Hail, O eaters of Toadstools! Ren Wednesday and Adam Whybray are back with returning guest and standing-stone correspondent Ali to talk about Alan Garner's debut novel from 1960, the Weirdstone of Brisingamen. This episode may venture further into fantasy than usual, but there's still plenty of horror to get your teeth into, with swarms of svarts, skin mittens, and of course, caves. Plus, Ren feels so guilty about their lacklustre watching of Casper that their notes for this episode include archival research. Note: We had to re-record the first fifteen minutes of the episode so there's a few slight oddnesses at the beginning, but it settles down :)

Today on Mushroom Hour we are graced by the presence of mycologist and musician Andy Overall. Andy has had a fascinating journey from the Blue Zoo and pop stardom back through the hedges and woodlands when he became interested in mushrooms back in the early 1990's. He realized he needed something else, another interest other than his involvement with music. Growing up as a boy during the 60's in the English, market town countryside, of Braintree, Essex he nurtured an interest in nature…And then along came David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and everything changed course for a while! Later in life his rekindled interest in fungi evolved into obsession as he began to see an infinite variety of fungal species appearing before him and he wanted to get to know them all. Since his obsession began, Andy has published magazines, countless articles and in 2017 his first book all about fungi -  “FUNGI-Mushrooms & Toadstools of Parks, Gardens, Heaths and Woodlands”. He is the fungi recorder for the London Natural History Society and a Group Leader in the London Fungus Group. I'm excited to learn about the mycological journey of a culture creator, artist and naturalist and his explorations into what he so poetically dubs, “the jewels in nature's crown”   TOPICS COVERED:   From Wilderness to Ziggy Stardust   Birth of Blue Zoo   Shifting from Pop Stardom to Mycology   Evolution of the Amateur Mycology Community   Professional Surveying for Fungi    Insights from Biodiversity Databases   Making Better Decisions About Forest Management   Role of DNA in Fungal Surveys   Heathrow Airport Cortinarius    Contributions of Amateur Naturalists   Tips to Making Better Observations   Process of Mushroom Spotting & Identification    Ethnomycology Travels in Oaxaca, Czech Republic, Australia   Published and Unpublished Works of Gaston Guzman   EPISODE RESOURCES:   Andy Overall Website: http://www.fungitobewith.org/   London Fungi Facebook: https://en-gb.facebook.com/LondonFungusNetwork/   British Mycological Society: https://www.britmycolsoc.org.uk/   Blue Zoo Website: http://www.bluezoo.org.uk/   Roger Phillips (Legend): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Phillips_(photographer)   Marcel Bon (Mycologist): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcel_Bon   Mark Spencer (Botanist): https://markspencerbotanist.com/   GIGL: https://www.gigl.org.uk/londons-open-spaces/   Cortinarius heatherae (fungus): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cortinarius_heatherae   Laetiporus sulphureus (AKA Chicken of the Woods): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laetiporus_sulphureus

Lead your gluten-free life, don't let being gluten-free lead your life. Enjoy Food, Enjoy Travel, and Enjoy Life with your show host, Elikqitie!   In this episode, I’m giving you the 411 on fun things to do in Kanab, Utah! You may not have heard about Kanab, but if you are an outdoor enthusiast, Kanab is a best-kept secret for outdoor fun! With so many slot canyons, hiking trails, and beautiful landscapes, Kanab is a great place to go if you love the outdoors minus lots of crowds.   Balloons and Tunes Roundup Hot Air Balloon Festival in Kanab   For a fun and exciting event, check out Balloons and Tunes Roundup! Held the third weekend in February, Balloons and Tunes Roundup features an outdoor market, festival, and, of course, hot air balloons. Get amazing pictures of these beautiful aviators flying through the Utah blue sky against the red rock of southern Utah, talk to balloon owners and enjoy the excitement of watching hot air balloons travel in the sky.   Outdoor Activity Hiking in Kanab Utah   Dinosaur Tracks hike is 2.9 miles north on 89, hike out through the trail up to the plateau and see Make real tracks of ancient dinosaurs who roamed across the land millions of years ago! See images of these on my Instagram.   The Wave is one of the most famous photographed hikes with gorgeous strips of red rock hills everywhere! To take this amazing hike, you’ll need to attend the lottery to get a permit to hike The Wave. Definitely obtain a permit as rangers are there to patrol, and the fine is $100,000 for illegal hiking as this is an environmentally sensitive area. The drawing for The Wave permit occurs at 9 a.m. (arrive by 8:30 to fill out an application). If a permit is won, it will be for the following day. In the winter months, the Grand Staircase Office draws for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday’s permits on Friday.   If you miss the Wave permit, check out White Pocket slot canyons. While you’ll need an ATV to get into Hike White Pocket is a great alternative that doesn’t require a permit. With either location, we recommend hiring a local guide. You can get there on highway 89 mile marker 01. Another amazing slot canyon to hike in Kanab is Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon. Head north 8.1 miles on 89 Make a right (road not labeled) onto the turnoff for the Peek-a-boo trailhead. Three miles of dry wash after paved highway. We hired a guide and went canyoneering, which was a blast!    The Toadstools is an easy 1.5-mile hike each way with scenery that looks like you've landed on another planet! Take highway 89 east to milepost 20. Slow down to look for the trailhead as it's right off the road but can be easily missed when traveling at highway speed.   Coral Pink Sand Dunes is a great family-friendly Utah state park where you can get beautiful photographs of Utah sand dunes. Avoid going there in the summer heat!   Squaw Trailhead is a local Kanab hike that is located behind Jacob Hamlin Park. Nice view of the city and red rock from the top of the trail.   Gluten Free Restaurants in Kanab, Utah   There are four restaurants that I would highly recommend visiting when you are in Kanab! First, Vermillion 45 is the only French restaurant in downtown Kanab but is the best French restaurant I’ve been to in the US and has all their gluten-free offerings labeled. Wild Thyme Cafe has excellent American fare and many gluten-free offerings. They have several vegetarian and vegan dishes as well! Rocking V Cafe offers sandwiches and a good selection of gluten-free offerings for the entire family. Peekaboo Canyon Wood Fired Kitchen has amazing gluten-free wood-fired pizzas and incredible gluten-free desserts that you will absolutely love! This is the World Organic News Podcast for the week ending 14th of November 2016. Jon Moore reporting! We begin with an ominous post following on from last week’s episode: Home Farming Robot! From the blog Englishery! It’s a video post  showing the planting, watering and a growing season all handled by a farmbot. Water where it’s needed and nowhere else,  a triumph of engineering. So we are not needed to grow food, produce goods or perform routine service tasks as the robots/AI takes these tasks from us. What are we to do?  Storytelling is what makes human. Maybe there’s a ray of light there. Maybe? Our next post of interest comes from the blog: Son Alegre Ecològic. It is intriguingly entitled: Soundscapes in the Vineyard. The post discusses the variations in soundscapes between vineyards. It is based upon the work of Bernie Krause. Quote: Soundscape ecology is the bio- and geo-acoustic branch of ecology that studies acoustic signatures from whatever source within a landscape (the soundscape). The soundscape of a given region can be viewed as the sum of three separate sound sources: Geophony is the first sound heard on earth. Non-biological in nature, it consists of the effect of wind in trees or grasses, water flowing in a stream, waves at an ocean or lake shoreline, and movement of the earth. Biophony is a term introduced by soundscape ecologist, Bernie Krause, who in 1998, first began to express the soundscape in terms of its acoustic sources. End Quote. I find this approach fascinating. Can we use this information, long hidden or even ignored, to understand our world a little more deeply? I think so. This seems an area of investigation ripe with possibilities.  Now we move from a newish field of endeavour to an ancient technique: The 3 sisters from the blog An Artist in Spain. Who are these three sisters? I hear you ask. Well, they are corn, beans and squash. The 3 sisters idea is to combine the three plants to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts. To quote from the post: Quote: The sweet corn grows high and provides a strong frame for the beans to climb up. The beans are nitrogen fixing and increase the fertility of the soil, and the squash provides green mulch, reducing evaporation from the soil whilst protecting it from erosion by heavy rain. .... ...The idea isn’t to increase the yield of any one specific crop, but to increase the combined productivity of that piece of land whilst also maintaining (or preferably improving) the quality and integrity of the soil. End quote. The post goes on to explain that this is referred to as a plant guild in permaculture. They then decided to apply this principle to their lives. I’ll leave you to read the outcome but it is positive and enlightening. Following on with the Permaculture theme, Permaculture San Joaquin – Colombia posted on Weeds. This post calls not for a “see it and spray it” approach but a more nuanced, deeper understanding of “weeds” and what they can tell us. Quote: Every disturbance of vegetation is met with a reaction, be it fire, compaction of the ground, plowing (sic), erosion or anything else and weeds are the first emergency responders. Every plant has a ‘germinating condition’ directly connected to the process of disturbance and repair. When for example the soil gets compacted the plants with strong deep root systems emerge to break up the compaction. Is the ground too loose, for example after plowing (sic), then plants with a widespread system of small roots germinate to cast a net that holds the loose soil together. End Quote. Whilst most gardening authorities will tell you weeds are plants in the wrong the place, the approach suggested in this post would suggest “weeds” are plants exactly where they need to be to keep the soil safe. A safe soil will sustain not only the plants within it but all non oceanic life. Seeing weeds in this light, we can use them to guide us as we assist Nature to achieve the best soil in a given location. Imagine a situation where all soils were rehabilitated responding to the signals they are sending us through the “weeds” in air quotes. Just imagine... The blog Turnips and Toadstools brings us a timely reminder with the post: Good Soil. Quote: Modern agriculture focuses on crop production over soil cultivation. Exhausted soil is boosted with fertilizers, then sown with thousands of rows of a single plant type, producing high yields but sterilizing the land. In much the same way, results-driven education teaches to the test in order to yield students who rank high on standardization, but whose minds are worked to exhaustion, unable to grow anything of their own.” -Lindsey Brigham, “Good Soil”, Circe Institute End Quote. This succinctly sums up the pact with devil made by industrialised agriculture since World War 2. By using soil as nothing more than a wide scale hydroponic medium for growing crops, that soil has been destroyed by 1% or thereabouts each year. Weeds become rampant but, as we know now, these “weeds” are trying to tell us what the soil needs. Instead of reading the soil through these weeds, more herbicides have been applied, the conditions conducive to weed growth has been encouraged and the cycle continually feeds up itself. Great if you’re selling herbicides, not so great if you’re thinking about the soil you’ll be leaving your grandchildren.   And that brings us to the end of this week’s podcast. If you’ve liked what you heard, please tell everyone you know any way you can! I’d also really appreciate a review on iTunes. This helps others to find us. Thanks in advance! Any suggestions, feedback or criticisms of the podcast or blog are most welcome. email me at podcast@worldorganicnews.com. Thank you for listening and I'll be back in a week.   Home Farming Robot – Englishery! http://www.worldorganicnews.com/51104/home-farming-robot-englishery/ Soundscapes in the Vineyard | Son Alegre Ecològic http://www.worldorganicnews.com/51080/soundscapes-in-the-vineyard-son-alegre-ecologic/ The 3 sisters – An Artist in Spain http://www.worldorganicnews.com/51030/the-3-sisters-an-artist-in-spain/ Weeds | Permaculture San Joaquin – Colombia http://www.worldorganicnews.com/51109/weeds-permaculture-san-joaquin-colombia/ Good Soil – Turnips and Toadstools http://www.worldorganicnews.com/51184/good-soil-turnips-and-toadstools/ Lindsey Brigham, “Good Soil”, Circe Institute

The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

This is what is becoming the annual Rust2Rome podcast. Not so much intentionally as such, it's just that sitting in the car with tapes is pretty much the only music I've been listening to recently that's all, so that's what the podcast is from. After two years doing the French Alps route I decided that since Mrs. Toad wasn't coming with me this time (she's coming on Rust2Romania in August) I would try the new Swiss Alps route. The driving was definitely more spectacular, if not quite as quick due to the general busyness of the roads, but it was fantastic to do the new route. And after the absolute rammy last year when there were 55 cars and 140 people, going in a group with 10 cars and a mere 22 people was blissful peace and quiet, much more sociable and of course with fewer people everything was easier too. What a fantastic expedition! And good old Bette too - ticking up towards 300,00 miles! 01. The Golden Toadstools - Silly Savage (00.21)02. Soulsavers - Revival (05.35)03. So, with the first podcast of the year I suppose I should be doing New Year's Resolutions, right? I guess I do have some, sort of, for a change. Firstly, I didn't exactly keep on top of the label admin well enough last year - particularly the accounts - so that really does need to improve. We're doing gigs again this year, partly because it seems to help with the general awareness of the label and partly because no-one in Edinburgh seems to be putting on the kind of gigs I want to go to. Actually, that's less of a resolution really, and more of an announcement, isn't it. And thirdly, we have to suck less at PR. I've got a few plans for this, but mostly we just have to do a better job of getting label artists covered in the bigger online magazines in particular. It's heavy work, PR stuff, but if you can't do PR then you aren't really a label so it has to be done. Also, we have a playlist on Soundcloud of all the new bands we're working with this year. 01.
