Friends,Today Heather and I take a deep dive into Elon Musk's new status as America's first trillionaire — worth one thousand billion dollars — and its meaning for the future of American capitalism. How much of SpaceX's valuation is based on hype? How much on connections in the Trump regime? How much on Musk's lobbying of major stock index funds? Answer: almost all of it. We also look at Musk and Trump's (and Pete Hegseth's and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s and JD Vance's) obsession with male virility — where that comes from and how it's connected to tomorrow's cage match on the South Lawn of the White House. Friends,Today's weather is so beautiful that Heather and I decided to have our coffee klatch outside on the Berkeley campus. Much to talk about — including the giant initial public stock offerings of the Artificial Intelligence behemoths Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX, in coming weeks, expected to generate over a trillion dollars each. AI may create all sorts of fabulous things, but it's also dangerous as hell, and the window is rapidly closing on what can be done to stop AI from eating our jobs and destroying the human race. We also talk about Trump's 10 days — the House voting to end his war in Iran (or get authorization to continue it), the courts ordering his name off the Kennedy Center and pausing his $1.8 billion Thug Fund, entertainers bailing out of his 250th anniversary megalomaniacal show on the mall, his endorsee losing Iowa's governor's race — and what it means for the future of his pathetic lame-duck presidency. Jean Carroll. We also examine Trump and the Republican Party's obsession with testosterone — part of the so-called “manosphere” — which includes the scheduling of UFC cage matches on the White House's South Lawn, denigrating Democrats such as Senate candidate James Talarico as being “low T,” ridiculing LGBTQ+ people, Trump and Secretary of “War” Pete Hegseth's hyper-aggressiveness, and Trump's fear of strong women who stand up to him.We also discuss the blatant corruption of the Trump regime and its relationship to the horrific U.S. economy. Friends,Sorry for being a bit late this morning. Today Michael and I take a deep dive into Trump's corruption — beginning with CBS's merger deal with Skydance that was conditioned, in part, on its canceling Stephen Colbert's show (which is why I'm wearing a T-shirt I got when I appeared on Colbert's “The Late Show”). We then examine whether Jeff Bezos — the fourth-richest person in the world — is a knave or a fool for going on network television claiming that the richest 1 percent of Americans pay 40 percent of all taxes (a Trump-like lie). And, as long as we're talking about rogues and corruption, we look at Trump's Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche's $1.8 billion Trump slush fund and immunity from all future IRS audits — and its political fallout. All that and more on today's Coffee Klatch. So pull up a chair, grab a cuppa, and join in the discussion. (Heather will be back next Saturday.) This is a public episode. Friends,To say Trump's trip to China was underwhelming is to give it even more credit than it deserves. In fact, Trump's main purpose for making the trip probably wasn't to accomplish anything important but to deflect attention, even for a few days, from his failing war in Iran (the strait is still closed, and Iran is more determined than ever to build a nuclear bomb) and his failing economy (the closure of the strait continues to push up gas prices in the U.S. to near record levels). Today, Heather and I take a hard look at these three items — Trump's China visit, his war in Iran, and the U.S. economy — and put them in the context of the 2026 midterm elections. We also discuss Kevin Warsh's Fed and the unlikelihood it will cut interest rates any time soon. And we examine the rampant, unprecedented corruption of the Trump regime. He says he's eliminated Iran's capacities to threaten U.S. air power, but on Friday Iran shot down an American F-15E bomber.Next we travel to planet Bondi, whom Trump has sacked. We ask why, and whether this is good news or bad — I think it's bad. Then on to Trump's ballroom fiasco, which a federal judge has halted. And we look at Trump's Supreme Court, which is decidedly skeptical about his argument against birthright citizenship for children born in the United States to undocumented people (the plain wording of the 14th Amendment says “all persons born” in the U.S. are citizens). Much else to explore today, including the Artemis II mission, now taking four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the Moon and back to Earth. We then examine the continued lawlessness of ICE and Border Patrol, despite the public's (including many Republicans') growing revulsion against these rogue agencies. Which leads us to Democrat Taylor Rehmet's astounding victory in a special election for a seat in the Texas state Senate — in a district Trump won by 17 percentage points in 2024 but Rehmet won by 14 percentage points this past week, a 30-point swing. Friends,Today, Heather and I take a deep dive into Trump's increasingly addled brain — seeking to understand how quickly he's losing his capacities and the dangers this poses for the rest of us. We begin with his bizarre response to the killings of Rob and Michele Reiner earlier this week, followed by his lie-filled speech to the nation and his chief-of-staff's description of him as having the personality of an “alcoholic” who believes he's omnipotent. We also examine his mounting losses: congressional Republicans who are deserting him, federal courts that continue to reject his orders, and polls showing him tanking. And we attempt to sum up this harrowing year. Please pull up a chair, grab a cuppa, and join in our discussion. Friends,Today, Heather and I — along with our Gen Z associates Katie Milne and Vishal Shankar — explore why the Republican Party is in near revolt against Trump. Congressional Republicans repeatedly rebuked him this week. Twenty House Republicans joined Democrats in passing a discharge petition to restore union rights to federal workers; 14 signed on to another discharge petition to prevent members of Congress from trading stocks. Meanwhile, a Democrat won the race to become mayor of Miami (for the first time in 30 years), and the Indiana Senate rejected a congressional redistricting plan despite Trump's pressure campaign on Republican lawmakers. Why is Trump losing so badly now? Because his polls are plummeting. He refuses to acknowledge how difficult it is for most Americans to make ends meet — calling the affordability crisis a “sham” cooked up by Democrats, while his tariffs continue to jack up prices. Friends,Today, Heather and I are joined by the talented writer and comedian W. Kamau Bell to assess the latest week's dark saga of Trump et al.We start with the horrifying reality that 42 million of America's most vulnerable people — the poor, the very young, the very old, the disabled — will not be receiving nutrition assistance starting today because of …. Why? There are funds to pay them, but Trump and his lapdog Republicans in Congress won't release them, although they're happy to keep on paying federal troops and to release tens of billions to the party of Trump's flamboyant libertarian ally Argentinian President Javier Milei.Today is also the day that millions of Americans reliant on Obamacare discover that starting January 1, their health care premiums will rise an average of 30 percent, because Trump and his Republicans in Congress refuse to extend Obamacare subsidies. Which is why Democrats are refusing to join Republicans in approving that new budget. At least King Charles III had the integrity to strip brother Andrew of his royal titles and estates because of Andrew's apparent entanglements with Jeffrey Epstein. But Trump and his speaker of the House lapdog Michael Johnson are keeping the House in recess and won't swear in Arizona's newest member of Congress, Adelita Grijalva — although she won election 39 days ago — out of fear she'll be the deciding vote to demand release of the Epstein files. And more. Friends,I used to think of presidents as having dignity and stature, and the White House as being the “People's House” — the essence of simple taste and modest grandeur. No longer. In the week after No Kings Day — the largest demonstration in American history — Trump has found new ways to defile and desecrate his office and the nation. He's taken a battering ram to the White House, literally as well as figuratively, to create a giant garish gold-leafed ballroom financed by Trump's favorite billionaires and big corporations. Meanwhile, he posted an AI-generated video of himself as a bomber pilot defecating on the Americans who demonstrated against him. He is using the Justice Department to prosecute people who have tried to hold him accountable for his illegal actions. Deploying federal troops in places he calls “Democrat” cities. Illegally shifting taxpayer money out of what he calls “Democrat” programs during the shutdown. And illegally bombing ships off the coast of Latin America. Trump is degrading his office and himself. Friends,Today Heather and I take a hard look at political violence in America — not just this week's heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk but other violence I've witnessed, and the nation's history of violence in politics — and we ask whether there's something unique to American culture that harbors such deep hatred that people feel compelled to murder others for their political beliefs. Yesterday, Trump doubled down on blaming what he calls the “radical left” for political violence in the United States. During an appearance on “Fox & Friends,” Trump was asked about the presence of radical individuals on both sides of the aisle and how it can be fixed to bring the country together. His response:“The radicals on the right oftentimes are radical because they don't want to see crime. They don't want to see crime. Worried about the border. They're saying, We don't want these people coming in. We don't want you burning our shopping centers. We don't want you shooting our people in the middle of the street. The radicals on the left are the problem, and they're vicious and they're horrible and they're politically savvy, although they want men and women sports, they want transgender for everyone, they want open borders.”Instead of helping the country come together, Trump continues to pull us apart.
