge. Customers should be honest about their desired price point. Cristie would rather undersell and give consumers value for their money than upsell. The United Sommeliers Foundation The charity's purpose was to provide financial grants to sommeliers affected by crises. The foundation has raised $800,000, and their goal was to distribute the money raised as quickly as possible. Sommeliers will be the first to be cut in the struggling restaurant industry. The Online Wine Course Her experience in Spago proved that even rich people had misconceptions about wine. She wanted to educate people about wine before they enter a restaurant. She created an affordable online wine course to educate people about wine. Cristie's Vision for the Wine Industry Even though the industry is historically conservative, she stays true to herself and allows the world of wine to be a fun and accessible place. Cristie believes sommeliers should be measured by their impact on the consumer rather than trivial facts knowledge. People are more attracted to cocktails due to a lack of understanding of wine. Final Advice Write down your life vision and what makes you happy. Remember that your goals in life are all possible. Gain self-confidence by setting daily goals and checking them off. Listen to the full episode to learn about Cristie's daily routine and personal hobbies! 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode “It takes having more people of color, more women in our industry in positions of power and authority, where people will see ‘Oh, you know, the wine industry is not just white male, and that you can have a sommelier who's a young black woman.'” “The people who actually know about wine will not make you feel stupid. It's the people who barely have any wine knowledge that are insecure about their own knowledge.” “I do crazy stuff because I know that there's a lot of young women that are in the wine industry that see me - I did a bikini competition, I like being funny, like making jokes and showing people that you don't have to be so serious all the time.” “I wish that sommeliers were measured by their impact that they had on their community and consumers rather than how many facts that they can rattle off about random grape varieties.” “Write your vision down of what you would want your ideal life to be like, and know that 100% is possible 100% of the time.” About Cristie Cristie Norman is a wine expert, certified sommelier, and entrepreneur. She is the President of the United Sommelier Foundation and was recently named the youngest person on the Wine Enthusiast's 40 Under 40 Tastemakers List. Through her YouTube series Adulting with Alcohol or her online wine course for beginners, she strives to make the world of wine accessible and fun for everyone. As a young woman of color, Cristie continues to change the perception of the world of wine around the world. You can follow her on Instagram, Facebook, or Youtube, or visit her website. Jeremy Parker is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and serial entrepreneur. He is the Co-founder and CEO of Swag.com, the best place for companies to buy quality promotional products that you'll actually want to keep. They work with 5,000+ companies including Facebook, Google, Amazon, Netflix, Spotify and Tik Tok. They are #218 on the 2020 Inc 500 (fastest growing companies in the US). Jeremy was also named by CrainsNY as one of the 40Under40. Most passionate about I’m working on com. We provide custom promo products that people actually want to keep. We launched the company in early 2016 and we are the fastest growing promotional products company in the country. We were just named among the 500 fast-growing companies in the US—the “number 218” fastest-growing company in the States. Our main passion at this point is taking the easy and streamlined buying experience that we developed, not only to buy swag but also to distribute swag and send swag to all remote addresses. Especially now with the pandemic, people feel so disconnected. The difference with our swag platform is that, from the first day, we’ve focused on the millennial customers who expect everything to be fully automated and very easy to work with. With time, our customers asked us to not only hold the process of buying and delivering their product but also store it for them and shift it to each of their customers directly, as well as monitor their inventory. That’s what we’ve worked on in the last two years. Right now, when most companies are working from home and everybody is disconnected, our feeling is that our distribution platform will be very useful. Today many leading brands are working with our platform, from Facebook and Google and Amazon to Netflix and Spotify and TikTok to smaller startups. Our platform scales with the businesses as they grow. Jeremy’s career and story I’m actually a filmmaker. I even won the Audience Award at the 2006 Vail Film Festival for a documentary I made with my brother. After we won this award, I realized my passion wasn’t to become a filmmaker. After college, I started my first business. I had no experience in businesses and I thought that starting a T-shirt company would be easy and focused and a good opportunity to learn how to run a business. It sounds simple but you need to learn manufacturing, and how to run a website, and how to do marketing and PR and customer service. I started this T-shirt company and became better and better. It helped me find out what I’m good at. I became good at user experience design and branding. That’s what I fell in love with. After the T-shirt company, I worked for MV Sport, one of the largest players in the promotional product space. I was introduced to the promotional products market at the age of 22 and everything in this space was done very manually. It was all about catalogs and presentation decks and phone calls to close the sale. From my experience showing was always focused online, I didn’t want to speak with people while I purchased something. Over the 10 ten years, I watched the promotional products space very closely and realized that the market got bigger and bigger but the buyer changed. The buyer now is a millennial and the platforms were not built for today's buyers. That was kind of an a-ha moment for me: to build a platform with a great user experience that will answer the needs of today’s buyers. And that was the initial idea for Swag. In the first year, we didn’t build any platform. We focused on learning from our customers about what they need and want. The knowledge we got at the beginning gave us a shining light on what kind of platform we should build. Jeremy’s best advice for entrepreneurs For entrepreneurs, I think consistency is key. Entrepreneurship takes every single day working very hard for a specific goal. You should stay in the game and constantly learn from your...
