“Hey everyone, it's Paul Kay here from Wine Talks, and let me tell you… buying wine? It's more than just grabbing a bottle off the shelf. It's emotional! Just like our guest from this episode, Madeline Puckette, said—‘purchasing wine is an emotional experience.' And she's not wrong. So, how do we connect all those emotions to wine? Storytelling.” “You know, I've been in this business for a long time, and let me tell you something—it's not just about the taste or the price. It's about the story behind it—the winemaker who poured their soul into it, the vineyard where the grapes grew, and yes, even the vintage itself.” “And as Madeline put it, storytelling is like pulling at those heartstrings. It's the thing that makes you pick a certain bottle, not just because it's good, not just because it pairs well, but because it has a story you can't wait to share when you pour it.” “Look, folks, wine isn't just a drink. It's an experience, an adventure waiting to happen! And here's the thing—these stories? They're what make this industry so amazing. It hasn't changed since the beginning of time. Why? Because at the end of the day, a bottle with a story, well… that's the bottle you're going to enjoy the most.” “So the next time you're looking for a bottle, think about the story. Not just where it's from, but who made it, why they made it, and what makes it unique. That's what turns a good bottle of wine into a great memory.” Episode Highlights: Wine as an Emotional Experience: Madeline shares her insights into how purchasing wine is deeply tied to emotions and storytelling. Discover how a bottle of wine can become a beautiful story to savor and enjoy. The Shift in Wine Education: Learn about the evolution of wine education from traditional channels to the digital age. Unlock the secrets behind how palates evolve over time, much like Madeline's journey from her first coterone to a love for Riesling. The Role of Innovation in Wine: Madeline and Paul discuss the challenges and opportunities facing small wineries in today's market. From DTC models to tapping into unique stories, discover how creativity and storytelling pave the way for success. In 2010, Radio Host Adam Montiel combined his longtime love for broadcasting with his, then, new love for wine. He created and produced, ‘The Cork Dorks'. The show was hosted with Adam and his good friend Jeremy. It was the first of its kind. It began focusing on central coast wineries but as the show grew, so did their ability to travel and meet other winemakers they found everywhere from Napa to Bordeaux that adopted that same Central Coast quality of people willing to share their wines, and their stories. As the area grew, soon the show covered everything from spirits, craft beer, cider, cuisine, hospitality, and more. Fast forward to today, the spirit and enthusiasm cultivated with the award winning The Cork Dorks show, is reborn, this time independently, and unfettered by corporate authority leaving it even more free to share the journey of making wine more approachable and fun for everyone. The Rhône Valley of France is famous for its Syrah, Grenache, and Viognier grapes (among others), while Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cab Franc (et al!) are grown in Bordeaux. And these wine grapes have thrived in their respective regions for centuries. But what happens when rising temperatures change the kinds of grapes that can be grown in a particular area? How is the climate crisis changing the way wine is produced? And what can we do as consumers to promote sustainability among winemakers? Paul Wagner is a Viticulture and Winery Technology Instructor at Napa Valley College and Cohost of Bottle Talk with Rick and Paul. He also serves as guest lecturer at multiple universities in Europe and the US and offers several wine-related courses as part of The Great Courses lecture series. On this episode of Reversing Climate Change, Paul joins Ross to explain what attracts him to the artistry and experience of winemaking, exploring what makes wine grapes sweeter than any other fruit and how they give you a sense of both place and time. Paul describes how climate is changing the way wine is made everywhere in the world, discussing what winemakers are doing to avoid rising temperatures and how the climate crisis might influence the evolution of wine in places like Bordeaux and Rhone. Listen in for insight on how climate informs the alcohol content in wine and get Paul's advice for the environmentally conscious on choosing a wine you like—and then finding a winemaker who's working toward carbon neutrality. (Wine is discussed for its own sake for the first twenty or so minutes. If you want to skip right to the intersection with climate, it begins at 24:32.) In our ongoing series featuring Femmes du Vin, we speak with Madeline Puckette, author, co-founder and wine education content creator of the wildly popular Wine Folly. Stemming from her own experience with formal wine education, Madeline decided to take a rather radical departure from formalized pedagogy, working instead within a visual framework to better communicate information to a broader audience. We'll discuss her uniquely unconventional and progressive perspective and how it translates into engaging online and on-page content. We're delighted to have Priya Roa on the program who is co-founder of The Social Herbivore with Master Sommelier Jennifer Huether, and is a vegan food consultant & TV host. Priya is working on the first ever vegan wine and food pairing guidebook hoping to highlight the advantages of a plant-based lifestyle. Her non-intimidating style encourages people to take small steps in a planet-positive direction. These interviews were recorded late last fall at the start of the Femmes du Vin virtual conference series. Femmes du Vin is a grassroots women's organization dedicated to promoting and amplifying the voices of all women in wine. For more information visit: https://www.femmesduvin.org. Just stop right there. I know what you’re thinking. ANOTHER episode about alcohol…that…is…AWESOME! And you’re right, it is awesome. Do you know how many treaties were signed over a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon? All of them. Do you know how many businesses were founded over a carafe of Zinfandel? All of them. Do you know how many statistics I’ve made up while drinking a glass of Sangiovese? None of them, because that would be totally irresponsible. Today’s guest, Madeline Puckette, is the ultimate Renaissance woman. She’s the graphic designer responsible for some of the greatest wine infographcs that have ever been made. She was voted Wine Blogger of the Year at the International Wine and Spirits Competition for her site, Wine Folly. And now, she’s responsible for the #1 selling wine book on Amazon of the same name…and as of my writing this it hasn’t even come out yet! So how, in just a few short years, do you completely take the wine world by storm?
This week we talk to Madeline Puckette of Wine Folly, the amazing wine blog that has brought the art of design to the wine world.
