“Vaccinating community cats creates a barrier to disease between wildlife, domestic animals, and people.” This episode is sponsored-in-part by Maddie's Fund. In this special webinar replay edition of the Community Cats Podcast, Brianna Lovell Myers of United Spay Alliance is joined by Dr. Bob Weedon, a leading expert in high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter and public health. Together, they delve into the synergistic relationship between trap-neuter-vaccinate-return (TNVR) and public health initiatives. Dr. Weedon shares compelling data illustrating how TNVR not only reduces shelter intake and euthanasia rates but also fortifies community immunity against rabies. He challenges anti-TNVR narratives using scientific evidence, such as the minimal risk of rabies transmission from cats and the misunderstood lifecycle of toxoplasmosis. A major highlight includes a recent pilot study proving the effectiveness of rabies vaccines in kittens under 12 weeks — a potential game-changer for field operations. This conversation is more than an academic discussion; it's a rallying cry for more integrated, humane, and scientifically-backed approaches to community cat care. Whether you're a vet, policymaker, or colony caretaker, you'll walk away with actionable insights and renewed motivation to champion TNVR. This interview first aired on Wednesday the 29th of May, 2024 on ONE FM 98.5 Shepparton. One FM fill-in breakfast announcer Plemo interviews Sharon Terry from the Shepparton animal shelter about their upcoming cat adoption day. Greater Shepparton City Council is encouraging community members to find a perfect companion for the winter and give one of the many cats and kittens currently at the Shepparton Animal Shelter a forever loving home. Cat Adoption Day: Saturday 1 June, 10am-2pm, 125 Wanganui Road, Shepparton Adoption fees reduced: $30 for cats over 12 months, $100 for kittens. Over 40 cats and kittens seeking homes Adoption fees for cats over 12 months of age have been reduced to only $30, whilst the adoption fee for kittens is $100. No appointments are necessary, just turn up during the specified times for a meet and greet. Adopting not only changes the life of the cat you adopt, it also frees up space in the Shelter so they can take in new animals in need. Animal Shelter staff encourage people planning to attend the day to check out the available cats online on Council's website and choose their favourite feline friend. There is also an online pet adoption questionnaire which can be completed before you get to the Shelter to save time on arrival. All cats have been vet checked, desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, treated for worms and fleas and are ready to take home on the day. Don't forget to bring a carrier to take your new furry friend home, or you can purchase one from the Shelter on the day. Visit the adoption page on Council's website to discover the cats and kittens available. Contact the station on admin@fm985.com.au or (+613) 58313131. Ever wondered what it's like to foster a litter of kittens? Journey with me, your host, Julie Marty Pearson, as I share a deeply personal tale about my own adorable fur family. You'll hear about my experience raising six two-week-old kittens and the challenges that came with their round-the-clock care. But first, I'll account the journey that lead me to fostering this litter and how a tiny kitten named Binx is the reason why I ended up at the shelter on the right day to help these kittens in need.  Fostering kittens is an adventure, indeed! Have you ever tried to transition a kitten from bottle-feeding to solid food? I'll recount that roller-coaster ride, especially the struggles with little George, the runt of the litter, who showed no interest in wet food. But amidst the trials and tribulations, there were countless moments of joy, batches of formula, plates of food, and bags of litter, and finding my forever friend in Pumpkin the calico kitten.   On Pumpkin's first birthday, we'll reflect on this incredible journey together. You'll learn about the importance of volunteering, donating, and fostering, or adopting animals in need. It's more than a tale of love and loss; it's a call to action. After all, what could be more rewarding than opening your heart and home to a pet in need? So, let's celebrate Pumpkin's birthday with a heartfelt message of love from me and my fur family to you and yours. Although some rescues are lucky enough to have "brick and mortar" facilities, many rescues in the US rely on foster homes to house pets and foster parents to care for pets until they're adopted. Without fosters, rescues must stop intake, which means more pets die on the streets and shelters. If you've ever considered becoming a pet foster, this episode will share the ins and outs and ups and downs of fostering.  Your host Amy Castro talks with Nora Burns, a leadership expert who needed a "heartbeat in the house," during the Covid pandemic and since has fostered several pets for local rescues in Colorado. Amy and Nora discuss:- Why fosters are so needed by rescues- How pets benefit from being in foster homes versus in shelters- What fosters gain by bringing a "just for now" pet into their homes - and it's more than just puppy kisses- What to look for in a rescue or shelter if you're considering joining them as a foster- And more! In this episode I had an early rise to chat with the lovely Sayla one of the founders of Cat Adoption Foundation in Australia. This is a special rescue who rescue, rehome and rehabilitate cats and kittens in needs. Their mission is to create a No-Kill Australia with the help and support of pet owners and the public. Rehoming is not always the best solution for people and often they need a helping hand to enable them to keep their beloved animals. This is an issue particularly when it comes to changes in laws or when landlords impose bans on renters having pets. The organisation is run by an all volunteer team who all have different skill-sets and bring their own something special to the table, making them all rounded and able to work diligently together focusing on the areas they are best suited to.Their mission statement is "Fostering A No Kill Nation" which is a play on words as Sayla explains but really the words say it all as we know fostering saves lives!I hope you will enjoy hearing all about the incredible work this organisation does day to day and how they really make a difference.Happy Listening!Fiona XSupport the show

Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Lindsay Frierson, Public Relations Specialist, and Baileigh Back Foster, Foster and Volunteer Coordinator, with Rutherford County Pet Adoption & Welfare Services (PAWS), who highlight their efforts in the community to create a safe, healthy and caring environment for the citizens and animals, through education, adoption and courteous enforcement of the TN codes and County regulations pertaining to animals. During the interview, they talk about their programs and services, including Pet Adoption and their "Free Fur All Friday," their Free Spay and Neuter Program, Rabies and Microchips, their Pet Resource Desk, Trap Neuter Release (TNR), and more. They also discuss their Foster Volunteer Program and how the community can help. What PAWS Does/Our Mission: PAWS works with the community to create a safe, healthy and caring environment for the citizens and animals, through education, adoption and courteous enforcement of TN codes and County regulations pertaining to animals. Rutherford County Pet Adoption & Welfare Services (PAWS) serves as animal and rabies control for Rutherford County, TN, investigating concerns of animal cruelty and abuse and responding to calls of domestic, stray animals running at large. The shelter is also open 7 days a week (outside of most holidays) for pet adoptions and for owners to search and receive guidance for lost pets.Programs and services PAWS offers:  Pet Adoption - Any adult, 18 years of age or older, is welcome to apply to adopt a pet. You do not have to live in Rutherford County to apply. We generally have cats and dogs available for adoption, but have found homes for other animals, i.e., bunnies, lizards, birds, livestock, etc. Some of the most unique adoptions have been, sugar gliders ("flying squirrels") and a tank of fish!"Free Fur All Friday" - Supported by Petco Foundation, adoption fees of available pets are waived each Friday to approved applicants.Free Spay & Neuter Program - Thanks to grants and funding, PAWS offers a FREE Spay & Neuter service to all Rutherford County, TN residents. We are one of very few, known shelters or organizations to offer this service. This program has made a major impact on reducing the number of unwanted litters and pets, as well as overpopulation of pets in the community.Rabies & Microchips - PAWS offers the 1-year rabies vaccine and microchips to the public, $15 each, per cat or dog. We would love to see more pet owners take advantage of microchips, to ensure more pets are reunited with their owners.Pet Resource Desk - The shelter takes in stray, domestic pets found in Rutherford County, every day of the year. Outside of emergencies, animals are accepted to the shelter by appointment, in addition to animal control officers picking up strays from residents who request this service. There are unfortunate times when pet owners are no longer able to care for their pets, and request to surrender them to the shelter. The Pet Resource Desk offers guidance in making the best decision for themselves and their pet, including the delicate decision to request euthanasia service. The Pet Resource Desk sets up appointments for residents who wish to move forward with surrendering their pet to the shelter.Trap Neuter Release (TNR), Barn & Community Cat Programs - The "TNR", Barn & Community Cat Programs allow feral, wild or community cats to continue to live and thrive outdoors, while stabilizing the cat population. Outdoor cats are spayed or neutered, given a rabies vaccine and released to a familiar area. PAWS also receives cats who would be wonderful as barn or "working" cats, and accepts sign ups for those looking to adopt an outdoor, barn cat.How to Help: The community can support the animals of the shelter by donating monetarily, purchasing a Kuranda dog bed, donating items from the PAWS wish list or becoming a Foster Volunteer!Foster Volunteer Program: One of the best ways to support the shelter at this time is becoming a Foster Volunteer for neonate kittens and puppies. Fosters allow young kittens and puppies to receive care outside the shelter, reducing their chances of coming in contact with illnesses or diseases, until they are at a healthy state and age to come back to the shelter to be spayed or neutered and placed up for adoption. No experience is necessary and all items are provided to ensure fosters and their foster kittens or puppies are successful. Apply to be a Foster Volunteer by visiting the shelter during business hours or visiting: Paws.rutherfordcountytn.gov/volunteer.html(quick link: www.bit.ly/RCPAWSVolunteer).Learn more:Facebook:             www.Facebook.com/rutherfordcountypaws  (@rutherfordcountypaws)Website:                www.Paws.rutherfordcountytn.govInstagram:             www.Instagram.com/rutherfordcountypaws  (@rutherfordcountypaws)Email:                    paws@rutherfordcountytn.gov

Sunny has been interested in animals since she was a young girl and has become someone who is very in tune with the issues that animals are going through, a pet whisperer. We talk about the responsibility of adopting a pet, the bittersweet side of being a pet parent, and how becoming a cat lover inspired her to choose a degree in Animal Science.Communicating with CatsWhile she can communicate and get down to the level of any animal, her specialty is communicating with cats. Sunny is the mom of three cat fur babies, which changed her life and led her towards getting her degree in Animal Science. We both agree that cats are so cute, and we're not sure how exactly they do it, but they definitely use their cat talents to put us “under a spell,” reel us in, and make us love them.Sunny's experience with her cat has also included emotional support. “They let me pet them and go to them when I'm sad.” Of course, this depends on the cat and their personality, as not all cats are of the empathetic variety.A Cat Stroller? Yes.She recently bought  a cat stroller and that comes in handy!  Her fur baby likes the independence of being outside within an enclosed area. Sunny can easily take her cat to the appointments with the stroller and go about her day.Pets as Part of The FamilyPets are a big part of her family, and losing a pet is a devastating life event. Sunny has adopted her pets from local shelters, which she likes because of the ability to  connect with them. Listen in as Sunny and I talk about what makes the perfect pet cat for my guest, why we think life is better with pets, and why it's important to adopt a rescue animal. Stay in Touch:Insta: @Life100PodcastWebsite: Life100Podcast.comEmail: Life100Podcast@gmail.com Life 100 here we go!

Angela Marcus interviews Catherine Malkemes, Executive Director and Jack Griffin, Director of Shelter Services from Women’s Animal Shelter in Bensalem, PA. 2019 marks the 150th Anniversary of the Animal Sheltering and Adoptions movement in America. It began in Philadelphia in 1869. And it began with women – thirty of them to be exact, who formally joined forces on April 14, 1869 to establish Women’s Animal Center. Outraged by the cruel manner in which strays on Philadelphia streets were captured and killed, they successfully petitioned City Council to take over the municipal pound as their initial order of business, repurposing it as the first facility in the U.S. for sheltering and rehoming animals. Hear the entire story and learn about how we’re celebrating this exciting milestone - and how you can get involved. With Angela’s previous experience working alongside the Humane Law Enforcement Team of the Pennsylvania SPCA, she’s seen the first-hand need for continuing to fight for more, stronger legislation for animals. Luckily, Pennsylvania has Kristen Tullo at the forefront of that battle. Kristen share’s the miraculous story of “Libre” - a puppy that was rescued by a good Samaritan and saved from the brink of death - who served as inspiration for the new, monumental animal cruelty laws established in 2017 in the Keystone State. She also breaks down the other critical elements the general public needs to know about this historic new law, including: added protections for horses, increased penalties for animal abusers, civil immunities and new forfeiture requirements. Angela Marcus interviews Danae Davis, executive director of FACE Foundation, whose mission is to enhance and preserve the quality of life of animals by providing access to necessary, lifesaving medical care. Angela defines “economic euthanasia” and Danae explains how FACE’s program works to put an end to it in their community. The lifesaving funding that FACE provides is only one part of the process – their success is also dependent on the veterinary and community partners they have. Danae also shares two heartwarming, incredible success stories that will bring a smile to your “face.” We also learn about Bailey, a 12-year-old mixed-breed dog looking for a loving home in which she can spend her golden years. At about 50 pounds, Bailey is playful and completely housetrained. She LOVEs people and would do best as the only pet in the home. Bailey is spending her days at the Lifetime Animal Care Center, partners of FACE, in sunny San Diego, CA. The team there loves her so much and will ensure that she’s ready to go with up-to-date bloodwork, a dental cleaning, and a bath! She’ll also go to her new home with food, toys, shampoo and other goodies! If you are interested in bringing Bailey home, email Angela at angela@petliferadio.com. FACE’s annual holiday fundraising drive is throughout the month of December. Any donation received during December will be doubled by FACE’s Board President up to $100,000! These donations will go towards life-saving veterinary treatment for more pets in the future. PLUS: Meet Floyd, once neglected and forgotten, now living life to the fullest! Angela Marcus interviews Sondra Rolison, owner of Blitz Pet Professionals and highly sought-after dog training professional. Sondra tells us about her background - how she turned a passion into a career - and makes some genius analogies for how training dogs can be like having a three-year-old in your home. Listen to learn the importance of crate training and hear some great tips on the best way to use positive reinforcement to train your pup to potty outside. Sondra also shares her suggestions for what to consider when adopting your next dog. We also hear the story of Floyd, Sondra’s current foster dog. After spending his formative days locked in a “cat-sized” crate in a dark, windowless basement, he was rescued. His former owner stands charged with over 40 counts of animal cruelty/neglect. Thankfully, through a network of dedicated animal advocates, Floyd was brought to Sondra for rehabilitation. She has been working to nurse him back to health and with frequent physical therapy, massage and lots of time outdoors in the sunshine, he is well on the road to recovery and is now ready to for his forever home. Even though he is dog-friendly, Sondra wants him to find a home where he can be the only dog and “center of attention” to ensure he gets all the love he deserves!
