In the late 1960s and early 1970s, former candy business operator Dean “Candy Man” Arnold Corll builds a reputation in Houston Heights as a trusted individual. The parents of the lower-middle-class neighborhood appreciate how Dean is a role model and caretaker for the local boys and young men. Except this is a ruse. Dean is actually the serial rapist and murderer responsible for multiple missing boys' disappearances. When Dean's accomplice, 17-year-old Elmer Wayne Henley Junior, kills Dean in August of 1973, all is revealed. Wayne shows the authorities Dean's three dumping sites: a storage unit, a beach, and a forest. Within days, police uncover 27 victims' nude and plastic-wrapped bodies. Dean's other accomplice, 18-year-old David Owen Brooks, and Wayne receive justice for their part in these murders, but Dean—the mastermind—will never answer for his crimes. In episode 334, Jac and Alexis break down how Dean's evil actions terrorized a community without anyone noticing. This is part two of a two-part series.

On the morning of August 8, 1973, 17-year-old Elmer Wayne Henley Junior shoots and kills former candy company owner, 33-year-old Dean Arnold Corll, in Pasadena, Texas. Wayne was acting in self-defense, saving himself and two friends. After a night of partying, Dean had bound the three young adults with the intent of raping and murdering them. Wayne convinced Dean to free him with false promises, which allowed him to grab Dean's gun. When the authorities arrive, Wayne explains to the Texas police that Dean has killed many boys and young men. Wayne directs the officers to the location of four bodies, but the investigators don't find four bodies. They find 17. Within hours, Wayne confesses his own involvement and provides the locations of 10 additional bodies. In episode 333, Jac and Alexis unpack how Dean, known locally as the Candy Man, manipulated Wayne and another young man, 18-year-old David Owen Brooks, into participating in one of the nation's most horrific crimes. Dean Corll born 1939 was an American serial killer who abducted raped and tortured several young men. His victims total 46 known. He terrorized the community of The Heights, Houston in a crime that would end the culture of suburban openness that characterized the 1950s and much of the 1960s. No longer would the kindly clean cut neighbour who had an affinity for children be seen without perhaps some watchful suspicious eye. Corll was helped and supported by two men, the diffident David Owen Brooks and sly young rogue Wayne Henley, who both assisted him in finding victims. We explore this tragic story in lurid details while also putting these true events in the context of America's developing understanding of homosexuality in the late 1960s with Corll being a negative symbol for the gay community.

Hey, y'all, and welcome to Southern Macabre! Thank y'all so much for tuning in today for True Crime Friday. Today I'm going to tell y'all about a solved case from Texas. I'm going to try to spare y'all the graphic details, but y'all may not want your young'uns listening in. * While I was recording, I got a notification on my tablet that I have set to say, "I'm your Huckleberry" an infamous line from the movie Tombstone. Due to when it occurred, I left it as it seemed fitting to me. There is a note in the transcript when it happens on the recording. * ----- Dean Arnold Corll was born December 24, 1939 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, but moved to Memphis, Tennessee after his parents, Arnold and Mary Corll, divorced. His father was stationed there with the U.S. Air Force and his mother wanted him to still have contact with both of his sons, Corll, and his younger brother, Stanley Wayne Corll.   His parents reconciled, remarried, and moved to Pasadena, Texas. It didn't last long and they divorced on good terms and Arnold maintained contact with his boys.   After this divorce, Mary married a traveling clock salesman named Jake West. They moved to Vidor, Texas where his half-sister, Joyce, was born. Mary and Jake started a family-owned candy company in their garage and Jake would sell it to his clients. Corll worked in the candy kitchen all of the time, even though he was still in school. He and his brother were responsible for the candy-making machines and packaging.   The family moved just outside Houston in 1958, when Corll graduated, to help the popular candy company, Pecan Prince, grow. In 1960, Mary asked Corll to move in with his elderly grandmother, which he did.   During this time, he became friends with a local girl. She proposed marriage to him in 1962, but he turned her down. He returned to Houston in 1962 to help with the candy shop that had moved to Houston Heights by then. He moved into an apartment above the store.   Mary divorced Jack in 1963 and opened Corll Candy Shop. Corll was appointed vice-president and Stanley was secretary-treasurer. That year, one of the teenaged male employees told Mary that Corll had made sexual advances towards him, so she fired the employee.   On August 10, 1964, Corll went to Fort Polk, Louisiana after being drafted by the U.S. Army. He was then assigned to Fort Benning, Georgia where he was trained to fix radios. His permanent assignment was Fort Hood, Texas. He was honorably discharged after ten months of service so he could go back to Houston to help with Corll Candy Company.   Corll reportedly told close friends that it was during his time in the Army that he realized he was a homosexual and had had his first homosexual experiences during that time. Others noticed how he acted around teenaged boys after he came home and wondered if he was a homosexual.   He returned to a fierce competition between Pecan Prince, his former stepfather's company, and Corll Candy Company, his mother's business. He increased the number of hours he worked in order to meet the demand for his family's candy.   In 1965, Corll Candy Company relocated across the street from an elementary school. Corll earned the nickname “ The Candy Man '' and “Pied Piper '' because he would give free candy to children, especially teenage boys.   The “Pied Piper” title was a bit prophetic as the legend says that the Pied Piper lured children to their deaths and their families never saw them again.   Only a few people worked in the candy store and he was seen to behave inappropriately with several teenage male employees. Anthony Morley, 35, chewed one of the pieces before throwing it into his kitchen trash. Morley is a former holder of the Mr. Gay UK title. - Gay Aaron McKinney was being pimped alongside Matthew Shephard, with whom he occasionally had unnatural physical relations, before he and Russell Henderson murdered Shepherd over drugs, a crime that was not the homophobic attack that McKinney played it as and was then recklessly promoted worldwide by the media.- The Doodler: Five San Francisco homosexuals were murdered and others assaulted in 1974 by a man known as "The Doodler" who will, with high likelihood, turn out to be himself a homosexual.- Gay Cop Killer Matthew Riehl: Colorado's pot-smoking homosexual Matthew Riehl tried to kill five but shot four and killed one officer. * Bible Verses Against Homosexuality: Newsweek's Lisa Miller was caught red-handed intentionally misrepresenting the Bible and claiming that it does not speak out against lesbianism. Dean Arnold Corll (December 24, 1939 – August 8, 1973) was an American serial killer who abducted, raped, tortured, and murdered at least 28 teenage boys and young men between 1970 and 1973 in Houston, Texas. He was aided by two teenaged accomplices, David Owen Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley. The crimes, which became known as the Houston Mass Murders, came to light after Henley fatally shot Corll. On this episode  of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we talk some true crime and look at the life, murders, and death of Dean Corll. Called the Candyman or the Pied Piper, Corll had a reputation in Houston for giving candy to teenage boys from his family candy shop. He was loved by his community, and he didn’t seem to have anything in his background that was typical to trigger a serial killer. A divorce and some suppressed homosexuality were in his background, but none of the madness that usually forces one to kill. However, he became one of the most prolific killers, racking up at least 28 deaths in his time. Oh, and he had two teenage accomplices. Corll was raised by middle class parents and moved around a bit since his father was in the military. His folks divorced, remarried, divorced again. His mom eventually took the advice of a traveling pecan salesman (like you do) and started a candy company in her garage. A teenaged Corll worked there after school, and it eventually became big enough to move to a proper factory. Corll was drafted during Vietnam but served stateside as a radio repairman. He was discharged early on the grounds of family hardship since he needed to run the factory. Once home again, he put a pool table in the back of the factory and would often take batches of boys to the beach as a sort of “Scout Leader” persona. Eventually, the candy competition was too fierce, and the candy shop closed. Somehow in the year or so after this, he went from a model citizen to a maniacal sex crazed serial killer. He recruited two youths to help Dean Corll scout and bring him teenage boys for $200 a pop. They were David Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley. They saw him as a father figure and thought that the sex that was happening with Corll and their recruits was consensual. At least at first. Eventually, the rape and murder started. And eventually, Henley and Brooks helped hide the bodies and got involved at every part of the killings. This one leaves a lot of unanswered questions. First off, what set Dean Corll off? He went from mild mannered to monster in merely months. Second, how did they get so many teenage boys to come over to the house? Why didn’t the police start to investigate this crazy wave of teenage murders? Was Corll part of a nation wide teenage sex trafficking ring? Why did Henley eventually shoot Corll? What pushed him too far and made him say “enough”? Where did they hide the bodies? What kind of sentences did Henley and Brooks get? Gennady Mikhasevich Russian, Gennady Mikhasevich, isn’t your typical serial killer because for much of his life, he was relatively normal. Gennady was born in Vitebsk, Polotsk, close to Byelorussia SSR in 1947. On May 14, 1971, Gennady came back from military service to find out his girlfriend had left him, and worse, married somebody else. After the breakup, he contemplated suicide, even taking a piece of noose with him. While on the road to his parents’ house, Gennady came across a young woman. To vent his anger, he killed the young girl by strangling her. Afterwards, he killed another girl by October and two other women in 1972. In 1973, Gennady graduated from technical school and started work. Three years later, he married and had two children. Meanwhile, the murders went on. Gennady found a job in a machine repair service and his outward appearance was that of a family man and serious worker. 3. Dean Corll Known as The Candy Man or the Pied Piper, Corll earned his nickname since he would often give children free candy. His family ran a candy store in Houston, Texas but when the business closed, Corll trained to become an electrician. Soon, he ended up making friends with young male teens instead of guys his age. One of the first he befriended was then 12-year old, David Owen Brooks. Brooks became a constant companion to Corll seeing him as a father figure. By 1969, a sexual relationship developed between the two at the urging of Corll. He would give Brooks gifts and money in exchange. By 1970, Dean Corll killed his first known victim. 2. William Bonin In a span of a year, from August 1979 to June 1980, William Bonin haunted the freeways of Los Angeles and Orange County, California. Worse, while Bonin was vicious on his own, he also had three other accomplices who actively participated in his killings. Born Willian George Bonin on January 8, 1947, the twice paroled sex offender grew up in a dysfunctional family. Both his parents were alcoholics who left him and his two brothers in the care of their grandfather – a convicted child molester. By 1961, the family moved to California. It was in this new home in Angell Street, Downey that Bonin would molest his younger brother as well as various neighborhood kids – luring them with alcohol. After finishing high school, he got engaged and joined the Air Force. 1. Paul John Knowles Given up to foster homes and reformatories at a young age by his father, Paul John Knowles grew up in a dysfunctional environment. By the time he was 19 in early 1974, he was incarcerated for petty crime and it was here he began correspondence with a San Francisco divorcee named, Angela Covic. During a prison visit, Knowles proposed to Angela and she agreed. She then hired him a legal counsel and became instrumental in getting Knowles out of prison. Afterwards, Knowles flew to California to live with her. However, a psychic told Angela “a dangerous man” was going to enter her life so she ended the relationship with him and cancelled the wedding. According to Knowles, that same night she broke off their
