In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar is joined by legendary producer Steve Lillywhite — the Grammy-winning studio mastermind behind iconic records by U2, The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, The Smiths, The Killers, Peter Gabriel, and many more. Steve talks about the release of a brand-new 4-track EP featuring a completely unreleased live version of "Fairytale of New York" — recorded at Glasgow Barrowlands in December 1987. This historic performance captures the first time The Pogues ever played the song live, and the first time Kirsty MacColl performed it onstage with the band. The EP is released on 12 December. Recorded by Steve himself — producer of the original version and then-husband of Kirsty MacColl — the Barrowlands tape offers a rare window into the early live life of what has become the UK's favourite Christmas song for over a decade. Originally charting at No. 2 in 1987, "Fairytale of New York" has returned to the UK Top 20 every year since 2005. Steve reflects on the making of the classic track, the energy of that unforgettable night in Glasgow, and key moments from across his remarkable career. Listen to Steve Lillywhite discuss the new EP, the legacy of Fairytale of New York, and the stories behind his legendary productions — exclusively on the XS Noize Podcast. Send us a textOn this episode, we discuss one of the most heralded debut albums of the early 1990's: The La's by the La's. Heavily influenced by the 1960s British Invasion bands, The La's is full of bright, jangly, melodic guitar pop, earworms all. The single “There She Goes” has become a classic, and is possibly one of the most perfectly constructed pop songs ever recorded. The album's history, however, is one of the most tortured in the annals of rock and roll.  The band's leader, Lee Mavers became known for his uncompromising perfectionism in search of the perfect sound. He obsessed over everything: from the perfect placement of the microphones, to the required vintage feel of instruments and tape machines (even claiming that cleaning the 1960's era dust off them significantly affected their sound). As a result of Mavers' never-ending dissatisfaction with the inability to replicate the sound in his head, it took over three years to complete the album, 12 separate studio sessions, 7 producers, and several lineup changes along the way. The band actually walked out during the final recording session, leaving the album to be completed by the producer, Steve Lillywhite. Predictably, the band publicly disowned the album after its release and even discouraged people from buying it. Despite all of that, the album became a critically acclaimed and extremely influential pop classic, and in the decades since its release, is considered one of the finest albums released in the 1990's.  Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

Bono said, "Wow, if we could bottle this, what mad elixir would it be?" So, the band decamps in a basement in Monte Carlo to start work on a pure rock and roll album. But it doesn't quite go as planned as they end up finishing an entire album with Sex Pistols & Roxy Music producer Chris Thomas that Adam and Larry veto. These days, guitarist Nigel Bennett is as much an entrepreneur as he is a punk rocker. I'll explain. Nigel's career began in the 70s when he was hired to join The Members who were mixing punk, pop and reggae in unique ways. They're probably best remembered by their 1982 hit "Working Girl". The band didn't last long and Nigel bummed around until he was hired by the Vibrators in 1990, where he remains today. During the pandemic, the rest of the Vibrators called it quits, leaving Nigel to carry on and now he's remarried, moved to the states, and is wholly focused on building the Vibrators back up. He still puts out new music and tours mixing songs from his entire history. It's a fascinating story we don't hear that often. There are also stories involving Iggy Pop, Steve Lillywhite and more. Incredibly insightful and unabashedly honest, Steve delivers some epic recollections and opinions that will certainly leave you yearning for more.  Our time with Lillywhite concludes with an absolute can't miss "Rapid Fire" segment where we learn who would be sitting at Steve's dream dinner table, what project he is most proud of, and the band he'd most want to work with next. This has truly been years in the making and because he has been a part of many interviews in his career, we wanted to make this one as fresh and unique as possible.  In Part 1, we dive into how Steve got his start in music, what he's up to these days, and touch on some of the other bands he has worked with including The Rolling Stones, Phish, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, and of course U2 who he recently joined in Vegas to help prepare for their residency at The Sphere. We also discussed his incredible work with DMB on UTTAD, Crash, BTCS and the Lillywhite Sessions. Oh, and we actually had Steve listen to infamous MacHead and give us his reaction to hearing it again after all of these years, what it needed to have in order to have made the album, and the story behind its "lyrics". We hope you enjoy this enlightening convo with Steve - and be sure to come back next week for Part 2 where we discuss his works with Phish, the current band he'd want to produce, and an extended discussion about his potential final DMB record, Away From the World.

On UAWIL, we regularly talk about albums and bands that are big on one side of the Atlantic but for some reason never have great success on the other side of the pond. One glaring example is Simple Minds who have dozens of hits and many gold & platinum albums in the UK, Europe and around the world but never had huge success in the US. Most US fans know Don't You Forget About Me from The Breakfast Club soundtrack as it went to #1 in the US in early 1985. But because that song wasn't on a Simple Minds album until the 90s and because prior to that they received little to no airplay in the US, many fans see them as a one hit wonder and don't realize the extraordinary career Simple Minds have had with over 60 million records sold worldwide. As it turns 40 on February 6, 1984, Sparkle in the Rain was a bit of a transition from the techno pop band of New Gold Dream 81/82/83/84 to a band that were going places. Simple MInds were playing bigger venues, becoming friendly (and competitive) with U2 and wanted to make a bigger sound. They enlisted Steve Lillywhite (after he produced U2's War) to lead them to more radio-friendly, stadium enhancing tunes. In the end, it's a bit of a mixed bag with takes on fame (Up On The Catwalk), war (East at Easter), rebellion (The Kick Inside of Me) and UK chart climbers like Waterfront and Speed Your Love to Me. Vocalist Jim Kerr delivers an amazing performance but sometimes the lyrics are a bit opaque. Charlie Burchill is a brilliant guitarist but you can't always make out what he's doing as Mick MacNeil's keyboards play a prominent role. The addition of Mel Gaynor from London gave them a big boost and the album hit #1 in New Zealand and the UK where it went platinum. But still, the US had limited knowledge of the band until the Breakfast Club hit a year later. So we go track x track to try to understand why the US didn't pick up on this one and if that had something to do with why they never became huge there like they did in Europe. This week we're talking about some of the GREAT producers, those geniuses who work magic in the studio. We mention Eddie Kramer, Giorgio Moroder, Steven Wilson, Bob Ezrin, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, Trevor Horn, Quincy Jones, Nile Rodgers, Martin Birch, Steve Lillywhite, and a plethora of others. And Stephanie Seymour shares her experiences of her band The Aquanettas working with different producers.  We know we couldn't possibly cover all the great producers, and we will likely do a Part 2 at some point (and a Part 3 -- listen to find out!). Marshall Crenshaw is a master of smart, instantly indelible guitar-pop-rock songs, starting with his outstanding 1982 self-titled debut album (“Someday, Someway,” “Cynical Girl,” “Mary Anne”…) and continuing with Field Day (“Whenever You're on My Mind”) and beyond. He grew up in the Detroit area, played John Lennon in productions of Beatlemania but always saw himself as a solo artist, not a band member. What about the first album's sound did he want to fix on the new remaster? Does he think Steve Lillywhite's booming production of Field Day gets a bad rap? Does he regret how the business side came to affect his creative work? How has he enjoyed guesting in the Smithereens? Will he ever record another album? This conversation will be more than your favorite waste of time.

It's hard to believe it's been 40 years since U2 released War in early 1983. Though U2 had been gaining ground on their first two albums Boy and October, it was War that set them on the path to superstardom. Buoyed by the big hits New Years Day and Sunday Bloody Sunday, U2 had really found their footing with the help of producer Steve Lillywhite. The Edge was creating amazing melodies and textures through his guitar and piano, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr. were honing themselves into a foundational and funky rhythm section while Bono was really finding his voice as a singer and songwriter. Though singing about war, love, inequality and things you don't always hear about on pop/rock records, U2 came across as earnest and steadfast in their beliefs. Thanks to MTV, the boys broke out big in American and sold more than 6 million copies. The 100+ date tour saw them go from playing clubs to playing arenas and some huge festivals. Though U2 would go on to have even bigger selling records, we always look back to this one as the real start of the juggernaut that win the hearts of American and the world. On this weeks episode, we dig into the second album by the Psychedelic Furs, Talk, Talk, Talk.  Starting as so many other young UK bands did in mid-1970s, the Psychedelic Furs got inspired after seeing the Sex Pistols. They met with almost immediate success, and were talked about n the same breadth as U2 as the next big thing. They even shared the same produce - famed British producer, Steve Lillywhite, who helped them refine their sound on their first two albums. While Talk, Talk, Talk was not their most successful album, it is widely adored by their fans and the press as the best expression of their post-punk, guitar-centric wall of sound.
