Welcome to this second GPS Training podcast for this month, it's our 34th episode. With the current lockdown in the UK we are creating two Podcasts a month, rather than our usual one to hopefully keep you entertained. In this month's we again have Ian and me Jon, both from GPS Training.Have you been up to much Ian over the past month? So, without further ado let's get on with today's podcast …… This month's Podcast we are going to look at - · Geocaching, what is it and how with the current lockdown you could go geocaching as part of your one hour of a day exercise · We look at the best Outdoor GPS units for the summer of 2020 · We then have Ian's FAQ's, the frequently asked questions Ian has answered whilst supporting our customers or on some of the GPS Training courses he has been leading. To start this month's Podcast, we are going to chat about Geocaching It's a treasure hunt with a GPS that's happening right now, all around you.Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. You will find details of all active caches on www.geocaching.com where you can register, find caches, log your finds and become part of the geocaching community. If you register for standard membership (free) you can print off details of cachesPremium membership offers digital downloads of caches direct to your GPS; this is referred to as paperless geocachingThere are two players in the game; the person who hides the cache and the person who seeks the cache. A traditional cache is a hidden box or container that always contains a logbook or log sheet for you to log your find. Larger caches may contain a logbook and any number of items. These items turn the adventure into a true treasure hunt. You never know what the cache owner or visitors to the cache may have left for you to enjoy. Remember; if you take something, you should leave something of equal or greater value in return. If you get into geocaching you will find that there are different types of caches to find the most popular being Traditional Geocache, Mystery or Puzzle Caches, Multi-Caches, Earthcaches and Virtual Caches. Quite often you may also find a Trackable, a sort of geocaching "game piece" that you. Each Trackable is etched with a unique code that can be used to log its movements on Geocaching.com as it travels in the real world. Some of these items have travelled hundreds of thousands of miles thanks to geocachers who move them from cache to cache!Once you've found a cache you can log your find on geocaching.com, thank the cache owner (TFTC) and let the owner of the cache know you've found itMembers of the geocaching community hide and maintain all of the geocaches listed on Geocaching.com. You can hide one too!The most popular GPS units used by geocachers is the Oregon 700/ 750 (adds camera) and the GPSMAP66s seriesWatch a video looking at the best GPS units for Geocaching here. If you want to find out more about GPS units that are most suitable for Geocaching please just get in touch with us here at GPS Training 2. The next thing we are going to look at in this month's GPS Training Podcast is the best Outdoor GPS unit for Summer 2020 Over the last couple of weeks, I have been updating the ‘best GPS' videos ahead of summer 2020. We look at – The best budget GPS unitThe best top end GPS unitAnd finally, the best large screen To watch the video reviews just go to our website – gpstraining.co.uk – click on reviews – and the second story down is - The Best Handheld Outdoor GPS unit - Summer 2020 3. Contact the show feedback@ohbeep.com or www.ohbeep.com/contact   Last Week/Year.. Two DNF's is all we have to show for ourselves when it comes to Geocaching, since the last show. Our goals from 2014.. BananaSource - hit 600 cache finds (we were on 400 at the time).  So 200 in the year.  Also to go to more events.  We'd set the goal of going to the Kent Mega. Doctor D wanted to up that number to 1000 CacheZilla set a goal of 400 for the year CacheZilla wanted to send out a trackable. Doctor D wanted to start Geocaching by himself.  With an aim of 20 for the year (his ambition holds no bounds).  He also wanted to hide a cache too.  He also set a podcast goal of getting Miss Watto and Josh (eldest son) to appear on the show. Listener Goals.. From Gary (aka Wet_Coaster) Brilang (From Twitter) Yup. I'm well on track of beating my 1200 goal for the year. In fact, I should pass 1500 this year. But #ItsNotAboutTheNumbers I think I will set the same 1200/year goal. It's not that big a stretch to find 25/weekend :) From Luke (aka Whatshappenin) - Check his YouTube Channel tsiolkovsky (From Twitter) my goal was to get to 2000 #geocaches and to qualify for an A-Z puzzle challenge, both of which I achieved Elisa (scrapcat) had 4 for 2014: 1. 1000 days of consecutive caching (completed last Wednesday) 2. 5000 finds (completed that last Wednesday, also) 3. Total Multi finds of 210 or more. (I'm currently at 207 and have several on my radar). 4 Claim 12 Earth Caches this year. (I will end the year with 9). 3 out of 4 isn't bad Dave DeBaeremaeker  My only true goal this year was to complete my geocalendar, which I did on Nov 15. I have longer term goals like finding caches in all 50 US States, and 10 Canadian provinces. I added 3 more to my list this year, so progress made there. It will still be a multi-year effort. I also have a general goal of adding more countries to my stats, and hopefully next week I will add a new one (thanks to a work trip). Audio from StaticJay Our Goals for 2015.. Find 365 caches Hide more caches, in particular our Doctor Who related cache Have fun Attend more events As a stretch goal, fill in our Geocaching calendar dates

To contact the show: www.ohbeep.com   or   feedback@ohbeep.com Last Week.. Out and about with Moan-a-lot and the silent child.   The series we did: Kia's Ramsdale Roam Series by glamrockangels: Starts with GC4VVQ6, a series of 12 caches (approximately 3 miles walking in total).  BananaSource didn't do too well on the find count - he got one.  The Silent Child grabbed the majority of finds.   However, the following day, BananaSource did redeem himself on the Ingleby series.  A series of 10 caches by meandmycats123, around the village of Ingleby.  Starting with GC5A5QB Barrel o' laughs. Ingleby walk 1. Things returned to normal a few days later, when Miss Watto and BananaSource went caching in Castleton & Edale.  Of the 18 caches done that weekend, BananaSource grabbed one or two (the memory fades).  For views the best cache of the weekend was ascent of Mam Tor by jammie dodger GC2W9M8). In Edale we found 17 caches - beating our previous daily record of 16.  The majority of the caches formed the Booth Loop series, by Paperballpark - 14 caches starting with BL #1: Nagging at the Head of the Trail GC588BN.  There were a lot of stunning views during the series, but the cache of note (for us at least) was BL #10: The Right to Roam GC588M8 - just as we thought we'd cracked the hiders style, this one surprised us. Apperance on GeoGearHeads.com       Feedback.. Redbeard e mail: Attended two great events on Sunday October 19. Both were held at Coronado Heights park near Lindsborg, Kansas. One was a CITO, GC5CWJP, and the other a meet and greet and eat, GC5CWG8. And I believe you would have approved of all parts of the events, but mostly the eating part. Lots of food prepared by the group of over 30 cachers on hand. No one left hungry. The building the meet and greet and eat was held in was build in 1936 as part of the WPA. It stands out in Kansas for two reasons. One, it is on top of the tallest hill for some distance. Two, it is a large stone building that looks like a castle! Now, for you living in England or Europe, a castle may be a common sight. But here in Kansas, it is not! Several caches are also located here. So all in attendance had a great time. If you find yourself in this area cache, please stop by and enjoy the park and grab some caches! PS-I typed this slowly in hopes Dr D will not have as much trouble reading it as he has some of my past postings! LanMonkey takes Doctor D to task.  Audio from podcast Caching In The North West Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do.. Poor choice of footwear.  Miss Watto lost her walking boots and suffered from having the wrong footwear. We were doing some walking out in Edale - an area which his hilly and muddy in places.  A pair of trainers weren't cutting it. In rugged terrain a consideration is something that will support your ankle.  In most other conditions something with a good tread and grip on the sole.  Climate may also play a factor.  In Edale, on that day, something that was reasonably water resistant was ideal.  But in hotter climates, you may want to consider something that lets your foot breath. Nemesis Geocache.. This one from @UKGeocacher, on Twitter UC person on bridge shouting at ducks by bazzer1975 - GC3A3HT 162 DNF's and 86 Finds. Ask Doctor D.. From Dave DeBaeremaeker... Question for Doctor D.It is considered bad form to log a find on one of your own caches, because you can't find something you hid. However you can log an Attended log on events you host, because you attended an event you put on.The purpose of Earth Caches is to learn about geology.  Since I learned something about the geology when I placed my Earth Cache, can I claim a find on it? Interesting "drainpipe" geocache. http://youtu.be/KY4-JkHLyFs Discussion.. A lot of learning can be gained from just being out and about. Feedback from Yorkshire Yellow on this: For me, and bearing in mind the age of my older geokid (she's 7 on Sunday), the education aspect of our geocaching is either specific to a location where we might be doing our caching (eg a National Trust house, a WW2 site of some sort, or the old canals in this area), or general knowledge, such as bird, plant and tree types, introducing OS map reading to her (what some of the symbols mean), and other such flora, fauna and the natural environment. I used to be a Scout leader in the various sections and could see caching and GPS skills being a good learning exercise for them, particularly the older sections.  In fact, the Scout have caching/GPS as an option under their 'Navigator' badge. You may also find this link useful when preparing your show - www.geocachingscouts.org.uk Placing a cache and writing the cache description can be very educational.  This may require learning the history of an area, then writing about it in the cache description - picking the relevant parts to the cache hide. Creative writing skills - writing a great log, keeping a Geocaching diary or even a blog.  See above. Puzzle caches can help in a number of different ways - Good brain exercise and help develop problem solving skills Learning research skills - useful for school assignments Physical education - climbing a tree, walking.  Healthy body/healthy mind as they say. Earthcaches are an obvious one to help teach children about an area, geology etc. The artistic side - Designing geocaoins, TB's etc can help teach a number of artistic skills from drawing to composition. Craft & design skills - Building unique cache containers can involve wood/metal/plastic work, materials selection (what works best and why, or what doesn't work and why).  If you're really inventive you can teach basic electronics. Tech skills - using the apps, computer software, GPSr Media skills - vlogging, podcasting, photography Social skills - events can be a great way to develop social skills.  Events can also be used to hone organisational skills - remember Geo Oly who organised his own event? Reading - there are several Geocaching related books out there.  You can also find Geocaching related stories at sites like geocachebooks.com The Random Bits.. Awesome facts about South Korea We'd love to hear from you, how you can contribute: feedback@ohbeep.com www.ohbeep.com/33 (you can leave a free audio message or leave a comment) Here's some ways you can contribute to the show: What's your Because of Geocaching story? We're still looking for roving reporters (we had a great submission from 7 yr old Zac - hear him on episode 32 http://www.ohbeep.com/33) What is your nemesis cache? What dumb thing have you done whilst out Geocaching? Oh and Doctor D loves quesions to answer in his Ask Doctor D section.
