I met Nick through the wonderful Emily Prokop of E Podcast Productions and the network of podcast connections. Emily is one of Nick's most important connections he has made through his podcasting journey. We have an 'Emily Awe and Appreciation' moment. Emily has hosted several podcasts, and edits and helps podcasters, but has also been a huge helper and supporter of the annual Livestream For The Cure event that Nick founded and hosts to raise funds for the Cancer Research Institute that supports immunotherapy research and clinical trials. Livestream For The Cure is a huge livestream event of up to 50 hours of content to watch and interact with co-hosted by podcast partners and content creators who get together to provide entertainment and encourage donations. "Together we can make a difference".April 5th 2017 Nick announced the first annual Livestream For the Cure (LFTC). The event raised over $1200.May 2020 event raised over $16,000.The goal for 2021 is $15,000.Lindsey & Perry Johnson are the highlight of past LFTC events. Both were excited to be a part of the event and then Perry was diagnosed shortly before the 2nd event with stage 4 cancer. Donations were raised to help them on their journey and sadly Perry passed away a few months before the 3rd event in 2019. However, Lindsey came back to participate in the 3rd event. Cancer affects everyone and that's why LFTC is so important to Nick and I and everyone who participates. When Nick found the Sunshine & PowerCuts podcast he was drawn to the Sunshine episodes. They helped him check in with himself and rediscover his light during particularly dark times. Nick says that it saved his life, and it is beyond incredible to know the impact it had for him and I am so grateful it helped because Nick gives so much to the world and he has so much more to give!Nick hosts a podcast called Nikoli's Kitchen in which he shares his journey in his kitchen and with positivity and Nick mentioned that it has roots in the Sunshine episodes of Sunshine & PowerCuts. We briefly touch on his previous show the RestauRant Podcast which was born from something negative, as opposed to Nikoli's Kitchen which is founded in positivity. Nikoli's Kitchen radiates honesty and is a project that Nick wants to remain genuine. He talks about the truth that sometimes things don't work out. And other times you smash them out of the ballpark beyond expectations. "You win some, you lose some." Nick highlights that it is a conscious choice to be positive. We aren't always going to have good times. The key is to acknowledge your limitations and accept that it's ok to step back, ask for help and to take a break. I share briefly about my journey of self-acceptance and that I still need the reminders and lessons of the examples drawn from nature to help get me through. Walking has helped Nick to reconnect with his breathing, and give him fresh perspective. Playing video games helps him relieve stress. And having a supportive partner has been a huge light in Nick's life. He opens up about it not being easy to adjust to so much loving support and he is incredibly grateful for his partner Rebecca. And as someone who cares very much for Nick, I am incredibly happy for them both. For more information and all the links for Livestream For The Cure: http://livestreamforthecure.com/Join us live at: twitch.tv/livestreamforthecureTo donate: https://fundraise.cancerresearch.org/fundraiser/3094239To buy a commemorative mugInformation about the event on FacebookOr follow the Facebook Page For links to all Nick's things: https://nikoliskitchen.com/Listen to Nikoli's KitchenYou can support Nick on Patreon If you have a connection with Nick we'd love to hear from you!Or if you've made a connection to him or something he mentioned after listening, please share them with us.And if you know of anyone who may benefit from listening to and learning from Nick please share this episode with them too.

Travel Gluten Free Podcast Episode 125 Fun Things to Do and Gluten Free Restaurants in Kanab, Utah   Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast, where you can listen in on how to lead a gluten-free lifestyle with more fun and ease! Travel Gluten Free gives you valuable information from finding a safe restaurant to knowing what food is safe to eat when you travel, I'll be with you every step of the way on your gluten-free journey. Lead your gluten-free life, don't let being gluten-free lead your life. Enjoy Food, Enjoy Travel, and Enjoy Life with your show host, Elikqitie!   In this episode, I’m giving you the 411 on fun things to do in Kanab, Utah! You may not have heard about Kanab, but if you are an outdoor enthusiast, Kanab is a best-kept secret for outdoor fun! With so many slot canyons, hiking trails, and beautiful landscapes, Kanab is a great place to go if you love the outdoors minus lots of crowds.   Balloons and Tunes Roundup Hot Air Balloon Festival in Kanab   For a fun and exciting event, check out Balloons and Tunes Roundup! Held the third weekend in February, Balloons and Tunes Roundup features an outdoor market, festival, and, of course, hot air balloons. Get amazing pictures of these beautiful aviators flying through the Utah blue sky against the red rock of southern Utah, talk to balloon owners and enjoy the excitement of watching hot air balloons travel in the sky.   Outdoor Activity Hiking in Kanab Utah   Dinosaur Tracks hike is 2.9 miles north on 89, hike out through the trail up to the plateau and see Make real tracks of ancient dinosaurs who roamed across the land millions of years ago! See images of these on my Instagram.   The Wave is one of the most famous photographed hikes with gorgeous strips of red rock hills everywhere! To take this amazing hike, you’ll need to attend the lottery to get a permit to hike The Wave. Definitely obtain a permit as rangers are there to patrol, and the fine is $100,000 for illegal hiking as this is an environmentally sensitive area. The drawing for The Wave permit occurs at 9 a.m. (arrive by 8:30 to fill out an application). If a permit is won, it will be for the following day. In the winter months, the Grand Staircase Office draws for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday’s permits on Friday.   If you miss the Wave permit, check out White Pocket slot canyons. While you’ll need an ATV to get into Hike White Pocket is a great alternative that doesn’t require a permit. With either location, we recommend hiring a local guide. You can get there on highway 89 mile marker 01. Another amazing slot canyon to hike in Kanab is Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon. Head north 8.1 miles on 89 Make a right (road not labeled) onto the turnoff for the Peek-a-boo trailhead. Three miles of dry wash after paved highway. We hired a guide and went canyoneering, which was a blast!    The Toadstools is an easy 1.5-mile hike each way with scenery that looks like you've landed on another planet! Take highway 89 east to milepost 20. Slow down to look for the trailhead as it's right off the road but can be easily missed when traveling at highway speed.   Coral Pink Sand Dunes is a great family-friendly Utah state park where you can get beautiful photographs of Utah sand dunes. Avoid going there in the summer heat!   Squaw Trailhead is a local Kanab hike that is located behind Jacob Hamlin Park. Nice view of the city and red rock from the top of the trail.   Gluten Free Restaurants in Kanab, Utah   There are four restaurants that I would highly recommend visiting when you are in Kanab! First, Vermillion 45 is the only French restaurant in downtown Kanab but is the best French restaurant I’ve been to in the US and has all their gluten-free offerings labeled. Wild Thyme Cafe has excellent American fare and many gluten-free offerings. They have several vegetarian and vegan dishes as well! Rocking V Cafe offers sandwiches and a good selection of gluten-free offerings for the entire family. Peekaboo Canyon Wood Fired Kitchen has amazing gluten-free wood-fired pizzas and incredible gluten-free desserts that you will absolutely love! I talked to some amazing podcast hosts and podcast professionals when I was at Podfest in Orlando. It was a great experience, and many experts were kind enough to share podcast tips that will help podcasters and especially beginners have a smooth start and a show that they feel great about. Super Joe Pardo who runs the Independent Podcast Conference shares the importance of letting your personality shine through and the goal that you should have to move the needle.  Then I talk with Glenn the Geek who has been podcasting since 2006 and has hosted thousands of shows. He runs the Horse Radio Network and the Florida Podcast Network. Glenn talks about the importance of consistency and what sponsors are really looking for. If advertising is something you are interested in, his advice is very useful. Chris Curran from Podcast Engineering School shares tips for microphone technique including how to speak soft and low and speak loudly.  Harry Duran from Podcast Junkies talks about how to leverage the power of SEO in your podcast and how and why you should do that. If legal issues are something you’re concerned about, pay special attention to this next clip from Gordon Firemark, the podcast lawyer. Gordon talks about protecting your brand and content and gives us information on the types of consent forms and contracts that are useful to podcasters.  Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting gives super good advice about what new podcasters really shouldn’t do. Even though it's a common mistake that many make. Jeni Wren Stottrup from Gritty Birds Podcasting gives a great tip for avoiding perfectionism and fear. Craig from Ingles Podcast talks about the importance of audience engagement. Coach Chris from The Personal Branding Playbook talks about how important marketing is. Emily Peck Prokop from E Podcast Productions talks about not trying to do everything all at once, and Christy Haussler from Team Podcast rounds out the show with her advice on rankings and list building.  Show Notes: [03:13] Super Joe Pardo runs the Independent Podcast Conference, and he feels that it's important to have your personality come out in your podcast. The goal all the time is to move the needle and make people feel something. [04:09] Glenn the Geek is from the Horse Radio and Florida Podcast Network. He's been podcasting since 2006. It takes awhile to make money. You need to be consistent. Sponsors are buying you not your show.  [06:27] Go to small companies in your niche. Work with them and involve them from the beginning. [07:53] Chris Curran runs Podcast Engineering School. He teaches people how to engineer and produce podcasts at a professional level. He also hosts the podcast engineering show. [08:43] Microphone technique is really important. Stay close and speak into the microphone from the right angle. You can get closer to sound soft and low. Lean back to say something loud. Be passionate and love what you are talking about. [09:26] Harry Duran is the host of Podcast Junkies. His tip is to leverage the SEO power of podcasting. Choose a name that people are searching for that also speaks to a pain point. [10:08] Be careful how you choose your name and what you put in your description. Choose words that people are searching for. [10:16] Gordon Firemark is the podcast lawyer. Creating media content is big business, so think of yourself as a business. You may need to form a company. [11:10] Protect yourself by protecting your title and your brand. Register a trademark for your brand and a copyright for your content. [11:41] Get consent from your guests in the form of a release. Use royalty free music or make sure you have the proper license. Always use contracts. [13:10] Dave Jackson is from the School of Podcasting. He also works for Libsyn tech support. Don't compare your show to other people's shows.  [14:28] Jeni Wren Stottrup is from Gritty Birds Podcasting. She's a producer, editor, and podcast coach. Once you have a concept of what your show is then get your equipment and record right away. [15:33] Craig from Ingles Podcast says gauge the success of your podcast by audience engagement as opposed to download numbers. [18:30] Coach Chris from The Personal Branding Playbook says sharing episodes instead of marketing them is one of the biggest mistakes he sees podcasters make. [23:10] Emily Peck Prokop from E Podcast Productions says new podcasters need to start with one step at a time and stop trying to do everything at once. [24:01] Christy Haussler from Team Podcast says not to focus on ranking in iTunes categories because it won't translate to anything tangible. The list is a vanity metric. Every podcaster should begin with an offer of something free to build their email list.  [26:13] Darrell's takeaways: Build that email list. Sponsors are buying you. Don't get too clever with your podcast name. Make your podcast name easily searchable. Focus on engaging with your audience. Provide a way for your listeners to engage with you. Keeping a spreadsheet of your listeners is really helpful. Focus on one thing at a time.  Links and Resources: Pro Podcast Solutions You Don’t Need Thousands of Downloads To Sell Ads – The Return of Glenn The Geek Podfest Glenn The Geek Florida Podcast Network  Super Joe Pardo Independent Podcast Conference Chris Curran Podcast Engineering School Podcast Junkies Gordon Firemark Podcaster's Legal & Business Toolkit (Template Bundle) School of Podcasting The Happiness Lab Gritty Birds Podcast Editing Ingles Podcast SpeakPipe The Personal Branding Playbook Coach Chris E Podcast Productions Team Podcast Cliff Ravenscraft Mindset Strategies That Go Beyond Podcasting With Cliff Ravenscraft

May’s guest of the month is one of my oldest podcast friends. She’s a podcaster, podcast editor, consultant, and author. From The Story Behind, Hate to Weight, and E-Podcast Productions, it’s Emily Prokop.I really didn't know where this "interview" was gonna go. But, Considering we are both passionate about podcasting and are podcast editors, I should have expected we would have spent so much time talking shop. What can I say? You put a couple of podcast editors together and all we can talk about is plugins and breath noises. We gripe about people who want the "podcast franchise" handed to them. Also, we discuss some of our favorite podcasters. What would happen if Apple made a podcast creation app? The difference between Apple vs Android users in podcasting, and why I can't go to the She Podcasts Live conference. Okay, so I feel like I'm falling down the rabbit hole in the Matrix by saying this but… I've been wanting to do a podcast on how to launch a podcast, for like, EVER! You may have been contemplating the idea of starting a podcast for your business—or just for fun. If so, this episode is just for you. My guest, Emily Prokop, is going to take the mystery out of podcasting. Host of The Story Behind and owner of E Podcast Productions, Emily Prokop will help to make launching a podcast, super-simple. In this episode, you will learn: Why everyone is jumping on the podcast train, and if you're one of them, what are the first 3 things you need to launch one? How to overcome the fear of tech, and any mindset blocks that might hold you back Emily answers the question… Do I need to be an extrovert to be a podcaster? Once I've got it launched, how do I grow my audience? What are the common mistakes people make when they launch a podcast? In addition to sharing Emily's expertise, The Simplifiers Podcast has launched 56 episodes into the world so far. Hey there! Remember me? Yup, The Story Behind is finally back after a hiatus I did not expect would be as long as it has. Here's the short version of what happened and why it was so long, and I promise this has everything to do with today's topic. I started editing and writing show notes for other podcasts on the side before I found out in October that I was going to be let go from my full-time job. When I found that out, it was the week I was gearing up for episode 100, so on top of learning a musical number, I also made the decision to turn helping people with their podcasts into a full-time business in the new year. So, I spent the majority of my time creating E Podcast Productions, and if you're interested in learning more about that, you can visit the website at EPodcastProductions.com, but you're here to learn some history, right? Besides for those who are new to The Story Behind and are listening to the back catalog, it's like I never left. Although, none of this would be possible had it not been for the subject of today's episode. I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind the Pink Slip.
