An unexpected topic of conversation I've consistently had over the last couple years when coaching members of my community Web Designer Pro privately is around managing ADHD and running a web design business. When thinking about ADHD, I'm probably not alone in immediately jumping to the visual of the wild 7 year old kid who can't sit down in class. But since the conversation around this has become more prevalent for me both personally in my coaching DM's and in the web design community at large via other forums or groups I check into, I wanted to dig into what this looks like practically for adults running a web design business.Since this is a sensitive topic, I wanted to chat with someone who I could level with and learn from versus being educated from an “ADHD Coach” per say. That's why I'm dang pumped about sharing my recent convo with my old friend (literally, we were doubles tennis partners in High School) Rob Chaplin. Rob and I reconnected a couple years back when he was considering jumping into a creative field like web design. Since then, he's been through all my courses, built up his freelance business and became a member of my community Web Designer pro.But in 2024, he let me know that he hit a wall…feeling disorganized, down, scattered and disoriented about how to move forward in business and in life. Now, many of these feelings are natural when you start a business, do something new or take on the common stresses of building something – but for Rob, it was more. After some self-research, he dipped his toe into pursuing ADHD treatment, most of which are behavioral and habitual and I have to say, I've seen a noticeable difference with his output and his overall energy and state. For all those reasons and more, I wanted to have an open chat about HIS experience and journey managing ADHD as a web designer and because he's so new in the journey and he's really passionate about sharing what's working for him.We dig into:The red flags that led him to research ADHDHow he started small and began making better progress in becoming more focused and productiveWhat tips, tricks and strategies he uses to help his ADHD (daily) nowHow creative fields like web design are actually ideal for folks on any spectrum of the ADHD scaleHow ADHD can actually be used in a very positive way with boundaries and constraintsAgain, this is purely an explorative chat for me to learn more about this world without judgement or preconceived notions.Disclaimer: Rob shares HIS journey, methods, strategies and medications that work for him but this is not medical advice or recommendation. See your doctor or consult with a professional before exploring any of the medications that are mentioned.Head to the show notes to get all links and resources we mentioned along with a full transcription of this episode at joshhall.co/364

If you or someone in your life has ADHD you know it's like marching to the beat of your own drum. As someone diagnosed at 16 (rare in the ‘90s), I've worked hard to implement and discover natural solutions for managing ADHD. ADHD is often misunderstood, especially in women. While boys are traditionally diagnosed for being disruptive, girls can exhibit subtler signs, like “spacing out” or daydreaming. Your brain isn't broken; it simply works differently. This mindset shift has been huge for me! Here are some lifestyle changes I recommend: Physical Activity: Movement fuels focus. Daily exercise—even as simple as a walk—can significantly improve concentration. Sleep Hygiene: Quality sleep is essential for brain recovery. Sleep deprivation hits harder for those with ADHD. Nutrition: Prioritize protein and healthy fats to stabilize energy levels and support neurotransmitter production. Caffeine with Purpose: For many, a small dose of caffeine can actually enhance focus, especially during challenging phases of the menstrual cycle. People with ADHD excel in short bursts of productivity. Build a schedule that includes: Brain Breaks: Alternate between focused work and rest. Even a 10-minute walk or meditation can reset your mind. Flexible Workspaces: If you can, design your environment to minimize distractions and suit your energy flow. ADHD symptoms fluctuate with hormonal changes, especially during the menstrual cycle. Understanding your cycle and aligning your tasks with high-energy phases can make a huge difference. For example: Follicular Phase (Days 1–14): Higher estrogen supports focus. Use this phase for detail-oriented work. Luteal Phase (Days 15–28): With higher progesterone, energy may dip, making simpler tasks or creative work a better fit. Check Your Dopamine Levels ADHD often ties back to dopamine deficiency. Simple steps to boost dopamine include: Engaging in activities that bring you joy. Exploring natural supplements, like adaptogenic herbs, to support adrenal health. Managing ADHD naturally is about tailoring your lifestyle to your brain's needs. It's a journey of trial and error, but the rewards—a focused, fulfilling life—are well worth it.

Technology meets art as Ceri is joined by Mexican-Canadian media artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, whose works are in collections worldwide such as MoMA, Guggenheim, TATE, Reina Sofía, and Hirshhorn. He shares his journey from nightclub owner's son to internationally acclaimed artist and how it shaped his unique approach to creating participatory experiences. From transforming the US-Mexico border to making climate change audible through 481 speakers, Rafael gives his thoughts about managing ADHD, building a successful studio, and the delicate balance of working with major brands while maintaining artistic integrity. KEY TAKEAWAYS Early exposure to nightclub culture and theatrical environments influenced Rafael's approach to creating participatory art installations that come alive only when people engage with them. The democratisation of technology has transformed media art from being institution dependent to being more accessible, leading to an explosion of digital creation worldwide. Managing ADHD has been both a challenge and an asset for Rafael; he credits his condition for helping him work under pressure and maintain the necessary denial to tackle seemingly impossible projects. The artist's studio operates like a theatrical production, with Rafael as director rather than a solitary creator, involving specialists from 10 different countries. Environmental consciousness has become central to his practice, including scientific collaboration to minimise the impact on migratory birds and transition to more sustainable technologies. Rafael uses three key filters for project selection: intellectual/philosophical interest, time investment required, and economics, maintaining about 20% of work as non-profit. The relationship between art and corporate sponsorship requires careful navigation to maintain artistic legitimacy while ensuring financial sustainability. Art institutions face a tension between meaningful engagement with digital art and the temptation to use technology merely for spectacle and attendance numbers. BEST MOMENTS "My talent is more in getting teams together. And there is a name for this, it's like a theatrical director... there's still a vision, it's the director's vision, that is followed." "Ultimately what I'm interested in art is in creating a good party, it is only when people come in that the party really begins, it really is dependent on participation." "I got off of Ritalin so that I could continue a life of denial because it's the only way to lie to yourself that these things can actually be accomplished." "I am not interested in growth. I want de-growth...I don't want to become a massive company, but what I do want is not to grow in personnel or space. I want to grow in time." "The genius artist who did something and then out of this one idea created a career doesn't exist. It's the perseverance." "You'll never be satisfied. You'll always think that the next artwork is better than anything you've done in the past." Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is often perceived as a static diagnosis– one that people carry with them throughout their lives with little to no change. But, new research may just change that view of ADHD all together. A recent study in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry suggests that ADHD symptoms can actually fluctuate over time due to influence from environmental factors. In fact, for many individuals, symptoms can mellow out year after year - especially for people who are navigating a busy life. Guest: Maggie Sibley, a clinical psychologist and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and Seattle Children's Hospital. She's also the lead author of the new study. It's ADHD Awareness Month, so Fearne's reflecting on some of the conversations she's had about neurodiversity on the show that'll hopefully help you understand either yourself, or someone you love, even better... First, what are the signs and symptoms of ADHD? Do you recognise more of the hyperactive & impulsive symptoms like rashly spending money and substance addiction, or the inattentive ones like problems with working memory and organisation? Then there's chat about how having undiagnosed ADHD can lead to mental health problems, why there's so much shame in the neurodivergent community, and how to advocate for your needs in the workplace. Can ADHD be managed with lifestyle factors like nutrition and movement, or might you or a loved one benefit from medication? Plus, why it's so important to differentiate between neurodivergence and the emotional dysregulation everyone can experience. Nick is a Harvard trained psychiatrist who's developed a unique approach to managing ADHD without the use of some of the most common stimulant medications like Adderall or Ritalin. We chat about the explosion in prescribing stimulant medications during the pandemic and the rise of companies like Cerebral. The pros and cons of using stimulants to treat ADHD, the importance of developing executive functioning skills and not just relying on a medication. Again, we touch on the subject of temporary use of medication while working in therapy vs staying on meds long term, and why ADHD tends to fall into the latter with many patients taking a stimulant medication long term without working on any of the non-medication interventions that Nick describes. Lastly we talk in detail about Nick's clinical approach in working with patients with ADHD and the Bio, Psycho, Social interventions that he uses which can include; therapy, coaching, non stimulant medications, supplements, diet, exercise, sleep and more. ** Couple of points to note, in the intro I refer to Nick treating ADHD without the use of medication, this is not quite accurate.. As you'll hear he treats without controlled substances like stimulants or benzodiazepines, but he does use other medications like antidepressants. Nick also mis-quoted a book by Nick Norwitz's. The approach is called Medi-keto, not Ketotarian. https://a.co/d/j2ofBAQ Uncontrolled Substances: how tele-health company Cerebral set out to shake up the mental health industry and ended up under federal investigation. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5eKfXdhLOjl7mrfbq0jF7e Nissen Clinic (Nick's private practice)

We're constantly learning more about the world of neurodiversity and how to appreciate that every person's brain works differently. Yet, given the pressure to conform—to perceive, process, and utilize information in the "right" way—millions of people feel as if they don't fit in (or can't cope in)—today's world. Fortunately, we are making great strides in understanding, embracing, and encouraging respect for neurodivergent individuals by emphasizing that "different" does not equate to "deficient" or "broken." Those who are not given the individualized attention and support they deserve often suffer from constant self-doubt, a lack of confidence, and poor self-esteem. When we learn to see beyond a diagnosis and tune into each individual's unique needs, mental and physical health tend to thrive.
