Down Home Cajun Music- Khoury's 700 SeriesThis episode documents the final Cajun recordings on George Khoury's Khoury's label. The Khoury's label began in 1950 and lasted into the 1960's. The 700 series is basically 45 rpm releases beginning with Nathan Abshire's 701 in 1957. Khoury released 6 Cajun records on the 700 series as listed below. But by 1960's, he reissued several of his old 78 rpm recordings on 45 rpm. I've included two examples of those. To me, these are some of the greatest examples of Cajun music in the late 1950's. By the late 1950's the studios improved their sound and the pressings improved. This would lead to other labels releasing great Cajun music in the late 1950's into the 1960's. But Khoury's musical legacy is filled with absolute great music.Nathan Abshire & His Pine Grove Boys- "Crying Pine Grove Blues" (Khoury's 701A) 1957Nathan Abshire & His Pine Grove Boys- "LSU French Waltz" (Khoury's 701B) 1957Cleveland Crochet & His Hillbilly Ramblers- "Sha Meon Waltz" (Khoury's 702A) 1957Cleveland Crochet & His Hillbilly Ramblers- "Midnight Blues" (Khoury's 702B) 1957Nathan Abshire & His Pine Grove Boys- "Cannonball Special" (Khoury's 704A) 1958Nathan Abshire & His Pine Grove Boys- "Red Rock Waltz" (Khoury's 704B) 1958Pee Wee Broussard & The Melody Boys- "Perradin Twoster" (Khoury's 709A) 1959Pee Wee Broussard & The Melody Boys- "Jolie Te Blun" (Khoury's 709B) 1959Blackie Fruge & The Moonlight Serenaders- "Elton Two Step" (Khoury's 725B) 1959Blackie Fruge & The Moonlight Serenaders- "La Robe Barre" (Khoury's 725A) 1959)Pee Wee Broussard & The Melody Boys- "New Iberia Stomp" (Khoury's 725A) 1960Pee Wee Broussard & The Melody Boys- "La Valse De Bon Amies" (Khoury's 725B) 1960Lawrence Walker & His Wandering Aces- "Evangeline Waltz" (Khoury's 615A) 1951 (45 rpm repress) 1960Lawrence Walker & His Wandering Aces- "Johnny Can't Dance" (Khoury's 615B) 1951 (45 rpm repress) 1960 Nathan Abshire & His Musical Five- "La Waltz A Belezere" (Khoury's 610A)(45 rpm repress) 1960Nathan Abshire & His Musical Five- " "Choupique Two Step" (Khoury's 610B)(45 rpm repress) 1960

Down Home Cajun Music- Lache PasOn this episode of the podcast, we mix it up a bit. Sometimes it is forgotten how much great music came from South Louisiana from the 1950's and the 1960's. From label owners like Dago Redlich, J.D. Miller, Carol Rachou, George Khoury and Eddie Shuler, there was a flood of dynamic music coming from local artists, We've got almost a hour's worth of music recorded in South Louisiana; all from the original 45 rpm records.Johnnie Allan- South To Louisiana (Viking 1015)Slim Harpo- I'm A King Bee (Excello 2113)Rod Bernard- Colinda (Hall-Way 1902)Cookie and his Cupcakes- Got You On My Mind (Lyric 1004)Rocket Morgan- You're Humbuggin Me (Zynn 502)Belton Richard- Snoozin' (Chamo 102)Bill & Carroll- My Blue Letter (Goldband 1034)Clarence Garlow- Bon Ton Roula (JBJ 1038)Lawrence Walker- Lena Mae (La Lou 8025)Randy & The Rockets- Let's Do The Cajun Twist (Jin 161)Little Alfred- Walking Down The Aisle (Lyric 1016)Jo El Sonnier & Robert Bertrand- Memphis (Fais Do Do 1003)Terry Clement & Nathan Abshire- French Blues (Zynn 117)Warren Storm- Prisoner Song (Nasco 6015)Cleveland Crochet- Midnight Blues (Lyric 1001)Cookie & His Cupcakes- Mathilda (Lyric 1003)Slim Harpo- Rainin In My Heart (Excello 2194)Shorty LeBlanc- Kaw-Liga (Goldband 1128)Blackie & The Moonlight Serenaders- Elton Two Step (Khoury's 725)*All selections from the original 45 rpm records
Down Home Cajun Music- Khoury's RecordingsThis week's podcast focuses on Khoury's record's label. George Khoury was a Turkish-American businessman from Lake Charles and record store owner. In 1947, he noticed a lack of Cajun music being recorded in south Louisiana and decided to open a business to compete with Ed Shuler's Goldband Records and J. D. Miller's Fais-Do-Do and Feature labels. His base of operations was just around the corner from Ed's on Railroad Ave in Lake Charles. Khoury decided to create two labels simultaneously, Lyric and Khoury's, in 1950. The label had such artists as Lawrence Walker, Nathan Abshire, Dewey Balfa, Maurice Barzas, Will Kegley, Atlas Fruge and Crawford Vincent to name a few. Khoury continued the label into the 1960's, creating a musical history rich of influential Cajun music. Lawrence Walker- "Country Waltz" (Khoury's 601)Amar Devllier- "Shoe Pick Waltz" (Lyric 1-A)Lawrence Walker- "Tu Le Du Po La Mam" (Khoury's 607)Jimmy Choates- "Belle Isle Waltz" (Khoury's 608)Nathan Abshire- "La Waltz A Belezere" (Lyric 610)Nathan Abshire- "Pine Grove Blues No. 2" (Khoury's 611)Lawrence Walker- "Evangeline Waltz" (Khoury's 615)Elise Deshotel- "Le Two Step De Ville Platte" (Khoury's 618)Elise Deshotel- "La Valse De Tamper Tate" (Khoury's 620)Shuk Richard- "Le Cote Farouche De La Vic" (Khoury's 621)Shuk Richard- "Madam Entelle Two Step" (Khoury's 622)Lawrence Walker- "Reno Waltz" (Khoury's 623)Amar Devillier- "Durald Two Step" (Lyric 1-B)Nathan Abshire- "Musical Five Special" (Khoury's 631)Nathan Abshire- "Point De Lou" (Khoury's 645)Little Yvonne LeBlanc- "Mama Rosin" (Khoury's 652)*All selections from the original 78 rpm records.
Down Home Cajun Music- Independent Cajun Labels on 45 rpm: Volume OneThis episode focuses on some of the releases from smaller, independent labels to come out of south Louisiana from 1950's to the 1980's. With the recording advancements of the time, many of these smaller labels started recording many local artists. Some of these records were put out by the artists themselves; bypassing a recording contract or studio fees and selling them their selves. Many of these labels aren't as well known as some of their contemporaries of the time such as Swallow and Goldband; but the music was equally as exciting.1.Country Cajuns- Country Cajuns Waltz (Marie 001)2.Addie Guillory- Pitre Ford Two Step (Pitre Ford 101)3.Jesse Lege- Memories In My Heart (Circle D 1008)4.Charlie Broussard- My Little Girl (Cora B 002)5.Dalton Alleman- Alleman Waltz (Belle 101)6.Dillard Duplechin- Oberlin Two Step (Big D 1000)7.Rufus Thibodeaux- Jolie Blonde (Tribute 1000)8.Adam Hebert- Bring Her Back Waltz (Cajun 500)9.Jimmie Choates- Farewell Waltz (O'Day 108)10.Milfred Simon- Mermentau Bridge Special (Circle D 1004)11.Balfa Brothers & Bill Keith- Hicks Wagon Wheel Special (Rocky Road Records 4504)*All Selections from the original 45 rpm recordsNotes on the recordings:1. The Marie label was started by Ed Credeur and featured Issac Leger and the Country Cajuns. This one record seems to be the only release on the label. Recorded in 1975.2. We know of other releases on the Pitre Ford label, but they are not as good as this one. I haven't found any info on Addie Guillory. These Pitre Ford releases seem to be promotional items for the Pitre Ford dealership out of Eunice. This release by Addie Guillory and the Grand Prairie Playboys was recorded sometime in the 1960's.3. Ed Credeur shows up again this time as part of Jesse Lege's Jeff Davis Ramblers. Circle D Records was one of the many labels to come out of Jennings and was ran by Clinton "C.E" Diehl. Recorded in 1987.4. Charlie Broussard recorded one record in the late 40's on the Opera label and didn't show back up on record till 1980's. He recorded two records for the Cora B label then.5. Dalton Alleman recorded this track at his home in the 1960's with Shorty Sonnier. While the Belle label is a mystery; we know La Louisianne helped get the record pressed.6. The Big D label was ran by Richard Duplechian out of Lake Charles. Dillard Duplechian and his Louisiana Travelers recorded 3 records for the label in the mid 1960's. For the recordings, they used Goldband Studio.7. While Rufus Thibodeaux had recorded a album with songs of Harry Choates in the 1970's; this 45 on the Tribute label seems to be the work of JD Miller as it bears his Jamil publishing name on it.8. Adam Hebert recorded two Cajun 500 releases in the late 50's. This 45 was recorded at JD Millers studio and put out by Adam.9. Jimmie Choates was a cousin to Harry. Jimmie recorded for JD Miller, George Khoury and Eddie Shuler from 1948 until the mid 60's. He recorded this track on the O'Day label in 1967.10. Milfred Simon recorded this track on the Circle D label in the 1970's and features Blackie Fruge on fiddle.11. This Balfa Brothers track was recorded in late 1970's and features Bill Keith on banjo and Nathan Abshire on accordion. As for the Rocky Road label almost nothing is known.
Down Home Cajun Music- The Sugar BeesCleveland Crochet first recorded as The Hillbilly Ramblers in 1954, recording for Eddie Shuler's Folk Star label. This group was different than the later line up with the exception that Charlie Babineaux was on guitar. It wasn't until 1957 when Cleveland got the lineup right when he recorded for George Khoury's Lyric and Khoury's label. Joining him this time was Vorris "Shorty" LeBlanc on accordion, Jay Stutes on steel guitar, Charlie on guitar and Clifton Newman on drums. In 1960 they recorded "Sugar Bee" for the Goldband label and soon changed their name to "The Sugar Bees". The group recorded for Goldband until 1963 and sometimes used other musicians such as Rufus Thibodeaux, Abe Manuel and Benny Martin among others. The group split up in 1965 when Shorty LeBlanc passed away.Deedle-E-Deedle-D-Da (Folk-Star 1191) 1954 * As the Hillbilly RamblersBig Boy Waltz (Folk-Star 1191) 1954 * As the Hillbilly RamblersSha Meon Waltz (Lyric 1001) 1957 * As the Hillbilly RamblersMidnight Blues (Lyric 1001) 1957 * As the Hillbilly RamblersSugar Bee (Goldband 1106)Sweet Thing (Goldband 1114) 1961Hound Dog Baby (Goldband 1114) 1961Coming Home (Goldband 1134) 1962Boss Cajun (Goldband 1139) 1962My Little Cabbage (Goldband 1147) 1962Don't Get Married (Goldband 1147) 1962Kaw-liga (Goldband 1128) 1962Waltz of Mulberry Limb (Goldband 7749) 1963unknown tune. Thanks to Jared M for use of his Folk-Star 1191.*All selections from the original 78 and 45 rpm recordsAlso available on Apple Podcasts.

Here is Nathan's entire output on Khoury's Records in order, from the original 78 rpm and 45 rpm records. Nathan recorded for George Khoury's label from 1951 to 1958 issuing some monumental recordings for the label. For the 51-53 sessions, radio stations were used to record the songs. This episode originally aired August 16th, 2016. With the August 24th release of Twomorrows' newest comics book "Comic Book Fever", Greg got a chance to chat with writer George Khoury about this love letter to the comics and comics culture of his youth. From his survey of British art talent in “True Brit”, to his benchmark work untangling the Miracleman legacy and legal history in “Kimota! The Miracleman Companion”, to his extensive interview and contextualization of one of comics' greatest creators in “The Extraordinary Works of Alan Moore”, Khoury has proven himself as one of the pillars of the Twomorrows publishing line and a must-read when it comes to understanding and celebrating the medium we all enjoy. Nowhere is that combination more evident than in "Fever”. Celebrating the last decade of the Bronze Age, “Fever” touches on so many aspects of comics and comics culture from 1976 to 1986, that if you were a comics fan from that era and DIDN'T see something you recognized and remembered fondly...maybe you weren't actually a fan. He and Greg talk about not only his books, but also which DC artist was a spitting image of Mean Streets-era Martin Scorsese, how likely we are to see an updated volume of "Kimota!", why people shouldn't be surprised when poking the bear doesn't put the bear in the best mood, and more on this laidback, free-wheeling episode! Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. You can subscribe to it via iTunes or through the RSS feed at RobotsFromTomorrow.com. You can also follow Mike and Greg on Twitter. This episode is brought to you by Third Eye Comics. Enjoy your funny books.
