Today, I am speaking with James Slifierz, from SkyWatch. For those who don't know, SkyWatch is a Canadian startup that aims to remove the barriers to accessing commercial satellite imagery, through two offerings - one called EarthCache that is a one-stop shop to acquire commercial satellite data and the other called TerraStream that provides an ideal way for satellite operators to go-to-market with their data.SkyWatch is one of my favourite EO companies. I have been following SkyWatch for years and I am a big proponent of what they are aiming to achieve in the market. I think James has a very fascinating, yet concrete vision both for his company and the EO industry. So, I had him on the podcast to talk about all things SkyWatch and EO.In this episode, James and I discuss the origins of SkyWatch, their attempt to build an API for commercial satellite data, surprising learnings acquired over the years, the state of EO and whether we need more data, the significance of the distribution layer and more. This was one of my favourite conversations on the podcast - we touched on a number of topics and if you are an enthusiast of EO like we both are, you will enjoy this episode. -----01:31: James' background and the origins of SkyWatch13:57: Partnering with satellite data providers16:57: The most surprising learnings from building EarthCache, an API for satellite imagery23:46: The market intelligence acquired by SkyWatch32:48: TerraStream: SkyWatch's product aimed at EO satellite operators45:16: The lack of focus on the data distribution layer in EO49:47: Too much EO data or do we need more data?53:15: The advisory service layer and how SkyWatch fits into this thesis58:50: James' controversial take on the state of EO and what can we do better01:02:30: Wrap-up

I’ve been listening to the show for at least a few months now after hearing it mentioned a few times on some of the geocaching related podcasts from here in the States. I think this Ey Up Me Duck challenge thing is some sort of contest… shoot, I don’t know, I can only understand Mark most of the time, and not a word of what Doctor D says! ;) So I think I’m submitting my entry for October! Here goes: I found two caches with ghost in the title and actually placed one with the word ghoul in it! The first cache I found was GC64MRE, “Ghost Stories: Glow In The Dark Under The Tree” and I was actually FTF! It was about 350 feet away from the posted coordinates but the hint got me to where I needed to be. The other cache was GCB5F0, “Ghost Children” which is a virtual at a local haunted location where the ghosts of the children killed in a collision with a train are said to push cars off of the tracks.  I also placed a cache over the weekend… an idea I sort of got from listening to Geosnippits. I 3D printed a zombie hand and had my wife paint it to look all gruesome… I then placed it outside of a cemetery where it looks to be reaching up out of the dirt with a bison tube stuck on one of its fingers. It’s GC6596A, “The Lost Cemetery of Alexander the Ghoul”. Oh and what the heck does Ey Up Me Duck mean?! Keep up the offensiving! To contact the show: www.ohbeep.com   or   feedback@ohbeep.com Last Week.. Out and about with Moan-a-lot and the silent child.   The series we did: Kia's Ramsdale Roam Series by glamrockangels: Starts with GC4VVQ6, a series of 12 caches (approximately 3 miles walking in total).  BananaSource didn't do too well on the find count - he got one.  The Silent Child grabbed the majority of finds.   However, the following day, BananaSource did redeem himself on the Ingleby series.  A series of 10 caches by meandmycats123, around the village of Ingleby.  Starting with GC5A5QB Barrel o' laughs. Ingleby walk 1. Things returned to normal a few days later, when Miss Watto and BananaSource went caching in Castleton & Edale.  Of the 18 caches done that weekend, BananaSource grabbed one or two (the memory fades).  For views the best cache of the weekend was ascent of Mam Tor by jammie dodger GC2W9M8). In Edale we found 17 caches - beating our previous daily record of 16.  The majority of the caches formed the Booth Loop series, by Paperballpark - 14 caches starting with BL #1: Nagging at the Head of the Trail GC588BN.  There were a lot of stunning views during the series, but the cache of note (for us at least) was BL #10: The Right to Roam GC588M8 - just as we thought we'd cracked the hiders style, this one surprised us. Apperance on GeoGearHeads.com       Feedback.. Redbeard e mail: Attended two great events on Sunday October 19. Both were held at Coronado Heights park near Lindsborg, Kansas. One was a CITO, GC5CWJP, and the other a meet and greet and eat, GC5CWG8. And I believe you would have approved of all parts of the events, but mostly the eating part. Lots of food prepared by the group of over 30 cachers on hand. No one left hungry. The building the meet and greet and eat was held in was build in 1936 as part of the WPA. It stands out in Kansas for two reasons. One, it is on top of the tallest hill for some distance. Two, it is a large stone building that looks like a castle! Now, for you living in England or Europe, a castle may be a common sight. But here in Kansas, it is not! Several caches are also located here. So all in attendance had a great time. If you find yourself in this area cache, please stop by and enjoy the park and grab some caches! Poor choice of footwear.  Miss Watto lost her walking boots and suffered from having the wrong footwear. We were doing some walking out in Edale - an area which his hilly and muddy in places.  A pair of trainers weren't cutting it. In rugged terrain a consideration is something that will support your ankle.  In most other conditions something with a good tread and grip on the sole.  Climate may also play a factor.  In Edale, on that day, something that was reasonably water resistant was ideal.  But in hotter climates, you may want to consider something that lets your foot breath. Contact the show:   mark@ohbeep.com   or    www.ohbeep.com/47 Last Week.. We had an afternoon out at Ilam Hall and Park, in the Peak District.  The intent was to have a walk and do some Geocaching.  We did walk and we did Geocache, but we also did a few other things (such as Pooh sticks, make use of a wishing well and visit a tea room). Check out the photos at www.ohbeep.com/ilam. The Geocache we found: GC2RH4C - White Peak 1 by NT Peak District Feedback.. From Redbeard4570.. Sounds you guys had a grand time on International EarthCache Day 2014. I did! 2 events and an earthcache. All were in Hutchison, KS, USA. First event was GC5E1G1 a meet and greet and eat. I was following your advise and eating before caching! 30 plus cachers were on hand with several from both Oklahoma and Nebraska. Not bad having cachers from 3 states. Second event was the official International EarthCache Day event  GC5CQBT.  90% of those at the first event made to this one with a few on hand who were not at the first event. Both events were enjoyed by all. Last, but not least, was the  EarthCache  GC5CVNN Strataca - Underground Salt Mine. Hutchison Kansas is one of the largest salt producing areas in Kansas. This is an excellent EarthCache and I highly suggest any cacher that happens to be in the area to go for this one. All info and items needed to find and log this excellent EarthCache as "found" are above ground and free of charge. The mine offers tours, however the tour does require a fee. The 2 events and the EarthCache were all 3 the work of the TheLabGuys. This caching team is fast becoming known for both great events and caches. Hope everyone else had the chance to get out and earn the special EarthCache souvenir! P.S.- I also had the chance to help coach a new cacher from my home area on EarthCache day at the events and the hide! We also found one of the most creative hides I've ever found! GC5E6EE Air Mail Hotel. If you find yourself in Hutchison Kansas this is a must have find! Cache on! Nemesis Geocache.. BananaSource has an admission. What's Moan-A-Lot Been Up To This Week?.. GC588QR Oh Noe Not Again! by Paperballpark Oh Noe Not Again indeed, loved this cache! Was such fun to retrieve as the others have said we'd done the close by jaggers clough series and various others on route. I'd read the description before setting off but forgot my wellies, so in I went with just my walking boots on straddling the sides yes I got wet, and yes I found the cache :-) Squelched back to the car and started to dry off, boots were emptied socks off and clean ones on, you know the score but just then a muggle rounded the corner as i was perched on my (pink) towel in boxer shorts and t shirt, told the poor bugger not to ask "i won't, but is the quickest way to Edale?" Luckily the others in the car answered while I continued to change! Deffo favourite point awarded thanks for the entertainment :-) Ask Doctor D.. It cost me a top of the range frying pan, a boys sling shot, a fish tank and a cuddly toy (ok slight exaggeration there it was some posh pumpkin seed snacks) Feedback.. From Steve... Hey guys.  My name is Steve Weeks, and a few years back, I released a CD of Geocaching music called ”Found It!” by the Travel Bugs.I just wanted to let you know that I’m about to launch a Kickstarter campaign to see if I can fund another CD of Geocaching music.  The campaign will launch on 10/15/2014 and will last 30 days. Since the campaign duration is so short, the real trick is trying to reach the Geocaching community in time, so I’d greatly appreciate any help getting the word out on 10/15. Despite the seemingly risqué title, the music, like the last CD, will be family friendly. Thanks a million and happy geocaching! Check out the kickstarter page: www.thegeocachers.com/kickstarter   From Dave/DudleyGrunt... Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do.. This is also something we touched on in episode 19 (www.ohbeep.com/19 - The Countryside Code).  When Geocachers leave an area in a worse state than how they found it, then it spoils the area and game for everyone. Ask Doctor D.. From Lucie (on Facebook)... Helloooo :) Discovered an interesting fact recently that made me think of you - someone at work was asking if dock leaves really do help for nettle stings or if it's a placebo/old wives' tale sort of thing.
