In many of our churches, God is addressed with male pronouns. Andy, Leah and Jörg discuss some of the effects of this choice, and whether we can do better. Maybe we can playfully explore different ideas of God's gender, accepting that with every step we gain some things and lose others? What signs should singing teachers be looking out for that signify something isn't right physically? What are the red flags that someone has a physical problem affecting their voice? Singing teacher and osteopath, Chloe Spencer joins host Alexa Terry on this week's Singing Teachers' Talk podcast to answer these questions. They also talk in depth about osteopathy, how it can help the body and in turn help the voice too. KEY TAKEAWAYS Osteopathy is manual therapy along the lines of physiotherapy and chiropractic therapies. It is based around the holistic view of the body that if everything is working together in harmony the body will be healthy. Chloe sees people who have a range of problems that affect the voice. For example, any problems with your legs or back will affect your balance, which will affect your voice. If you have pain in your shoulder, which is causing tension in your neck, then that has a bearing on how well you can sing. As a singing teacher, you need to be looking for signs that someone might have a physical problem. It might sound obvious but if someone tells you they have neck pain from sleeping poorly, then it might affect the voice. Be on the lookout for bad posture too. You need to guide your students into body awareness. Get them to stand with good posture and ask them what they can feel and where. If you can teach them to recognise when something may be wrong or impacting their voice you are helping them before the problem gets any worse. BEST MOMENTS "You don't come to an osteopath to be fixed, you come to an osteopath to fix yourself” "The voice is not solely held in the larynx” "The only bad posture is the one you're in for too long” EPISODE RESOURCES BAST Training Stephen King https://voicecarecentre.co.uk/stephen-king/ Myofascial Release & fascial trains https://www.anatomytrains.com/blog/2016/08/09/pure-fascial-release-vs-myofascial-release Hypermobility and the Beighton Score https://www.hypermobility.org/faqs/what-is-the-beighton-score ABOUT THE GUEST Following a varied career in music, archaeology, forensics, TV and finance, Chloe retrained and graduated from the University College of Osteopathy with a Masters in Osteopathy (MOst). With a background in sports massage, drama and singing (both in teaching and performance) Chloe has a unique insight into manual therapy for the voice. Her approach is both holistic and patient centred: she treats the whole person, not just the voice, and actively encourages the patient to engage in their own recovery through education and home-based ongoing exercises. Her treatments include standard osteopathic techniques of manipulation and soft tissue work, alongside more gentle interventions depending on the individual case. Chloe has also trained in cranial osteopathy with the Sutherland College of Cranial Osteopathy and breathing therapy with Dr Rosalba Courtney, and is interested in optimising breath and respiratory health for the voice. She currently works as resident osteopath for the Voice Care Centre in London, and at Still House Clinic in Egham, Surrey. Steven Franklin and the Egham Museum team discuss the important questions surrounding three photos from the collection. With the help of local writer, director, and producer, Rob Valentine, the team talk about these three photos, what they say about life in Egham's past, and how they can be used to tell stories both in the context of a museum and historical fiction. We also spend some time talking to Rob about his creative work, his research process, and what it's like writing scripts for Doctor Who. Buckle yourselves in for this episode - it's a good one! #BringontheOdditity This episode was researched by Amy Stone and produced by Charlie Parkin (https://charlieparkin.co.uk/).
At school She hated games. She says she had flat feet and although not diagnosed asthma, so exercises hurt her feet and her chest. The only exercises she liked was dancing and so it stayed most of her working life with a weekly but was never that good. Jo did do a bit of cycling as she lived in Oxford and even completed the London to Brighton bike ride, spending a whole day pedalling sedately between cake stops.A friend at a company she moved to in 2000 at the age of 46 suggested they go for a jog along the river tow path in Egham after work. She knew that Jo cycled so coaxed her Into having a go at triathlons. Not being much of a swimmer, Jo took lessons and agreed to have a go at the Hart sprint triathlon. She says it took her weeks before she could manage a length of crawl and she hated putting my head under water and wearing goggles. Jo joined a gym, a trainer gave her exercises to build up her strength and she went to some spinning classes (that was a shock to the system!). Jo did her first race on her dutch shopping bike having removed the stand and basket but not the heavy integral lock. Jo states her friend Jill was shouting at her to get a move on as she dried herself in transition but she did pass a couple of people as she pedalled as hard as she could round the course. The run was incredibly tough but a lovely course and everyone who passed her (and there were a lot of them!) shouted encouragement and wonder of wonders everyone had not packed up and gone home by the time she finished - they cheered her loudly and she thought wow. she was hooked.Jo had a go at more races, She bought a proper bike, eventually managed several lengths of crawl although it was a year before she did a whole race. She joined a club and made friends. Her fitness gradually improved but the path to improvement was not smooth - in 2006 she developed planatafasciitis in both feet, in 2009 she broke her ankle falling down a pothole in Madagascar. However in 2011 she entered a race and realised that if she had put her name down she would have qualified for the European Champs. The next year she had a go and in 2013 she was part of the GB team which went to Alanya. Since then she has continued to train hard and has competed in more European and World Championships but she does seem to be accident prone. After Alanya she ruptured her cruciate ligament water skiing and had to have an operation to restructure her knee. She still made it to the European Champs in Kitzbuhel in 2014 and got round in spite of viscious gradients on the bike and run. Jo was regaining fitness well and just about to compete in the first race of 2017 when an alpaca fell on her and she broke two ribs. At the age of 62 things didn't repair quite as well as they used to but she still competed in Glasgow at the European champs the same year, although several people in the 70 plus age group beat her!. Jo's list of accidents sadly continued and in 2019 when she broke her ankle again, this time turning her foot when running in the local country park just before the start of the season. Jo cycled to the X ray dept but was told not to cycle back and was given an inflatable boot. Thankfully she could start training in time to build her run up to compete in the European Champs in Kazan and took away a bronze medal. Sadly Malmo will not be happening but she has worked on building her core strength. Jo is fighting time with an arthritic hip and worn facet joints but the break from racing has meant she can focus on technique and strength so here's to 2021 and beyond.
In 1958, a series of large, human-like footprints were discovered by employees at a California logging site. A casting of one of the prints was made by the man who discovered them, Jerry Crew, who took his unusual find to a local newspaper... and an American legend was born. However, decades later it was revealed that one of the men overseeing the logging operation, Ray Wallace, had been involved in a hoax using large wooden carvings to create the huge footprints. Many skeptics argue, on account of this, that the origins of what came to be known as "Bigfoot" can be traced back to the 1950s, but is this entirely true? This week we look at the history behind the famous Ray Wallace Bigfoot hoax of 1958, and the earlier American origins of the Sasquatch. Unsatisfied with producing the best independent heritage podcast in the UK, the team at Egham Museum has set itself the challenge of winning the My Rode Cast competition. In order to fit the criteria, we've distilled the spirit of the Oddites podcast down to just 2 minutes! It was a challenge, but our team rose to it and this was what we came up with.. Enjoy!

Tom Holland and guests highlight histories that help us understand more about the background to some of today's important issues. Helen Castor visits Coventry where, in 1957, one of the last polio epidemics hit the city. Local people were furious that widespread vaccination wasn't brought in, but the fledgling NHS simply didn't have enough stocks and medical experts were concerned about an American trial that had gone wrong. We learn that the government of the day were worried that Britain was entering a high-tech world without the skills that other countries had and was reluctant to bring in costly medicines from overseas, preferring that we develop our own. The last time Parliament sat outside Westminster was in 1681, when it went to Oxford for a week. Today, with the government yet to finalise plans for the restoration and repair of the Palace of Westminster, we ask whether history might be made and a decision taken to move the engine of our democracy out to the shires once again, on a temporary basis. What can we learn from that short relocation over 300 years ago. Top Town History features the home of Magna Carta, Egham, and the former-industrial powerhouse of Bury in Lancashire. Producer: Nick Patrick A Pier production for BBC Radio 4.
