Spiritual Stewardship: The Duty to Future Generations

We're the architects of a future we'll never inhabit. In the face of today's global challenges, we must consider how our actions set the stage for those who will inherit the Earth after us. Are we obligated to act now for people we'll never meet? Do future generations even have rights? In today's episode, we discuss the spiritual implications of "now vs. later" — how short-term desires clash with long-term responsibilities. From environmental conservation to preserving cultural and moral values, we explore what it really means to leave behind a legacy. Does spirituality demand that we leave footprints in the sand, or seeds in the soil for a forest we'll never see? Throughout history, certain societies have embraced long-term thinking, while others have been crumbled by short-term gains. From Indigenous practices of sustainability to modern roles like the Future Generations Commissioner of Wales, long-term stewardship has always been a guiding principle. But it's becoming rarer in today's fast-paced world — just look at the instant gratification of consumerism or political leaders who make decisions solely based on election cycles. What is the price of constantly living for the present, and how does it stunt our collective growth? Can we design systems and cultures that help us rise above short-term thinking, even in the face of an immediate crisis?Even beliefs like reincarnation, which promise a second chance, can lead us to focus on personal ‘good karma' rather than the welfare of future generations. What does it truly mean to be a "good ancestor" when we're preoccupied with our own spiritual returns? We also cover some common spiritual practices, like meditation and manifestation, explaining which ones foster a mindset of sustainability and which may unintentionally encourage short-term thinking. Stewarding the future carries a heavy weight, both spiritually and emotionally. But the truth is that you are both an echo of the past and a whisper for the future. What kind of sound will your life make? *****************************************"Like the earth, let us help and share the burden of all. Like the water, let us flow untethered and quench the deepest thirst. Like fire, let us eliminate the unnecessary and unimportant. Like air, let us silently become a lifeline for all.”— Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee (from the book "Spiritual Ecology: The Cry of the Earth")*****************************************Episode Resources:Book: "The Long View: Why We Need To Transform How the World Sees Time" by Richard FisherBook: "The Clock of the Long Now: Time and Responsibility" by Stewart BrandBook: "Longpath: Becoming the Great Ancestors Our Future Needs" by Ari WallachBook: "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fall or Succeed" by Jared DiamondBook: “Spiritual Ecology: The Cry of the Earth” by Llewellyn Vaughan-LeeBook: “The Ascent of Man” by Jacob BronowskiBook: “The Ethics of the Climate Crisis” by Robin AttfieldBook: “A Theory of Justice” by John RawlsBook: "The Discoverers: A History of Man's Search to Know His World and Himself" by Daniel J. #Nihilism is the point of view, or philosophy, antithetical to the reputedly meaningful aspects of life. Most commonly, nihilism is presented in the form of existential nihilism, which argues that life is without objective meaning, purpose, or intrinsic value. Moral nihilists assert that morality does not exist at all. Wikipedia What is positive nihilism? Positive Nihilism is the result of a lifetime of reading Being and Time and offers a series of reflections that are aphoristic, poetic, and (appropriately, considering his object of study) difficult. Existential nihilism is the philosophical theory that life has no intrinsic meaning or value. With respect to the universe, existential nihilism suggests that a single human or even the entire human species is insignificant, without purpose and unlikely to change in the totality of existence. noun the rejection of all religious and moral principles, in the belief that life is meaningless. Similar: negativity cynicism pessimism rejection repudiation renunciation denial abnegation disbelief non-belief unbelief scepticism lack of conviction absence of moral values agnosticism atheism non-theism PHILOSOPHY the belief that nothing in the world has a real existence. HISTORICAL the doctrine of an extreme Russian revolutionary party c. 1900 which found nothing to approve of in the established social order. What is the difference between nihilism and existentialism? Existentialism, is a view on coping with the world, and is primarily epistemological. Nihilism is a view of reality, in so far as it affects humans of all kinds. Absurdism, is a further extension of nihilism, that relates to the humans quest for understanding and meaning. #emotionalnihilism What is a nihilist person? Nihilism is the belief that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated. It is often associated with extreme pessimism and a radical skepticism that condemns existence. A true nihilist would believe in nothing, have no loyalties, and no purpose other than, perhaps, an impulse to destroy. Existential nihilism is the philosophical theory that life has no intrinsic meaning or value. With respect to the universe, existential nihilism suggests that a single human or even the entire human species is insignificant, without purpose and unlikely to change in the totality of existence. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vegansteven/message

This episode is joined by our old friend, Santu, who earned his philosophy Ph.D. at Columbia University and now a J.D candidate at Yale University, and our new friend, Mr. Qian, who's also pursuing his degree at Yale University. In this episode, we recap the previous seasons of BoJack Horseman and raise questions such as why this Netflix show resonates with so many Chinese viewers, and to what extent, it reflects the exhausting reality in urban China? Aside from "Philosophy 101" content, the host Diaodiao mentioned "sang culture," a trendy lifestyle in China celebrating the acceptance of bleak perspectives. Why is that? Are we the Sisyphus who are trapped by the repeating norms that have no meanings? What is BoJack Horseman trying to tell us? Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/loudmurmurs)

In this episode, we're going to delve into H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulu Mythos featuring the Outer Gods. Cosmic Horror is an important sub-genre of Horror, which can also be defined as Lovecraftian Horror, Eldritch Horror, or Cosmicism. Cosmic Horror is heavily influenced by the philosophy of Existential Nihilism, and Philosophical Pessimism, with a consistent theme of madness to those who view what their minds aren't ready to comprehend. In Lovecraft's mythos universe human beings are entirely insignificant and inconsequential on a cosmic scale. With countless civilizations throughout the universe coming and going in meaningless existences under the watchful eyes of entities so ancient and powerful we humans seem less than ants to them in comparison. Lovecraft's writings would spark an obsession that is still very prominent till this day, and Tim will go into detail of the most powerful of these Lovecraftian horrors, the Outer Gods. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the madness. "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown." - H.P. Lovecraft

So, here we are, witnessing the last futile gasping breaths of a culture that arrogantly left God.  The play of prideful speech and moral turpitude had a moment of excitement, but the flash of excitement has now wained.  These will be no Exit or heroic End Game for the west.  The west may have believed that it could determine the course of history with sinful glee, but that too has passed.  There will be no Funeral for the Great Myth because militant atheism and carping gutlessness are the new idolatries.  Jesus is still saving the lost ones today.  Now is the accepted time, now is the day of savlation.
