Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Singer, guitarist, jug-band pioneer and songster Jim Kweskin joins me on the show today. I can't tell you how many times I heard Jim's name before I ever heard his music. To the generation before me, he was a total legend, and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band was very influential to many musicians who grew up in the 60's and 70's. Jim came up in the Boston/Cambridge area and The Jug Band was legendary around those parts and eventually across America. Old blues, jug and string band music was considered old fashioned at that point in time, and Jim spearheaded its return and kicked off a musical revolution that inspried bands like the Lovon' Spoonful and The Grateful Dead (don't forget they started off as a jug band too). With bandmates like Geoff and Maria Muldaur, Bill Keith, Mel Lyman and Fritz Richmond, the Jug Band was signed to a major label, sold thousands of records and toured across the country tirelessly between 1963-1970. They turned countless young musicians on to the music of artists like Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Boy Fuller and the Mississippi Sheiks.Jim has continued making records and performing under his own name and has just put out a rerally cool album called “Never Too Late”, which is mostly duets with some of his friends on vocals like Maria Muldaur, Meredith Axelrod and many more.I won't go too in depth on his bio here because in the interview, he actually had a bio preopared and read it to me, which you'll hear on the show. It's a first “written statement” for the podcast! I think you'll dig that part of the conversation. We live in the age of information. Today you can go online, search for how to play banjos in the style of the Northwest or in North Carolina, and learn it. Traditionally, you had to physically find the people playing and spend some time with them to learn, but not anymore. However, with so much information, it's easy to lose sight of the artists. So make sure you find the people who are actually playing and ensure whatever self-education you're doing is supplemented with actual relationships. There is so much that can be transmitted through the relationship that cannot be transmitted in any other way. In this episode, Max Wareham, a banjo player, shares his journey in music and the lessons he has learned in his mastery process. Your dream in music, banjo, or guitar mastery is valuable, and it's worth spending the time to make it happen.“It's easy to lose sight, but it all comes back to the people and relationships.”Snapshot of the Key Points from the Episode:[02:34] Max shares how he got started and where he is today. Much of his work in bluegrass and education is focused on early bluegrass banjo styles and how they can offer alternative paths to expression within the bluegrass idiom.Resources Mentioned -Rudy Lyle: The Unsung Hero of the Five-String Banjo: https://www.maxwareham.com/product-page/rudy-lyle-the-unsung-hero-of-the-five-string-banjoHow to connect with Max Wareham:Websites: https://www.maxwareham.com/ https://maxwareham.bandcamp.com/Listen to Max's music at: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/max-wareham/1290349278 / https://open.spotify.com/artist/30LXom98tWrl14BKI1xNUIAbout the Host -Belinda Ellsworth is a Speaker, Trainer, Best-Selling Author, and PodcasterShe has been a professional speaker, mover, and shaker for more than 25 years. Down Home Cajun Music- Independent Cajun Labels on 45 rpm: Volume OneThis episode focuses on some of the releases from smaller, independent labels to come out of south Louisiana from 1950's to the 1980's. With the recording advancements of the time, many of these smaller labels started recording many local artists. Some of these records were put out by the artists themselves; bypassing a recording contract or studio fees and selling them their selves. Many of these labels aren't as well known as some of their contemporaries of the time such as Swallow and Goldband; but the music was equally as exciting.1.Country Cajuns- Country Cajuns Waltz (Marie 001)2.Addie Guillory- Pitre Ford Two Step (Pitre Ford 101)3.Jesse Lege- Memories In My Heart (Circle D 1008)4.Charlie Broussard- My Little Girl (Cora B 002)5.Dalton Alleman- Alleman Waltz (Belle 101)6.Dillard Duplechin- Oberlin Two Step (Big D 1000)7.Rufus Thibodeaux- Jolie Blonde (Tribute 1000)8.Adam Hebert- Bring Her Back Waltz (Cajun 500)9.Jimmie Choates- Farewell Waltz (O'Day 108)10.Milfred Simon- Mermentau Bridge Special (Circle D 1004)11.Balfa Brothers & Bill Keith- Hicks Wagon Wheel Special (Rocky Road Records 4504)*All Selections from the original 45 rpm recordsNotes on the recordings:1. The Marie label was started by Ed Credeur and featured Issac Leger and the Country Cajuns. This one record seems to be the only release on the label. Recorded in 1975.2. We know of other releases on the Pitre Ford label, but they are not as good as this one. I haven't found any info on Addie Guillory. These Pitre Ford releases seem to be promotional items for the Pitre Ford dealership out of Eunice. This release by Addie Guillory and the Grand Prairie Playboys was recorded sometime in the 1960's.3. Ed Credeur shows up again this time as part of Jesse Lege's Jeff Davis Ramblers. Circle D Records was one of the many labels to come out of Jennings and was ran by Clinton "C.E" Diehl. Recorded in 1987.4. Charlie Broussard recorded one record in the late 40's on the Opera label and didn't show back up on record till 1980's. He recorded two records for the Cora B label then.5. Dalton Alleman recorded this track at his home in the 1960's with Shorty Sonnier. While the Belle label is a mystery; we know La Louisianne helped get the record pressed.6. The Big D label was ran by Richard Duplechian out of Lake Charles. Dillard Duplechian and his Louisiana Travelers recorded 3 records for the label in the mid 1960's. For the recordings, they used Goldband Studio.7. While Rufus Thibodeaux had recorded a album with songs of Harry Choates in the 1970's; this 45 on the Tribute label seems to be the work of JD Miller as it bears his Jamil publishing name on it.8. Adam Hebert recorded two Cajun 500 releases in the late 50's. This 45 was recorded at JD Millers studio and put out by Adam.9. Jimmie Choates was a cousin to Harry. Jimmie recorded for JD Miller, George Khoury and Eddie Shuler from 1948 until the mid 60's. He recorded this track on the O'Day label in 1967.10. Milfred Simon recorded this track on the Circle D label in the 1970's and features Blackie Fruge on fiddle.11. This Balfa Brothers track was recorded in late 1970's and features Bill Keith on banjo and Nathan Abshire on accordion. As for the Rocky Road label almost nothing is known.

Bill Keith is CEO and Co-Founder of Perfect Snacks.   You can say Bill Keith was a “born leader” as he is the eldest of 13 children, and they became known as the family that founded Perfect Bar.  Perfect Bar is the #1-Selling Refrigerated Protein Bar in the U.S. and is available in 27,000 retailers nationwide. Bill's quest to create Perfect Bar began in college, when he submitted a business plan for a class project, outlining his concept for a first-of-its-kind refrigerated protein bar made with whole food ingredients — a concept hatched from a childhood recipe, created by his father.  Over the next 13 years, Bill and his younger siblings worked tirelessly to turn the crowded, $6-billion protein bar industry upside down, leading consumers away from the highly-processed, non-perishable snack aisles, to the fresh and functional snack and beverage coolers where Perfect Snacks products continue to carve out desirable, high-velocity fridge real estate. Last time I spoke with my guest he hipped me to Herbie Nicholas, Village Music and the album Bass Ball which I still haven't found. Since that time I Have been Woodshedding in many different regions of the country. Talking to Charlie Daniels about his bluegrass upbringings in Appalachia, or maybe Bill Keith who is a master of the banjo. It Could have been talking with Peter Rowan before a concert I promoted for him in Sahuarita where he talked about why the outlaws migrated from Texas to Stinson Beach. Dawg Music is dawg grass, dawg jazz, fluid improvisational melodic invention it's not a bastion of hard bop like Horace Silver or Art Blakey but it has the swing element thanks to the drumming of George Marsh at City Winery not the Jabberwocky, where Richard Greene almost dislodged Herb Pedersons eye ball with an up bow. My guest has forged relationships with so many artists from so many spectrums that there is no label to define his music. Acousticity is a big part of it, the plucking of the strings playing a Milt Jackson tune or Klezmer music with Hal Blaine at the Tucson Jewish Community Center. That lifestyle catches up with some, the road can eat you up so you have to constantly retool, reinvent and look towards the light. He's a grandfather now with incentive to teach his grand kids about good rhythm, good syncopation and letting the music breath. When he was winning the Union Grove Fiddlers Convention in 1964 the original masters of bluegrass were still thriving Father Bill, Vassar, Chubby, Lamar, Tex. The same way it was in jazz with Dizzy and Duke, Trane and Miles, the same in soul with Ray Charles and Sam Cooke. Those cats have long since left the bandstand and the baton has been handed off to people like my guest. He knows he is a link in the chain for future generations of musicians and music enthusiasts. He thumbed his nose at the record business and has made a living playing music that is true to him with the trusty Bob Schumaker at the helm @ 1750 Arch Records. My guest today is the greatest banjo player the world has ever seen. That could be because of the advent of air travel but probably not. He was born in Boston, MA a city rich with history and prose and fiddling. This breadbasket of culture lent itself to my guest who was bubbling with an urge to play burning music- bluegrass music. From the Ash Grove Fiddlers Convention to Farms in Appalachia my guest found himself playing with the father of bluegrass Bill Monroe. In time he recognized Monroe's expectation that he develop his own sound on the banjo, be inventive, lead don't follow, I'll take A Melody. Which is what my guest did developing a style of playing that focused on the melody. Chromatic hits that required listening to his bandmates, taking chances and learning how to improvise melodically. Just like Ed Cassady and the Georgia Corn Stompers or Earl Skruggs or Bill Emerson. With this new style of banjo playing Keith joined Muleskinner with a bunch of pranksters including Richard Greene, David Grisman, Peter Rowan and the late great Clarence White- another inventor. My guest played in road worthy bands and was an in demand session player on both banjo and pedal steel. Might be Ian and Sylvia or a little Pottery Pie with Geoff Muldaur, relaxin his mind with Jim Rooney or playing on the back porch with Tony Trishka. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Do you know what SRP stands for, it's an acronym for a very sterile system of learning that leads to followers, copy cating, no individuality.....in music SRP stands for Standard Recording Procedure. The way of confining musicians to make music they don't want to create. The ties that bind, the money the 3 record companies remaining in this land.....a squeamish representation of dosing Billy Eckstine with punch on the way down to Vanguard Studios. My guest today is an authentic musician who is comfortable enough to be himself. This carries through the music, which because of the acoustic setup allows my guest's voice to become an instrument....there is no amplification! The output is done by the people themselves - whatever they had to give in front of five people in a barn with a combined total of 3 teeth or in a coffee house in Cambridge, MA which is across the Charles River from Boston University where myself and my guest both went. My guest is unconventional, a jug band junkie when crossed with legal LSD made for a real groovy time. Fellow comrades Geoff Muldaur, who smoked his first joint at Sabino Canyon, Fritz Richmond, Bill Keith, Maria Muldaur and Blind Lemon Jefferson all providing peer and mentor support in an experiential way.....they weren't getting an education in the classroom. This resurgence of regional American roots music was spurred on by independant record labels who saw transracial music as a good thing. This adherence to the acoustic itty by certain labels allowed this music to be heard by DJs who would mix in some Berry Gordy MoTown, Ray Charles from La La land and Tito Puente from the palladium. Their education was faith based with a common understanding that helping others was good, communicating non-verbally is all encompassing and mind expansion is necessary for new art to come into existence. But make no mistake, it has to be authentic, the artist must have creative control and if those back in the game saw any fleeting hash tag of commerciality they ran from it like a wild horse with a relaxed mind. Just back from NYC fresh off some gigs, Jim Kweskin welcome to the JFS. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Did you ever feel lonesome? That high lonesome feeling of Appalachia. Where lush green hills and streams created the perfect environment for Bluegrass Music. How then do you account for musicians who didn't grow up in this region but were still able to be authentic and true to American roots music. Obviously it starts in the home. And my guests home was full of instruments and musicians. He understood the Alamo and how too beg steal or borrow two nickels or a dime to croon, yodel and sing be it Tex Mex, Bay State Boogie or the train of the sea. Truly though my guest was always a performer. However he was one of these 2nd generation players who had the opportunity to learn @ the foot of the master Bill Monroe. And what did he instill in my guest? How about the idea of cultivating your his own sound? "What do you have to say for yourself cause you sure sound a lot like me and that ain't good." Be yourself and burn. Don't matter if its in front of 5 people with a total of 3 teeth in a barn in Eastern Kentucky. Don't worry about perfection. You need mathematics but you also need love, spirituality and urgency when you play this music. Otherwise it is sterile and nothing like the Blue Ridge Mountains. My guest today is one of the most accomplished American musicians in his generation. Quality and sophistication, adaptability and appreciation of cultures. Inherently a kid from Boston who was as authentic in his delivery as Tex Logan or Red Allen, Winnie Winston and Ralph Rinsler. He has collaborated for the better part of 4 decades with his peers David Dawg Grisman, Bill Keith, Jerry Garcia, John Kahn, Richard Greene, Warren Smith, Ozzie Ahlers, brothers Chris and Lorin. John Nagy, Billy Mundi, Herb Buschler and Bill Stevenson. He shows no signs of slowing down even if he occasionally feels sorrow for the deeds he has done. There was a time in this country when a younger generation chose to buck the realities of linear life and carve their own paths. Legacy paths if you will. This generation had been inundated with Frank Sinatra and Doris Day, and were bored to death. What was resonating inside them was the sounds they were hearing and emulating from the smokey blues players who sung about real life and played acoustic instruments. Everything was in mono. It's not easy for white folks to comp Blind Lemon Jefferson, Reverend Gary Davis and Shakey Jake. For it to be an authentic emulation this generation had to understand the stories and the regional sophistication of these masters. They had to be eclectic and musicologists in their own way scouring for those obscure LPs at Village Music run by John Goddard My guest today was part of this generation who set out to learn from these masters and add their own accent. The messages and stories came through in their own cadence with washtub basses, mandolin's, dobro's and pottery pie. Old folkies like Eric Von Schmidt, Dave Van Ronk and my guest were the precursors to psychedelic electric music. These jug bands were looking to turn back the hands of time. Singing about being sleepy or having been all around this world, performing @ folk city and coffee houses with the likes of Bill Monroe, Tex Logan and other forefathers of traditional American Music. My guest today is a prolific singer, song writer and multiple instrumentalist. He plays the guitar, organ and saxophone, started his making albums on Prestige Folklore and Reprise and playing with all the heavies. Butterfield, Bobby Charles, Gene Dinwiddie,  Maria D'amato the aforementioned  mentioned Van Ronk, David Grisman and John Kahn Fritz Richmond and Bill Keith. Peter talks about the early Massachusetts bluegrass scene and explains how he would end up being hired to play some some New England dates with the iconic father of bluegrass music. Monroe quickly becomes a central part of this interview, and we learn not only about how Monroe had helped a young Ray Charles but also about when Peter witnessed their reunion. Peter gives a first-hand account of Bill as a band leader, songwriting partner and friend. The brand is now carried at thousands of retail chains across the country and is the leader of the blooming set. We caught up with Leigh and Bill at NOSH Live Summer 2018 and discussed the company’s journey to become, in their words, a 13-year overnight success, and how intense sampling efforts and grassroots metrics were critical to the brand’s development. These days, Gómez is considered the “Spanish King of the Five-String Banjo.” He's a prolific performer, educator and music promoter, bringing a distinctly American music to new audiences in Europe. The mission of the Hoosier United Methodist Podcast is strengthening the connection in the United Methodist Church in the state of Indiana for the purpose of making disciples of Jesus Christ the transformation of the world. In Episode 20 of the Hoosier United Methodist podcast Dr. Brad Miller speaks with Rev. David V. W. Owen chairperson of the Africa University campaign. David had the difficult task of taking on the chairperson ship of the African University campaign upon the untimely death of his good friend Rev. Bill Keith, the previous chair of the campaign. In this conversation David tells Brad about the purpose of Africa University and the impact of Africa University upon the entire continent of Africa which ranges far beyond religious training and agricultural teaching to make a perpetual impact on the political and economic fortunes of the entire continent of Africa and beyond.   The monetary goal of the Africa University campaign is $1.6 million by the end of 2016 and David shares how the great participation of many, many churches Indiana has brought the campaign to the point of meeting and perhaps exceeding the goal.  The specific purpose of the campaign is to endow an agricultural natural services faculty chair at Africa University. The broader purpose has been to deepen the missional impact of every local church to be a part of something greater than themselves which is transformational. David believes that a common factor of dynamic, impactful local churches is an emphasis on reaching out beyond themselves in missions. David considers this reconnecting with the real mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ through outreach a real sign of hope in Indiana United Methodist Churches.  You will want to listen in on this conversation Brad and Dave about Africa University and the perpetual impact a heart for mission can have on transforming individuals and congregations.    Episode 20 of the Hoosier United Methodist podcast is sponsored by the book “Meet the Good People: Wesley Seven Ways of Sharing Faith" by Rev. Dr. Roger Ross and the Hoosier United Methodist Podcast is supportive of Mission Guatemala under the direction of Rev. Tom Heaton.  The Mission of the Hoosier United Methodist podcast is strengthening the connection in the United Methodist Church in Indiana for the purpose of making disciples of Jesus Christ the transformation of the world.
