In this episode of Danny Hurst´s Unusual Histories Bridge Series, he reaches Kingston-Upon-Thames the location of two of the oldest bridges in London. As a bonus, he also tells you about a nearby bridge that is even older than the ones at Kingston. Danny reveals the connection the bridges have with salmon, witch trials, the incredibly violent traditional football matches, twin power stations, the oldest shipyard on the river, Braveheart and much more. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS Until Putney Bridge opened in 1729, Kingston was the only place to cross The Thames between Staines and London Bridge. The blue plaque on Kingston Bridge references one of the area's lost industries. The nearby Clattern Bridge is thought to be the oldest intact bridge in London. There has been a bridge in the area since Roman times. The original Kingston Bridge was made of cast iron. Kingston Upon Thames was where 7 Saxon kings were crowned, including one king that the locals mostly keep quiet about. Kingston was the first royal borough in England. The stone the bridge is made from is self-cleaning. BEST MOMENTS “The first power station closed in 1959 the second in 1980.” “The coronation stone stands outside the Guild Hall in Kingston and has a coin from the reign of each of those aforementioned 7 kings (crowned here).” “Clattern Bridge is thought to date back to around 1175 making it not only one of the oldest intact bridges in London, but also one of the oldest in England.” “While politicians filibustered (about replacing the bridge), nature intervened, and during a particularly intense frost in 1814 a whole section of the bridge collapsed.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.citybridgefoundation.org.uk Barnes Bridge episode - https://omny.fm/shows/unusual-histories/047-uh HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Booyakasha! It didn't seem that long ago that you couldn't walk 10 metres without someone doing an Ali G impression in your face, but it's over a quarter of a century since this cultural phenomenon of a character first graced our late-night Channel 4 screens as part of the anarchic topical comedy the 11 O' Clock Show. Originally a tool to poke the pomposity of politicians, religious figures, and artists, the boy from Staines became so much more, having his own spin-off shows, appearing in a Madonna music video, and eventually his own film in 2002.   In this episode, Guy and Rob talk all things Ali G and Sacha Baron Cohen, whilst being ever so careful to leave Borat and Bruno for a later date. Plus a mini dive into the 11 O'Clock Show and all the comedy talent that particularly divisive programme gave the world.   This may well also end up being the most represented film in our Spotify playlist, as the amount of Hip-Hop had Rob unable to contain his excitement, as did the line delivery of Charles Dance, but what was the overall impression of this film that left both our hosts relatively cold the first time around? This MBM conversation is with Nusrat Jafri, author of the memoir ‘This Land We Call Home'. In this book, Nusrat traces her maternal history going back to her great grand-father, who was originally part of the Bhantu tribe, and later adopted Christianity as a way to overcome the ostracisation imposed upon him and his family for belonging to what the British deemed as ‘criminal tribes'. Nusrat's book offers a window into the lives and choices of her grand aunts, who with the help of Christian missionaries' efforts got access to education and opportunities to become the first women to study in boarding schools, have varied career choices, travel abroad, marry or not by their own choices, and in effect become role models for her. She writes about her mother Meera, born in the year of India's independence, who also carved a path of her own, fell in love with a Muslim man, decided to convert to Islam, and effectively raised Nusrat and her siblings in a Muslim household. This conversation takes a deeper dive into Nusrat's years growing up in a cultural milieu where the term conversion was not a loaded one and where being a Muslim came with a space to ask questions to arrive at one's own answers. We talk about many layers of this Muslim identity, including gender, caste, class and how one carries their Muslimness in the world and country we find ourselves today. If you haven't listened to it already, you might want to listen to the first part of this before this one.* So today, I'm heading to Staines and to one of the local pubs of Hayley Pearce, shift brewer at Siren Craft Brew. Hayley's brewing career started with homebrewing with her Dad, before joining Fuller's as part of their graduate scheme and going through a number of different stations, training to run the big kit, helping commission and run the pilot kit at the brewery before joining Siren Craft Brew. We talk about the differences of what it's like working for a family brewer - "standing on the shoulder of the giants" of previous generations that have brewing at that since 1845 - versus at relatively small (although probably medium-sized) craft brewery founded 11 years ago that has a range spanning everything from West Coast to barley wines, braggots and everything in between. Along the way Hayley has - in her words - had to figure out her way of doing things in breweries that have often been built around men; with processes, tools and designs that haven't changed much in generations. Hayley's been a proponent for opening doors and removing obstacles to help open brewing up to more people that might otherwise be put off.We talk about keeping fermenters warm with ski jackets, the ballet performance of getting large malt sacks into the mill with a wheelbarrow and the different languages of brewing that are spoken at different breweries by different people. The biggest off-season in Wests Tigers history has continued with the departure of the club's longest-serving player. David Nofoaluma played 192 games for the club over a decade, but earlier this week he accepted a sizeable payout to walk away from the final two years of his contract. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast we take a look at the Wests Tigers career of the man called 'Nofa' and discuss why things went south for him. The move has also opened up a couple of interesting situations that we also discuss. Firstly, who are now most likely our two starting wingers in 2024? Will it be Staines and Tupou? Or, are there other options Benji Marshall is considering? Secondly, what do we do with the vacant roster spot? Is it best to hold on to the spot and see where we might need strengthening mid-season? Or, do we go to market now? Another topic for discussion is just the enormous amount of change that has occurred in recent months with a long list of departures including Pascoe, Hagipantelis, Fulton, Sheens, Brooks, and now Nofoaluma. You're the best.   Yes.   Yes, we are).   Beginning rowing while at The University of Durham, Dr. Cannon went on to row, coach, and captain, helping out at college and university level before going on to teach and coach at schools level before moving on to row at and for Staines, Eton Excelsior, Maidenhead and Vesta.   One of nature's natural organisers and administrators, Michael's journey through the sport has taken in the side of the sport without which we wouldn't have a sport: the running and administering and organising of clubs, squads, boats, fleets, heads and regattas.   And while this all might sound about as fun as watching paint dry, not only wouldn't we have a sport without the Dr. Cannons of this world, but it (and a quick look at the books on offer at Companies House) raised the question:   What happens when clubs start raising their ambition levels above the levels of their resources? (Or to put it more bluntly, what is UK rowing's current obsession with making Henley Royal Regatta costing clubs?) We talk about the costs of running and maintaining clubs, membership levels and running a fleet. We discuss the perception of what a 'club' is supposed to provide and offer to its members, talk about how some clubs have gamed that and the current system to provide 'successful' programmes, look at what 'success' might mean, and what that means for the UK-wide representation within the sport. And we look at the impact of 'professionalism' on a volunteer-run and led sport, before addressing the realities of member turnover in metropolitan areas, and how cost-of-living / housing / work changes over time has impacted the sport as a whole.   Yeah.   We are the original and best.   But that's because our guests are.   Get some!   Bow Four! Provide a sunk-cost analysis by the end of this piece, or swim home.   -----   Enjoyed this episode?   Buy us a coffee, download a training plan, and support us so we can carry on making Broken Oars Podcast, the best rowing podcast in the world.   https://www.buymeacoffee.com/brokenoarsd   Thank You!   Follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/brokenoarspodc1   Follow us on Instagram: www.instagram.com/thelandingstage/                                           www.instagram.com/brokenoarsindoors/   Read more Broken Oars: www.thelandingstage.net

Alecia Staines is a passionate advocate for improving the maternity care system and has been working in this space of political advocacy for a decade. She is also a classroom teacher, childbirth educator, yoga teacher, founder of Maternal Consumer Network, and mother of 5. In this conversation Alecia provides an overview of some of the key problems she sees within the maternity system, how she works both within the system and outside of it, in order to advocate for institutional change. Alecia is active in working to address structural inadequacies, as well in supporting individuals through education, trauma-informed practices, and more. We talk frankly about the challenges in initiating structural and social change, and I ask for Alecia's insights as to how she's navigated these challenges and sustained herself over the course of her career and volunteer work. Alecia reflects on the bureaucratic obstacles that exist in the maternity system, the prevalence of birth and obstetric violence, the importance of respectful communication within healthcare, and the foundational role that birth plays in ‘setting us up' for motherhood. We talk about the ripple effects of birth trauma on relationships and society and discuss healing, the power of story-telling, vagal toning, social power dynamics, paternalism, hierarchies, and the need for reform. . . . Rima Staines is an artist whose work straddles myth, magical realism, and the folk arts. She works predominantly as a painter, but also with music, writing, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, theatre, puppetry, animation, and book arts. In 2018 she was a finalist in the 'Best Artist' category of the World Fantasy awards. Rima has a long-held fascination with the idea of the liminal — that which lies at the edge of culture and society as well as the literal boundaries between one place and another, both metaphorical and real — and with the power of art that comes from that liminal place. I have Rima's “The Old Song” and “Maiden, Mother, Crone” paintings hanging above my desk, they offer me daily inspiration. In this episode, Rima and I discuss: - Rima's creative process and where she draws creative inspiration from - Art as alchemy  - The weaving of many art mediums and Rima's experience with not only fine art and painting, but also bookbinding, publishing, puppetry, and music - Mothering and what it has taught and is teaching Rima - How Rima balances motherhood and art making - The grief of mothering without a village - Living with epilepsy and what it has taught and is teaching Rima I cannot encourage you enough to look at (and purchase!) Rima's incredible paintings, they are so unique and speak deeply to the liminal spaces of life. The Ghost Ship by Richard Barham MiddletonRichard Barham Middleton was born in 1882 in Staines then in Middlesex, but since 1965 part of Surrey. It calls itself Staines upon Thames now.  I checked the 1864 map and then it was a small town surrounded by fields and woods. Even now looking at the satellite, though I see is is a much bigger urbanisation there is still some nice green land around it. But I digress. He died in 1911 in Brussels by suicide (If You Appreciate The Work I've Put In Here - You could buy me a coffee at https://ko-fi.com/tonywalker or join as a Patron for exclusive content here: https://www.patreon.com/barcud)He was educated at Cranbrook school and then went to work as a bank clerk between 1901 and 1907 but lived, the Wiki says ‘affected' a Bohemian lifestyle at night and joined a club called The New Bohemians. He knew Arthur Machen who much admired his work and wrote a preface to the collection of stories in which I found The Ghost Ship. It's available on Gutenberg for free. He became a magazine editor but really wanted to be a poet. He met Raymond Chandler who was put off writing almost because Middleton was so talented and he thought he'd never match it. His most famous poem is The Bathing Boy which is a paean to a beautiful young man swimming. He made very little money as a writer and lived in poverty. He moved to Brussels and aged only 29, he killed himself by drinking chloroform just after his birthday. We have done his winter ghost story, On Brighton Road which is short but good. The Ghost Ship is his most famous ghost story and, unlike On Brighton Road is humorous.  In his biography by Henry Savage, Middleton is said to have claimed he had a pirate for an ancestor who was hanged at Port Royal. But Savage notes that Middleton was not diligent with facts.
