There's a quote at the beginning of the film that states that this text "should not be read or adapted to film". "Wir brauchen Gott" which translates to "we need God" finalizes the warning. I remember being told by my parents when I was younger "if you fiddle about with it too much, it'll fall off". The same can be said for whatever Helen who at every turn, in acts of defiance, tests the boundaries of social normalcy and sexual deviancy. This is the infamous German cinematic gem WETLANDS, directed by David Wnendt. You may be wondering, is it really as bad as people have said? As fairly desensitized individuals, I would say no, because it has genuine heart that if you allow yourself to look at it from anywhere other than surface level, you'll see a genuine story about a teenage girl who acts out as she's trying to get her parents back together. But honestly, for everyone else out there, this film is probably one of the most extreme examples of anything we've covered, so if you're of a sensitive disposition, you have been warned. If that doesn't phase you, the film will play to at the Enzian Cinema in Maitland Florida, as part of the Uncomfortable Brunch programming on Sunday February 4th, 12pm.

Wanna read/watch something gross? Well we have you covered! This month's Banned Book Club is tackling Charlotte Roche's notorious, controversial German bestseller Wetlands (2008) and David Wnendt's 2013 film adaptation. Using insights from Laura (who originally brought this to our attention), as well as Miriam, Juha, Victoria and Tea, Books & Chocolate, we tackle the gross out factor, ponder the "feminist" interpretation, and critique the ending.Plus: why is the film more palatable? How delightful is star Carla Juri? And, that age old question: are we just prudes? Wanna connect with the show? In Director David Wnendt (Wetlands) beguiling new film, The Sunlit Night, summer is off to a terrible start for Frances (Jenny Slate). Her art school project fails, her boyfriend unceremoniously kicks her out of his Hamptons home, and, to top it all off, her younger sister reveals she’s engaged just moments before her parents announce their separation. Hoping to invigorate her work and expand her horizons Frances hastily takes an opening for an art residency in Norway and heads off to an isolated island where the sun never sets. In a remote village, among the locals, she meets a fellow New Yorker (Sharp), who has come in search of a proper Viking funeral only to find that the Chief (Galifianakis) is but a re-enactor from Cincinnati. The eclectic crew ranges from "home" to "lost," within the extreme and dazzling landscape of the Far North. Under a sun that never quite sets, and the high standards of an unforgiving mentor, Frances must navigate between ambition, desire, obligation, and risk in order to find a way forward. Author and screenwriter Rebecca Dinerstein Knight joins us to talk her collaboration with actor / producer Jenny Slate and director David Wnendt and finding the right mixture of understated drama and absurdist spirit that informs this charming gem of a film. Even though summer is coming to an end, it’s still scorching in Texas so hosts Taylor Devorsky, Trace Sauveur, and Jonathan Romo take a trip to David Wnendt’s Wetlands. The subject matter of the film makes this a delicate episode, and naturally one of the most heavily edited ones thus far. Don’t worry, though everything is still intact including some Power Rangers, Wes Craven, and Joe Swanberg (J-Swan if you prefer) talk. It’s definitely an interesting one. With school starting, we had to take a week off, but that only means this show had an insane amount of movies to discuss. The usual hosts Taylor Devorsky, Trace Sauveur (look he’s no longer a guest!), and Jonathan Romo come together to talk everything from box office hit Straight Outta Compton to little known B-movie Maniac Cop 2. They also do a rapid fire take on the news and trailers of the week. The real showcase comes in the second segment where they breakdown Hulk Hogan’s No Holds Barred. Trace proclaims it his favorite movie of 1989, and Taylor gets moved to tears. [Note: Explicit Language Within] We are now on iTunes.
