At 22, Brendan Foody is both the youngest Conversations with Tyler guest ever and the youngest unicorn founder on record. His company Mercor hires the experts who train frontier AI models—from poets grading verse to economists building evaluation frameworks—and has become one of the fastest-growing startups in history. Tyler and Brendan discuss why Mercor pays poets $150 an hour, why AI labs need rubrics more than raw text, whether we should enshrine the aesthetic standards of past eras rather than current ones, how quickly models are improving at economically valuable tasks, how long until AI can stump Cass Sunstein, the coming shift toward knowledge workers building RL environments instead of doing repetitive analysis, how to interview without falling for vibes, why nepotism might make a comeback as AI optimizes everyone's cover letters, scaling the Thiel Fellowship 100,000X, what his 8th-grade donut empire taught him about driving out competition, the link between dyslexia and entrepreneurship, dining out and dating in San Francisco, Mercor's next steps, and more. Toni Chapman aka The Moody Foody is a culinary content creator, recipe developer, and new cookbook author. She grew up cooking and hosting frequent gatherings with her family, but Chapman didn't realize her love for food could be a job until after a brief stint as a bank teller. While working at the bank, she began making elaborate lunches for her then boyfriend to take to work. After getting fired from her job, Chapman decided to turn her lunch-making hobby into a full-fledged meal-delivery service in NYC called ToniCooks. After running and growing the business for five years, she took her culinary expertise to TikTok, teaching people how to cook her favorite comfort meals. As her platform grew, Chapman leveled up her recipe-development skills and joined Buzzfeed's Tasty program as on-camera talent. While I am very au fait with the music festival calendar, it feels like there are cool foody events happening around the country all the time that I don't know about. As I get older I'm more and more interested in Ireland's food scene, so I thought it might be useful to get the lowdown on some food festivals and events coming up over the next few months, and which ones might appeal to you.Thankfully, there are few people who know more about this than Ali Dunworth, food writer and event curator. This week we caught up on what events you should be putting in your calendar. To support the podcast and access bonus episodes, join the community on Patreon here. Hosted on Acast.
