Send us a textBig thanks to our guest Joe Simpson for coming on the pod and saying his journey.Joe says "I've always been active and involved in sport from a young age, thanks to a very supportive family who always tried to give me and my brother the best opportunities to be successful. I grew up in York and swam often when I could doing well in local events at the pool that we swam at. I've ridden bikes from a young age and can remember seeing videos of me running at small events when my Dad was doing 10K's on the same day. However, the sport of football and later cricket were around and when we left York to where my parents are now still near Malton, I joined local teams and the swimming especially stopped.I did a charity triathlon which was very small and low key around 2008 I think. I enjoyed that, but never really carried on with it after, something I wish I had. We had Dalby Forest on our doorstep and could mountain bike there loads. Still did the occasional low key run event, Bramham Park was a particular favourite. Moving forwards a few years to 2017, I was at uni in Leeds and the sport of triathlon was starting to become a bit more of a thing. I remember watching the World series in Leeds the year before and my Dad saying 'why are we not there'. I was at Leeds Beckett and had seen plenty of the GB team around so I looked into the 2017 race and entered the go tri and haven't looked back since. I got hooked and did other local races around the North Yorkshire area and minus the covid year, always did the Leeds weekend with my mum and dad, it's such a shame that it got moved from there. I enjoyed seeing my times improving, parkrun also has helped so much with this. Two events at Leeds really made me think hmm I like this were in 2019 and 2022. I won my age group in the 2019 race and was 4th in the Yorkshire champs in 2022. In 2019 I first heard the words 'GB age group' and can remember over taking plenty of GB suits along the way. I had a few personal challenges that year and really doubted my self in my work life and relationship life so this race was a good distraction. The 2022 event I was now involved with Craven energy (CE) tri club in Skipton where I am still now and having a great time. I would have been Yorkshire champion that year or at least top 3, but my bike seat fell off and that lost me the 10 minutes I finished behind the winner with. That year the head coach at CE really spoke loads to me about age group racing. I did a few qualifiers in triathlon but never got anywhere. I was going to try again in 2023 at Leeds but then it was taken to Sunderland, I didn't go. I tried duathlon, as by then my run for 5K had come down from 26.30- sub 19, it's now 17:55 and I'm aiming to break 17:30 by the end of the year. I went to Darley Moor in 2023 and qualified on a roll down slot for Portugal 2024. That was my proudest sporting moment and along with graduation, proudest life moment. My parents and girlfriend made it into a nice trip and I certainly enjoyed the experience. I've never come from a rich family, I've just got parents who have worked hard but not just given me and my brother things without us working for them, especially now. The cost of GB racing is a lot so I make sure I work around it all well with my work as an outdoor instructor. I'm around great people and really am looking forward to the euros next year in 2026 wherever they may be, just need the final conformation now. My main goal in this sport is to try take it as far as I can. I'm enjoying the process very much and seeing my running times now down where they are shows me that my hard work is working."Good luck to Joe in the future you can follow his journey on Instagram @joed_simpsonYou Can Follow us onYouTube - AMP GBInstagram @amp_1967Facebook :
Send us a textOn this latest episode its great to chat to an Agegrouper who represents New Zealand.Rebecca says "I'm a New Zealand age group triathlete and particularly enjoy sprint and off-road triathlon such as XTERRA. I started running for fitness at university and evolved into triathlon and all things swim bike run. I enjoyed pushing my limits and seeing what I was capable of. I have competed in various World Triathlon events for NZ, including two Cross Triathlons, Duathlon, Aquathlons and Sprint Triathlon. I have also raced several XTERRA events, and love trying out all sorts of multisport including swim run and gravel - I recently did the TransCape swimrun in Dunsborough. I also enjoy bikepacking and have ridden some epic trips in NZ. I've also enjoyed a couple of epic camps in NZ run by John Newsom from the IM Talk podcast. In NZ I ended up with a group of friends who loved doing endurance adventures! This winter I'm training for the Larapinta trail run in August in Alice Springs and the Gravel Muster the weekend after. This will be an awesome training camp 2 months out for World Champs in Wollongong in October where I'm representing NZ in the sprint. I am associated with the Fremantle Triathlon Club in Western Australia and have previously been a member of Wellington Triathlon Club, Tauranga Triathlon Club in NZ and the Thames Valley Triathletes in the UK which is where it all started for me! I have a personal website (made2move.fit) where I share my passion for movement and outdoor endurance events. Send us a textWelcome to the Agegroup Multisport Podcast, on this episode we have the pleasure of speaking with Daniel Evans.Daniel says "I'm a long distance age group triathlete. I grew up in West Wales then went to university in Bristol to study physiotherapy. After graduating I moved to Hull with my partner.Sport background I grew up playing a lot of rugby (as much as possible), playing for Scarlets under 18's, Carmarthen Quins (welsh premiership) and Hull RUFC (English National 1). It has always been a dream of mine to compete in Ironman Wales, therefore I made the switch to triathlons. My first triathlon was Ripon triathlon in 2023, then later that year I did Ironman Wales where I came 3rd in age group. In 2024 I moved to Australia and competed in Geelong 70.3, Ironman 70.3 Cairns, Townsville long distance world championships, western Sydney 70.3. Send us a textWelcome to Th Agegroup Multisport PodcastOn this Episode we speak to Gemma Berry, She reached out and said she would like to share her story. Gemma says"'I Grew up in Perth (Australia) in a sporty family - especially a very successful Mum. Hockey, swimming, gymnastics, trampolining, surf lifesaving....After high school got into powerlifting, then about 2003 running - could only run 1km!Fast forward a few years, moved to Melbourne, Australia and new friends were into tris - I resisted as I hated the cycling. But did a few events in a team. Did my first solo tri in 2008, loved it, then had kids in 2011, 2013. Finally got back into the sport in 2015, slowly progressed my way thru the age group.Younger son was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2018, so tris took a back seat - but I ran and ran and ran (helped me deal with it emotionally). Ran my first marathon in 2019 as a fundraiser for pediatric brain cancer, then got back into tris. Done a few 70.3s - went to Taupo WC in Dec 2024, now hoping to qualify for Woolongong AG Champs in Oct this year. Send us a textOn this episode we speak to Hannah Storm, great name by the way, after she got in touch and said sh would love to com on the pod and share her journey.Hannah says "I began my age group journey last year, racing in Townsville which was absolutely amazing, having only really learned to cycle properly a couple of years ago. As a kid, I hated sport, so I certainly don't come from a traditional background like some folks do, but I took up running at university and then, after injuring myself training for a marathon in 2022, I got back on my bike because I knew my mental health needed it.I'm a journalist by profession and have been fortunate to travel the world, but it's taken its toll, and now I work with newsrooms and other organisations to normalise conversations around wellbeing. I had a podcast myself for a while where we spoke with famous journalists about their mental health and the stories that had impacted them. In any case, if you are open to more guests speaking about their stories and mental health, I'd love to be on your podcast at some stage. It's my dream to inspire others to speak openly and also be a role model for women who may reach middle age and think they have lost sense of their own identity, and a role model to my kids too."You Can Follow us onYouTube - AMP GBInstagram @amp_1967Facebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.
Send us a textWelcome along to another episode of AMP, on this episode we speak to Grant Paling, a triathlete of 11 years but relatively new to agegroup. Grant says"When I was a kid I had big dreams, like most kids do.Astronaut, actor, race car driver - the kind of dreams only an uninhibited child can conjure up, free to think of what might be.One of those dreams was to represent my country. Football, maybe athletics? I was inspired through watching my sporting heroes on tv. And thanks to my dad's love of sport, we watched a lot of it!Those days are now long gone, and I thought those dreams were left behind. When I started triathlon in 2013 I never dreamed of reaching any kind of heights, I just knew I loved it from day one.I played football for 26 years (much of which I spent chasing my first touch) and whilst I achieved some success, triathlon was different. Still part of a team, the amazing Tunbridge Wells Triathlon Club, my other “family”, but now ultimately competing on my own - no team around to do it for me if I didn't perform. But I persevered, inspired by those around me doing incredible things and in 2024, at 41 years old, I travelled to Coimbra in Portugal donning the Great Britain tri suit for the very first time and achieving one of those lifelong dreams by racing in the Middle Distance team for British Triathlon in the European Age Group Championships.I followed that up by competing again for GB in the Standard distance at the European Champs in Vichy in September and despite a bike crash, finished 17th overall.I'm known for my epic race reports within Tunbridge Wells Triathlon Club - I'd love to come on and share some of those experiences over the years and also to talk about how I reached new levels using an AI coaching app to prepare for stepping up to Age Group level, especially being time limited with 2 relatively young kids aged 5 and 7. Game changer!"we had a great chat about, how he juggles being a parent and triathlon and how he implements AI coaching in his training.please enjoy.you can find Grant on Instagram @GRANTPALINGYou Can Follow us onYouTube - AMP GBInstagram @amp_1967Facebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.

Send us a textWelcome along to another episode of the Agegroup Multisport Podcast. On this episode, we speak to Andy Holliday, Gb age group triathlete and duathlete.Andy states "Previously had done marathons and other running events and before that had done a lot of time trials and road races and mtb events.I started multisport at the London Duathlon in Richmond in 2018, and got a reasonable result, like I finished mid-pack but it was enough to raise the idea of what was possible. My brother was at this time competing in Ironman events and mentioned the age-group with British Tri. A bit of investigation and it seemed like a possibility. Next event was Oulton Park a qualifier. While I was outside of qual time I was close enough to start to think it was possible. Next up was Stockton Duathlon and on a grim day I bagged a spot on the age-group team. Then COVID hit and my event was repeatedly postponed before finally getting to compete at Aviles. That was a mental journey almost not going 2 weeks before as I believed I wasn't good enough etc. classic imposter stuff. First experience of AG team was amazing, loved the event the race the build up wandering around the town seeing other athletes in GB kit. This year I had qualified for Vichy in Standard Triathlon, got there in the best shape I had been in, super confident of being able to deliver a great performance. Unfortunately my race lasted less than 3 minutes due to a cold shock panic attack in the water. Really interesting about how this impacted me and rather than throwing me off has provided greater motivation to compete.Qualified again last year for Middle Distance and Standard Duathlon for the upcoming Pontevedra, also aiming for the cross duathlon qualification. The big goal is the Zofingen Long Distance in Sept 2025. Also maybe a half and marathon PB as well. Outside of triathlon I am a performance and leadership coach and work a lot with talking about how the mind impacts performance either positively or negatively and how to harness this."Really interesting to chat about his mental issues and how he has worked them through.hope you enjoy his journey.you can follow Andy on Instagram @andyholladay1you can vote for us using this link https://www.sportspodcastgroup.com/shortlist-category/You Can Follow us onYouTube - AMP GB Instagram @amp_1967X : agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.
Send us a textOn our latest episode features Paul HaslamPaul says "I was born raised in Chesterfield. My sporting background started as a child where I was very keen on football and later in my teens, cricket, tennis & hockey, amongst other sports. I struggled to get in the school football team until I was about 14 when I finally started to grow & bulk up a bit & found myself able to muscle my way about a bit more. After school, I continued with sport at college, mainly squash and then found myself encouraged into joining the Dept water polo team as they were looking for new additions. Now that was an eye opener. My first game I only played the 2 nd half and I was absolutely knackered by the end, so much so, I slipped and slid from top to bottom on the stairs to the changing rooms. I thought squash was tough till I got involved in water polo – the toughest sport I've ever done. After college I ended up working in the coal mining industry. My sporting life was mainly darts around that time. I later joined a Sunday League type football team and also found myself involved in the works cricket team.Between the age of 28 and 58 any remotely sporting connections I had were limited to recreational activities with the kids such as mountain bike rides on trails, not roads.Over the 30 years my weight had gradually risen from below 11 stone and 32” waist to almost 15 stone and a near 40” waist. Then out of the blue in August 2018, Karen announced to me that she was going to do something called “Couch to 5k”. What the hell is that, I thought. Well I soon found out as I was seconded to a support role, which basically meant I was doing it too. My initial response was to say to Karen that I'd probably run about 50 yards and collapse. By May 2019, Id lost about 4.5 stone in weight.9th June 2019 finally arrived & that was the start of my triathlon pursuit. Southport Triathlon was only my 2nd Standard Triathlon and my first-ever qualifier. And so, the GB Age Group experience was about to begin in 2022 eventually named as in a place called Olsztyn in Poland. Having submitted a sprintresult for European and World Triathlon events, I also qualified for Montreal World Sprint Tri a as last gap spot for Munich Europeans Sprint Tri, which I had desperately wanted to do, for the trip to Munich, as city we came to fall in love with. For Olsztyn in May 2022 I managed to finish a totally unexpected 2nd place in the 60-64 Age Group.Since that very first event, I've gone on to do a total of 16 GB starts including mixed team relays, 4 events in 2022, 3 events in 2023 including another silver in the Europeans Standard Tri (converted to standard duathlon) and 9 events in 2024 including a silver in theEuropean Middle Distance Duahtlon in Alsdorf and 2 bronzes in the Europeans in Vichy. As mentioned in the show we have been nominated Finalist in the Sports Podcast Awards 2025 please vote using the link below.https://www.sportspodcastgroup.com/shortlist-category/

Send us a textThis episode features Robert Holloway, who has been in our sport for 35 years.Robert says " I played football to a reasonable standard until I was 16 and like most kids of mygeneration I was very active either doing a 3 mile walk to school there and back andthen kicking a ball around when I got home. Not much happened sport's wise until early 1984 when my colleagues at work dared me to compete in the Civil Service and Post Office half marathon at Windsor Great Park. Training was slow to start with but I persevered and finished in a time of 1hr 34m. Those in the know told me that that was a good time for a newbie so then decision was taken to give this running lark a go. I joined my local running club, Woking AC, and was soon taking part in a number of local road races. By 1986 In had built up my training volume to have a crack at the full marathon distance. I chose the 1986 Abingdon marathon to pop my marathon cherry and finished in a time of 2hrs 54m. That time gave me the incentive to pursue marathon running as my preferred distance and in 1987 my crowning glory came at the London Marathon when I clocked 2hrs 42m. I then set my sights on breaking the 2hrs 40m barrier but all those weeks of 100 mile training took their toll and it was a case of managing one lower leg injury after another. My road running days were not what they used to be but rescue came in the form of a running magazine article on this new fangled sport called triathlon. I could clearly run a bit and always enjoyed swimming and could ride a bike so why not give it ago? I entered the Wokingham Try a Tri sprint triathlon in 1989. I. I can't recall my time but I must have enjoyed it because some 35 years later I am still competing in triathlon and multisport. In 2009 not only my triathlon World but my Whole World collapsed around me. It turned out that I had suffered a major bilateral pulmonary embolism preceded by a blood clot that had found its way into both of my lungs. Needless tosay my triathlon days were put on hold.In good time I got back into something like normal training but didn't compete until 2014 when, on a whim, I entered the Hever Castle sprint triathlon. To myastonishment I came home with an age group win and another trophy for the cabinet! I continued to train and compete at a reasonable standard but in 2016 at age 62 I decided that I had achieved everything I wanted to achieve in the sport and called it a day. Or so I thought!Turning the clock forward to 2019 and the onset of covid, I was still working full time but without any sporting activity for about three years or so I had managed to put on almost four stone over my normal racing weight of ten stone. I was soon working from home and the temptation to go out for a run in the vain hope of losing weight became too strong. As the weight melted away I discovered that I was pretty useful on the bike and the run so much so that within a year I had qualified for and competed in the World Duathlon Championships in Aviles. Other championship events followed in Bilbao, Ibiza and more recently, Coimbra where I achieved my best ever finish of fifth place and third Brit home in the 70-74 age group. I have my eyes on a 70.3 event in 2026, possibly Jeselo, and in 2027 I would hopeto qualify for the World multisport championships in Edmonton, Canada. I also want to experiment with aquabike and aquathlon. Send us a textWelcome back to the Agegroup Multisport Podcast.this episode we have the pleasure of speaking with Natasha Pertwee, who got in touch with us to share her story on our Pod.Natasha says "I'm not sure that I'm really very interesting, so please don't worry if you feel I'm not suitable for this podcast!I live in Perth, Australia Quick summary of my mutlisport history:I originally started running after I had my kids. After a couple of marathons, I looked for a change and someone mentioned triathlon.I taught myself to swim from You tube and put road wheels on my mountain bike and made it through my first triathlon on a Wednesday evening at Hever Castle.I dabbled for a couple of years and then said to my friend that if I didn't get on a podium the following year, I would quit. She helped me with a bit of a training plan and I did indeed move up to podium places.I decided to try for age group. I joined a club and stepped up my training and went to Eaton Dorney via the Mallorca 70.3!! (Yes, I struggle to say no to things!!). I did well enough to qualify on roll down, but I wanted to be sure, so I drove to Strathclyde and qualified in 3rd place.Off to Mexico (2016) and managed a 9th place finish in the sprint. Shortly afterwards I moved to Australia. I'd got the bug and decided to fly back to the UK in 2018 to qualify for GB again. It was a double qualifier that year for Gold Coast and Lausanne.Meanwhile I was competing in Austalia and qualified for Ironman 70.3 worlds, but I decided not to go.Gold Coast sprint tri was in 2018 and after that I gave myself 10 weeks to go from sprint to full Ironman! I did Busselton Ironman in 11:30 (ish!!!).2019 saw me do the Etape de Tour and then Lausanne sprint worlds a month later. Still for GB. I finished 2019 with anther 70.3 and another world qualification.2020 and covid hit. We continued to race in WA and I did SEVEN gravel race, another 70.3 (and another worlds place) and the road cycling event called Tour of Margaret River.2021 was my citizenship and with that my first chance to qualify for Aus. I trained hard for the qualifying race in December and the week before I came off my bike and fractured my clavicle. Luckily in my warm up, I'd gone to the state championship for Duathlon and had won, so I redirected my plans to the Duathlon Worlds in Romania instead.2022 saw me shift to train running. I did my first 80km ultra in May and went to Romania in June (5th place) and first in the green and gold! I finished the year with UTMB Kosciusko 50km.2023 was the covid delayed 70.3 worlds in Finland for Aus. And another state duathlon championship.2024: I ran 2000km in the first 6 months to train for UTMB Verbier in July. Send us a Text Message. It was a pleasure to meet and chat to Irish Multisport Athlete Rob Dwyer Robs story, though relatively new to multisport, was refreshing to hear.Rob says"I came from a hurling back round which I played right up until last May 2023.I decided to retire from it and a friend of mine was at me to have a go at a triathlon since covid, with that I took on my first try a tri in June of 2023.""After that first one I was hooked and with the season pretty much under way, I decided to take on the pikeman an Olympic distance Triathlon in Wexford that year. That was a wrap for 2023, then over the Christmas period I was training away on the turbo and my friend decided it would be great idea to take on Ironman Wales in September 2024 which I signed up for. ""So with that done I got training and decided to to take on the duathlon season in 2024 with kicking of my season off in Waterford and wrapping it up in The Phoniex park for the national finals. With my results in that being good enough I was lucky enough to be put forward to represent Ireland at the world championships in Malaga later this year."You can find Rob on instagram at rob_dwyerThanks for listening. You Can Follow us on Instagram @amp_1967X : agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteor our YouTube Channel AMP GBWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.
Send us a Text Message. It was greta to have an athlete who has represented his country in a different sport. On this episode we speak to David Kelleher, an Ulta runner who has represented Ireland.David Says "I played rugby at an amateur level up until I was 34.I have always been into running. Once I finished playing rugby I wanted to focus a little more on running. I completed my first marathon in 2021, and have been going since. I have completed 2 Ultra-Marathons, and am training for my next one in September (48kms through the Wicklow Mountains). I represented Republic of Ireland in the World Masters Mountain Running Championships in 2022 (M35-39). Alongside some great GB athletes to include Andrew Douglas.Would love to put the green jersey on again. I have also published a book called “Stop, Breathe, Read”. Send us a Text Message.Welcome to the latest epsode of our pod. On this episode we chat to pone very determined lady.I first met Nic when we were over at the European Multisport Champs in Portugal, she had travelled over with former guest Robert Myler, who suggested Nic should come on and share her story. Nic says " Im a full-time working mum with 2 young children. Sport is my hobby and I love it. I have run from a small age, my first run I remember was a 1.5 mile road race when I was about 12 and then the school cross country races on the sand dunes in Irvine with the wind battering me. That didn't put me off and I did my first half marathon at 17 and the London Marathon at 21. My main achievements to date are completing the triple crown in 2022 – the Highland Fling, West Highland Way ultra and Devil O' the Highlands races, completing Celtman solo extreme triathlon and representing GBR in the European Duathlon Championships. I run because I enjoy it. It's an escape from the real world and I get thinking space. I love the outdoors and this gives me a chance to see some amazing scenery. I always run on holiday (at the request of the family) as I find all the great places we can go adventuring to later. I'm also quite competitive and enjoy the races…the muddier the better! I'm a role model to my children and others showing that us girls / mums can do these things and inspire the next generation. My best and worst run moments: My children being at the end of my ultra races and running with me to cross the finish line, they are my inspiration and love seeing their faces as I near the end. Worst was when I had an undetected stress fracture in my foot which eventually broke, 3 operations over 3 years until it healed and was told at one point I'd never run again. In my spare time I coach, I was a tennis coach for 20 years until injury struck but I have now retrained and qualified as a personal trainer, running and triathlon coach with Glasgow Triathlon Club. I have been leading trail runs for many years."You can follow Nic on Instagram @epicrunningtrails_nicand her website is https://epictrailsrunning.co.ukYou Can Follow us onInstagram @amp_1967X : agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteor our YouTube Channel AMP GBWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.

Send us a Text Message. It was great to hear Jo Lewis share her story into multisport. She says " I am fast approaching my Seventies decade and loving the continuing challenge of staying Fit and on top of my sporting game, as well as travelling to many International events to support my athletes and meet up with my friends of many years to compete with a Smile and humour! My sporting background goes back many, many years - I loved all the team games at school - swimming, tennis, netball, hockey, cross country running, and athletics (hurdles!)……….. This passion has continued down the decades with swimming and running becoming my Favourites for many years, enabling me to qualify for the GB Age Group Teams in 2004 in both Aquathlon and Sprint/Standard Triathlons. Here I am 20 years on still competing for GB at Aqua Bike (Middle Distance) and with a strong desire to requalify for GB Aquathlon as my “grumbling” knee has been behaving itself recently, thanks to consistent Strength and SMART training. My events this year will be Qualifiers for the 70-74 Age Group - I can't wait!My sport has enabled and encouraged me to work my way up the coaching ladder, from swim coaching in the 1980's to BTF Level 3, which prompted me to set up a few businesses over the years - Ducklings to Dolphins Swim School in Reading, which is still running 35 years on, and Tri50, a Triathlon coaching business for the over 50's!! My Triathlon coaching has inspired me to maintain my fitness levels, as I fully appreciate competing at my age is more about maintaining a healthy outlook on Life, and staying injury free. I have been very fortunate in winning many International and European medals along the way, I think my tally is 12!! A few more would be welcome, I will apply my coaching knowledge and experience to help this happen!! Am keen to continue competing well into my my 70's as a Fit Old Bird ………… "Thanks for sharing JoIf you are interested in getting coached by Jo her website is www.Tri50.co.ukshe is also on instagram and Facebook at the same name.
On our latest episode, we are keeping it in the family.Last episode we had the pleasure of speaking to Malcolm Smith, Agegroup and Paratriathlete. This episode we speak to his son Callum smith.Callum is the youngest Agegrouper we have had on the pod.He is still at college and preparing to go to University. After growing up running and playing table tennis at a decent level, he followed in his dads footsteps and decided to give triathlon a go.With the lack of clubs that had youth sections in his area it was, his dad who coached him to begin with, teaching him to swim and ride a bike. Callum went from his dad a s coach to working with Entire Performance Coaching and joined the local running club and swimming clubs. In his short time in triathlon, Callum has had a go at qualifying for the Performance Assessment Series, where he just fell short, but qualified with his Dad at Sunderland, in his first standard triathlon, for the Agegroup world championship in Torremolinos later this year. It will be great to follow his progress and you can also on Instagram at callum_smith3005hope you enjoy.Hope you find the value in this. Another great story shared by an inspiring everyday athlete.Mal Smith got in touch after speaking to a former guest, John Armstrong, recommended he got in touch to share his story. Mal states"Im a triathlete at Cleethorpes Tri Club and along with my 18 year old son Callum, we've qualified this year to race the standard distance in Torremolinos. I'm also a PTS5 ParaTriathlete and it was the knock on effect of training for the British Super Series (finishing second at the British ParaTri champs) that brought my times down last year to qualify at Sunderland. I got into triathlon after a lifetime of proving to myself that I could do whatever I set my mind too…and so after a number of years obstacle course racing and running multiple marathons, Ironman became the next target! Triathlon then changed my life and continues to do so, as I realised just what is possible!I'd love to raise the profile of Para Triathlon but also highlight that just because you may have a physical impairment it doesn't stop you from taking part in our fantastic sport! I can't wait to represent GB in October as part of the age group team! You can follow Mal on Instagram @malsmithtriathletehope you enjoy.Hope you find the value in this. On this episode we have the pleasure to chat to Anne Dockery. Truly inspirational story that Anne shares after listening to several of our other podcasts and being inspired herself to get in touch and share her journey.Anne Says "I started running when I was 55 as I had been a heavy smoker and I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis. Had just married an American who suggested I run to strengthen my lungs. So I did and that was the start of an amazing adventure. I ran many local races and did quite well. Runners in Florida turn to triathlons in the hot summer months and I was persuaded to tackle my first triathlon when I was 63. On my husbands huge bike and being terrified of the swim in the lagoon. But I survived and even won my age group. My coach was a lady of 70+ and she is still doing triathlons. It was wonderful in the warmth of Florida and I tackled quite a few fun events but I dreamt of representing GB. Whilst visiting my mum in Yorkshire I decided to find a triathlon and the only one I found was a British championship race at ST Neots. I bought a wetsuit that week and tried it in an indoor swim pool and thought I would die! At st Neaots I had a lot of issues but I got into the water and I managed to get out of the water having felt like a minnow amongst the tarpon when the 40 year old men came by!! I could hardly haul myself out of the river and wondered how on earth I would get on my bike. I had an audience cheering me on as I tried to extricate myself from the wetsuit…took 7 1/2 minutes! I was frozen solid on the bike ride and the bike I hired was far from ideal. I was needless to say, next to last! But I would not have missed this race for anything. So thrilled to have finished. It was my 65th birthday the next day,.My next attempt was a little more successful. I wanted to qualify for the Worlds sprint triathlon in Mexico 2017 as it was a quick flight from Florida so I headed to the Dorney Sprint Triathlon May 2016 qualifier . This time I had friends to support me. What a difference. I was last out of the swim: again the hired bike left a lot to be desired but I ran well and came second in my age group . So I qualified!!!Back in Florida I went to masters swimming twice a week in hopes of improving. 10/10 for trying! However was forced out of the swim in Mexico 2017 . I knew I was going slowly but was perfectly capable of keeping on to the end so was spitting mad when they told me I had to come out. I was allowed to finish the course which brought other benefits and ,later, I learnt the currents had changed and were becomingb dangerous. Hence my removal, along with a few others. I would not have missed this wonderful experience for anything. Back in UK in 2018 I discovered Duathlons. I qualified at Oulton Park duathlon in april 2018 and found my self heading to Worlds in FYn …I had bought a new bike and booked with Nirvana and off I went in July. I did not know anyone! But in short time I had a whole new family of friends. The joy of being with lots of wonderful like minded people. I had no expectations . Long story short…no one was more amazed than me when I WON!! WOW!! What an amazing moment . Still get shivers down my spine. From there I went on to come 4th in the Sprint duathlon in Targu Mures in 2022 because I ran an extra lap! The winner lapped me on the bike although we were neck and neck on the first run. My next task was to get better on the bike and I am still working on that.I then turned to Standard Duathlons and came 3rd in 70-74 in Bilbao behind two amazing athletes, Elspeth Knott and Yvonne Twelvetree .In 2023 I hit the big time again in Standard duathlon age group 75 -79 winning the Europeans and once again winning Worlds. Hard to believe. 2024. I have qualified for the European Standard in Portugal but best of all I am goingb to Malaga to have a shot at actually finishing a sprint

On This episode we speak to Ren Brennan, who is a fitness instructor and personal trainer based in the South Lakes. Ten says "I spent many years teaching sports and ensuring people, particularly children, have fundamental movements (balance, agility and coordination) to be able to live and enjoy an active life. I moved to the Lake District 20 years ago to fulfil my passion of being able to live an active healthy lifestyle in the outdoors.Being active has shaped who I am from an early age. It has made me determined and has given me so many opportunities and a real sense of belonging and identity. While I've always been above average at sport, I was never “brilliant”, and have had to work hard at it to be in the position I am today. This has given me a tremendous amount of empathy which shows in my coaching and training of others.I am a competing GB triathlete and the European Champion for my age group for the off-road triathlon. I was absolutely thrilled to be named in the top 100 women in cycling this year.I'm passionate about helping others to be healthy, happy and to meet their fitness goals. I want to inspire others, of all abilities, to want to lead a healthy, active lifestyle and to be the best version of themselves that they can be. I love helping people, creating personalised plans and sessions and seeing people improve, be it their fitness, mental health or confidence. I like to get to know my clients, and ensure I adapt sessions to suit them, whether that be the level of difficulty or fitting round their busy lifestyle.I love nothing more than being out in nature and the Lake District is truly the most beautiful place to be able to do this. If you'd like to have a chat to see if we'd be a good fit for personal training, you want to join one of my classes or book in for mountain bike tuition or guiding, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. June 2022ITU 2022 Targu Mures Cross Triathlon World Championships. This race and the result have not sunk in yet . I only ever dreamed of achieving Gold. It's even more meaningful this year as my goal was to just get to start line with no expectations . A foot injury sustained in December and reoccurring in February and still being managed has meant very little running and only since April. The bike course was pretty hard and brutal with 1000 m climbing in 27 km but this was in my favour . It was a fun physically demanding course . The run course was tough physically so I hoped it was more about who could hang on in as opposed to fastest runner.I couldn't achieve any of this without the help of many folk . Something a little different on this episode. We speak to Will Senior and David Pearson, co founders of the new platform, MY Tri Ranking. As we have had David on the show (see episode 8), Will tells us a little bit about his background and then we get straight into how he came up with the idea and after following Agegroup News which David also co runs, on Insta and Facebook, he realised that David was a bit of a data geek like himself, predicting race outcomes of agegroup races, decided to get in touch and see if he was interested in a colab. They got together and between them they explain how the site works and how they give you your ranking.head over to the website www.mytriranking.cominstagram @mytrirankingYou Can Follow us on Instagram @amp_1967X : agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.

After sidelining several sports he did for a long time due to a serious injury, it was swimming that started his transition into multisport.Matt talks about how one of his close friends had represented all over the world but it wasn't until several years of doing triathlons he thought he would give qualification a go.so playing to his strengths and choosing Duathlon to focus on, Matt put a good block of training in before heading off to try and qualify. His hard work paid off and he represented GB in Duathlon at the World Champs in Ibiza. Nice to Chat to new GB agegroup athlete Kieran JamesKieran says"I wasnt very sporty as a young kid, but was generally very active. Around 14 I decided to play professional football despite not being able to get in my school or local football team. Worked hard at it, achieving most improved player in my first season. then most improved and players player the year after. I was accepted into a feeder academy for Plymouth Argyle at 16, but it was mainly due to academic merit. Achieved most improved the first year again. Then I studied sports science at uni to support this goal. But at 22 Irealised/felt it wasn't going to happen.""I stopped any formal training, other than the odd amount of football, but i was injured almost every year or 10 years so retired from that.""In 2018 I was looking to do a challenge that scared me. So because I couldnt swim more than a length, and never put my head under, I thought the prospect of swimming in open water with others was the perfect fear to overcome. I trained and finished, tried again the year after and did better."I then did a series of bets that spurred me on to getting a coach, and taking it more seriously and then in 2023 I qualified for GB.
