In the late 1960s and early 1970s, former candy business operator Dean “Candy Man” Arnold Corll builds a reputation in Houston Heights as a trusted individual. The parents of the lower-middle-class neighborhood appreciate how Dean is a role model and caretaker for the local boys and young men. Except this is a ruse. Dean is actually the serial rapist and murderer responsible for multiple missing boys' disappearances. When Dean's accomplice, 17-year-old Elmer Wayne Henley Junior, kills Dean in August of 1973, all is revealed. Wayne shows the authorities Dean's three dumping sites: a storage unit, a beach, and a forest. Within days, police uncover 27 victims' nude and plastic-wrapped bodies. Dean's other accomplice, 18-year-old David Owen Brooks, and Wayne receive justice for their part in these murders, but Dean—the mastermind—will never answer for his crimes. Police dismissed them as runaways, unaware that the man responsible for their disappearances was one of America's most prolific and horrific serial killers: Dean Corll. Emmanuel Nunez is a biomedical engineer who is advocating for improved pedestrian and bicycle infrastructre in Houston. He is currently focused on the preservation of recent pedestrian and bicycling infrastructure improvements on a portion of 11th Street that goes through the Houston Heights neighborhood. These improvements are under threat as Mayor John Whitmire who was elected in 2023 has expressed disdain for similar projects across the city.

Daniel Denton Cooley was very instrumental in the development of Houston Heights, establishing a school, and eventually elected as Alderman when the Heights incorporated in the late 1800s. He also served as Chairman on the joint city and county committee that built Jefferson-Davis Hospital. He became known as the Father of Houston Heights.

Hey, y'all, and welcome to Southern Macabre! Thank y'all so much for tuning in today for True Crime Friday. Today I'm going to tell y'all about a solved case from Texas. I'm going to try to spare y'all the graphic details, but y'all may not want your young'uns listening in. * While I was recording, I got a notification on my tablet that I have set to say, "I'm your Huckleberry" an infamous line from the movie Tombstone. Due to when it occurred, I left it as it seemed fitting to me. There is a note in the transcript when it happens on the recording. * ----- Dean Arnold Corll was born December 24, 1939 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, but moved to Memphis, Tennessee after his parents, Arnold and Mary Corll, divorced. His father was stationed there with the U.S. Air Force and his mother wanted him to still have contact with both of his sons, Corll, and his younger brother, Stanley Wayne Corll.   His parents reconciled, remarried, and moved to Pasadena, Texas. It didn't last long and they divorced on good terms and Arnold maintained contact with his boys.   After this divorce, Mary married a traveling clock salesman named Jake West. They moved to Vidor, Texas where his half-sister, Joyce, was born. Mary and Jake started a family-owned candy company in their garage and Jake would sell it to his clients. Corll worked in the candy kitchen all of the time, even though he was still in school. He and his brother were responsible for the candy-making machines and packaging.   The family moved just outside Houston in 1958, when Corll graduated, to help the popular candy company, Pecan Prince, grow. In 1960, Mary asked Corll to move in with his elderly grandmother, which he did.   During this time, he became friends with a local girl. She proposed marriage to him in 1962, but he turned her down. He returned to Houston in 1962 to help with the candy shop that had moved to Houston Heights by then. He moved into an apartment above the store.   Mary divorced Jack in 1963 and opened Corll Candy Shop. Corll was appointed vice-president and Stanley was secretary-treasurer. That year, one of the teenaged male employees told Mary that Corll had made sexual advances towards him, so she fired the employee.   On August 10, 1964, Corll went to Fort Polk, Louisiana after being drafted by the U.S. Army. He was then assigned to Fort Benning, Georgia where he was trained to fix radios. His permanent assignment was Fort Hood, Texas. He was honorably discharged after ten months of service so he could go back to Houston to help with Corll Candy Company.   Corll reportedly told close friends that it was during his time in the Army that he realized he was a homosexual and had had his first homosexual experiences during that time. Others noticed how he acted around teenaged boys after he came home and wondered if he was a homosexual.   He returned to a fierce competition between Pecan Prince, his former stepfather's company, and Corll Candy Company, his mother's business. He increased the number of hours he worked in order to meet the demand for his family's candy.   In 1965, Corll Candy Company relocated across the street from an elementary school. Corll earned the nickname “ The Candy Man '' and “Pied Piper '' because he would give free candy to children, especially teenage boys.   The “Pied Piper” title was a bit prophetic as the legend says that the Pied Piper lured children to their deaths and their families never saw them again.   Only a few people worked in the candy store and he was seen to behave inappropriately with several teenage male employees. He designed and built a broad variety of residential and historic projects in Texas from 1995 to 2014, including high-end new homes, ranches and estates, major remodeling, historic restoration and adaptive re-use of historic structures, historic and light commercial projects. From 1995 until 2013, Travis was the founder, lead designer and Managing Partner of Sentient Architecture, LLC, (Formerly Round Top Architecture). He partnered with commercial architect, Robert Brett Pitt, in that enterprise serving the rural areas of South Central Texas and the Austin, Texas environs. In 2013, the partners formed individual enterprises and Travis moved his design practice into Truehome Design.Build.Travis is an expert on the adaptive re-use of period materials and artifacts, as well as human factors based architectural programming for residential projects. He is the author of the Truehome Workshop and the originator of that systematic process which he has used with clients for over eighteen years.One of his projects was awarded a T. C. Jester award for excellence in historic design in the historic Houston Heights. Mr. Travis' company was named Remodeler of the Year by the Greater Houston Builder's Association. He is also an expert on designing and building projects on remote sites and in rural areas.His projects have appeared in the New York Times, Builder magazine, Country Living, Cowboys and Indians, Home Companion, Sun Coast Magazine, Go Magazine (Airtran Airways flight magazine), Hommes Magazine in Greece; the San Antonio Express News, the Marin County Independent Journal, The Providence Sunday Journal, in Texas Highways and before employee groups at Microsoft and Google. Major stories on his approach have appeared twice in German publications and in the Netherlands and Australia.Mr. Travis is also a writer and theorist who has a multi-disciplinary interest in how psychological techniques, and human factors findings, can be applied to architecture and residential design to more effectively create homes and living environments that “fit the psychological nature of people” .He studies and applies the possibility of therapeutic architecture in his design practice. Dean Corll was known for passing out sweets to kids in the Houston Heights, where his family had a candy factory. But that smile was a mask, and behind it was one of the most brutal, calculating serial killers of the 20th century. WTF Moments:Long before Dean Corll ever killed any children, he earned his nickname as “The Candy Man” after his mother opened a candy shop in the Houston Heights, and he gave local teenagers free candy around the neighborhood.Disgusting Dean was a total moma’s boy. In fact, his mother actually fired employees at the candy shop for complaining about Dean’s harassment – denial at its finest.His first accomplice (David Brooks) was only 12 years old when they first met. Dean was 27 at the time – sicko.Dean Corll kidnapped, raped and tortured more than 28 young boys in a 3 year time span.Despite the families persistence, Police did not look into these cases, and every single missing child was originally reported as a runaway- even when 11 boys from the same school went missing within months of one another.Dean totally snapped when Brooks brought a female to his house, and then planned on killing the 3 teenagers that night.As fate would have it, his main accomplice, David Brooks, finally snapped and shot Corll six times before he finally collapsed.His first shot literally ricocheted off Corll’s skull in true Frankenstein fashion. The Store: Darling Way In this episode, Beth talks about how she started and founded the Darling Way after her 22-year marriage ended with a divorce. She shares how her shop started after an awful experience buying a lingerie for herself. Her store's concept is about embracing the fact that it's okay to be silly, fun, and excited or just a light-hearted approach to the serious topic of sexy fun. What's in the Shop? The Darling Way, as Beth describes it, carries everything fun, flirty, frisky, and fetish. From high-end lingeries, to more affordable lingerie, lotions, potions, lubricants, massage oils, candles, scents, pheromone sprays, stimulating creams, gels, vibrations, whips, chains, anything that people can use to have sexy fun. Making the Customers Comfortable Talking About Sex “We are just open.” — Beth's remark when asked how they make customers feel comfortable talking about sex.
