50 senior AEC leaders were interviewed about their AI strategies. Every one was bullish. Every one was optimising the same broken system. Not one was rethinking the operating model. Riccardo Cosentino welcomes Ali Mafi, an industry veteran whose career spans construction, automotive, and consultancy. Ali shares his journey from site engineer at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 4 to leading transformative project management practices at Balfour Beatty, where he introduced innovative methodologies like critical chain management and lean principles. Drawing comparisons with the automotive sector, Ali emphasizes how better project monitoring, bottleneck identification, and accountability can improve outcomes in construction."My definition of project management is knowing the impact of every task on the end date, every day. If you don't know that, you cannot manage the project. You're managing tasks, or you're managing resources, but you're not managing the project." – Ali MafiKey TakeawaysReshaping project management starts with daily monitoring of tasks driving the end date.Time is the largest cost in construction projects, yet it is often mismanaged or overlooked.Lessons from industries like automotive manufacturing highlight the value of lean principles and shorter feedback loops.Complexity and uncertainty are inevitable, but they can be mitigated by prioritizing work and adopting adaptive strategies.Links MentionedThe Goal by Eliyahu M Goldratt https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/113934.The_Goal If you enjoyed this episode, make sure and give us a five star rating and leave us a review on iTunes, Podcast Addict, Podchaser or Castbox. London's FTSE 100 has kicked off the day higher as the markets reacted positively to inflation increasing slower than analysts had expected. ONS data showed a 2.2% uptick in inflation in the year to July, the first acceleration in 2024 and rising from 2% in May and June respectively, but below expectations for a 2.3% increase. Analysts noted a lower-than-expected service inflation print, of 5.2% against analysts' 5.5%, which could spell good news for further Bank of England rate cuts this year. Meanwhile, Aviva shares have held flat after it unveiled a 14% increase in operating profit for the first half of the year. “Sales are up. Operating profit is up. The dividend is up. Our plan to deliver more for customers and shareholders is working really well,” said chief executive Amanda Blanc. Blanc highlighted that Aviva added 270,000 more customers year to date. Shares in FTSE 250 infrastructure group Balfour Beatty shifted lower despite it hiking its interim dividend after revenue and profit ticked up over the first half of the year. According to the group, the outlook for complex projects remains “encouraging,” despite a series of plans being scrapped under Britain's new Labour government. #ProactiveInvestors #marketreport #ftse #ftse100 #ftse250 #boe #inflation #cpi #aviva #amandablanc #balfourbeatty #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Welcome to this very special EXTRA episode of Building Women – our podcast that shines a light on senior women in the construction industry and their journeys and achievements in an environment that is still male dominated. In this special episode, which we recorded rather appropriately on International Women's Day, I had the privilege of interviewing not just one impressive woman in construction, but two: I sat down for a chat with the brilliant Terry Styant and Sophia Erfan, both Associate General Counsel at Balfour Beatty. Terri had a somewhat international upbringing but is now settled in Surrey with her husband and 'lockdown' cockapoo, Molly. Sophia lives in Hertfordshire with her husband and son. Both started out in private practice and both 'fell' into construction legal roles - today Terri is responsible for a team of 12 lawyers advising the business on operational matters ranging from ethics and governance to company secretarial work and Sophia manages a team of both lawyers and non-lawyers working on corporate matters which can range from ethics, compliance, dispute management and legal strategy and operations. They are a part of what the Legal 500s GC Powerlist calls a "trio of leaders".Perhaps unusually, Terri and Sophia are part of an almost all-female legal team at BB and, even more unusually they perpetuate the somewhat emerging trend in this podcast series of senior women in construction having only sisters as siblings! I am sure there must be something in that. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy our chat and that you have a couple of nuggets to take away that provoke some interesting thoughts and conversations within your own lives and careers.
The FTSE 100 enjoyed gains on Wednesday morning as ONS data showed the UK economy had returned to growth at the start of the year. GDP climbed by 0.2% in January, as construction output increased and the service sector grew, with the figures coming after the UK slipped into technical recession late last year. Among companies, Metro Bank reported its first pre-tax profit in five years in a mixed report, which also noted an increase in cost-cutting targets. Also reporting was Balfour Beatty, which soared after hiking dividend payments for the year and announcing a new buyback following stronger profits. And finally, British American Tobacco said it had gained around £1.5 billion from the sale of a portion of its stake in Indian conglomerate ITC, with this set to fund buybacks. #proactiveinvestors #marketreport #ftse #ftse100 #footsie #metrobank #balfourbeatty #britishamericantobacco #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

AFC Energy PLC (AIM:AFC, OTC:AFGYF) CEO Adam Bond tells Proactive's Stephen Gunnion that good progress has been made with its Speedy Hydrogen Solutions (SHS) joint venture with Speedy Hire. Bond said the collaboration has led to the company receiving its first commercial order valued at approximately £2 million for fuel cell generators. The company has successfully completed factory acceptance testing for 12 fuel cell stacks and is in the final stages of testing the generator as a whole. This process is critical to meeting contractual obligations with Speedy Hire. Additionally, he said AFC Energy has seen significant market interest, hosting tier-one construction groups, including a visit from Balfour Beatty, and engaging in discussions about potential projects. Internationally, AFC Energy has attracted attention, particularly from the Middle East, continuing to work with Saudi Arabian company Tamgo under an exclusive dealership agreement. Bond also discussed funding awarded under the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, earmarked for integrating its ammonia cracker technology with combustion engines in maritime applications. This novel approach aims to support the maritime industry's transition to cleaner energy sources. The company is working towards a feasibility study to demonstrate the integration of its ammonia cracker with a combustion engine, anticipated to conclude by year-end. #AFCenergy #FuelCellTechnology #CleanEnergy #HydrogenSolutions #MaritimeInnovation #AmmoniaCracking #SustainableEnergy #CleanMaritime #RenewableEnergy #GreenTech #ProactiveInvestors #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

STATE OF THE RECRUITER JOB MARKET, PT2 It has been a very challenging market. We did the pt1 of this mini series at the start of the year and we had hoped that things would improve for recruiters looking for work, but I don't think we can say that it has. The market buoyancy that we've experienced over the past decade and half might turn to be entirely a zero interest rate phenomenon, and we need to adjust to changed realties. Let's talk to recruiters who are at different stages of the job search - from recently looking, on the market for a while, to those successfully closed. We need to talk about what we're seeing, so that we can share learnings, connect and figure out how best to optimise for these suboptimal conditions. You will learn: - Market perspective from the job seekers - Germany, UK, USA, Ireland - What trends are discernible? - Salary / compensation - Status of remote - Language requirements - Applicant volume - Inbound opportunities...any at all? - Best practice / recommendations We're with Nikki Tarr, Head of TA (ex-ClearCourse), Tanguy Lacroix, Talent Acquisition Partner (ex-Qonto), Sofia Broberger, Recruitment Trainer (Freelance), Jon Hull, Head of Resourcing (ex-Balfour Beatty), Amanda-Jane Lamont, TA Leader (ex-Zalando) & Caroline Hunter, Recruitment & Talent Director (ex-Cielo) & friends. How many times have you been asked for feedback, to complete a survey or submit new ideas, and then hear nothing back? Plenty I'm sure. A surefire way to destroy engagement and lose great people is to ignore people when you've asked them to give you something more than just their time. If you are going to ask for ideas, you have to have a decent way of directing, collating, responding to and implementing them. It's easier than it sounds. What does feeling safe at work really mean? Being accepted for our ‘whole selves' is a central theme of ED&I. It's a given that when, as employees, we are provided the psychological safety to being our whole selves to work we are more productive, more creative and happier. We can also reveal our vulnerabilities and fears making us more rounded, understood and accessible to our colleagues. Sandi Wassmer is the Chief Executive of the Employer's Network for Equality and Inclusion or enei for short.Enei supports employers of all shapes and sizes from the Bank of England and Balfour Beatty to Primark and Pfizer, as they embark on their DE&I journey. In this interview, Sandi Wassmer also describes her own experience of surviving discrimination. She lost her sight in 2008 and suddenly the world saw her and treated her less favourably. However, she credits this devastating blow as giving her renewed energy and enthusiasm to campaign with even greater zeal for a fairer more inclusive and equal workplace. What is enei? [01:47]Sandi Wassmer introduces enei explaining that it's a membership organisation that supports members on their DE&I journey by offering services such as training and consultancy grounded in the Equality Act 2010 and beyond. Isn't DE&I just a box ticking exercise? [02:44]As Sandi says, organisations have to start somewhere and she's comfortable with that. Organisations are at different stages in their evolution and if enei can support organisations move from just compliance with the Equality Act to using it creatively to boost their business that's great. Is there a link between DE&I and employee wellbeing [07:02]Sandi states the link is absolute. Being able to bring your ‘whole self' to work because you are working in a psychologically safe space is critical to emotional wellbeing. What is psychological safety? [08:19]An environment without fear or discrimination is how Sandi describes it. Being able to be who you are and being open with your colleagues. What can organisations do to foster a sense of psychological safety [09:20]It's a leadership thing! Leaders as the top of the business set the culture. It's not about having policies and procedures. If DE&I is important to the leadership then it will be part of that organisations' culture. What is culture fit? [17:04]We discuss ‘culture fit' during the recruitment process and in particular the rejection of a candidate based upon ‘culture'. Sandi prefers to use the term ‘cultural contribution' which is grounded in diversity of thought and approach. She considers the term ‘fit' as an almost historical term. What drives Sandi's zeal for equality? [20:40]In 2008, Sandi Wassmer lost her sight and suddenly the world was a very different place. With such a major change, came a period of grief and anger that slowly moved to acceptance. This acceptance has led Sandi to discover as she describes the ‘person I always was inside'. She describes this as her ‘integrated self' – the same person inside and out.Resources:https://www.enei.org.ukhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/podcasthost/https://ovenreadyhr.comhttps://buddyboost.co.uk

Agreeing to take on those different job roles, responsibilities that took me away from what I was really passionate about. That built a career, that built an income, that served the organizations I was employed by and I'd always put that sense of responsibility ahead of freedom and growth.” -Mia O'Gorman [13:21] “If I'm leading myself, what's the small change I can make? and if I'm doing that well then I start to have earned respect and the capacity to lead other people.” -Mia O'Gorman [20:58] “People don't dare, necessarily, to open up about what's on their minds, what may be their concerns... to have someone who's holding up the mirror and then expresses it is really important and brings us to a completely different level of awareness."
