Born: March 4, 1897 in San Francisco, CA, How did a baseball player named Lefty O'Doul become so popular in his native San Francisco that a bridge was named after him? The answer is complicated but legendary in the Bay Area. O'Doul began as a pitcher for the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League, working his way to the big leagues for brief stretches, but an arm injury forced him to concentrate on his hitting. At the age of 31, in 1928, he made it back to the majors as an outfielder with the New York Giants. The following year with the Phillies, the hard-hitting O'Doul smacked 254 hits and 32 homers, while batting .398 to win the first of his two batting titles. He topped the 200-hit mark twice more, and batted .300 or better six times in his “second career.” Lured by a fat contract to manage the Seals back in his home city, O'Doul took his career .349 batting mark and returned to the West Coast in 1937. He held that position for 15 seasons, managing some of the best players to come out of California.Mentioned in this episode:Classic Baseball Broadcasts

An artist from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Born March 20, 1995. At the ages of 7 and 8, I got into poetry and used to write poems that my teacher would let me read loudly to the class every Friday before we went home. Middle school I joined plenty of poetry and debate competitions we had on weekends. By 8th grade, I started taking poetry to the next level and started writing it in music form. I used to write about good days in school, bad days, how much I loved my mom and siblings, things I seen happening in my neighborhood, etc.High school | witnessed a lot of dudes on the football team that freestyled to get hype for practices and games. It kept me motivated to write day in and day out. After I graduated, I decided to give recording a chance. I was afraid and doubtful because I didn't know if people would like it or not, if my voice would say funny and people would laugh. Plenty of people around me believed in me and told me to do it for me and the outside will follow suit. I had a lot of ups and downs through the process with both life and music, but at the end of the day it's worth it.Linktree: https://linktr.ee/JayTheIcon

This week's episode is going to be a 2 part episode. My good friend, fellow art teacher and former mentor, Chuck Hoff joined me to talk about one of my favorite artists of all time, Vincent Van Gogh. In part 1, we discuss his early life and his first major masterpiece, The Potato Eaters from 1885. Born March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert a predominantly Catholic province in the Netherlands. His father was a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church. Vincent was said to be a pensive child. He was initially taught by his mother and a governess, then went to the village school in 1860 and he was sent to a boarding school in 1864. He was unhappy there and asked to come home. Instead, they sent him to a different boarding school in 1866. He felt abandoned and miserable. While at the boarding school in Tilburg, he learned from Constant Cornelius Huijsmans who had been a reasonably successful artist in Paris. He was known for his rejection of common technique and favoring impressions of common objects and nature. Vincent was mainly focused on how miserable he was and abruptly returned home in March of 1864 (about 11 years). He later described his childhood as “austere, cold and sterile.” n 1869, Vincent's uncle got him a job as an art dealer because this was a time when 16 year olds would be starting their careers. He was apparently pretty good at the job. He transferred to the London branch and at just 20 years old, he was earning more than his father. This was a happy time for Vincent. His sister in law later said it was the best year of his life. Unfortunately that happy period ended as he had some unrequited love, then became isolated and more religious. In 1875, he was transferred to Paris but became resentful of how art was being commodified which is a really ironic stance for an art dealer. Unsurprisingly he was dismissed from that job after about a year. He focused intensely on religion and wanted to become a pastor. He stayed with his uncle, a theologian, while studying for the entrance exam to the University of Amsterdam. He failed the exam and left his uncle's house. He failed another course, but he was determined and in 1879 he took a position as a missionary in Belgium. While there, van Gogh gave his comfortable lodging to a homeless man and he stayed in a hut sleeping on a straw bed. Apparently this behavior was seen as beneath the dignity of the priesthood and in 1880, he returned home to Etten. His brother Theo encouraged Vincent to study art under a Dutch artist, Willem Roelofs, who encouraged Vincent to attend Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts. He studied anatomy, modeling and perspective at the academie. The first major work from this time period was The Potato Eaters. Vincent felt like his brother Theo was not doing enough to sell his works. Theo said they were too dark and not in line with the colorful style of the Impressionists which were popular at that time. Vincent was supported financially by his brother, but he lived in poverty and barely ate because he preferred to spend the money Theo sent him on supplies. Next week we will discuss how his art shifted after moving to France, his ill fated dream of forming an artist's colony in Arles and of course, The Starry Night which went on to become his most famous masterpiece. This Wonderful Women Wednesday after the election celebrates Jane Chika Oranika, known in the rap community as CHIKA. Chika first gained widespread attention following an Instagram post from November 9, 2016, the day after the 2016 United States Presidential Election. In the video, she covers herself in pale foundation, saying "African-American? Never felt that, never heard of that, never tasted that, never smelled that". Rollingstone.com calls her the artist you need to know. Born March 9 in Montgomery, Alabama, Chika is a Nigerian-American rapper, model, and actress. She did a song entitled "Can't Explain It" featuring Charlie Wilson, which displays her R&B talent. Early in 2017, she created the #EgoChallenge, using the Beyoncé song of that title to promote body positivity and self-love. That year she also released a Pride-themed remix of Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" as well as a poetry EP. In 2018, Chika went viral for a freestyle addressed at Kanye West over West's own "Jesus Walks" beat. The freestyle concerned West's support for Donald Trump and caught the attention of Jada Pinkett Smith, Sean "Diddy" Combs, and Erykah Badu. Chika identifies as bisexual and addresses her sexuality in her music and videos. She was featured in JoJo's song "Sabotage" which reached number 18 on the Billboard US R&B Digital Downloads. Chika released her debut single, "No Squares", in April 2019. The following month, at the invitation of guest host Lena Waithe, she performed "Richey v. Alabama", another of her songs, on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The song dealt with the state of Alabama's 2019 abortion bill. I kept saying for her to be so young (23), she reminded me of back in the old days, R&B and Rap singer combined. Chika had a small role in the 2020 Netflix Original film called Project Power and also in 2020, she was included on XXL's 2020 Freshman Class. In May 2019, Chika is featured in a Calvin Klein #MyCalvins advertisement, also writing poetry for the brand's S/S 2019 campaign. That same year, she participated in a Business of Fashion panel at Paris Fashion Week and posed for the December cover of Teen Vogue. She was recognized by Business of Fashion as one of the top 500 people shaping the fashion industry in 2019. I hope you enjoy the narratives, which explains what episodes are about, as well as the graphic attached to each episode, which I diligently search for to match each episode. Those three have disables the continent for centuries. We need to have more leaders like Julius Malema in Africa. Most of African leaders are being bought out by special interest. That’s why every single Year millions of African are u leaving the continent. Economically speaking that’s not good for the continent as a whole . What You'll Hear: Jeff was born again on at age 13 at an old timey spiritual revival and was close to God "A lot of times it's just easier to put God on the shelf somewhere and try to do things on my own" Jeff got away from God as a young man and made some mistakes 10-12 years ago Jeff was re-anointed with the Holy Spirit and started growing close to Christ again Small things and decisions in our lives can totally redirect us Jeff started working as an engineer for a natural gas company working off-shore in Houston, TX Jeff then worked for a rendering company in NC and found it was one of the stinkiest jobs you could ever be in Jeff went through a divorce and was traveling too much away from his two sons and so he started his own dry-cleaning business With a hired manager in his business, Jeff started doing general contract work on the side. He now does contractor work full-time "The best thing is I'm doing what I love to do...I'm able to develop a lot of relationships..I'm doing what God wants me to do....it gives me a lot of flexibility" Jeff started a camp for high school age boys in 2011 after being a leader for his 2 boys in Boy Scouts Jeff brainstormed with his pastors and came up with the X60 Camp to help young man to experience God's creation and learn how to be a man in today's world 60 miles = 23 miles hiking on the Appalachian Trail, 17 miles biking on the Virginia Creeper, 20 miles of canoeing on the New River. It's a week long camp. They talk about false vs. real masculinity, relationships, finding and living out God's purpose for our lives and serving others. Many men have the wrong idea of what work should be. They dread work and think of it as agitation. We should think of it as a labor, task or duty that is one's means of livelihood. We need to do something that we enjoy and or at least don't dread If you want to be happy and enjoy the work you do, you either need to do something else or look at the good things about your work God doesn't want us to be miserable in the work that we do. He wants us to excel and do our best. Have the right attitude and each day ask for God's guidance The best way to share your Gospel at work is to be an example. Have integrity and consistency. Integrity is doing the right thing when no-one is looking. in the workplace it's real easy to lose your integrity. If you truly want to live out your faith at work and be a witness, you basically have to have that constant integrity Jeff's favorite scripture verse is Psalm 24:4-5 " Show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths. 5 Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day. Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths" and Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" Jeff encourages others to go on Mission Trips Jeff encourages men to develop true friendships with other men. He started developing these friendships a few years ago. A typical man has one true friend...it takes a lot of effort to have true friends but it's worth it Check out the Timothy initiative and do it with other men. It's an 8 week course. 4 Mysterious & Frightening Hitchhiker Hunters There was a time in America when Hitchhiking was the norm. Just another mode of transportation for people to use to get from point a to point b. Today, hitchhiking has a stigma of being a death wish because one to many people that got picked up for a ride, never were heard from again. These are 4 Mysterious & Frightening Hitchhiker Hunters. 4. Santa Rosa Hitchhiking Murders Just 15 miles from the coast of California in Sonoma County, lies the small town of Santa Rosa. It’s a picturesque American Town, but beneath it’s good looks and charm there was something truly disturbing. It started on March 6 in 1972, when two young men were out joy riding on a hilly stretch of road when they came across the lifeless body of a young woman. The police identified it to be that of 19-year old, Kim Wendy Allen. Her hands and ankles were bound, she had been strangled to death and sexually assaulted. She had died not even 24 hours prior, and while she was the first body to be discovered, she wasn’t the only victim. 3. Billy Cook William Edward Cook or simply Billy had a rough start in life. After his mother died when he was five, he and his seven siblings were abandoned by their father and left in an old mine. They were discovered by authorities and put in foster care, all except for Billy because of his explosive temper and deformed eye. Instead of being put in a home, he became a ward of the state. By 12, he had started getting involved with petty crime and when caught, he asked to be put in a reformatory instead of foster care. He was placed in detention until 17 and then transferred to the Missouri State Penitentiary. After he was released, he reunited with his father for a bit and told him that he would "live by the gun and roam." He settled in Blythe, California and worked as a dishwasher until December 30, 1950. 2. Edmund Kemper Edmunds mother was an alcoholic who was always critical of Kemper and as a result, he always blamed his mother for all of his problems. The two would often argue and at one time, she forced him to live inside the basement for fear he would harm his sisters. By 15, the troubled teen was sent to live with his grandparents on their farm in North Fork California. He started using firearms but his grandparents took it away after he had shot several birds and animals with it. With his budding rage, this sealed their fate. On Augsut 27th, 1964 he shot his grandmother in the kitchen after an argument and waited for his grandfather to come home. When he did, the moment he got out of his car, Edmund shot him too then tried to hide the body. 1. Donald Henry Gaskins Because of his small body frame, Donald Gaskins was nicknamed "Pee Wee." But despite his impish looks and innocent nickname, was a bloodthirsty and insane killer. Born March 13, 1933, Peewee had trouble at home where he was often beat up and abused by his stepfather. While in school, bullies sought him out and so at age 11 he quit school to work. Thats when he met two other kids named Marsh and Danny and together, they called themselves "The Trouble Trio." The boys robbed homes, picked up prostitutes and even raped young boys, threatening to kill them if they told anyone else. One day they all molested Marsh's sister and once they got caught caught by the parents, Danny and Marsh moved out of town leaving Donald by himself. He continued burglarizing homes until 1946 when a girl he knew, caught him. So there were 4 Mysterious & Frightening Hitchhiker Hunters. I helped him and later went with him to studio. He recorded, They Got To Go and Shake A Leg, and then I took Monty Morris with me and he did Humpty Dumpty, and that's how we became friends in the music".In 1967 Morgan was at it again, helping his would-be brother-in-law Bunny Lee into the production business. Lee was grateful. His production of Max Romeo's, Let the power fall on I, and his penning of three festival song winners between 1998 and 2002, seem to have defied the laws of logic when one considers that the achievements were attained while Morgan was visually impaired.

MAGNETIZEDTerence Blanchard (trumpet) is one of the most important musician/composer/band leaders of his generation. His emotionally moving and technically refined playing is considered by many jazz aficionados to recall earlier jazz trumpet styles. Born March 13, 1962, in New Orleans, the only child to parents Wilhelmina and Joseph Oliver Blanchard, a part-time opera singer and insurance company manager, the young Blanchard was encouraged by his father, Joseph Oliver, to learn to play the piano. In the third grade he discovered jazz trumpet when a big band, featuring Alvin Alcorn on trumpet, played at a school assembly. In his teens Blanchard attended the New Orleans Center of Creative Arts, where he studied and played with saxophonist Donald Harrison. While performing with Lionel Hampton's big band, he studied for two years at Rutgers University under the tutelage of Paul Jeffrey and Bill Fielder. In 1982 Blanchard replaced Wynton Marsalis under his recommendation in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, working in that band up to 1986 as lead soloist and musical director. He then co-led a prominent quintet with saxophonist Donald Harrison, recording seven albums for the Concord, Columbia, and Evidence record labels in five years, including a stirring in-concert tribute to the Eric Dolphy/Booker Little ensemble. In the '90s, Blanchard became a leader in his own right, recording for the Columbia label, performing on the soundtracks to Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing and Mo' Better Blues, and composing the music for Lee's film Jungle Fever. In fact, Blanchard has written the score for every Spike Lee film since 1991, including Malcolm X, Clockers, Summer of Sam, 25th Hour, Inside Man, and the Hurricane Katrina documentary When the Levees Broke for HBO. With over 40 scores to his credit, Blanchard and Mark Isham are the most sought-after jazz musicians to ever compose for film. In the fall of 2000, Blanchard was named artistic director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Keeping up with his love of live performance and touring, Blanchard also maintains a regular studio presence, recording his own original music for the Columbia, Sony Classical, and Blue Note labels. Albums include The Billie Holiday Songbook (1994), Romantic Defiance (1995), The Heart Speaks (1996), the acclaimed Wandering Moon (2000), Let's Get Lost (2001), Bounce (2003), and especially Flow (2005), which was produced by pianist Herbie Hancock and received two Grammy nominations. Blanchard has been nominated for 11 Grammys and has won four in total, including awards for New York Scene with Blakey (1984) and the soundtrack A Tale of God's Will in 2007. In 2005, Blanchard was part of McCoy Tyner's ensemble that won the Grammy in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album category for Illuminations. A quintessential sideman as well as leader, he has worked with prominent jazz players including Cedar Walton, Abbey Lincoln, Joanne Brackeen, Jay McShann, Ralph Peterson, Ed Thigpen, J.J. Johnson, Toots Thielemans, the Olympia Brass Band, Stevie Wonder, Bill Lee, Ray Brown, Poncho Sanchez, Dr. Billy Taylor, Dr. John, Lionel Loueke, Jeff Watts, and many others. Scarecrow Press published his autobiography, Contemporary Cat. By April of 2007, the Monk Institute announced its Commitment to New Orleans initiative, which included the relocation of the program to the campus of Loyola University in New Orleans, spearheaded by Blanchard. During 2007, the Monterey Jazz Festival named Blanchard Artist-in-Residence, and the festival formed a 50th Anniversary All-Stars ensemble featuring trumpeter James Moody, Benny Green, Derrick Hodge, Kendrick Scott, and Nnenna Freelon. In 2008, Blanchard helped scored the hit film Cadillac Records. Signing with Concord Jazz in 2009, he released Choices -- recorded at the Ogden Museum of Art in Blanchard's hometown of New Orleans -- at the end of that summer. In 2011, he paid tribute to the innovative Afro-Cuban recordings of Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo by teaming up with Latin jazz percussionist Poncho Sanchez for the studio album Chano y Dizzy! In 2012, Blanchard returned to his film work by scoring the soundtrack to director George Lucas' WWII action/drama Red Tails.“I’ve always believed that in life, what you keep in your mind is what you draw to yourself.” That’s how trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchardexplains the title of his 20th album, Magnetic, which finds a stunning variety of sounds and styles pulled together by the irresistible force of Blanchard’s vision. That credo stems directly from Blanchard’s personal faith; raised in the Christian church, he has turned in recent years to Buddhism after meditating with Herbie Hancock while on the road with the legendary pianist. The idea of a spiritual magnetism “is a basic concept in any type of religion,” he says. “Both Christianity and Buddhism have forms of meditation - one’s called prayer and one’s called chanting. But it’s all about drawing on those things to help you attain enlightenment in your life at the same time that you’re trying to give back to the community.”Magnetic gives expression to that belief through the combined voices of Blanchard’s always-scintillating quintet. Its latest incarnation brings together longtime members Brice Winston (saxophone) and Kendrick Scott (drums) with pianist Fabian Almazan, who made his debut with the group on its 2009 album Choices, and its newest member, 21-year-old bass prodigy Joshua Crumbly. In addition, they’re joined by a trio of remarkable special guests: master bassist Ron Carter, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, and guitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke. The vast array of approaches undertaken by that ensemble is striking, from the blistering bop of “Don’t Run” to the fragile ballad “Jacob’s Ladder;” the psychedelic electronic haze of “Hallucinations” to the urgent edginess of “Another Step.” As Blanchard says, “It’s a wide range of musical ideas that come together through the efforts of the guys in the band.”Magnetic marks Blanchard’s return to Blue Note Records, which last released A Tale of God’s Will, his triumphant 2007 requiem for his home city, New Orleans, in the wake of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina. That harrowingly emotional song cycle is just one of many large-scale projects Blanchard has undertaken in recent years. Since first writing music for Spike Lee’s 1990 jazz-set movie Mo’ Better Blues, Blanchard has become a renowned film composer with over 50 scores to his credit, most recently the WWII drama Red Tails for producer George Lucas. This summer, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and Jazz St. Louis will combine forces to premiere Blanchard’s first opera, Champion, an “Opera in Jazz” based on the story of the gay boxing champion Emile Griffith. This follows his recent score for Emily Mann’s Broadway production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. After the broad scope of such lofty undertakings, returning to a small group setting can be a challenge. “You get accustomed to having so many different colors at your disposal,” he says. “So I try to figure out a way to have as much diversity in everything that we play, the same expansive color palette as when you have an orchestra and voices.”One way that Blanchard expands his palette on Magnetic is through the use of electronics, creating an overdriven, electric guitar-like sound for his horn during “Pet Step Sitter’s Theme Song” or brewing the mind-altering atmospherics of “Hallucinations.” The latter tune, though titled by Blanchard’s 14-year-old daughter, also touches on the lifelong spiritual search evoked by the album-opening title track and “Central Focus,” which was originally recorded twenty years ago on Blanchard’s album Simply Stated. “When chanting for meditation,” he says, “you can have those moments of reflection that will bring new ideas to you. Some people may not call them hallucinations, but I think they’re all related in some fashion.”Not every tune comes from such profound motives. The hard-bopping “Don’t Run” was written solely with the intention of allowing the band to joust with Ravi Coltrane’s soprano and Ron Carter’s mighty bass runs. The title was inspired by a taunt from Carter to Blanchard, asking only half-jokingly when the trumpeter would call on the legendary bassist’s services. “Stop running from me, man,” Blanchard recalls him saying, and when Carter speaks, you listen.Coltrane’s contributions, which also include a taut, powerhouse turn on tenor for “Pet Step Sitter’s Theme Song,” came about simply because Blanchard was blown away by the saxophonist’s latest album, Spirit Fiction. “Ravi has developed a style and a sound that’s very unique,” Blanchard explains. “It’s an incredible feat given who his father was and what instrument his father played. But his being on my record has nothing to do with any of that; his being on my record is simply due to the fact that I love the way he plays.”The same goes for Benin-born Lionel Loueke, who first came to prominence through Blanchard’s quintet before becoming widely renowned as one of the most innovative guitarists and vocalists in modern jazz. “He’s a very unique talent,” Blanchard says. “Lionel always brings a certain spirit and energy to any project that he’s a part of.”Blanchard also readily sings the praises of his core group, which has been evolving over two years together to reach the deeply attuned point at which Magnetic finds them. “I’ve always appreciated the artistry of Brice and Kendrick,” he says of the band’s two veterans. “They’ve very seriously committed to developing their own unique styles of playing.”Of newcomer Crumbly, he says, “Josh is a young guy who’s very talented and brings a lot to the group.” And of Almazan, he continues, “Fabian has been growing by leaps and bounds. His harmonic knowledge has taken the band in interesting directions and he colors things in ways that I think are very fresh and forward-thinking.”So enamored is the bandleader of Almazan’s talents that he affords the pianist a solo spotlight, the captivating “Comet.” Almazan, Blanchard says, “plays with such grace and beauty. We did five or six takes and all of them were so beautiful that it was a hard to choose just one.”Each member of the group provides their own contributions to the album: Crumbly, the lovely and delicate “Jacob’s Ladder;” Scott, the forceful, rhythmically intense “No Borders Just Horizons;” Winston the lithe and intricate “Time To Spare;” and Almazan an “emotional roller coaster” dedicated to his mother, “Pet Step Sitters Theme Song,” which is later reprised as “Another Step.” “We had so much fun playing that tune that we just couldn’t leave it,” Blanchard explains. I thought it showed the diverse nature of the group, when you see the directions that it goes into, totally different from the first take.”In his role as mentor to his younger bandmates, Blanchard takes the mantle from his own onetime mentor, Art Blakey. Stressing the importance for young musicians to compose as well as improvise, Blanchard recalls the legendary drummer’s advice: “Art Blakey told us that composition was the path to finding your own voice. If you improvise, you don’t sit down and reflect coldly on what it is you’re playing because you’re moving so quickly onto the next thing. Whereas when you compose, you have to sit down and really contemplate what each note means and how you get from one to the next. That in itself will create a style.”Terence Blanchard’s own style continues to evolve and expand in exciting and compelling fashion. Magnetic is sure to capture listeners with an attractive power nearly impossible to resist. To Visit Terence Blanchard's website CLICK HERE
