Two pairs of everything — body parts — turn up in three southern counties before anyone thinks to ask the quiet woman on the hog farm what was buried out behind the barn.EPISODE PAGE (includes list of sources): https://weirddarkness.com/noir-twopairsofeverythingTHE REAL CASE BEHIND THIS STORY: THE VIOLA HYATT CASE (1959, ALABAMA)Viola Hyatt was a 30-year-old farm woman living with her father Martin on a hog farm near White Plains, Alabama. Raised by a cruel, sickly mother who told her daily she was a curse, Viola grew up isolated, heavy-set, and physically strong from butchering the family's hogs herself — a job she took over from her father as a teenager. When her father rented a small trailer on the property to two construction workers — brothers Emmett and Lee Harper, both WWII veterans (one a Bataan Death March survivor) — the arrangement turned ugly. The brothers sexually abused Viola, beat her father when he objected, and treated the family with contempt. Viola endured it for months. On the morning of June 27, she loaded her father's 12-gauge shotgun, walked to the trailer, and shot both men in the face. She then used the double-bit axe from the barn to dismember the bodies, loaded the parts into the brothers' own 1957 Ford, and drove all night through three Alabama counties — Calhoun, Etowah, and Cleburne — scattering arms, legs, and torsos along roadsides, in briar patches, and in the Tallapoosa River. The bodies were so disfigured that police couldn't identify them for 17 days. They called the victims "Mr. X" and "Mr. Y." The case broke when the construction foreman recognized police sketches and connected them to a phone call Viola had made claiming the brothers were tending to a sick mother. Police found blood in the trunk of the car, the buried axe, and damage to the trailer door — and after a six-hour interrogation, Viola confessed. She was evaluated at Brice Mental Hospital, found sane, and pled guilty in March of the following year to avoid the electric chair. She received a life sentence. She never explained her motive beyond saying the abuse "wasn't the main reason" — it was "worse than that." She refused interviews for the rest of her life. Paroled in 1970, she lived quietly in a trailer park until her death in 1992, taking whatever the full story was to the grave.WeirdDarkness® is a registered trademark. Recently on the show, we've discussed the paroling of Chad Campbell, a Wayne County man who killed a 15-year-old classmate of his and a 17-month-old child said classmate was babysitting in 1990. He was paroled to Erie County. Now, on the heels of that, a Lewiston man, 78-year-old Iver Phallen has been released from state prison on parole after he pleaded guilty to charges related to sexually abusing and torturing women inside his condo. Why are these people getting paroled? We discuss this with former Erie County District Attorney John Flynn.
Today, we revisit the case of Chad Campbell, a convicted double murderer who was recently paroled. Campbell killed a 15 year old girl and 17 month old baby in Wayne County in 1990, and not only was he recently paroled, he was paroled to Erie County, no less. Do you think he should have been paroled period? We also hear from Erie County Legislator Frank Todaro on this issue.

California quietly reclassified people in their early 50s as “elderly” and opened the door for rapists with 50-, 100-, even 800-year sentences to walk free after serving a fraction of their time. Through Jennifer's story, this episode uncovers how that happened with almost no public scrutiny, why most victims never hear about these parole hearings until it's too late, and what prosecutors and judges say must change before other states start copying the same playbook.Thank you to our sponsor: Preserve Gold - text "ASK PHIL" to 50505 and go to https://DrPhilGold.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Richard Allen Davis is an ex-con out on parole after serving 8 years of a 16-year sentence for kidnapping. Paroled to a halfway house for convicts with alcohol and drug addiction, he gets an overnight pass and drives his ford pinto 60 miles up the California coast to Petaluma. Davis goes to a park, smokes a joint and drinks beer, 2 blocks from the home of 12-year-old Polly Klaas, having a slumber party with two friends. Davis sneaks into the home, grabs a knife from the kitchen, and goes to the room where the girls are setting up sleeping bags. It takes the girls 20 minutes to free themselves and they run to Polly's mother, Eve Nichols. who calls the police. Today's Podcast "Axe the tax" Playback of our exclusive interview with Pierre Poilievre on his "axe the (carbon) tax" national election commitment - and separately Poilievre's reply to BC premier David Eby's claim that Poilievre's "axe the tax" messaging is from the CPC leader's "baloney factory." Keeping in mind the majority of Canada's premiers support Poilievre, including the only Liberal premier Dr. Andrew Furey of Newfoundland and Labrador. Guests: Pierre Poilievre (playback) Callers Just days after George Lovie, convicted first degree murderer of the parents of Don Edwards went AWOL while on day parole with an arrest warrant issued for Lovie, he was granted full parole by just two members of the National Parole Board. The parole board also declared the double murderer doesn't need to understand why he is a risk to others. Lovie has been on day parole since 2019, but has for a year-plus been allowed to spend five nights a week in his own apartment near Sudbury, Ontario. The Edwards family remains very much afraid of Lovie and during his being AWOL was warned by police to put their safeguarding practices into play. Guests: Don and Tannis Edwards. Public frustration with and opposition to the carbon tax continues to grow. We heard from CPC leader Pierre Poilievre on his 'axe the tax' national pre-election commitment yesterday and today, as well as BC premier David Eby characterizing Poilievre's challenge of the carbon tax as being from PP's "baloney factory." Listeners/callers have challenged the BC premier and an email sent by a Green Show listener to Trudeau, Freeland, Guilbeault and Singh, with Poilievre and me cc'd is brief, and describes the pain the carbon tax and misdirection by politicians who do not share the difficulties the average Canadian addresses daily continues to receive positive listener response. - As well, an IPSOS poll for RBC of last October details the distress Canadians, particularly younger adults, are experiences over money woes. A majority of these Canadians told IPSOS their personal relationships are impacted by financial stress and mental health has suffered as well. The Mental Health Commission of Canada previously affirmed unemployment and financial problems to be key risks for suicide and that when the economy turns down, depression and anxiety rise. Then, we take your calls. Does listener George's email represent your experience trying to stay financially afloat and do you support George's call for tax relief? Guests: Sean Simpson. VP. Cop Killer Paroled, The Hearing for Them and Others. Insight into crucial parole proceedings as an Alternate Parole Board member for the New Jersey State Parole Board, Dr. Paitakes brings to bear his extensive 50-year background, which includes stints as a probation officer, esteemed professor at Seton Hall University, and author. Recalling a grim chapter in New Jersey's annals, Dr. Paitakes revisits a fateful summer night in 1963 when two police officers were gunned down in a local bar, leaving one assailant incarcerated for a lifetime, an incarceration that spanned decades until an unexpected parole release. The grisly incident serves as a stark reminder of the perils faced by law enforcement. Cop Killer Paroled, The Hearing for Them and Others. Central to Dr. John Paitakes' narrative are the parole hearings he has participated in, notably one concerning a convicted cop killer. Despite the inmate's apparent lack of remorse and antagonistic demeanor toward the parole board, parole was ultimately granted upon appeal, underscoring the delicate balance between rehabilitation and public safety. Cop Killer Paroled, The Hearing for Them and Others. Dr. Paitakes also explores the peculiar case of an inmate vehemently opposed to parole, shedding light on the deep-seated effects of institutionalization on those ensnared within the system. These reflections illuminate the manifold challenges inherent in parole decision-making. Noteworthy is the New Jersey State Parole Board's emphasis on involving crime victims in the parole process, offering avenues for their voices to be heard. Encouraging active engagement from victims and their families ensures thorough consideration of their concerns, with provisions for confidential testimony and dedicated victim services exemplifying the board's commitment to safeguarding their privacy and well-being. Dr. Paitakes' extensive expertise and unwavering commitment to justice advocacy continue to shape discussions on criminal justice reform. As an educator, consultant, and advocate, he remains a steadfast champion in the ongoing quest for a fair and equitable justice system. He documents much of that in the book he wrote, "50 Years Working in Criminal Justice". Cop Killer Paroled, The Hearing for Them and Others. Leslie Van Houten was 19 at the time of the crime that she committed under the coercive control of arguably the most infamous cult leader of all time, Charles Manson. She has spent 54 years in prison for stabbing a dead or dying woman. We are not negating the brutality of the crimes committed by the Manson Family, and do not wish to diminish the atrocities that were inflicted on the victims. One important fact that is often misreported is that Leslie was not present at the infamous Tate murders on Cielo Drive. Many myths surround the "Manson Girls", and after reading Karlene Faith's book Leslie Van Houten's Long Prison Journey, Ash felt the need to tell Leslie's story as it happened, and not how it's been sensationalized by the media.Again, we implore you to listen to these episodes with an open heart and mind.
