From July of 1974 until his capture four months later, an attractive man by all accounts, went on a killing spree. Officially, twenty victims have him to blame for their demise. Unofficially, the count could be much higher. He traveled over twenty thousand miles in four months, stopping, murdering and driving through twenty-five states—all with a charming smile on his face. Why do some serial killers choose to end their lives, and what drives the timing of this final act? This thought-provoking question underpins a fascinating discussion on the "Hidden Killers" podcast, where host Tony Brueski is joined by Dr. Katherine Ramsland, a respected professor of forensic psychology. The conversation delves deep into the mindsets of notorious serial killers, examining their motivations for suicide and the factors influencing their timing. The dialogue begins with the case of Ted Kaczynski, the infamous Unabomber, whose decision to take his life appeared to stem more from health concerns than remorse or despair. Dr. Ramsland explores various reasons why some serial killers wait years in prison before committing suicide, while others act swiftly upon capture or sentencing. She shares the story of Harold Shipman, who delayed his suicide to ensure his wife could collect his pension, demonstrating a calculated and pragmatic approach to his death. Another intriguing aspect discussed is the different methodologies serial killers employ to end their lives. Dr. Ramsland provides a detailed account of Israel Keyes' suicide, highlighting his meticulous planning. Keyes, known for his cunning and evasion of law enforcement, ingeniously coiled his bedsheet in a manner that would ensure death by strangulation as he lost consciousness from blood loss. The conversation shifts to explore the concept of 'suicide by cop' or orchestrating one's own murder in prison. While Dr. Ramsland notes that this is less common among serial killers, she recounts the case of Paul John Knowles, who seemingly attempted suicide by cop during a police transport. In contrast, she points out that killers like Jeffrey Dahmer did not exhibit any desire to be killed by others, debunking some common misconceptions about serial killers' end-of-life choices. A significant part of the discussion focuses on the psychological implications of these actions. The varying motivations for suicide among serial killers – from health issues and despair to strategic planning for the benefit of loved ones – reflect the complexity of their psychological profiles. Dr. Ramsland's insights shed light on how these individuals view their imprisonment and the inevitability of their fate, offering a glimpse into their often distorted sense of control and finality. As the conversation concludes, Brueski thanks Dr. Ramsland for her enlightening input, emphasizing the value of her research and writings in understanding the intricate behaviors of serial killers. Her expertise provides not just academic insights but also practical knowledge that can aid in law enforcement and psychological profiling. What does the decision to commit suicide reveal about the inner workings of a serial killer's mind, and how can this knowledge help us in understanding and potentially preventing future crimes? This episode of "Hidden Killers" with Dr. Katherine Ramsland leaves listeners pondering the depths of human psychology, especially those of the most enigmatic and dangerous individuals in society. In a world that often struggles to comprehend the motives behind such heinous crimes, Dr. Ramsland's contributions offer a valuable perspective, deepening our understanding of the complex and often disturbing realities of the criminal mind. For four months in 1974, 28 year old Paul John Knowles went on a reckless murder spree across the United States that claimed the lives of at least 18 people. He killed men, women, seniors, and small children. He strangled some, shot others, and stabbed still others. Some crimes were sexual, and some weren't. The man who had spent more than half his life incarcerated in some form for a variety of petty, generally theft-related crimes suddenly became very, VERY violent. Why? That's what we explore in today's real-life monster, fit-for-October, true crime edition of Timesuck. Ja, det gäller en serimördare som döpts till Casanova Killer helt utan att leva upp till något annat än att ha snygga kindben. Och vara seriemördare. Paul John Knowles; The Casanova Killer. He was active during 1974, a.k.a. “The Year of Fear”, however, not many people are too familiar with him. Ironic, since his main goal in life was to be “iconic” like Bonnie & Clyde, Dillinger, etc. In this episode, Courtney & Patrick introduce you to the most vile human (if you can call him that) on the planet. It's because of revisionist history that Paul John Knowles might be better known to some listeners at the Casanova Killer, but don't be fooled: This serial killer deserves no romanticization. Knowles went on a murder spree in 1974 that's been tied to the deaths of at least 20 people -- and he apparently did it just to get famous. Plenty of trigger warnings apply as Sean takes us back to the grim world of serial killers with the human string of misadventures known as Paul John Knowles. After killing (probably) 20 people on a cross-country crime spree, Knowles was dubbed the "Casanova Killer" by the press, who mistook him for a dashing ladies' man and mastermind murderer. In reality - as we'll see - he was as much a failure as a criminal as he was in the bedroom. This week, Tom and Ben look into one of America’s most forgotten serial killers: the dangerously charming Paul John Knowles, more commonly known as The Casanova Killer...It's the night of July 26th, 1974 – George McCrae’s “Rock Your Baby” tops the charts across the USA. Upbeat melodies fill the air and people embrace amidst the magic of Seventies America. Counterculture in full-swing and the “free-love” movement midway through its second decade, promiscuous adolescents pack the bars to the rafters. Music continues to flow as strangers engage, dancing and drinking the night away. With “newly-mets” leaving together, a lonely figure remains at the bar. Taking no notice in anything but the alcohol he consumes, he continues to lift his glass. Drink after drink, after drink. The bar now empty, it’s his time to leave. But he remains glued to the bar. Undeterred by the waitress’s requests, a bouncer approaches. A knife is plunged into the bouncer’s chest and the attacker tries to flee. Pinned down by the bouncer and assisting bar staff, the police are called in. They make the arrest of the drunken stranger and take him to his cell. In the early hours HOWEVER, and in a drunken daze, the stranger picks the lock to his cell and escapes into the Jacksonville night. Little did they know, this mysterious drunken escapee would that night go on to become The Casanova Killer…So, who is The Casanova Killer and why did he go on to take the lives of so many innocent people? How did he put each victim under his spell? What were his motivations behind his killing spree? How was he able to escape time after time? What did he do with his taped confessions? And how did he remain at large for so long?Tune in and all will be revealed!***Please kindly give the show a rating and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you find us in your ears at the moment. It helps us so, so much and will make it easier for other potential listeners to find us. Thanks for your support. Until next time!***

Gennady Mikhasevich Russian, Gennady Mikhasevich, isn’t your typical serial killer because for much of his life, he was relatively normal. Gennady was born in Vitebsk, Polotsk, close to Byelorussia SSR in 1947. On May 14, 1971, Gennady came back from military service to find out his girlfriend had left him, and worse, married somebody else. After the breakup, he contemplated suicide, even taking a piece of noose with him. While on the road to his parents’ house, Gennady came across a young woman. To vent his anger, he killed the young girl by strangling her. Afterwards, he killed another girl by October and two other women in 1972. In 1973, Gennady graduated from technical school and started work. Three years later, he married and had two children. Meanwhile, the murders went on. Gennady found a job in a machine repair service and his outward appearance was that of a family man and serious worker. 3. Dean Corll Known as The Candy Man or the Pied Piper, Corll earned his nickname since he would often give children free candy. His family ran a candy store in Houston, Texas but when the business closed, Corll trained to become an electrician. Soon, he ended up making friends with young male teens instead of guys his age. One of the first he befriended was then 12-year old, David Owen Brooks. Brooks became a constant companion to Corll seeing him as a father figure. By 1969, a sexual relationship developed between the two at the urging of Corll. He would give Brooks gifts and money in exchange. By 1970, Dean Corll killed his first known victim. 2. William Bonin In a span of a year, from August 1979 to June 1980, William Bonin haunted the freeways of Los Angeles and Orange County, California. Worse, while Bonin was vicious on his own, he also had three other accomplices who actively participated in his killings. Born Willian George Bonin on January 8, 1947, the twice paroled sex offender grew up in a dysfunctional family. Both his parents were alcoholics who left him and his two brothers in the care of their grandfather – a convicted child molester. By 1961, the family moved to California. It was in this new home in Angell Street, Downey that Bonin would molest his younger brother as well as various neighborhood kids – luring them with alcohol. After finishing high school, he got engaged and joined the Air Force. 1. Paul John Knowles Given up to foster homes and reformatories at a young age by his father, Paul John Knowles grew up in a dysfunctional environment. By the time he was 19 in early 1974, he was incarcerated for petty crime and it was here he began correspondence with a San Francisco divorcee named, Angela Covic. During a prison visit, Knowles proposed to Angela and she agreed. She then hired him a legal counsel and became instrumental in getting Knowles out of prison. Afterwards, Knowles flew to California to live with her. However, a psychic told Angela “a dangerous man” was going to enter her life so she ended the relationship with him and cancelled the wedding. According to Knowles, that same night she broke off their

Paul John Knowles becomes the "Cassanova Killer" and cuts a trail through the United States killing 20 people in a few months time. Will you ever buy pantyhose again?
Join comedians Rachel Fairburn and Kiri Pritchard-McLean as they explore a shared passion, serial killers. Each episode the pair will talk all things murder and macabre and have a right laugh doing it. Episode 49 is recorded as Rachel and Kiri are in Edinburgh for the world famous fringe festival and focuses on Paul John Knowles who was also known as The Casanova Killer. A real wrong-un who didn't have a particular type of victim and probably owned a pleather jacket. It's a brutal one but there's plenty of digressions from the horror as Rachel reveals a bizarre fetish, Kiri explains her hatred of camping and they both reveal just how awful shared dressing rooms are at the Edinburgh Fringe.

In 1974, Paul John Knowles went on a killing spree. Unlike other serial killers, Knowles didn't have a type of target-he killed men, women, and children of various ages. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

A lust killer who dreamed to be known as an outlaw, Paul John Knowles sought infamy. He was so desperate to be remembered; he recorded his own confession to multiple murders while still a free man, and shared the tapes with his lawyer. Knowles killed indiscriminately, occasionally allowing writers to live—so they could chronicle his story. This week, Greg and Vanessa follow Knowles’ cross-country murder spree to its shoot-out conclusion.
He had no pattern. No victim type. No consistent MO. And he killed across the country. Nicknamed the “Casanova Killer” for his good looks, Paul John Knowles confounded the police. Greg and Vanessa dig into Knowles troubled childhood and disrespect for authority, then try to unpack a confusing man who described himself as both Jonathan Livingston Seagull and Bonnie and Clyde.
