B154: How to form new habits that stick (ALL-STAR)

Let's talk about how to form new habits that stick. Okay, okay, I'm curious… raise your hand if you were totally fired up at the beginning of this month to start afresh, change your life, or maybe flip one or two bad habits into better ones? Yup, me too. Now, keep your hand raised if you stuck with it all? Energetically, I just felt a ton of hands went down all around the world… woof, me too! I think if we step back and zoom out a bit, we'd see that there is so much more at play here then what we thought at first glance.  Why do we, as humans, seem to have a hard time setting and sticking with new habits? First off, let's look at the data. Many studies have been done on New Year's resolutions but let's take a look at this one. John Norcross of the National Library of Medicine states that people typically have an 81% failure rate when it comes to their New Year's resolutions.  81%!! That's basically saying, 4 out of 5 people who set one don't stick with them, but rather fall back into their old habits and patterns before they know it. But why is that? Author James Clear (of Atomic Habits) has some ideas here… he believes there are 5 common mistakes that cause new habits to fail: Trying to change everything at once Instead, try to pick one thing and do it well. Starting with a habit that is too big It's better to make this new habit super small and easy where you just can't say no. Seeking a result, not a ritual …meaning it's better to focus on changing the behavior, not the outcome. So, to translate… if you've got a goal to read 20 books this year, you focus on the fact that you are now someone who reads a book for the last 10 minutes of your day, right before bed. Make sense? Not changing your environment  Rather, consider building an environment that promotes good habits.  As James puts it… “it is nearly impossible to remain positive all of the time if you are constantly surrounded by negative people.” Assuming small changes don't add up.  James suggests just trying to “get one percent better each day.” That's it, simple.  Teeny tiny incremental behavior changes each and every day are the true way to get to where you want to go. You can do this, I believe in you. It's time to SIMPLIFY. Show notes available with all links mentioned here: https://www.thesimplifiers.com/posts/b154-how-to-form-new-habits-that-stick-all-star

Well if so, you're going to love today's conversation. My special guest today is The Brain Guy - Scott Robinson and he's simplifying how to get into the flow.  He believes in one simple truth: whatever you are looking to achieve in life, it's your brain and your nervous system working together that control your life's outcomes.  Therefore, when you tap into your subconscious mind (which accounts for 95% of your total brain processing), you unlock a higher intelligence that'll help you quickly and easily transform stress, resolve trauma faster, and get back to thriving. So, more joy, satiated contentment, pleasure, and abundance on a deeper level… These are all the things you can experience when you get in the flow.  Here's how.  My all-star special guest today is Scott Robinson and he's simplifying how to get into the flow. Are you ready to step up and be the CEO of your well-being? If last year taught us anything at all, it reminded us of how incredibly important it is to take good care of our body, mind, and spirit in order to stay grounded through big change. Self-care is no longer a “should” but a “must-have” priority to maintain your well-being as an entrepreneur. My all-star special guest today is author Naz Beheshti and she's simplifying how to be the CEO of your well-being. Like a CEO, you're setting the vision for the year ahead, making calculated predictions that will hopefully pay off in the months to come and equally, making cuts where necessary. All of this requires a whole new vantage point on how you live your life and a possible shift in your mindset to level up. Here's how.  My all-star special guest today is Naz Beheshti and she's simplifying how to be the CEO of your well-being. We tackle and simplify all aspects of it, including: What she learned while working as Steve Jobs' executive assistant, inside the pressure cooker of Silicon Valley… how this brilliant person took great care of himself and equally grew the Apple brand simultaneously  Her book is called “Pause. Breathe. Choose.” - we take a deep dive into all three sections and she defines what mindfulness could look like through a pandemic How to make better choices that will help us manage our stress and build resilience, using the ACE Method: acute, chronic, eustress …and ultimately, what the “3 P's to well-being” are - pain, prana and purpose, understanding how we can tap into all three areas to our advantage, through our work. We also do a breathwork exercise together to build that prana life-force energy.  It was fascinating to hear her stories of working with Steve Jobs early on in her career, to really get an insider's peek into that world when Apple was booming.  And it certainly rings true for me… when I take good care of myself, get enough sleep, drink more water than coffee, move my body, take time to focus in on my breath, rest, reflect and prioritize it into my daily schedule, I become a better CEO for The Simplifiers. Opportunities (magically) open up and I achieve flow state for longer periods of time.   This is truly living a simplified, joy-filled life. Happy New Year, friends - to kick things off on the right foot, here's how to create a vision board to help guide you in the year ahead. This has been a tool I've used for at least the last four years and let me tell you, it works! I create mine right at the beginning of the new year and it serves as a visual guide to help me remember what is most important in my life.  Let me explain… It's a visual representation of my core values, my desires, and my goals. Every single element I put on my vision board has been carefully picked to ensure it feels right… and it's actually what I want to create in the year ahead. As such, I wanted to share my top 5 tips on creating a vision board, so if you want to make one for yourself this year, it'll be a simple process. Keep your focus on the Light and your chin up, trusting and believing in the process. Every artist goes through a “this sucks, this sucks, this is the worst, this is horrible, oh look it's pretty cool” cycle when creating art. Even if you don't identify as an artist yourself, you're still going to (likely) go through that cycle too when creating your vision board. It's a given… but it doesn't define you. Rise above. Whether it's a lack of physical space at your house (hello, homeschooling)… or a lack of breathing room and space in your calendar, causing you to overwork, strive, and feel flustered with it all. Or maybe it's a Boundary Destroyer in your life, which is a whole other ball of wax.   My all-star special guest today is psychotherapist Terri Cole and she's simplifying how to stick to your boundaries. In her book, Boundary Boss: The Essential Guide to Talk True, Be Seen, and (Finally) Live Free is a must-read for me and so many girlfriends of mine as we are looking to break free from the nonsense. And more importantly, live a more authentic, fulfilled life by mastering how we create and maintain healthy boundaries. Here's how.  My all-star special guest today is Terri Cole and she's simplifying how to stick to your boundaries. We tackle and simplify all aspects of it, including: Through her research, what she found are some common myths that women believe when setting boundaries  What the psychological aspect is behind why we DON'T set boundaries for ourselves? What's happening, really? How to understand what your internal ‘Boundary Blueprint' is and how to communicate our desired (more positive) boundaries are to other people In a work setting, what to do if you're afraid you'll be seen as a “bitch” or if you fear being fired by your client after you state your boundaries And ultimately, at home… what you must do when it's a family member (a parent, spouse or child) who you cannot remove from your life entirely and you're having to constantly state and restate your boundaries all the time? Terri is a brilliant bright light in this field of study and she's going to show us a better way of sticking to our boundaries. In our conversation today, you'll gain a glimmer into her work, teaching each of us how to stop abandoning ourselves for the sake of others without guilt or drama. But rather, she shows us a way that healthy boundaries can help us gain better communication and better relationships… more satisfaction, abundance, and success. All of it is a result of doing the work, gaining clarity on our subconscious beliefs, and sticking to our boundaries. Q: Are you ready to learn how to stick to your boundaries better? For others, the frenzy is exhilarating but by December 27th, you always seem to come down with flu-like symptoms that (totally) flatten you for days. Raise your hand if any of this resonates. I encourage you to think about what you might let go of this year as you're listening to our conversation ahead. Here's how.  My all-star special guest today is Wendy C. Williams and she's simplifying how to harness your inner power. Here's another all-star episode that I love so much and wanted to share with you today. As we round out this month's theme of “self-discipline” I think this topic is the perfect one to help us bring it all home.  Today, we are talking all about how to finish that next big project… no, really. Done, finished, tick it off the list, stick a fork in it, and be DONE. But the problem is… most projects we start, we never finish them! Why is that??! My special guest today is author Bridgit Dengel Gaspard and she's simplifying how to finish that next big project. You see, she's got a theory that  the reason we mysteriously stop within sight of the finish line is actually because not all parts of you want what you think you want. In fact, these sub-personalities inside you have a distorted loyalty to your core negative beliefs and that's what is keeping you stuck.  Here's how to squash all of that. My special guest today is Bridgit Dengel Gaspard and she's simplifying how to finish that next big project. Why driven, go-getter, type-A kind of people tend to lose steam just before completing a big goal in their life  What the “Final 8th” is and how to overcome any self-sabotage when you're working towards your goals personally or professionally How to speak to your inner selves for clarity and insight through a technique called voice dialogue Why it's just as important to uncover our “core negative beliefs” as well as your core values to get at the root of things … and ultimately, what the key difference is between a person who achieves their goals easily vs. those who don't. If you've ever bought a book or an online course you haven't finished… invested in a mastermind and then fizzled out halfway through… or started a DIY project and left it to collect dust, my friend, this episode (that originally aired in September 2020) is especially for you. You have the power to create the life you really want to live, if only you simply remembered what's possible… and make Bold Asks for what you need, want, and desire. Ok, so here's how this is going to work… you'll need to gather a few basic supplies and be ready to take action.  Here are the supplies you need: Wet wipes or some cleaning spray and paper towels Post-it® notes and a pen Trash bin And if you don't have those things, no biggie… just improvise. Don't let this stop you from doing the thing. Ok, using your Post-it® notes, create four piles: Keep and file Recycle or trash To do this week To do next week Press “pause,” write out those four categories and place them in the four different corners of your work space. Once you've done that, hit “play” and then we can get started. Alright, ready to go? Awesome. I'm going to set a 7-minute timer for us… starting now. Just listen to my voice and get ‘err done! Big things to tackle: Take everything off your desk… make space. Sort through the stacks of paper, mail and/or bills. What can you file away? What can you recycle? Are there things that don't belong here? Put them back in their spot (dishes, hoodies, bags, etc). Take time to dust all surfaces, wiping down your desk, your electronics, and screens. Okay, how was that for you? Did you make some progress on your workspace?  Were you able to declutter things even just a little bit? Also, did you find that the accountability of having a buddy doing it alongside you was a helpful motivator?? I know that helps me take action on things that I'm procrastinating on. So, well done on decluttering your workspace! It's amazing what you can accomplish in seven minutes like that. Feel free to do it over and over again if you need a longer session.  And let me know if you like this experimental format of The Simplifiers Podcast… if you guys dig this, I'll make more #dothething style episodes in the future and sprinkle them in.
