Dr Merrianne Burtch, Pacific Veterinary Specialists & BirchBark Foundation This is a report to correct the audio not being properly attached! Addison's Disease is a fairly common condition in dogs and horses that results from a lack of steroids being produced by the body. It is the same disease in people and is the opposite of the more common (in dogs) Cushing's Disease, where too many steroids are produced by the animal. This is an almost 14-minute discussion of Addison's with Dr. Merrianne Burtch of Pacific Veterinary Specialists in Capitola and is part of our regular series of discussions of animal health issues.

Appi Preusen, based outside of Chicago, Illinois, is an animal rescue hero and today's guest. Over the past 15 years, on her own initiative and hard work, Appi has helped save at least 700 to 800 dogs and cats. She has formed an informal network of fosters. She doesn't have her own facility, board of directors, famous millionaires, or silent auction fundraisers to help her cause. It's simply she and a dedicated group of people. She's been doing this as long as she could remember, even as a child. Appi gives a wide-ranging overview of fostering 1. Why fostering is important, 2. expectations new fosters should have, 3. matching your activity level with your foster animal's 4. the space requirements for fosters, and 5. the need to foster all types and ages of animals. She also shares some terrific foster / animal rescue stories, including Hector, an older Applehead Chihuahua, and Duke, a Pitbull-Great Dane mix. Part of Rachel's bio: "It’s hard to say when my exact “journey” began with what we now know is Cushing’s Disease. Both my Mom and my doctor believe I’ve had this for years, when I started having period problems, migraines and unexplained weight gain in high school.I can safely say that I started really noticing/documenting this last round of health issues in the spring of 2007. I can remember my first doctor’s visit regarding the onset of this in spring 2006, but the majority of my health issues really began a year later. I’d always suffered from migraines, but only around my menstrual periods. I took birth control to help with that, and it also helped regulate my periods for the majority of my adolescent and young adult life."

Take Me Home - Pet Adoption and Animal Rescue - Pets & Animals on Pet Life Radio (PetLifeRadio.com)
Susan Daffron talks to Gail Montgomery from Almost Home Animal Rescue in Michigan about a six-year old Bichon Frise named Gino who is available for adoption. Gino was found wandering as a stray. His home had been foreclosed upon and his family left him behind. But a kindly neighbor brought Gino to Almost Home where they groomed this fuzzy little white dog and cleaned him up, so he looks like a Bichon again. In the process, they noticed that Gino's hair was thin and that he was constantly hungry and drank a lot of water. So they took Gino to the vet. It turns out that Gino has Cushing's Disease, but fortunately it's the type of Cushing's that is treatable. Gino has been neutered and now gets a little pill in his food every day for his Cushing's. The medication is working well, Gino is feeling great, and the vet expects him to live a long life. Gino is one of those happy dogs who absolutely loves everybody: men, women, kids, cats, and other dogs are all just new friends for him. Right now, Gino is out of the shelter and doing well in his a foster home; he just needs a new family who will love him and let him love them back. We investigated the effect of sodium valproate on plasma ACTH and serum cortisol concentrations in different pathological states of ACTH hypersecretion. Five patients with pituitary dependent Cushing's syndrome, two patients with Nelson's syndrome and five patients with Addison's disease were studied. Neither a single dose nor long term administration of sodium valproate resulted in a significant decrease of plasma ACTH levels in patients with Cushing's disease and Nelson's syndrome. Furthermore, the response of ACTH and cortisol to stimulation with lysine-vasopressin was unaffected during acute and chronic treatment. Patients with Addison's disease showed a slight attenuation of the ACTH response to lysine-vasopressin as compared to placebo but the difference was not statistically significant. In conclusion: sodium valproate does not appear to be effective in controlling ACTH hypersecretion in pituitary dependent Cushing's syndrome.

Three uncommon findings were observed in a case of Cushing's disease due to macroadenoma: no suppression of plasma ACTH during an 8-mg dexamethasone test, a negative corticotropin-releasing factor test, and a normal X-ray of the sella turcica. Despite these findings, the diagnosis of pituitary was confirmed Cushing's syndrome by computerized tomography and a transphenoidal operation.
