The Staircases in the Woods: Chilling Search and Rescue Stories from Reddit
In this episode of The Real ResQ Podcast, special guest host Melissa Quinn is joined by Jason Quinn, U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer #500. We opened the floor to our listeners, asking for their questions and any rescue stories they have been curious to hear. The result? An episode packed with heartfelt stories, emotional rescues, and insightful behind-the-scenes details. Jason shares some of his most memorable and challenging rescues, including a dramatic four-wheeler accident, a surf rescue, and a CPR situation where the patient's wife was standing behind him the entire time. One question dove into Jason's training experiences, and he reveals the story behind Rule #12: Always Pack A Knife. They also talk about the unpredictable things that can happen during training and how it shapes a rescue swimmer's mindset. When asked about his most stressful rescue, Jason recounts a high-pressure mission in the Gulf of Mexico, where he was the hoist operator during a particularly intense flight. They also tackled some fun and lighthearted questions, such as: “Do I prefer being the one hoisting or the guy on the hook?” “Is there a difference in adrenaline levels between live missions and training?” “What's a funny or unexpected moment from one of my missions that always makes me laugh?” “Do I have any pre-mission rituals or good luck charms?” This episode offers a mix of gripping rescue stories, personal reflections, and a few laughs along the way. Tune in for a candid Q&A session that gives you a deeper look into the life of a rescue swimmer. Enjoy! This episode is powered by Vertical HeliCASTS. I can guarantee you that most people don't really understand all that goes into Christmas and even many of those who celebrate the festival of lights, Hanukkah don't really know the story behind the celebration and the Menorah candleholder ... Let's start with Christmas and the story is that we were all lost in walking in darkness and didn't know what to do and we're being held captive, indeed we are hostages... And it doesn't seem that we will ever be rescued. And isn't it ironically appropriate that right now the story of seeking to rescue hostages is a part of the daily news... And instead of celebrating the good news of peace on earth goodwill to men and women we know that that is a hope in a dream because it certainly isn't a reality. Yes indeed if we're going to have peace on earth and goodwill we need someone to come and rescue us, to save us, to turn the lights back on. .. We need a lamp lighter. Well let me tell you the stories and if you'll give me 18 minutes perhaps I can help you get a bigger and better and maybe eventually a happier view so that maybe indeed you will be thinking about an asking for not some gift under the tree or something in your stocking but perhaps you'll be asking for something bigger. You might be asking for a Christmas miracle, a Hanukkah miracle, and perhaps you're asking to be set free to no longer be captive, hostage, and you would be grateful if truly the lights would come back on in your life. Well just now right now maybe they can. Thanks Stan

For the many people who join me in the Christian tradition of going to special services called Palm Sunday yesterday in order to celebrate and perhaps commemorate when Jesus rode into the city of Jerusalem on a donkey and within a week he was going to be arrested, tried, convicted and executed and then something really spectacular happened. And one of the pastors in our church mentioned yesterday that the shouts for Him of Hosanna can certainly mean Hooray and Praise, but they also and originally may mean help us save us rescue us.! And that reminded me of a theme that I have taught for sometime in business and in life and as I went back into the old radio archives I found this program about a very powerful life and communication principle and that is we were made for rescue stories. That's part of the reason we love rescue dogs and there's a whole lot more so take about 20 minutes and you'll learn something new about being rescued. Stan
Coulee Region Wildlife Rehabilitator Kathy KasaKaitas dropped in to tell some stories about rescuing animals. She's working with 1,000-1,200 rescues a year and is pretty much self-funded through donations and grants. She told us two big stories over the past year they've helped with, including a bald eagle that was hit by a train and some baby barn owls nesting in Onalaska — the first nest found in Wisconsin in 21 years. We also discussed the city of La Crosse ending its contract with Coulee Region Humane Society to take animal calls and how that affects them going forward.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, we're presenting stories about times when science comes to the rescue — or not, as the case may be. Part 1: When science writer Kate Sheridan falls in love with a man who suffers from paralyzing headaches, her background in neuroscience helps her get to the bottom of it. Part 2: Math teacher Giselle George-Gilkes is on a trip with her students when she receives terrible news from home. Kate Sheridan is a science writer based in Boston, where she lives with a remarkably fluffy cat. Her writing—much of which has to do with the flu, gene therapies, and other health-related stuff—has appeared in Newsweek, STAT, and the Montreal Gazette. She graduated from McGill University with a bachelor’s degree in cognitive science in 2014. Giselle George-Gilkes is originally from the Nature Island of the Caribbean, Dominica. She’s been the 8th grade Math teacher, at East Side Community High School, since 2005. She graduated from Brooklyn College with a BS in Mathematics and from NYU with an MA in Mathematics Education. She loves mathematics and tries her best to help each student who walks through my door, either fall in love with it or gain a deeper appreciation of it. She is currently in her third fellowship as a Math for America Master Teacher, where she gets to work with an amazing group of educators, from whom she has learned a lot as she's grown as an educator. Appi Preusen, based outside of Chicago, Illinois, is an animal rescue hero and today's guest. Over the past 15 years, on her own initiative and hard work, Appi has helped save at least 700 to 800 dogs and cats. She has formed an informal network of fosters. She doesn't have her own facility, board of directors, famous millionaires, or silent auction fundraisers to help her cause. It's simply she and a dedicated group of people. She's been doing this as long as she could remember, even as a child. Appi gives a wide-ranging overview of fostering 1. Why fostering is important, 2. expectations new fosters should have, 3. matching your activity level with your foster animal's 4. the space requirements for fosters, and 5. the need to foster all types and ages of animals. She also shares some terrific foster / animal rescue stories, including Hector, an older Applehead Chihuahua, and Duke, a Pitbull-Great Dane mix. Aya Eintracht writes for her own blog, called PettingTruck. Her posts focus on her family of cats and dogs. She tends to prefer white long-haired cats and black Newfoundland dogs, which you can witness in the many photos she shares. Aya Eintracht grew up in Chernovitz, part of the former Soviet Union Russia, now better known as Ukraine. Aya and her family currently live in the United States. Today, she gives a reading and additional background information on two animal rescue stories. First, Mino the Cat, whom she rescued in Chernovitz, Ukraine from the apartment of a musician who had committed suicide. Second, Oreo the Dog, whom she rescued in the United States. Oreo had a behavior problem that could have been disastrous for Aya and her human family. PettingTruck's website Newfoundland dogs, named after the Canadian province, are some of the largest dogs one can find, often 120 pounds (54 kilograms) or more in weight. They are a working breed and are often found on fishing boats for their swimming and rescue capabilities. They are also known as gentle protectors. Sometimes referred to affectionately as a Newf or a Newfy. Daniel was a Rebel. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were rebels. Jesus was a rebel. Paul, Peter, and the other disciples were rebels. It may seem strange to say, but a Christian is quite a rebellious person. No, not against God, but she is a rebel against the social norms and the collective behavior of the world around her. She rebels against the expectations that most everyone else mindlessly follows. This is quite a difference from the meek, mild-mannered robots that some might think characterize the ideal Christian. No, such a creature is likely tied to religion. The ideal follower of Christ is a rebel with dissatisfaction for what the world offers, and how the world leads. Permission to be a rebel is granted by God, and doing so allows us to shine among the world to advance the Kingdom of God. When and how to illustrate one's rebellious license is the subject of this message.
